1Joseph alla avertir Pharaon, et lui dit : Mes frères et mon père sont arrivés du pays de Canaan, avec leurs brebis et leurs bœufs, et tout ce qui leur appartient ; et les voici dans le pays de Gosen. 2Il prit cinq de ses frères, et les présenta à Pharaon. 3Pharaon leur dit : Quelle est votre occupation ? Ils répondirent à Pharaon : Tes serviteurs sont bergers , comme l’étaient nos pères. 4Ils dirent encore à Pharaon : Nous sommes venus pour séjourner dans le pays, parce qu’il n’y a plus de pâturage pour les brebis de tes serviteurs, car la famine s’appesantit sur le pays de Canaan ; permets donc à tes serviteurs d’habiter au pays de Gosen. 5Pharaon dit à Joseph : Ton père et tes frères sont venus auprès de toi. 6Le pays d’Égypte est devant toi ; établis ton père et tes frères dans la meilleure partie du pays. Qu’ils habitent dans le pays de Gosen ; et, si tu trouves parmi eux des hommes capables, mets-les à la tête de mes troupeaux. 7Joseph fit venir Jacob, son père, et le présenta à Pharaon. Et Jacob bénit Pharaon. 8Pharaon dit à Jacob : Quel est le nombre de jours des années de ta vie ? 9Jacob répondit à Pharaon : Les jours des années de mon pèlerinage sont de cent trente ans. Les jours des années de ma vie ont été peu nombreux et mauvais, et ils n’ont point atteint les jours des années de la vie de mes pères durant leur pèlerinage. 10Jacob bénit encore Pharaon, et se retira de devant Pharaon. 11Joseph établit son père et ses frères, et leur donna une propriété dans le pays d’Égypte, dans la meilleure partie du pays, dans la contrée de Ramsès, comme Pharaon l’avait ordonné. 12Joseph fournit du pain à son père et à ses frères, et à toute la famille de son père, selon le nombre des enfants. 13Il n’y avait plus de pain dans tout le pays, car la famine était très grande ; le pays d’Égypte et le pays de Canaan languissaient, à cause de la famine. 14Joseph recueillit tout l’argent qui se trouvait dans le pays d’Égypte et dans le pays de Canaan, contre le blé qu’on achetait ; et il fit entrer cet argent dans la maison de Pharaon. 15Quand l’argent du pays d’Égypte et du pays de Canaan fut épuisé, tous les Égyptiens vinrent à Joseph, en disant : Donne-nous du pain ! Pourquoi mourrions-nous en ta présence ? car l’argent manque. 16Joseph dit : Donnez vos troupeaux, et je vous donnerai du pain contre vos troupeaux, si l’argent manque. 17Ils amenèrent leurs troupeaux à Joseph, et Joseph leur donna du pain contre les chevaux, contre les troupeaux de brebis et de bœufs, et contre les ânes. Il leur fournit ainsi du pain cette année-là contre tous leurs troupeaux. 18Lorsque cette année fut écoulée, ils vinrent à Joseph l’année suivante, et lui dirent : Nous ne cacherons point à mon seigneur que l’argent est épuisé, et que les troupeaux de bétail ont été amenés à mon seigneur ; il ne reste devant mon seigneur que nos corps et nos terres. 19Pourquoi mourrions-nous sous tes yeux, nous et nos terres ? Achète-nous avec nos terres contre du pain, et nous appartiendrons à mon seigneur, nous et nos terres. Donne-nous de quoi semer, afin que nous vivions et que nous ne mourions pas, et que nos terres ne soient pas désolées. 20Joseph acheta toutes les terres de l’Égypte pour Pharaon ; car les Égyptiens vendirent chacun leur champ, parce que la famine les pressait. Et le pays devint la propriété de Pharaon. 21Il fit passer le peuple dans les villes, d’un bout à l’autre des frontières de l’Égypte. 22Seulement, il n’acheta point les terres des prêtres, parce qu’il y avait une loi de Pharaon en faveur des prêtres, qui vivaient du revenu que leur assurait Pharaon : c’est pourquoi ils ne vendirent point leurs terres. 23Joseph dit au peuple : Je vous ai achetés aujourd’hui avec vos terres, pour Pharaon ; voici pour vous de la semence, et vous pourrez ensemencer le sol. 24À la récolte, vous donnerez un cinquième à Pharaon, et vous aurez les quatre autres parties, pour ensemencer les champs, et pour vous nourrir avec vos enfants et ceux qui sont dans vos maisons. 25Ils dirent : Tu nous sauves la vie ! que nous trouvions grâce aux yeux de mon seigneur, et nous serons esclaves de Pharaon. 26Joseph fit de cela une loi, qui a subsisté jusqu’à ce jour, et d’après laquelle un cinquième du revenu des terres de l’Égypte appartient à Pharaon ; il n’y a que les terres des prêtres qui ne soient point à Pharaon. 27Israël habita dans le pays d’Égypte, dans le pays de Gosen. Ils eurent des possessions, ils furent féconds et multiplièrent beaucoup. 28Jacob vécut dix-sept ans dans le pays d’Égypte ; et les jours des années de la vie de Jacob furent de cent quarante-sept ans. 29Lorsqu’Israël approcha du moment de sa mort, il appela son fils Joseph, et lui dit : Si j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, mets, je te prie, ta main sous ma cuisse, et use envers moi de bonté et de fidélité : ne m’enterre pas en Égypte ! 30Quand je serai couché avec mes pères, tu me transporteras hors de l’Égypte, et tu m’enterreras dans leur sépulcre. Joseph répondit : Je ferai selon ta parole. 31Jacob dit : Jure-le-moi. Et Joseph le lui jura. Puis Israël se prosterna sur le chevet de son lit.
