1Les enfants d’Israël firent encore ce qui déplaît à l’Éternel ; et l’Éternel les livra entre les mains des Philistins, pendant quarante ans. 2Il y avait un homme de Tsorea, de la famille des Danites, et qui s’appelait Manoach. Sa femme était stérile, et n’enfantait pas. 3Un ange de l’Éternel apparut à la femme, et lui dit : Voici, tu es stérile, et tu n’as point d’enfants ; tu deviendras enceinte, et tu enfanteras un fils. 4Maintenant prends bien garde, ne bois ni vin ni liqueur forte, et ne mange rien d’impur. 5Car tu vas devenir enceinte et tu enfanteras un fils. Le rasoir ne passera point sur sa tête, parce que cet enfant sera consacré à Dieu dès le ventre de sa mère ; et ce sera lui qui commencera à délivrer Israël de la main des Philistins. 6La femme alla dire à son mari ; Un homme de Dieu est venu vers moi, et il avait l’aspect d’un ange de Dieu, un aspect redoutable. Je ne lui ai pas demandé d’où il était, et il ne m’a pas fait connaître son nom. 7Mais il m’a dit : Tu vas devenir enceinte, et tu enfanteras un fils ; et maintenant ne bois ni vin ni liqueur forte, et ne mange rien d’impur, parce que cet enfant sera consacré à Dieu dès le ventre de sa mère jusqu’au jour de sa mort. 8Manoach fit cette prière à l’Éternel : Ah ! Seigneur, que l’homme de Dieu que tu as envoyé vienne encore vers nous, et qu’il nous enseigne ce que nous devons faire pour l’enfant qui naîtra ! 9Dieu exauça la prière de Manoach, et l’ange de Dieu vint encore vers la femme. Elle était assise dans un champ, et Manoach, son mari, n’était pas avec elle. 10Elle courut promptement donner cette nouvelle à son mari, et lui dit : Voici, l’homme qui était venu l’autre jour vers moi m’est apparu. 11Manoach se leva, suivit sa femme, alla vers l’homme, et lui dit : Est-ce toi qui as parlé à cette femme ? Il répondit : C’est moi. 12Manoach dit : Maintenant, si ta parole s’accomplit, que faudra-t-il observer à l’égard de l’enfant, et qu’y aura-t-il à faire ? 13L’ange de l’Éternel répondit à Manoach : La femme s’abstiendra de tout ce que je lui ai dit. 14Elle ne goûtera d’aucun produit de la vigne, elle ne boira ni vin ni liqueur forte, et elle ne mangera rien d’impur ; elle observera tout ce que je lui ai prescrit. 15Manoach dit à l’ange de l’Éternel : Permets-nous de te retenir, et de t’apprêter un chevreau. 16L’ange de l’Éternel répondit à Manoach : Quand tu me retiendrais, je ne mangerais pas de ton mets ; mais si tu veux faire un holocauste, tu l’offriras à l’Éternel. Manoach ne savait point que ce fût un ange de l’Éternel. 17Et Manoach dit à l’ange de l’Éternel : Quel est ton nom, afin que nous te rendions gloire, quand ta parole s’accomplira ? 18L’ange de l’Éternel lui répondit : Pourquoi demandes-tu mon nom ? Il est merveilleux. 19Manoach prit le chevreau et l’offrande, et fit un sacrifice à l’Éternel sur le rocher. Il s’opéra un prodige, pendant que Manoach et sa femme regardaient. 20Comme la flamme montait de dessus l’autel vers le ciel, l’ange de l’Éternel monta dans la flamme de l’autel. À cette vue, Manoach et sa femme tombèrent la face contre terre. 21L’ange de l’Éternel n’apparut plus à Manoach et à sa femme. Alors Manoach comprit que c’était l’ange de l’Éternel, 22et il dit à sa femme : Nous allons mourir, car nous avons vu Dieu. 23Sa femme lui répondit : Si l’Éternel eût voulu nous faire mourir, il n’aurait pas pris de nos mains l’holocauste et l’offrande, il ne nous aurait pas fait voir tout cela, et il ne nous aurait pas maintenant fait entendre pareilles choses. 24La femme enfanta un fils, et lui donna le nom de Samson. L’enfant grandit, et l’Éternel le bénit. 25Et l’esprit de l’Éternel commença à l’agiter à Machané-Dan, entre Tsorea et Eschthaol.
