1Jephthé, le Galaadite, était un vaillant héros. Il était fils d’une femme prostituée ; et c’est Galaad qui avait engendré Jephthé. 2La femme de Galaad lui enfanta des fils, qui , devenus grands, chassèrent Jephthé, et lui dirent : Tu n’hériteras pas dans la maison de notre père, car tu es fils d’une autre femme. 3Et Jephthé s’enfuit loin de ses frères, et il habita dans le pays de Tob. Des gens de rien se rassemblèrent auprès de Jephthé, et ils faisaient avec lui des excursions. 4Quelque temps après, les fils d’Ammon firent la guerre à Israël. 5Et comme les fils d’Ammon faisaient la guerre à Israël, les anciens de Galaad allèrent chercher Jephthé au pays de Tob. 6Ils dirent à Jephthé : Viens, tu seras notre chef, et nous combattrons les fils d’Ammon. 7Jephthé répondit aux anciens de Galaad : N’avez-vous pas eu de la haine pour moi, et ne m’avez-vous pas chassé de la maison de mon père ? Pourquoi venez-vous à moi maintenant que vous êtes dans la détresse ? 8Les anciens de Galaad dirent à Jephthé : Nous revenons à toi maintenant, afin que tu marches avec nous, que tu combattes les fils d’Ammon, et que tu sois notre chef, celui de tous les habitants de Galaad. 9Jephthé répondit aux anciens de Galaad : Si vous me ramenez pour combattre les fils d’Ammon, et que l’Éternel les livre devant moi, je serai votre chef. 10Les anciens de Galaad dirent à Jephthé : Que l’Éternel nous entende, et qu’il juge, si nous ne faisons pas ce que tu dis. 11Et Jephthé partit avec les anciens de Galaad. Le peuple le mit à sa tête et l’établit comme chef, et Jephthé répéta devant l’Éternel, à Mitspa, toutes les paroles qu’il avait prononcées. 12Jephthé envoya des messagers au roi des fils d’Ammon, pour lui dire : Qu’y a-t-il entre moi et toi, que tu viennes contre moi pour faire la guerre à mon pays ? 13Le roi des fils d’Ammon répondit aux messagers de Jephthé : C’est qu’Israël, quand il est monté d’Égypte, s’est emparé de mon pays, depuis l’Arnon jusqu’au Jabbok et au Jourdain. Rends-le maintenant de bon gré. 14Jephthé envoya de nouveau des messagers au roi des fils d’Ammon, 15pour lui dire : Ainsi parle Jephthé : Israël ne s’est point emparé du pays de Moab, ni du pays des fils d’Ammon. 16Car lorsque Israël est monté d’Égypte, il a marché dans le désert jusqu’à la mer Rouge, et il est arrivé à Kadès. 17Alors Israël envoya des messagers au roi d’Édom, pour lui dire : Laisse-moi passer par ton pays. Mais le roi d’Édom n’y consentit pas. Il en envoya aussi au roi de Moab, qui refusa. Et Israël resta à Kadès. 18Puis il marcha par le désert, tourna le pays d’Édom et le pays de Moab, et vint à l’orient du pays de Moab ; ils campèrent au delà de l’Arnon, sans entrer sur le territoire de Moab, car l’Arnon est la frontière de Moab. 19Israël envoya des messagers à Sihon, roi des Amoréens, roi de Hesbon, et Israël lui dit : Laisse-nous passer par ton pays jusqu’au lieu où nous allons. 20Mais Sihon n’eut pas assez confiance en Israël pour le laisser passer sur son territoire ; il rassembla tout son peuple, campa à Jahats, et combattit Israël. 21L’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël, livra Sihon et tout son peuple entre les mains d’Israël, qui les battit. Israël s’empara de tout le pays des Amoréens établis dans cette contrée. 22Ils s’emparèrent de tout le territoire des Amoréens, depuis l’Arnon jusqu’au Jabbok, et depuis le désert jusqu’au Jourdain. 23Et maintenant que l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël, a chassé les Amoréens devant son peuple d’Israël, est-ce toi qui aurais la possession de leur pays ? 24Ce que ton dieu Kemosch te donne à posséder, ne le posséderais-tu pas ? Et tout ce que l’Éternel, notre Dieu, a mis en notre possession devant nous, nous ne le posséderions pas ! 25Vaux-tu donc mieux que Balak, fils de Tsippor, roi de Moab ? A-t-il contesté avec Israël, ou lui a-t-il fait la guerre ? 26Voilà trois cents ans qu’Israël habite à Hesbon et dans les villes de son ressort, à Aroër et dans les villes de son ressort, et dans toutes les villes qui sont sur les bords de l’Arnon : pourquoi ne les lui avez-vous pas enlevées pendant ce temps-là ? 27Je ne t’ai point offensé, et tu agis mal avec moi en me faisant la guerre. Que l’Éternel, le juge, soit aujourd’hui juge entre les enfants d’Israël et les fils d’Ammon ! 28Le roi des fils d’Ammon n’écouta point les paroles que Jephthé lui fit dire. 29L’esprit de l’Éternel fut sur Jephthé. Il traversa Galaad et Manassé ; il passa à Mitspé de Galaad ; et de Mitspé de Galaad, il marcha contre les fils d’Ammon. 