1Then Joseph went in and told Pharaoh, and said, “My father and my brothers, with their flocks, their herds, and all that they own, have come out of the land of Canaan; and behold, they are in the land of Goshen.” 2From among his brothers he took five men, and presented them to Pharaoh. 3Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What is your occupation?” They said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are shepherds, both we, and our fathers.” 4They said to Pharaoh, “We have come to live as foreigners in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants’ flocks. For the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.” 5Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, “Your father and your brothers have come to you. 6The land of Egypt is before you. Make your father and your brothers dwell in the best of the land. Let them dwell in the land of Goshen. If you know any able men among them, then put them in charge of my livestock.” 7Joseph brought in Jacob, his father, and set him before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. 8Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How many are the days of the years of your life?” 9Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The days of the years of my pilgrimage are one hundred thirty years. Few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.” 10Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from the presence of Pharaoh. 11Joseph placed his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded. 12Joseph nourished his father, his brothers, and all of his father’s household, with bread, according to their families. 13There was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very severe, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine. 14Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they bought: and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house. 15When the money was all spent in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph, and said, “Give us bread, for why should we die in your presence? For our money fails.” 16Joseph said, “Give me your livestock; and I will give you food for your livestock, if your money is gone.” 17They brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for the horses, and for the flocks, and for the herds, and for the donkeys: and he fed them with bread in exchange for all their livestock for that year. 18When that year was ended, they came to him the second year, and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord how our money is all spent, and the herds of livestock are my lord’s. There is nothing left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands. 19Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants to Pharaoh. Give us seed, that we may live, and not die, and that the land won’t be desolate.” 20So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for every man of the Egyptians sold his field, because the famine was severe on them, and the land became Pharaoh’s. 21As for the people, he moved them to the cities from one end of the border of Egypt even to the other end of it. 22Only he didn’t buy the land of the priests, for the priests had a portion from Pharaoh, and ate their portion which Pharaoh gave them. That is why they didn’t sell their land. 23Then Joseph said to the people, “Behold, I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh. Behold, here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land. 24It will happen at the harvests, that you shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and four parts will be your own, for seed of the field, for your food, for them of your households, and for food for your little ones.” 25They said, “You have saved our lives! Let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.” 26Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth. Only the land of the priests alone didn’t become Pharaoh’s. 27Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen; and they got themselves possessions therein, and were fruitful, and multiplied exceedingly. 28Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. So the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were one hundred forty-seven years. 29The time drew near that Israel must die, and he called his son Joseph, and said to him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please put your hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me. Please don’t bury me in Egypt, 30but when I sleep with my fathers, you shall carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burying place.” He said, “I will do as you have said.” 31He said, “Swear to me,” and he swore to him. Israel bowed himself on the bed’s head.
