1La famine s’appesantissait sur le pays. 2Quand ils eurent fini de manger le blé qu’ils avaient apporté d’Égypte, Jacob dit à ses fils : Retournez, achetez-nous un peu de vivres. 3Juda lui répondit : Cet homme nous a fait cette déclaration formelle : Vous ne verrez pas ma face, à moins que votre frère ne soit avec vous. 4Si donc tu veux envoyer notre frère avec nous, nous descendrons, et nous t’achèterons des vivres. 5Mais si tu ne veux pas l’envoyer, nous ne descendrons point, car cet homme nous a dit : Vous ne verrez pas ma face, à moins que votre frère ne soit avec vous. 6Israël dit alors : Pourquoi avez-vous mal agi à mon égard, en disant à cet homme que vous aviez encore un frère ? 7Ils répondirent : Cet homme nous a interrogés sur nous et sur notre famille, en disant : Votre père vit-il encore ? avez-vous un frère ? Et nous avons répondu à ces questions. Pouvions-nous savoir qu’il dirait : Faites descendre votre frère ? 8Juda dit à Israël, son père : Laisse venir l’enfant avec moi, afin que nous nous levions et que nous partions ; et nous vivrons et ne mourrons pas, nous, toi, et nos enfants. 9Je réponds de lui ; tu le redemanderas de ma main. Si je ne le ramène pas auprès de toi et si je ne le remets pas devant ta face, je serai pour toujours coupable envers toi. 10Car si nous n’eussions pas tardé, nous serions maintenant deux fois de retour. 11Israël, leur père, leur dit : Puisqu’il le faut, faites ceci. Prenez dans vos sacs des meilleures productions du pays, pour en porter un présent à cet homme, un peu de baume et un peu de miel, des aromates, de la myrrhe, des pistaches et des amandes. 12Prenez avec vous de l’argent au double, et remportez l’argent qu’on avait mis à l’entrée de vos sacs : peut-être était-ce une erreur. 13Prenez votre frère, et levez-vous ; retournez vers cet homme. 14Que le Dieu tout-puissant vous fasse trouver grâce devant cet homme, et qu’il laisse revenir avec vous votre autre frère et Benjamin ! Et moi, si je dois être privé de mes enfants, que j’en sois privé ! 15Ils prirent le présent ; ils prirent avec eux de l’argent au double, ainsi que Benjamin ; ils se levèrent, descendirent en Égypte, et se présentèrent devant Joseph. 16Dès que Joseph vit avec eux Benjamin, il dit à son intendant : Fais entrer ces gens dans la maison, tue et apprête ; car ces gens mangeront avec moi à midi. 17Cet homme fit ce que Joseph avait ordonné, et il conduisit ces gens dans la maison de Joseph. 18Ils eurent peur lorsqu’ils furent conduits à la maison de Joseph, et ils dirent : C’est à cause de l’argent remis l’autre fois dans nos sacs qu’on nous emmène ; c’est pour se jeter sur nous, se précipiter sur nous ; c’est pour nous prendre comme esclaves, et s’emparer de nos ânes. 19Ils s’approchèrent de l’intendant de la maison de Joseph, et lui adressèrent la parole, à l’entrée de la maison. 20Ils dirent : Pardon ! mon seigneur, nous sommes déjà descendus une fois pour acheter des vivres. 21Puis, quand nous arrivâmes, au lieu où nous devions passer la nuit, nous avons ouvert nos sacs ; et voici, l’argent de chacun était à l’entrée de son sac, notre argent selon son poids : nous le rapportons avec nous. 22Nous avons aussi apporté d’autre argent, pour acheter des vivres. Nous ne savons pas qui avait mis notre argent dans nos sacs. 23L’intendant répondit : Que la paix soit avec vous ! Ne craignez rien. C’est votre Dieu, le Dieu de votre père, qui vous a donné un trésor dans vos sacs. Votre argent m’est parvenu. Et il leur amena Siméon. 24Cet homme les fit entrer dans la maison de Joseph ; il leur donna de l’eau et ils se lavèrent les pieds ; il donna aussi du fourrage à leurs ânes. 25Ils préparèrent leur présent, en attendant que Joseph vienne à midi ; car on les avait informés qu’ils mangeraient chez lui. 26Quand Joseph fut arrivé à la maison, ils lui offrirent le présent qu’ils avaient apporté, et ils se prosternèrent en terre devant lui. 27Il leur demanda comment ils se portaient ; et il dit : Votre vieux père, dont vous avez parlé, est-il en bonne santé ? vit-il encore ? 28Ils répondirent : Ton serviteur, notre père, est en bonne santé ; il vit encore. Et ils s’inclinèrent et se prosternèrent. 29Joseph leva les yeux ; et, jetant un regard sur Benjamin, son frère, fils de sa mère, il dit : Est-ce là votre jeune frère, dont vous m’avez parlé ? Et il ajouta : Dieu te fasse miséricorde, mon fils ! 30Ses entrailles étaient émues pour son frère, et il avait besoin de pleurer ; il entra précipitamment dans une chambre, et il y pleura. 31Après s’être lavé le visage, il en sortit ; et, faisant des efforts pour se contenir, il dit : Servez à manger. 32On servit Joseph à part, et ses frères à part ; les Égyptiens qui mangeaient avec lui furent aussi servis à part, car les Égyptiens ne pouvaient pas manger avec les Hébreux, parce que c’est à leurs yeux une abomination. 33Les frères de Joseph s’assirent en sa présence, le premier-né selon son droit d’aînesse, et le plus jeune selon son âge ; et ils se regardaient les uns les autres avec étonnement. 34Joseph leur fit porter des mets qui étaient devant lui, et Benjamin en eut cinq fois plus que les autres. Ils burent, et s’égayèrent avec lui.