1The children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh; and Yahweh delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years. 2There was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and didn’t bear. 3Yahweh’s angel appeared to the woman, and said to her, “See now, you are barren, and don’t bear; but you shall conceive, and bear a son. 4Now therefore please beware and drink no wine nor strong drink, and don’t eat any unclean thing: 5for, behold, you shall conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head; for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb: and he shall begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.” 6Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, “A man of God came to me, and his face was like the face of the angel of God, very awesome; and I didn’t ask him where he was from, neither did he tell me his name: 7but he said to me, ‘Behold, you shall conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing; for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.’” 8Then Manoah entreated Yahweh, and said, “Oh, Lord, please let the man of God whom you did send come again to us, and teach us what we shall do to the child who shall be born.” 9God listened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again to the woman as she sat in the field: but Manoah, her husband, wasn’t with her. 10The woman made haste, and ran, and told her husband, and said to him, “Behold, the man has appeared to me, who came to me that day.” 11Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said to him, “Are you the man who spoke to the woman?” He said, “I am.” 12Manoah said, “Now let your words happen. What shall the child’s way of life and mission be?” 13Yahweh’s angel said to Manoah, “Of all that I said to the woman let her beware. 14She may not eat of anything that comes of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing; all that I commanded her let her observe.” 15Manoah said to Yahweh’s angel, “Please, let us detain you, that we may make a young goat ready for you.” 16Yahweh’s angel said to Manoah, “Though you detain me, I won’t eat of your bread; and if you will prepare a burnt offering, you must offer it to Yahweh.” For Manoah didn’t know that he was Yahweh’s angel. 17Manoah said to Yahweh’s angel, “What is your name, that when your words happen, we may honor you?” 18Yahweh’s angel said to him, “Why do you ask about my name, since it is wonderful?” 19So Manoah took the young goat with the meal offering, and offered it on the rock to Yahweh. Then the angel did a wonderful thing as Manoah and his wife looked on. 20For when the flame went up toward the sky from off the altar, Yahweh’s angel ascended in the flame of the altar: and Manoah and his wife looked on; and they fell on their faces to the ground. 21But Yahweh’s angel didn’t appear to Manoah or to his wife any more. Then Manoah knew that he was Yahweh’s angel. 22Manoah said to his wife, “We shall surely die, because we have seen God.” 23But his wife said to him, “If Yahweh were pleased to kill us, he wouldn’t have received a burnt offering and a meal offering at our hand, neither would he have shown us all these things, nor would at this time have told such things as these.” 24The woman bore a son, and named him Samson: and the child grew, and Yahweh blessed him. 25The Spirit of Yahweh began to move him in Mahaneh Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.