30Jephthé fit un vœu à l’Éternel, et dit : Si tu livres entre mes mains les fils d’Ammon, 31quiconque sortira des portes de ma maison au-devant de moi, à mon heureux retour de chez les fils d’Ammon, sera consacré à l’Éternel, et je l’offrirai en holocauste. 32Jephthé marcha contre les fils d’Ammon , et l’Éternel les livra entre ses mains. 33Il leur fit éprouver une très grande défaite, depuis Aroër jusque vers Minnith, espace qui renfermait vingt villes, et jusqu’à Abel-Keramim. Et les fils d’Ammon furent humiliés devant les enfants d’Israël. 34Jephthé retourna dans sa maison à Mitspa. Et voici, sa fille sortit au-devant de lui avec des tambourins et des danses. C’était son unique enfant ; il n’avait point de fils et point d’autre fille. 35Dès qu’il la vit, il déchira ses vêtements, et dit : Ah ! ma fille ! tu me jettes dans l’abattement, tu es au nombre de ceux qui me troublent ! J’ai fait un vœu à l’Éternel, et je ne puis le révoquer. 36Elle lui dit : Mon père, si tu as fait un vœu à l’Éternel, traite-moi selon ce qui est sorti de ta bouche, maintenant que l’Éternel t’a vengé de tes ennemis, des fils d’Ammon. 37Et elle dit à son père : Que ceci me soit accordé : laisse-moi libre pendant deux mois ! Je m’en irai, je descendrai dans les montagnes, et je pleurerai ma virginité avec mes compagnes. 38Il répondit : Va ! Et il la laissa libre pour deux mois. Elle s’en alla avec ses compagnes, et elle pleura sa virginité sur les montagnes. 39Au bout des deux mois, elle revint vers son père, et il accomplit sur elle le vœu qu’il avait fait. Elle n’avait point connu d’homme. Dès lors s’établit en Israël la coutume 40que tous les ans les filles d’Israël s’en vont célébrer la fille de Jephthé, le Galaadite, quatre jours par année.
1Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a prostitute: and Gilead became the father of Jephthah. 2Gilead’s wife bore him sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said to him, “You shall not inherit in our father’s house; for you are the son of another woman.” 3Then Jephthah fled from his brothers, and lived in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him. 4After a while, the children of Ammon made war against Israel. 5It was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah out of the land of Tob; 6and they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.” 7Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Didn’t you hate me, and drive me out of my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?” 8The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Therefore we have turned again to you now, that you may go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon; and you shall be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.” 9Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Yahweh deliver them before me, shall I be your head?” 10The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Yahweh shall be witness between us; surely according to your word so will we do.” 11Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spoke all his words before Yahweh in Mizpah. 12Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, “What have you to do with me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?” 13The king of the children of Ammon answered to the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and to the Jordan: now therefore restore that territory again peaceably.” 14Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the children of Ammon; 15and he said to him, “Thus says Jephthah: Israel didn’t take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon, 16but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh; 17then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let me pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom didn’t listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel stayed in Kadesh. 18Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they didn’t come within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab. 19Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land to my place.’ 20But Sihon didn’t trust Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel. 21Yahweh, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country. 22They possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to the Jordan. 23So now Yahweh, the God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and should you possess them? 24Won’t you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever Yahweh our God has dispossessed from before us, them will we possess. 