1Voici les nations que l’Éternel laissa pour éprouver par elles Israël, tous ceux qui n’avaient pas connu toutes les guerres de Canaan. 2Il voulait seulement que les générations des enfants d’Israël connussent et apprissent la guerre, ceux qui ne l’avaient pas connue auparavant. 3Ces nations étaient : les cinq princes des Philistins, tous les Cananéens, les Sidoniens, et les Héviens qui habitaient la montagne du Liban, depuis la montagne de Baal-Hermon jusqu’à l’entrée de Hamath. 4Ces nations servirent à mettre Israël à l’épreuve, afin que l’Éternel sût s’ils obéiraient aux commandements qu’il avait prescrits à leurs pères par Moïse. 5Et les enfants d’Israël habitèrent au milieu des Cananéens, des Héthiens, des Amoréens, des Phéréziens, des Héviens et des Jébusiens ; 6ils prirent leurs filles pour femmes, ils donnèrent à leurs fils leurs propres filles, et ils servirent leurs dieux. 7Les enfants d’Israël firent ce qui déplaît à l’Éternel, ils oublièrent l’Éternel , et ils servirent les Baals et les idoles. 8La colère de l’Éternel s’enflamma contre Israël, et il les vendit entre les mains de Cuschan-Rischeathaïm, roi de Mésopotamie. Et les enfants d’Israël furent asservis huit ans à Cuschan-Rischeathaïm. 9Les enfants d’Israël crièrent à l’Éternel, et l’Éternel leur suscita un libérateur qui les délivra, Othniel, fils de Kenaz, frère cadet de Caleb. 10L’esprit de l’Éternel fut sur lui. Il devint juge en Israël, et il partit pour la guerre. L’Éternel livra entre ses mains Cuschan-Rischeathaïm, roi de Mésopotamie, et sa main fut puissante contre Cuschan-Rischeathaïm. 11Le pays fut en repos pendant quarante ans. Et Othniel, fils de Kenaz, mourut. 12Les enfants d’Israël firent encore ce qui déplaît à l’Éternel ; et l’Éternel fortifia Églon, roi de Moab, contre Israël, parce qu’ils avaient fait ce qui déplaît à l’Éternel. 13Églon réunit à lui les fils d’Ammon et les Amalécites, et il se mit en marche. Il battit Israël, et ils s’emparèrent de la ville des palmiers. 14Et les enfants d’Israël furent asservis dix-huit ans à Églon, roi de Moab. 15Les enfants d’Israël crièrent à l’Éternel, et l’Éternel leur suscita un libérateur, Éhud, fils de Guéra, Benjamite, qui ne se servait pas de la main droite. Les enfants d’Israël envoyèrent par lui un présent à Églon, roi de Moab. 16Éhud se fit une épée à deux tranchants, longue d’une coudée, et il la ceignit sous ses vêtements, au côté droit. 17Il offrit le présent à Églon, roi de Moab : or Églon était un homme très gras. 18Lorsqu’il eut achevé d’offrir le présent, il renvoya les gens qui l’avaient apporté. 19Il revint lui-même depuis les carrières près de Guilgal, et il dit : Ô roi ! j’ai quelque chose de secret à te dire. Le roi dit : Silence ! Et tous ceux qui étaient auprès de lui sortirent. 20Éhud l’aborda comme il était assis seul dans sa chambre d’été, et il dit : J’ai une parole de Dieu pour toi. Églon se leva de son siège. 21Alors Éhud avança la main gauche, tira l’épée de son côté droit, et la lui enfonça dans le ventre. 22La poignée même entra après la lame, et la graisse se referma autour de la lame ; car il ne retira pas du ventre l’épée, qui sortit par derrière. 23Éhud sortit par le portique, ferma sur lui les portes de la chambre haute, et tira le verrou. 24Quand il fut sorti, les serviteurs du roi vinrent et regardèrent ; et voici, les portes de la chambre haute étaient fermées au verrou. Ils dirent : Sans doute il se couvre les pieds dans la chambre d’été. 25Ils attendirent longtemps ; et comme il n’ouvrait pas les portes de la chambre haute, ils prirent la clé et ouvrirent, et voici, leur maître était mort, étendu par terre. 26Pendant leurs délais, Éhud prit la fuite, dépassa les carrières, et se sauva à Seïra. 27Dès qu’il fut arrivé, il sonna de la trompette dans la montagne d’Éphraïm. Les enfants d’Israël descendirent avec lui de la montagne, et il se mit à leur tête. 28Il leur dit : Suivez-moi, car l’Éternel a livré entre vos mains les Moabites, vos ennemis. Ils descendirent après lui, s’emparèrent des gués du Jourdain vis-à-vis de Moab, et ne laissèrent passer personne. 29Ils battirent dans ce temps-là environ dix mille hommes de Moab, tous robustes, tous vaillants, et pas un n’échappa. 30En ce jour, Moab fut humilié sous la main d’Israël. Et le pays fut en repos pendant quatre-vingts ans. 31Après lui, il y eut Schamgar, fils d’Anath. Il battit six cents hommes des Philistins avec un aiguillon à bœufs. Et lui aussi fut un libérateur d’Israël.
