1Jerubbaal, qui est Gédéon, et tout le peuple qui était avec lui, se levèrent de bon matin, et campèrent près de la source de Harod. Le camp de Madian était au nord de Gédéon, vers la colline de Moré, dans la vallée. 2L’Éternel dit à Gédéon : Le peuple que tu as avec toi est trop nombreux pour que je livre Madian entre ses mains ; il pourrait en tirer gloire contre moi, et dire : C’est ma main qui m’a délivré. 3Publie donc ceci aux oreilles du peuple : Que celui qui est craintif et qui a peur s’en retourne et s’éloigne de la montagne de Galaad. Vingt-deux mille hommes parmi le peuple s’en retournèrent, et il en resta dix mille. 4L’Éternel dit à Gédéon : Le peuple est encore trop nombreux. Fais-les descendre vers l’eau, et là je t’en ferai le triage ; celui dont je te dirai : Que celui-ci aille avec toi, ira avec toi ; et celui dont je te dirai : Que celui-ci n’aille pas avec toi, n’ira pas avec toi. 5Gédéon fit descendre le peuple vers l’eau, et l’Éternel dit à Gédéon : Tous ceux qui laperont l’eau avec la langue comme lape le chien, tu les sépareras de tous ceux qui se mettront à genoux pour boire. 6Ceux qui lapèrent l’eau en la portant à la bouche avec leur main furent au nombre de trois cents hommes, et tout le reste du peuple se mit à genoux pour boire. 7Et l’Éternel dit à Gédéon : C’est par les trois cents hommes qui ont lapé, que je vous sauverai et que je livrerai Madian entre tes mains. Que tout le reste du peuple s’en aille chacun chez soi. 8On prit les vivres du peuple et ses trompettes. Puis Gédéon renvoya tous les hommes d’Israël chacun dans sa tente, et il retint les trois cents hommes. Le camp de Madian était au-dessous de lui dans la vallée. 9L’Éternel dit à Gédéon pendant la nuit : Lève-toi, descends au camp, car je l’ai livré entre tes mains. 10Si tu crains de descendre, descends-y avec Pura, ton serviteur. 11Tu écouteras ce qu’ils diront, et après cela tes mains seront fortifiées : descends donc au camp. Il descendit avec Pura, son serviteur, jusqu’aux avant-postes du camp. 12Madian, Amalek, et tous les fils de l’Orient, étaient répandus dans la vallée comme une multitude de sauterelles, et leurs chameaux étaient innombrables comme le sable qui est sur le bord de la mer. 13Gédéon arriva ; et voici, un homme racontait à son camarade un songe. Il disait : J’ai eu un songe ; et voici, un gâteau de pain d’orge roulait dans le camp de Madian ; il est venu heurter jusqu’à la tente, et elle est tombée ; il l’a retournée sens dessus dessous, et elle a été renversée. 14Son camarade répondit, et dit : Ce n’est pas autre chose que l’épée de Gédéon, fils de Joas, homme d’Israël ; Dieu a livré entre ses mains Madian et tout le camp. 15Lorsque Gédéon eut entendu le récit du songe et son explication, il se prosterna, revint au camp d’Israël, et dit : Levez-vous, car l’Éternel a livré entre vos mains le camp de Madian. 16Il divisa en trois corps les trois cents hommes, et il leur remit à tous des trompettes et des cruches vides, avec des flambeaux dans les cruches. 17Il leur dit : Vous me regarderez et vous ferez comme moi. Dès que j’aborderai le camp, vous ferez ce que je ferai ; 18et quand je sonnerai de la trompette, moi et tous ceux qui seront avec moi, vous sonnerez aussi de la trompette tout autour du camp, et vous direz : Pour l’Éternel et pour Gédéon ! 19Gédéon et les cent hommes qui étaient avec lui arrivèrent aux abords du camp au commencement de la veille du milieu, comme on venait de placer les gardes. Ils sonnèrent de la trompette, et brisèrent les cruches qu’ils avaient à la main. 20Les trois corps sonnèrent de la trompette, et brisèrent les cruches ; ils saisirent de la main gauche les flambeaux et de la main droite les trompettes pour sonner, et ils s’écrièrent : Épée pour l’Éternel et pour Gédéon ! 21Ils restèrent chacun à sa place autour du camp, et tout le camp se mit à courir, à pousser des cris, et à prendre la fuite. 22Les trois cents hommes sonnèrent encore de la trompette ; et, dans tout le camp, l’Éternel leur fit tourner l’épée les uns contre les autres. Le camp s’enfuit jusqu’à Beth-Schitta vers Tseréra, jusqu’au bord d’Abel-Mehola près de Tabbath. 23Les hommes d’Israël se rassemblèrent, ceux de Nephthali, d’Aser et de tout Manassé, et ils poursuivirent Madian. 24Gédéon envoya des messagers dans toute la montagne d’Éphraïm, pour dire : Descendez à la rencontre de Madian, et coupez-leur le passage des eaux jusqu’à Beth-Bara et celui du Jourdain. Tous les hommes d’Éphraïm se rassemblèrent et ils s’emparèrent du passage des eaux jusqu’à Beth-Bara et de celui du Jourdain. 25Ils saisirent deux chefs de Madian, Oreb et Zeeb ; ils tuèrent Oreb au rocher d’Oreb, et ils tuèrent Zeeb au pressoir de Zeeb. Ils poursuivirent Madian, et ils apportèrent les têtes d’Oreb et de Zeeb à Gédéon de l’autre côté du Jourdain.
1Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people who were with him, rose up early, and encamped beside the spring of Harod: and the camp of Midian was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley. 2Yahweh said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ 3Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart from Mount Gilead.’” Twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained. 4Yahweh said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. It shall be, that of whom I tell you, ‘This shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you; and of whoever I tell you, ‘This shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.” 5So he brought down the people to the water; and Yahweh said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps of the water with his tongue, like a dog laps, you shall set him by himself; likewise everyone who bows down on his knees to drink.” 6The number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people bowed down on their knees to drink water. 7Yahweh said to Gideon, “By the three hundred men who lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, each to his own place.” 8So the people took food in their hand, and their trumpets; and he sent all the men of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the three hundred men: and the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley. 9That same night, Yahweh said to him, “Arise, go down into the camp; for I have delivered it into your hand. 10But if you are afraid to go down, go with Purah your servant down to the camp: 11and you shall hear what they say; and afterward your hands will be strengthened to go down into the camp.” Then went he down with Purah his servant to the outermost part of the armed men who were in the camp. 12The Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like locusts for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand which is on the seashore for multitude. 13When Gideon had come, behold, there was a man telling a dream to his fellow; and he said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream; and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, and came to the tent, and struck it so that it fell, and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.” 14His fellow answered, “This is nothing other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel. God has delivered Midian into his hand, with all the army.” 15It was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and its interpretation, that he worshiped; and he returned into the camp of Israel, and said, “Arise; for Yahweh has delivered the army of Midian into your hand!” 16He divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put into the hands of all of them trumpets, and empty pitchers, with torches within the pitchers. 17He said to them, “Watch me, and do likewise. Behold, when I come to the outermost part of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so you shall do. 18When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and shout, ‘For Yahweh and for Gideon!’” 19So Gideon, and the hundred men who were with him, came to the outermost part of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch, when they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and broke in pieces the pitchers that were in their hands. 20The three companies blew the trumpets, and broke the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands with which to blow; and they shouted, “The sword of Yahweh and of Gideon!” 21They each stood in his place around the camp; and all the army ran; and they shouted, and put them to flight. 22They blew the three hundred trumpets, and Yahweh set every man’s sword against his fellow, and against all the army; and the army fled as far as Beth Shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath. 23The men of Israel were gathered together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after Midian. 24Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against Midian, and take before them the waters, as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan!” So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and took the waters as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan. 25They took the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the wine press of Zeeb, and pursued Midian: and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.