1En de kinderen Israels voeren voort te doen, dat kwaad was in de ogen des HEEREN; zo gaf de HEERE hen in de hand der Filistijnen veertig jaren. 2En er was een man van Zora, uit het geslacht van een Daniet, wiens naam was Manoach; en zijn huisvrouw was onvruchtbaar en baarde niet. 3En een Engel des HEEREN verscheen aan deze vrouw, en Hij zeide tot haar: Zie nu, gij zijt onvruchtbaar, en hebt niet gebaard; maar gij zult zwanger worden, en een zoon baren. 4Zo wacht u toch nu, en drink geen wijn noch sterken drank, en eet niets onreins. 5Want zie, gij zult zwanger worden, en een zoon baren, op wiens hoofd geen scheermes zal komen; want dat knechtje zal een Nazireer Gods zijn, van moeders buik af; en hij zal beginnen Israel te verlossen uit der Filistijnen hand. 6Toen kwam deze vrouw in, en sprak tot haar man, zeggende: Er kwam een Man Gods tot mij, Wiens aangezicht was als het aangezicht van een Engel Gods, zeer vreselijk; en ik vraagde Hem niet, van waar Hij was, en Zijn naam gaf Hij mij niet te kennen. 7Maar Hij zeide tot mij: Zie, gij zult zwanger worden, en een zoon baren; zo drink nu geen wijn noch sterken drank, en eet niets onreins; want dat knechtje zal een Nazireer Gods zijn, van moeders buik af tot op de dag zijns doods. 8Toen aanbad Manoach den HEERE vuriglijk, en zeide: Och, HEERE! dat toch de Man Gods, Dien Gij gezonden hebt, weder tot ons kome, en ons lere, wat wij dat knechtje doen zullen, dat geboren zal worden. 9En God verhoorde de stem van Manoach; en de Engel Gods kwam wederom tot de vrouw. Zij nu zat in het veld, doch haar man Manoach was niet bij haar. 10Zo haastte de vrouw, en liep, en gaf het haar man te kennen; en zij zeide tot hem: Zie, die Man is mij verschenen, Welke op dien dag tot mij kwam. 11Toen stond Manoach op, en ging zijn huisvrouw na; en hij kwam tot dien Man, en zeide tot Hem: Zijt gij die Man, Dewelke tot deze vrouw gesproken hebt? En Hij zeide: Ik ben het. 12Toen zeide Manoach: Nu, dat Uw woorden komen; maar wat zal des knechtjes wijze en zijn werk zijn? 13En de Engel des HEEREN zeide tot Manoach: Van alles, wat Ik tot de vrouw gezegd heb, zal zij zich wachten. 14Zij zal niet eten van iets, dat van de wijnstok des wijns voortkomt; en wijn en sterke drank zal zij niet drinken, noch iets onreins eten; al wat Ik haar geboden heb, zal zij onderhouden. 15Toen zeide Manoach tot den Engel des HEEREN: Laat ons U toch ophouden, en een geitenbokje voor Uw aangezicht bereiden. 16Maar de Engel des HEEREN zeide tot Manoach: Indien gij Mij zult ophouden, Ik zal van uw brood niet eten; en indien gij een brandoffer zult doen, dat zult gij den HEERE offeren. Want Manoach wist niet, dat het een Engel des HEEREN was. 17En Manoach zeide tot den Engel des HEEREN: Wat is Uw naam, opdat wij U vereren, wanneer Uw woord zal komen. 18En de Engel des HEEREN zeide tot hem: Waarom vraagt gij dus naar Mijn naam? Die is toch Wonderlijk. 19Toen nam Manoach een geitenbokje, en het spijsoffer, en offerde het op den rotssteen, den HEERE. En Hij handelde wonderlijk in Zijn doen; en Manoach en zijn huisvrouw zagen toe. 20En het geschiedde, als de vlam van het altaar opvoer naar den hemel, zo voer de Engel des HEEREN op in de vlam des altaars. Als Manoach en zijn huisvrouw dat zagen, zo vielen zij op hun aangezichten ter aarde. 21En de Engel des HEEREN verscheen niet meer aan Manoach, en aan zijn huisvrouw. Toen bekende Manoach, dat het een Engel des HEEREN was. 22En Manoach zeide tot zijn huisvrouw: Wij zullen zekerlijk sterven, omdat wij God gezien hebben. 23Maar zijn huisvrouw zeide tot hem: Zo de HEERE lust had ons te doden, Hij had het brandoffer en spijsoffer van onze hand niet aangenomen, noch ons dit alles getoond, noch ons om dezen tijd laten horen, zulks als dit is. 24Daarna baarde deze vrouw een zoon, en zij noemde zijn naam Simson; en dat knechtje werd groot, en de HEERE zegende het. 25En de Geest des HEEREN begon hem bij wijlen te drijven in het leger van Dan, tussen Zora en tussen Esthaol.
