1Samson partit pour Gaza ; il y vit une femme prostituée, et il entra chez elle. 2On dit aux gens de Gaza : Samson est arrivé ici. Et ils l’environnèrent, et se tinrent en embuscade toute la nuit à la porte de la ville. Ils restèrent tranquilles toute la nuit, disant : Au point du jour, nous le tuerons. 3Samson demeura couché jusqu’à minuit . Vers minuit , il se leva ; et il saisit les battants de la porte de la ville et les deux poteaux, les arracha avec la barre, les mit sur ses épaules, et les porta sur le sommet de la montagne qui est en face d’Hébron. 4Après cela, il aima une femme dans la vallée de Sorek. Elle se nommait Delila. 5Les princes des Philistins montèrent vers elle, et lui dirent : Flatte-le, pour savoir d’où lui vient sa grande force et comment nous pourrions nous rendre maîtres de lui ; nous le lierons pour le dompter, et nous te donnerons chacun mille et cent sicles d’argent. 6Delila dit à Samson : Dis-moi, je te prie, d’où vient ta grande force, et avec quoi il faudrait te lier pour te dompter. 7Samson lui dit : Si on me liait avec sept cordes fraîches, qui ne fussent pas encore sèches, je deviendrais faible et je serais comme un autre homme. 8Les princes des Philistins apportèrent à Delila sept cordes fraîches, qui n’étaient pas encore sèches. Et elle le lia avec ces cordes. 9Or des gens se tenaient en embuscade chez elle, dans une chambre. Elle lui dit : Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson ! Et il rompit les cordes, comme se rompt un cordon d’étoupe quand il sent le feu. Et l’on ne connut point d’où venait sa force. 10Delila dit à Samson : Voici, tu t’es joué de moi, tu m’as dit des mensonges. Maintenant, je te prie, indique-moi avec quoi il faut te lier. 11Il lui dit : Si on me liait avec des cordes neuves, dont on ne se fût jamais servi, je deviendrais faible et je serais comme un autre homme. 12Delila prit des cordes neuves, avec lesquelles elle le lia. Puis elle lui dit : Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson ! Or des gens se tenaient en embuscade dans une chambre. Et il rompit comme un fil les cordes qu’il avait aux bras. 13Delila dit à Samson : Jusqu’à présent tu t’es joué de moi, tu m’as dit des mensonges. Déclare-moi avec quoi il faut te lier. Il lui dit : Tu n’as qu’à tisser les sept tresses de ma tête avec la chaîne du tissu. 14Et elle les fixa par la cheville. Puis elle lui dit : Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson ! Et il se réveilla de son sommeil, et il arracha la cheville du tissu et le tissu. 15Elle lui dit : Comment peux-tu dire : Je t’aime ! puisque ton cœur n’est pas avec moi ? Voilà trois fois que tu t’es joué de moi, et tu ne m’as pas déclaré d’où vient ta grande force. 16Comme elle était chaque jour à le tourmenter et à l’importuner par ses instances, son âme s’impatienta à la mort, 17il lui ouvrit tout son cœur, et lui dit : Le rasoir n’a point passé sur ma tête, parce que je suis consacré à Dieu dès le ventre de ma mère. Si j’étais rasé, ma force m’abandonnerait, je deviendrais faible, et je serais comme tout autre homme. 18Delila, voyant qu’il lui avait ouvert tout son cœur, envoya appeler les princes des Philistins, et leur fit dire : Montez cette fois, car il m’a ouvert tout son cœur. Et les princes des Philistins montèrent vers elle, et apportèrent l’argent dans leurs mains. 19Elle l’endormit sur ses genoux. Et ayant appelé un homme, elle rasa les sept tresses de la tête de Samson, et commença ainsi à le dompter. Il perdit sa force. 20Elle dit alors : Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson ! Et il se réveilla de son sommeil, et dit : Je m’en tirerai comme les autres fois, et je me dégagerai. Il ne savait pas que l’Éternel s’était retiré de lui. 21Les Philistins le saisirent, et lui crevèrent les yeux ; ils le firent descendre à Gaza, et le lièrent avec des chaînes d’airain. Il tournait la meule dans la prison. 22Cependant les cheveux de sa tête recommençaient à croître, depuis qu’il avait été rasé. 23Or les princes des Philistins s’assemblèrent pour offrir un grand sacrifice à Dagon, leur dieu, et pour se réjouir. Ils disaient : Notre dieu a livré entre nos mains Samson, notre ennemi. 