1Now these are the nations which Yahweh left, to prove Israel by them, even as many as had not known all the wars of Canaan; 2only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing of it: 3the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath. 4They were left to test Israel by them, to know whether they would listen to the commandments of Yahweh, which he commanded their fathers by Moses. 5The children of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites: 6and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods. 7The children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and forgot Yahweh their God, and served the Baals and the Asheroth. 8Therefore Yahweh’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Cushan Rishathaim eight years. 9When the children of Israel cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised up a savior to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. 10The Spirit of Yahweh came on him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and Yahweh delivered Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand: and his hand prevailed against Cushan Rishathaim. 11The land had rest forty years. Othniel the son of Kenaz died. 12The children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh: and Yahweh strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh. 13He gathered to him the children of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and struck Israel, and they possessed the city of palm trees. 14The children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years. 15But when the children of Israel cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised them up a savior, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man left-handed. The children of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab. 16Ehud made him a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he wore it under his clothing on his right thigh. 17He offered the tribute to Eglon king of Moab: now Eglon was a very fat man. 18When he had made an end of offering the tribute, he sent away the people who bore the tribute. 19But he himself turned back from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret errand to you, king.” The king said, “Keep silence!” All who stood by him went out from him. 20Ehud came to him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. Ehud said, “I have a message from God to you.” He arose out of his seat. 21Ehud put out his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body: 22and the handle also went in after the blade; and the fat closed on the blade, for he didn’t draw the sword out of his body; and it came out behind. 23Then Ehud went out onto the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room on him, and locked them. 24Now when he was gone out, his servants came; and they saw, and behold, the doors of the upper room were locked; and they said, “Surely he is covering his feet in the upper room.” 25They waited until they were ashamed; and behold, he didn’t open the doors of the upper room: therefore they took the key, and opened them, and behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth. 26Ehud escaped while they waited, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped to Seirah. 27When he had come, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he before them. 28He said to them, “Follow me; for Yahweh has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” They followed him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and didn’t allow any man to pass over. 29They struck of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, every lusty man, and every man of valor; and there escaped not a man. 30So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. The land had rest eighty years. 31After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also saved Israel.