1Toen kwam Jozef en boodschapte Farao, en zeide: Mijn vader en mijn broeders, en hun schapen, en hun runderen, met alles wat zij hebben, zijn gekomen uit het land Kanaan, en zie, zij zijn in het land Gosen. 2En hij nam een deel zijner broederen, te weten vijf mannen, en hij stelde hen voor Farao's aangezicht. 3Toen zeide Farao tot zijn broederen: Wat is uw hantering? En zij zeiden tot Farao: Uw knechten zijn schaapherders, zo wij als onze vaders. 4Voorts zeiden zij tot Farao: Wij zijn gekomen, om als vreemdelingen in dit land te wonen; want er is geen weide voor de schapen, die uw knechten hebben, dewijl de honger zwaar is in het land Kanaan; en nu, laat toch uw knechten in het land Gosen wonen! 5Toen sprak Farao tot Jozef, zeggende: Uw vader en uw broeders zijn tot u gekomen; 6Egypteland is voor uw aangezicht; doe uw vader en uw broeders in het beste van het land wonen; laat hen in het land Gosen wonen, en zo gij weet, dat er onder hen kloeke mannen zijn, zo zet hen tot veemeesters over hetgeen ik heb. 7En Jozef bracht zijn vader Jakob mede, en stelde hem voor Farao's aangezicht; en Jakob zegende Farao. 8En Farao zeide tot Jakob: Hoe vele zijn de dagen der jaren uws levens! 9En Jakob zeide tot Farao: De dagen der jaren mijner vreemdelingschappen zijn honderd en dertig jaren; weinig en kwaad zijn de dagen der jaren mijns levens geweest, en hebben niet bereikt de dagen van de jaren des levens mijner vaderen, in de dagen hunner vreemdelingschappen. 10En Jakob zegende Farao, en ging uit van Farao's aangezicht. 11En Jozef bestelde voor Jakob en zijn broederen woningen, en hij gaf hun een bezitting in Egypteland, in het beste van het land, in het land Rameses, gelijk als Farao geboden had. 12En Jozef onderhield zijn vader, en zijn broeders, en het ganse huis zijns vaders, met brood, tot den mond der kinderkens toe. 13En er was geen brood in het ganse land; want de honger was zeer zwaar: zodat het land van Egypte en het land Kanaan raasden vanwege dien honger. 14Toen verzamelde Jozef al het geld, dat in Egypteland en in het land Kanaan gevonden werd, voor het koren, dat zij kochten; en Jozef bracht dat geld in Farao's huis. 15Als nu het geld uit Egypteland en uit het land Kanaan verdaan was, kwamen al de Egyptenaars tot Jozef, zeggende: Geef ons brood; want waarom zouden wij in uw tegenwoordigheid sterven? want het geld ontbreekt; 16En Jozef zeide: Geeft uw vee, zo zal ik het u geven voor uw vee, indien het geld ontbreekt. 17Toen brachten zij hun vee tot Jozef; en Jozef gaf hun brood voor paarden en voor het vee der schapen, en voor het vee der runderen, en voor ezels; en hij voedde hen met brood, datzelve jaar, voor al hun vee. 18Toen datzelve jaar voleind was, zo kwamen zij tot hem in het tweede jaar, en zeiden tot hem: Wij zullen het voor mijn heer niet verbergen, alzo het geld verdaan is, en de bezitting der beesten gekomen aan mijn heer, zo is er niets anders overgebleven voor het aangezichts mijns heren, dan ons lichaam en ons land. 19Waarom zullen wij voor uw ogen sterven, zo wij als ons land? Koop ons en ons land voor brood; zo zullen wij en ons land Farao dienstbaar zijn; en geef zaad, opdat wij leven en niet sterven, en het land niet woest worde! 20Alzo kocht Jozef het gehele land van Egypte voor Farao; want de Egyptenaars verkochten een ieder zijn akker, dewijl de honger sterk over hen geworden was; zo werd het land Farao's eigen. 21En aangaande het volk, dat zette hij over in de steden, van het ene uiterste der palen van Egypte, tot aan het andere uiterste deszelven. 22Alleen het land der priesteren kocht hij niet, want de priesters hadden een bescheiden deel van Farao, en zij aten hun bescheiden deel, hetwelk hun Farao gegeven had; daarom verkochten zij hun land niet. 23Toen zeide Jozef tot het volk: Ziet, ik heb heden u en uw land gekocht voor Farao; ziet, daar is zaad voor u, opdat gij het land bezaait. 24Doch met de inkomsten zal het geschieden, dat gij aan Farao het vijfde deel zult geven, en de vier delen zullen voor u zijn, tot zaad des velds, en tot uw spijze en van degenen, die in uw huizen zijn, en om te eten voor uw kinderkens. 25En zij zeiden: Gij hebt ons leven behouden; laat ons genade vinden in de ogen mijns heren, en wij zullen Farao's knechten zijn. 26Jozef dan stelde ditzelve in tot een wet, tot dezen dag, over het land van Egypte, dat Farao het vijfde deel zou hebben; behalve dat alleen het land der priesteren van Farao niet werd. 27Zo woonde Israel in het land van Egypte, in het land Gosen; en zij stelden zich tot bezitters daarin, en zij werden vruchtbaar en vermeerderden zeer. 28En Jakob leefde in het land van Egypte zeventien jaar; zodat de dagen van Jakob, de jaren zijns levens, geweest zijn honderd zeven en veertig jaren. 29Als nu de dagen van Israel naderden, dat hij sterven zou, zo riep hij zijn zoon Jozef, en zeide tot hem: Indien ik nu genade gevonden heb in uw ogen, zo leg toch uw hand onder mijn heup, en doe weldadigheid en trouw aan mij, en begraaf mij toch niet in Egypte; 30Maar dat ik bij mijn vaderen ligge; hierom zult gij mij uit Egypte voeren, en mij in hun graf begraven. En hij zeide: Ik zal doen naar uw woord! 31En hij zeide: Zweer mij! en hij zwoer hem. En Israel boog zich ten hoofde van het bed.