1The famine was severe in the land. 2When they had eaten up the grain which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said to them, “Go again, buy us a little more food.” 3Judah spoke to him, saying, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’ 4If you’ll send our brother with us, we’ll go down and buy you food, 5but if you’ll not send him, we’ll not go down, for the man said to us, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’” 6Israel said, “Why did you treat me so badly, telling the man that you had another brother?” 7They said, “The man asked directly concerning ourselves, and concerning our relatives, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?’ We just answered his questions. Is there any way we could know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down?’” 8Judah said to Israel, his father, “Send the boy with me, and we’ll get up and go, so that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and also our little ones. 9I’ll be collateral for him. From my hand will you require him. If I don’t bring him to you, and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever, 10for if we hadn’t delayed, surely we would have returned a second time by now.” 11Their father, Israel, said to them, “If it must be so, then do this. Take from the choice fruits of the land in your bags, and carry down a present for the man, a little balm, a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts, and almonds; 12and take double money in your hand, and take back the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks. Perhaps it was an oversight. 13Take your brother also, get up, and return to the man. 14May God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release to you your other brother and Benjamin. If I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.” 15The men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and got up, went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph. 16When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and butcher an animal, and prepare; for the men will dine with me at noon.” 17The man did as Joseph commanded, and the man brought the men to Joseph’s house. 18The men were afraid, because they were brought to Joseph’s house; and they said, “Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time, we’re brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, attack us, and seize us as slaves, along with our donkeys.” 19They came near to the steward of Joseph’s house, and they spoke to him at the door of the house, 20and said, “Oh, my lord, we indeed came down the first time to buy food. 21When we came to the lodging place, we opened our sacks, and behold, each man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. We have brought it back in our hand. 22We have brought down other money in our hand to buy food. We don’t know who put our money in our sacks.” 23He said, “Peace be to you. Don’t be afraid. Your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks. I received your money.” He brought Simeon out to them. 24The man brought the men into Joseph’s house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet. He gave their donkeys fodder. 25They prepared the present for Joseph’s coming at noon, for they heard that they should eat bread there. 26When Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves down to him to the earth. 27He asked them of their welfare, and said, “Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he yet alive?” 28They said, “Your servant, our father, is well. He is still alive.” They bowed down humbly. 29He lifted up his eyes, and saw Benjamin, his brother, his mother’s son, and said, “Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me?” He said, “God be gracious to you, my son.” 30Joseph hurried, for his heart yearned over his brother; and he sought a place to weep. He entered into his room, and wept there. 31He washed his face, and came out. He controlled himself, and said, “Serve the meal.” 32They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians, that ate with him, by themselves, because the Egyptians don’t eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians. 33They sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth, and the men marveled one with another. 34He sent portions to them from before him, but Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. They drank, and were merry with him.