1Dit nu zijn de heidenen, die de HEERE liet blijven, om door hen Israel te verzoeken, allen, die niet wisten van al de krijgen van Kanaan; 2Alleenlijk, opdat de geslachten der kinderen Israels die wisten, opdat Hij hun den krijg leerde, tenminste dengenen, die daar te voren niet van wisten. 3Vijf vorsten der Filistijnen, en al de Kanaanieten, en de Sidoniers, en de Hevieten, wonende in het gebergte van den Libanon, van den berg Baal-Hermon, tot daar men komt te Hamath. 4Dezen dan waren, om Israel door hen te verzoeken, opdat men wiste, of zij de geboden des HEEREN zouden horen, die Hij hun vaderen door de hand van Mozes geboden had. 5Als nu de kinderen Israels woonden in het midden der Kanaanieten, der Hethieten, en der Amorieten, en der Ferezieten, en der Hevieten, en der Jebusieten; 6Zo namen zij zich derzelver dochters tot vrouwen, en gaven hun dochters aan derzelver zonen; en zij dienden derzelver goden. 7En de kinderen Israels deden, dat kwaad was in de ogen des HEEREN, en vergaten den HEERE, hun God, en zij dienden de Baals en de bossen. 8Toen ontstak de toorn des HEEREN tegen Israel; en Hij verkocht hen in de hand van Cuschan Rischataim, koning van Mesopotamie; en de kinderen Israels dienden Cuschan Rischataim acht jaren. 9Zo riepen de kinderen Israels tot den HEERE; en de HEERE verwekte de kinderen Israels een verlosser, die hen verloste, Othniel, zoon van Kenaz, broeder van Kaleb, die jonger was dan hij. 10En de Geest des HEEREN was over hem, en hij richtte Israel, en toog uit ten strijde; en de HEERE gaf Cuschan Rischataim, den koning van Syrie, in zijn hand, dat zijn hand sterk werd over Cuschan Rischataim. 11Toen was het land veertig jaren stil, en Othniel, de zoon van Kenaz, stierf. 12Maar de kinderen Israels voeren voort te doen, dat kwaad was in de ogen des HEEREN; toen sterkte de HEERE Eglon, den koning der Moabieten, tegen Israel, omdat zij deden, wat kwaad was in de ogen des HEEREN. 13En hij vergaderde tot zich de kinderen Ammons en de Amalekieten en hij toog heen, en sloeg Israel, en zij namen de Palmstad in bezit. 14En de kinderen Israels dienden Eglon, koning der Moabieten, achttien jaren. 15Toen riepen de kinderen Israels tot den HEERE, en de HEERE verwekte hun een verlosser, Ehud, den zoon van Gera, een zoon van Jemini, een man, die links was. En de kinderen Israels zonden door zijn hand een geschenk aan Eglon, den koning der Moabieten. 16En Ehud maakte zich een zwaard, dat twee scherpten had, welks lengte een el was; en hij gordde dat onder zijn klederen, aan zijn rechterheup. 17En hij bracht aan Eglon, den koning der Moabieten, dat geschenk; Eglon nu was een zeer vet man. 18En het geschiedde, als hij geeindigd had het geschenk te leveren, zo geleidde hij het volk, die het geschenk gedragen hadden; 19Maar hijzelf keerde wederom van de gesneden beelden, die bij Gilgal waren, en zeide: Ik heb een heimelijke zaak aan u, o koning! dewelke zeide: Zwijg! En allen, die om hem stonden, gingen van hem uit. 20En Ehud kwam tot hem in, daar hij was zittende in een koele opperzaal, die hij voor zich alleen had; zo zeide Ehud: Ik heb een woord Gods aan u. Toen stond hij op van den stoel. 21Ehud dan reikte zijn linkerhand uit, en nam het zwaard van zijn rechterheup, en stak het in zijn buik; 22Dat ook het hecht achter het lemmer inging, en het vet om het lemmer toesloot (want hij trok het zwaard niet uit zijn buik), en de drek uitging. 23Toen ging Ehud uit van de voorzaal, en sloot de deuren der opperzaal voor zich toe, en deed ze in het slot. 24Als hij uitgegaan was, zo kwamen zijn knechten, en zagen toe, en ziet, de deuren der opperzaal waren in het slot gedaan; zo zeiden zij: Zeker, hij bedekt zijn voeten in de verkoelkamer. 25Als zij nu tot schamens toe gebeid hadden, ziet, zo opende hij de deuren der opperzaal niet. Toen namen zij den sleutel en deden open; en ziet, hunlieder heer lag ter aarde dood. 26En Ehud ontkwam, terwijl zij vertoefden; want hij ging voorbij de gesneden beelden, en ontkwam naar Sehirath. 27En het geschiedde, als hij aankwam, zo blies hij met de bazuin op het gebergte van Efraim; en de kinderen Israels togen met hem af van het gebergte, en hij zelf voor hun aangezicht heen. 28En hij zeide tot hen: Volgt mij na; want de HEERE heeft uw vijanden, de Moabieten, in ulieder hand gegeven. En zij togen af, hem na, en namen de veren van de Jordaan in naar Moab, en lieten niemand overgaan. 29En zij sloegen de Moabieten te dier tijd, omtrent tien duizend man, allen vette en allen strijdbare mannen, dat er niet een man ontkwam. 30Alzo werd Moab te dien dage onder Israels hand ten ondergebracht; en het land was stil tachtig jaren. 31Na hem nu was Samgar, een zoon van Anath, die sloeg de Filistijnen, zeshonderd man, met een ossenstok; alzo verloste hij ook Israel.