24Et quand le peuple le vit, ils célébrèrent leur dieu, en disant : Notre dieu a livré entre nos mains notre ennemi, celui qui ravageait notre pays, et qui multipliait nos morts. 25Dans la joie de leur cœur, ils dirent : Qu’on appelle Samson, et qu’il nous divertisse ! Ils firent sortir Samson de la prison, et il joua devant eux. Ils le placèrent entre les colonnes. 26Et Samson dit au jeune homme qui le tenait par la main : Laisse-moi, afin que je puisse toucher les colonnes sur lesquelles repose la maison et m’appuyer contre elles. 27La maison était remplie d’hommes et de femmes ; tous les princes des Philistins étaient là, et il y avait sur le toit environ trois mille personnes, hommes et femmes, qui regardaient Samson jouer. 28Alors Samson invoqua l’Éternel, et dit : Seigneur Éternel ! souviens-toi de moi, je te prie ; ô Dieu ! donne-moi de la force seulement cette fois, et que d’un seul coup je tire vengeance des Philistins pour mes deux yeux ! 29Et Samson embrassa les deux colonnes du milieu sur lesquelles reposait la maison, et il s’appuya contre elles ; l’une était à sa droite, et l’autre à sa gauche. 30Samson dit : Que je meure avec les Philistins ! Il se pencha fortement, et la maison tomba sur les princes et sur tout le peuple qui y était. Ceux qu’il fit périr à sa mort furent plus nombreux que ceux qu’il avait tués pendant sa vie. 31Ses frères et toute la maison de son père descendirent, et l’emportèrent. Lorsqu’ils furent remontés, ils l’enterrèrent entre Tsorea et Eschthaol dans le sépulcre de Manoach, son père. Il avait été juge en Israël pendant vingt ans.
1Samson went to Gaza, and saw there a prostitute, and went in to her. 2The Gazites were told, “Samson is here!” They surrounded him, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, “Wait until morning light, then we will kill him.” 3Samson lay until midnight, and arose at midnight, and laid hold of the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and plucked them up, bar and all, and put them on his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of the mountain that is before Hebron. 4It came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. 5The lords of the Philistines came up to her, and said to her, “Entice him, and see in which his great strength lies, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him; and we will each give you eleven hundred pieces of silver.” 6Delilah said to Samson, “Please tell me where your great strength lies, and what you might be bound to afflict you.” 7Samson said to her, “If they bind me with seven green cords that were never dried, then shall I become weak, and be as another man.” 8Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green cords which had not been dried, and she bound him with them. 9Now she had an ambush waiting in the inner room. She said to him, “The Philistines are on you, Samson!” He broke the cords, as a string of tow is broken when it touches the fire. So his strength was not known. 10Delilah said to Samson, “Behold, you have mocked me, and told me lies: now please tell me with which you might be bound.” 11He said to her, “If they only bind me with new ropes with which no work has been done, then shall I become weak, and be as another man.” 12So Delilah took new ropes, and bound him therewith, and said to him, “The Philistines are on you, Samson!” The ambush was waiting in the inner room. He broke them off his arms like a thread. 13Delilah said to Samson, “Until now, you have mocked me and told me lies. Tell me with what you might be bound.” He said to her, “If you weave the seven locks of my head with the web.” 14She fastened it with the pin, and said to him, “The Philistines are on you, Samson!” He awakened out of his sleep, and plucked away the pin of the beam, and the web. 15She said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when your heart is not with me? You have mocked me these three times, and have not told me where your great strength lies.” 16When she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, his soul was troubled to death. 