25Now are you anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them? 26While Israel lived in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; why didn’t you recover them within that time? 27I therefore have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong to war against me. Yahweh, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.” 28However the king of the children of Ammon didn’t listen to the words of Jephthah which he sent him. 29Then the Spirit of Yahweh came on Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed over to the children of Ammon. 30Jephthah vowed a vow to Yahweh, and said, “If you will indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand, 31then it shall be, that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Yahweh’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.” 32So Jephthah passed over to the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Yahweh delivered them into his hand. 33He struck them from Aroer until you come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and to Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel. 34Jephthah came to Mizpah to his house; and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter. 35When he saw her, he tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you are one of those who trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to Yahweh, and I can’t go back.” 36She said to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to Yahweh; do to me according to that which has proceeded out of your mouth, because Yahweh has taken vengeance for you on your enemies, even on the children of Ammon.” 37She said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down on the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.” 38He said, “Go.” He sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and mourned her virginity on the mountains. 39At the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed. She was a virgin. It was a custom in Israel, 40that the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
1Jeftha nu, de Gileadiet, was een strijdbaar held, maar hij was een hoerekind; doch Gilead had Jeftha gegenereerd. 2Gileads huisvrouw baarde hem ook zonen; en de zonen dezer vrouw, groot geworden zijnde, stieten Jeftha uit, en zeiden tot hem: Gij zult in het huis onzes vaders niet erven, want gij zijt een zoon van een andere vrouw. 3Toen vlood Jeftha voor het aangezicht zijner broederen, en woonde in het land Tob; en ijdele mannen vergaderden zich tot Jeftha, en togen met hem uit. 4En het geschiedde, na enige dagen, dat de kinderen Ammons tegen Israel krijgden. 5Zo geschiedde het, als de kinderen Ammons tegen Israel krijgden, dat de oudsten van Gilead heengingen, om Jeftha te halen uit het land van Tob. 6En zij zeiden tot Jeftha: Kom, en wees ons tot een overste, opdat wij strijden tegen de kinderen Ammons. 7Maar Jeftha zeide tot de oudsten van Gilead: Hebt gijlieden mij niet gehaat, en mij uit mijn vaders huis verstoten? waarom zijt gij dan nu tot mij gekomen, terwijl gij in benauwdheid zijt? 8En de oudsten van Gilead zeiden tot Jeftha: Daarom zijn wij nu tot u wedergekomen, dat gij met ons trekt, en tegen de kinderen Ammons strijdt; en gij zult ons tot een hoofd zijn, over alle inwoners van Gilead. 9Toen zeide Jeftha tot de oudsten van Gilead: Zo gijlieden mij wederhaalt, om te strijden tegen de kinderen Ammons, en de HEERE hen voor mijn aangezicht geven zal, zal ik u dan tot een hoofd zijn? 10En de oudsten van Gilead zeiden tot Jeftha: De HEERE zij toehoorder tussen ons, indien wij niet alzo naar uw woord doen. 11Alzo ging Jeftha met de oudsten van Gilead, en het volk stelde hem tot een hoofd en overste over zich. En Jeftha sprak al zijn woorden voor het aangezicht des HEEREN te Mizpa. 12Voorts zond Jeftha boden tot den koning der kinderen Ammons, zeggende: Wat hebben ik en gij met elkander te doen, dat gij tot mij gekomen zijt, om tegen mijn land te krijgen? 13En de koning der kinderen Ammons zeide tot de boden van Jeftha: Omdat Israel, als hij uit Egypte optoog, mijn land genomen heeft, van de Arnon af tot aan de Jabbok, en tot aan de Jordaan; zo geef mij dat nu weder met vrede. 14Maar Jeftha voer wijders voort, en zond boden tot den koning der kinderen Ammons. 15En hij zeide tot hem: Zo zegt Jeftha: Israel heeft het land der Moabieten, en het land der kinderen Ammons niet genomen; 16Want als zij uit Egypte optogen, zo wandelde Israel door de woestijn tot aan de Schelfzee, en kwam te Kades. 