Toen keerden uit het volk weder twee en twintig duizend, dat er tienduizend overbleven. 4En de HEERE zeide tot Gideon: Nog is des volks te veel; doe hen afgaan naar het water, en Ik zal ze u aldaar beproeven; en het zal geschieden, van welken Ik tot u zeggen zal: Deze zal met u trekken, die zal met u trekken; maar al degene, van welken Ik zeggen zal: Deze zal niet met u trekken, die zal niet trekken. 5En hij deed het volk afgaan naar het water. Toen zeide de HEERE tot Gideon: Al wie met zijn tong uit het water zal lekken, gelijk als een hond zou lekken, dien zult gij alleen stellen; desgelijks al wie op zijn knieen zal bukken om te drinken. 6Toen was het getal dergenen, die met hun hand tot hun mond gelekt hadden, driehonderd man; maar alle overigen des volks hadden op hun knieen gebukt, om water te drinken. 7En de HEERE zeide tot Gideon: Door deze driehonderd mannen, die gelekt hebben, zal Ik ulieden verlossen, en de Midianieten in uw hand geven; daarom laat al dat volk weggaan, een ieder naar zijn plaats. 8En het volk nam den teerkost in hun hand, en hun bazuinen; en hij liet al die mannen van Israel gaan, een iegelijk naar zijn tent; maar die driehonderd man behield hij. En hij had het heirleger der Midianieten beneden in het dal. 9En het geschiedde in denzelven nacht, dat de HEERE tot hem zeide: Sta op, ga henen af in het leger, want Ik heb het in uw hand gegeven. 10Vreest gij dan nog af te gaan, zo ga af, gij, en Pura, uw jongen, naar het leger. 11En gij zult horen, wat zij zullen spreken, en daarna zullen uw handen gesterkt worden, dat gij aftrekken zult in het leger. Toen ging hij af, met Pura, zijn jongen, tot het uiterste der schildwachten, die in het leger waren. 12En de Midianieten, en Amalekieten, en al de kinderen van het oosten, lagen in het dal, gelijk sprinkhanen in menigte, en hun kemelen waren ontelbaar, gelijk het zand, dat aan den oever der zee is, in menigte. 13Toen nu Gideon aankwam, ziet, zo was er een man, die zijn metgezel een droom vertelde, en zeide: Zie, ik heb een droom gedroomd, en zie, een geroost gerstebrood wentelde zich in het leger der Midianieten, en het kwam tot aan de tent, en sloeg haar, dat zij viel, en keerde haar om, het onderste boven, dat de tent er lag. 14En zijn metgezel antwoordde, en zeide: Dit is niet anders, dan het zwaard van Gideon, de zoon van Joas, de Israelietischen man; God heeft de Midianieten en dit ganse leger in zijn hand gegeven. 15En het geschiedde, als Gideon de vertelling dezes drooms, en zijn uitlegging hoorde, zo aanbad hij; en hij keerde weder tot het leger van Israel, en zeide: Maakt u op, want de HEERE heeft het leger der Midianieten in ulieder hand gegeven. 16En hij deelde de driehonderd man in drie hopen; en hij gaf een iegelijk een bazuin in zijn hand, en ledige kruiken, en fakkelen in het midden der kruiken. 17En hij zeide tot hen: Ziet naar mij en doet alzo; en ziet, als ik zal komen aan het uiterste des legers, zo zal het geschieden, gelijk als ik zal doen, alzo zult gij doen. 18Als ik met de bazuin zal blazen, ik en allen, die met mij zijn, dan zult gijlieden ook met de bazuin blazen, rondom het ganse leger, en gij zult zeggen: Voor den HEERE en voor Gideon! 19Alzo kwam Gideon, en honderd mannen, die met hem waren, in het uiterste des legers, in het begin van de middelste nachtwaak, als zij maar even de wachters gesteld hadden; en zij bliezen met de bazuinen, ook sloegen zij de kruiken, die in hun hand waren, in stukken. 20Alzo bliezen de drie hopen met de bazuinen, en braken de kruiken; en zij hielden met de linkerhand de fakkelen, en met hun rechterhand de bazuinen om te blazen; en zij riepen: Het zwaard van den HEERE, en van Gideon! 21En zij stonden, een iegelijk in zijn plaats, rondom het leger. Toen verliep het ganse leger, en zij schreeuwden en vloden. 22Als de driehonderd met de bazuinen bliezen, zo zette de HEERE het zwaard des een tegen den anderen, en dat in het ganse leger; en het leger vluchtte tot Beth-Sitta toe naar Tseredath, tot aan de grens van Abel-Mehola, boven Tabbath. 23Toen werden de mannen van Israel bijeengeroepen, uit Nafthali, en uit Aser, en uit gans Manasse; en zij jaagden de Midianieten achterna. 24Ook zond Gideon boden in het ganse gebergte van Efraim, zeggende: Komt af de Midianieten tegemoet, en beneemt hunlieden de wateren, tot aan Beth-bara, te weten de Jordaan; alzo werd alle man van Efraim bijeengeroepen, en zij benamen hun de wateren tot aan Beth-bara, en de Jordaan. 25En zij vingen twee vorsten der Midianieten, Oreb en Zeeb, en doodden Oreb op den rotssteen Oreb, en Zeeb doodden zij in de perskuip van Zeeb, en vervolgden de Midianieten; en zij brachten de hoofden van Oreb en Zeeb tot Gideon, over de Jordaan.