17He told her all his heart, and said to her, “No razor has ever come on my head; for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb. If I am shaved, then my strength will go from me, and I will become weak, and be like any other man.” 18When Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, “Come up this once, for he has told me all his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and brought the money in their hand. 19She made him sleep on her knees; and she called for a man, and shaved off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. 20She said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” He awoke out of his sleep, and said, “I will go out as at other times, and shake myself free.” But he didn’t know that Yahweh had departed from him. 21The Philistines laid hold on him, and put out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he ground at the mill in the prison. 22However the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaved. 23The lords of the Philistines gathered them together to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice; for they said, “Our god has delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.” 24When the people saw him, they praised their god; for they said, “Our god has delivered our enemy and the destroyer of our country, who has slain many of us, into our hand.” 25When their hearts were merry, they said, “Call for Samson, that he may entertain us.” They called for Samson out of the prison; and he performed before them. They set him between the pillars; 26and Samson said to the boy who held him by the hand, “Allow me to feel the pillars whereupon the house rests, that I may lean on them.” 27Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were on the roof about three thousand men and women, who saw while Samson performed. 28Samson called to Yahweh, and said, “Lord Yahweh, remember me, please, and strengthen me, please, only this once, God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.” 29Samson took hold of the two middle pillars on which the house rested, and leaned on them, the one with his right hand, and the other with his left. 30Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” He bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell on the lords, and on all the people who were therein. So the dead that he killed at his death were more than those who he killed in his life. 31Then his brothers and all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the burial site of Manoah his father. He judged Israel twenty years.
1Simson nu ging heen naar Gaza; en hij zag aldaar een vrouw, die een hoer was; en hij ging tot haar in. 2Toen werd de Gazieten gezegd: Simson is hier in ingekomen; zo gingen zij rondom, en legden hem den gansen nacht lagen in de stadspoort; doch zij hielden zich den gansen nacht stil, zeggende: Tot aan het morgenlicht, dan zullen wij hem doden. 3Maar Simson lag tot middernacht toe; toen stond hij op ter middernacht, en hij greep de deuren der stadspoort met de beide posten, en nam ze weg met den grendelboom, en legde ze op zijn schouderen, en droeg ze opwaarts op de hoogte des bergs, die in het gezicht van Hebron is. 4En het geschiedde daarna, dat hij een vrouw lief kreeg, aan de beek Sorek, welker naam was Delila. 5Toen kwamen de vorsten der Filistijnen tot haar op, en zeiden tot haar: Overreed hem, en zie, waarin zijn grote kracht zij, en waarmede wij hem zouden machtig worden, en hem binden, om hem te plagen; zo zullen wij u geven, een iegelijk, duizend en honderd zilverlingen. 6Delila dan zeide tot Simson: Verklaar mij toch, waarin uw grote kracht zij, en waarmede gij zoudt kunnen gebonden worden, dat men u plage. 7En Simson zeide tot haar: Indien zij mij bonden met zeven verse zelen, die niet verdroogd zijn, zo zou ik zwak worden, en wezen als een ander mens. 8Toen brachten de vorsten der Filistijnen tot haar op zeven verse zelen, die niet verdroogd waren; en zij bond hem daarmede. 9De achterlage nu zat bij haar in een kamer. Zo zeide zij tot hem: De Filistijnen over u, Simson! Toen verbrak hij de zelen, gelijk als een snoertje van grof vlas verbroken wordt, als het vuur riekt. Alzo werd zijn kracht niet bekend. 