17En Israel zond boden tot de koning der Edomieten, zeggende: Laat mij toch door uw land doortrekken; maar de koning der Edomieten gaf geen gehoor. En hij zond ook tot de koning der Moabieten, die ook niet wilde. Alzo bleef Israel in Kades. 18Daarna wandelde hij in de woestijn, en toog om het land der Edomieten en het land der Moabieten, en kwam van den opgang der zon aan het land der Moabieten, en zij legerden zich op gene zijde van de Arnon; maar zij kwamen niet binnen de landpale der Moabieten; want de Arnon is de landpale der Moabieten. 19Maar Israel zond boden tot Sihon, den koning der Amorieten, koning van Hesbon, en Israel zeide tot hem: Laat ons toch door uw land doortrekken tot aan mijn plaats. 20Doch Sihon betrouwde Israel niet door zijn landpale door te trekken; maar Sihon verzamelde al zijn volk, en zij legerden zich te Jaza; en hij streed tegen Israel. 21En de HEERE, de God Israels, gaf Sihon met al zijn volk in de hand van Israel, dat zij hen sloegen; alzo nam Israel erfelijk in het ganse land der Amorieten, die in datzelve land woonden. 22En zij namen erfelijk in de ganse landpale der Amorieten, van de Arnon af tot aan de Jabbok, en van de woestijn tot aan de Jordaan. 23Zo heeft nu de HEERE, de God Israels, de Amorieten voor het aangezicht van zijn volk Israel uit de bezitting verdreven; en zoudt gij hunlieder erfgenaam zijn? 24Zoudt gij niet dengene erven, dien uw god Kamos voor u uit de bezitting verdreef? Alzo zullen wij al dengene erven, dien de HEERE, onze God, voor ons aangezicht uit de bezitting verdrijft. 25Nu voorts, zijt gij veel beter dan Balak, de zoon van Zippor, de koning der Moabieten? heeft hij ooit met Israel getwist? heeft hij ook ooit tegen hen gekrijgd? 26Terwijl Israel driehonderd jaren gewoond heeft in Hesbon, en in haar stedekens, en in Aroer, en in al de stedekens, en in al de steden, die aan de zijde van de Arnon zijn; waarom hebt gij het dan in die tijd niet gered? 27Ook heb ik tegen u niet gezondigd, maar gij doet kwalijk bij mij, dat gij tegen mij krijgt; de HEERE, Die Rechter is, richte heden tussen de kinderen Israels en tussen de kinderen Ammons! 28Maar de koning der kinderen Ammons hoorde niet naar de woorden van Jeftha, die hij tot hem gezonden had. 29Toen kwam de Geest des HEEREN op Jeftha, dat hij Gilead en Manasse doortrok; want hij trok door tot Mizpa in Gilead, en van Mizpa in Gilead trok hij door tot de kinderen Ammons. 30En Jeftha beloofde den HEERE een gelofte, en zeide: Indien Gij de kinderen Ammons ganselijk in mijn hand zult geven; 31Zo zal het uitgaande, dat uit de deur van mijn huis mij tegemoet zal uitgaan, als ik met vrede van de kinderen Ammons wederkom, dat zal des HEEREN zijn, en ik zal het offeren ten brandoffer. 32Alzo trok Jeftha door naar de kinderen Ammons, om tegen hen te strijden; en de HEERE gaf hen in zijn hand. 33En hij sloeg hen van Aroer af tot daar gij komt te Minnith, twintig steden, en tot aan Abel-Keramim, met een zeer groten slag. Alzo werden de kinderen Ammons ten ondergebracht voor het aangezicht der kinderen Israels. 34Toen nu Jeftha te Mizpa bij zijn huis kwam, ziet, zo ging zijn dochter uit hem tegemoet, met trommelen en met reien. Zij nu was alleen, een enig kind; hij had uit zich anders geen zoon of dochter. 35En het geschiedde, als hij haar zag, zo verscheurde hij zijn klederen, en zeide: Ach, mijn dochter! gij hebt mij ganselijk nedergebogen, en gij zijt onder degenen, die mij beroeren; want ik heb mijn mond opengedaan tot den HEERE, en ik zal niet kunnen teruggaan. 36En zij zeide tot hem: Mijn vader! hebt gij uw mond opengedaan tot den HEERE, doe mij, gelijk als uit uw mond gegaan is; naardien u de HEERE volkomene wraak gegeven heeft van uw vijanden, van de kinderen Ammons. 37Voorts zeide zij tot haar vader: Laat deze zaak aan mij geschieden: Laat twee maanden van mij af, dat ik heenga, en ga tot de bergen, en bewene mijn maagdom, ik en mijn gezellinnen. 38En hij zeide: Ga heen; en hij liet haar twee maanden gaan. Toen ging zij heen met haar gezellinnen, en beweende haar maagdom op de bergen. 39En het geschiedde ten einde van twee maanden dat zij tot haar vader wederkwam, die aan haar volbracht zijn gelofte, die hij beloofd had; en zij heeft geen man bekend. Voorts werd het een gewoonheid in Israel, 40Dat de dochteren Israels van jaar tot jaar heengingen, om de dochter van Jeftha, de Gileadiet, aan te spreken, vier dagen in het jaar.