Zo gaven wij het hem te kennen, volgens diezelfde woorden; hebben wij juist geweten, dat hij zeggen zou: Brengt uw broeder af? 8Toen zeide Juda tot Israel, zijn vader: Zend den jongeling met mij, zo zullen wij ons opmaken en reizen, opdat wij leven en niet sterven, noch wij, noch gij, noch onze kinderkens. 9Ik zal borg voor hem zijn; van mijn hand zult gij hem eisen; indien ik hem tot u niet breng en hem voor uw aangezicht stel, zo zal ik alle dagen tegen u gezondigd hebben! 10Want hadden wij niet gezuimd, voorwaar, wij waren alreeds tweemaal wedergekomen. 11Toen zeide Israel, hun vader, tot hen: Is het nu alzo, zo doet dit; neemt van het loffelijkste dezes lands in uwe vaten, en brengt dien man een geschenk henen af: een weinig balsem, en een weinig honig, specerijen en mirre, terpentijnnoten en amandelen. 12En neemt dubbel geld in uw hand; en brengt het geld, hetwelk in den mond uwer zakken wedergekeerd is, weder in uw hand; misschien is het een feil. 13Neemt ook uw broeder mede, en maakt u op, keert weder tot dien man. 14En God, de Almachtige, geve u barmhartigheid voor het aangezicht van dien man, dat hij uw anderen broeder en Benjamin met u late gaan! En mij aangaande, als ik van kinderen beroofd ben, zo ben ik beroofd! 15En die mannen namen dat geschenk, en namen dubbel geld in hun hand, en Benjamin; en zij maakten zich op, en togen af naar Egypte, en zij stonden voor Jozefs aangezicht. 16Als Jozef Benjamin met hen zag, zo zeide hij tot dengene, die over zijn huis was: Breng deze mannen naar het huis toe, en slacht slachtvee, en maak het gereed; want deze mannen zullen te middag met mij eten. 17De man nu deed, gelijk Jozef gezegd had; en de man bracht deze mannen in het huis van Jozef. 18Toen vreesden deze mannen, omdat zij in het huis van Jozef gebracht werden, en zeiden: Ter oorzake van het geld, dat in het begin in onze zakken wedergekeerd is, worden wij ingebracht, opdat hij ons overrompele en ons overvalle, en ons tot slaven neme, met onze ezelen. 19Daarom naderden zij tot dien man, die over het huis van Jozef was, en zij spraken tot hem aan de deur van het huis. 20En zij zeiden: Och, mijn heer! wij waren in het begin gewisselijk afgekomen, om spijze te kopen. 21Het is nu geschied, als wij in de herberg gekomen waren, en wij onze zakken opendeden, zie, zo was ieders mans geld in den mond van zijn zak, ons geld in zijn gewicht; en wij hebben hetzelve wedergebracht in onze hand. 22Wij hebben ook ander geld in onze hand afgebracht, om spijze te kopen; wij weten niet, wie ons geld in onze zakken gelegd heeft. 23En hij zeide: Vrede zij ulieden, vreest niet! Uw God en de God uws vaders heeft u een schat in uw zakken gegeven; uw geld is tot mij gekomen. En hij bracht Simeon tot hen uit. 24Daarna bracht de man deze mannen in het huis van Jozef, en hij gaf water; en zij wiesen hun voeten; hij gaf ook aan hun ezelen voeder. 25En zij bereidden het geschenk, totdat Jozef kwam op den middag; want zij hadden gehoord, dat zij aldaar brood eten zouden. 26Als nu Jozef te huis gekomen was, zo brachten zij hem het geschenk, hetwelk in hun hand was, in het huis, en zij bogen zich voor hem ter aarde. 27En hij vraagde hun naar hun welstand, en zeide: Is het wel met uw vader, den oude, waarvan gij zeidet? Leeft hij nog? 28En zij zeiden: Het is wel met uw knecht, onzen vader, hij leeft nog; en zij neigden het hoofd en bogen zich neder. 29En hij hief zijn ogen op, en zag Benjamin, zijn broeder, den zoon zijner moeder, en zeide: Is dit uw kleinste broeder, waarvan gij tot mij zeidet? Daarna zeide hij: Mijn zoon! God zij u genadig! 30En Jozef haastte zich; want zijn ingewand ontstak jegens zijn broeder, en hij zocht te wenen; en hij ging in een kamer, en weende aldaar. 31Daarna wies hij zijn aangezicht en kwam uit; en hij bedwong zichzelven, en zeide: Zet brood op. 32En zij richtten voor hem aan in het bijzonder, en voor hen in het bijzonder; en voor de Egyptenaren, die met hem aten, in het bijzonder; want de Egyptenaars mogen geen brood eten met de Hebreen, dewijl zulks den Egyptenaren een gruwel is. 33En zij aten voor zijn aangezicht, de eerstgeborene naar zijn eerstgeboorte, en de jongere naar zijn jonkheid; dies verwonderden zich de mannen onder elkander. 34En hij langde hun van de gerechten, die voor hem waren; maar Benjamins gerecht was vijfmaal groter, dan de gerechten van hen allen. En zij dronken, en zij werden dronken met hem.