10Toen zeide Delila tot Simson: Zie, gij hebt met mij gespot, en leugenen tot mij gesproken; verklaar mij toch nu, waarmede gij zoudt kunnen gebonden worden? 11En hij zeide tot haar: Indien zij mij vastbonden met nieuwe touwen, met dewelke geen werk gedaan is, zo zou ik zwak worden, en wezen als een ander mens. 12Toen nam Delila nieuwe touwen, en bond hem daarmede, en zeide tot hem: De Filistijnen over u, Simson! (De achterlage nu was zittende in een kamer.) Toen verbrak hij ze van zijn armen als een draad. 13En Delila zeide tot Simson: Tot hiertoe hebt gij met mij gespot, en leugenen tot mij gesproken; verklaar mij toch nu, waarmede gij zoudt kunnen gebonden worden. En hij zeide tot haar: Indien gij de zeven haarlokken mijns hoofds vlochtet aan een weversboom. 14En zij maakte ze vast met een pin, en zeide tot hem: De Filistijnen over u, Simson! Toen waakte hij op uit zijn slaap, en nam weg de pin der gevlochten haarlokken, en den weversboom. 15Toen zeide zij tot hem: Hoe zult gij zeggen: Ik heb u lief, daar uw hart niet met mij is? Gij hebt nu driemaal met mij gespot, en mij niet verklaard, waarin uw grote kracht zij. 16En het geschiedde, als zij hem alle dagen met haar woorden perste, en hem moeilijk viel, dat zijn ziel verdrietig werd tot stervens toe; 17Zo verklaarde hij haar zijn ganse hart, en zeide tot haar: Er is nooit een scheermes op mijn hoofd gekomen, want ik ben een Nazireer Gods van mijn moeders buik af; indien ik geschoren wierd, zo zou mijn kracht van mij wijken, en ik zou zwak worden, en wezen als alle de mensen. 18Als nu Delila zag, dat hij haar zijn ganse hart verklaard had, zo zond zij heen, en riep de vorsten der Filistijnen, zeggende: Komt ditmaal op, want hij heeft mij zijn ganse hart verklaard. En de vorsten der Filistijnen kwamen tot haar op, en brachten dat geld in hun hand. 19Toen deed zij hem slapen op haar knieen, en riep een man en liet hem de zeven haarlokken zijns hoofds afscheren, en zij begon hem te plagen; en zijn kracht week van hem. 20En zij zeide: De Filistijnen over u, Simson! En hij ontwaakte uit zijn slaap, en zeide: Ik zal ditmaal uitgaan, als op andere malen, en mij uitschudden; want hij wist niet, dat de HEERE van hem geweken was. 21Toen grepen hem de Filistijnen, en groeven zijn ogen uit; en zij voerden hem af naar Gaza, en bonden hem met twee koperen ketenen, en hij was malende in het gevangenhuis. 22En het haar zijns hoofds begon weder te wassen, gelijk toen hij geschoren werd. 23Toen verzamelden zich de vorsten der Filistijnen, om hun god Dagon een groot offer te offeren, en tot vrolijkheid; en zij zeiden: Onze god heeft onze vijand Simson in onze hand gegeven. 24Desgelijks als hem het volk zag, loofden zij hun god, want zij zeiden: Onze god heeft in onze hand gegeven onzen vijand, en die ons land verwoestte, en die onzer verslagenen velen maakte! 25En het geschiedde, als hun hart vrolijk was, dat zij zeiden: Roept Simson, dat hij voor ons spele. En zij riepen Simson uit het gevangenhuis; en hij speelde voor hun aangezichten, en zij deden hem staan tussen de pilaren. 26Toen zeide Simson tot den jongen, die hem bij de hand hield: Laat mij gaan, dat ik de pilaren betaste, op dewelke het huis gevestigd is, dat ik daaraan leune. 27Het huis nu was vol mannen en vrouwen; ook waren daar alle vorsten der Filistijnen; en op het dak waren omtrent drie duizend mannen en vrouwen, die toezagen, als Simson speelde. 28Toen riep Simson tot den HEERE, en zeide: Heere, HEERE! gedenk toch mijner, en sterk mij toch alleenlijk ditmaal, o God! dat ik mij met een wrake voor mijn twee ogen aan de Filistijnen wreke. 29En Simson vatte de twee middelste pilaren, op dewelke het huis was gevestigd, en waarop het steunde, de enen met zijn rechterhand, en den anderen met zijn linkerhand; 30En Simson zeide: Mijn ziel sterve met de Filistijnen; en hij boog zich met kracht, en het huis viel op de vorsten, en op al het volk, dat daarin was. En de doden, die hij in zijn sterven gedood heeft, waren meer, dan die hij in zijn leven gedood had. 31Toen kwamen zijn broeders af, en het ganse huis zijns vaders, en namen hem op, en brachten hem opwaarts, en begroeven hem tussen Zora en tussen Esthaol, in het graf van zijn vader Manoach; hij nu had Israel gericht twintig jaren.
