1Jacob poursuivit son chemin ; et des anges de Dieu le rencontrèrent. 2En les voyant, Jacob dit : C’est le camp de Dieu ! Et il donna à ce lieu le nom de Mahanaïm. 3Jacob envoya devant lui des messagers à Ésaü, son frère, au pays de Séir, dans le territoire d’Édom. 4Il leur donna cet ordre : Voici ce que vous direz à mon seigneur Ésaü : Ainsi parle ton serviteur Jacob : J’ai séjourné chez Laban, et j’y suis resté jusqu’à présent ; 5j’ai des bœufs, des ânes, des brebis, des serviteurs et des servantes, et j’envoie l’annoncer à mon seigneur, pour trouver grâce à tes yeux. 6Les messagers revinrent auprès de Jacob, en disant : Nous sommes allés vers ton frère Ésaü ; et il marche à ta rencontre, avec quatre cents hommes. 7Jacob fut très effrayé, et saisi d’angoisse. Il partagea en deux camps les gens qui étaient avec lui, les brebis, les bœufs et les chameaux ; 8et il dit : Si Ésaü vient contre l’un des camps et le bat, le camp qui restera pourra se sauver. 9Jacob dit : Dieu de mon père Abraham, Dieu de mon père Isaac, Éternel, qui m’as dit : Retourne dans ton pays et dans ton lieu de naissance, et je te ferai du bien ! 10Je suis trop petit pour toutes les grâces et pour toute la fidélité dont tu as usé envers ton serviteur ; car j’ai passé ce Jourdain avec mon bâton, et maintenant je forme deux camps. 11Délivre-moi, je te prie, de la main de mon frère, de la main d’Ésaü ! car je crains qu’il ne vienne , et qu’il ne me frappe, avec la mère et les enfants. 12Et toi, tu as dit : Je te ferai du bien, et je rendrai ta postérité comme le sable de la mer, si abondant qu’on ne saurait le compter. 13C’est dans ce lieu-là que Jacob passa la nuit. Il prit de ce qu’il avait sous la main, pour faire un présent à Ésaü, son frère : 14deux cents chèvres et vingt boucs, deux cents brebis et vingt béliers, 15trente femelles de chameaux avec leurs petits qu’elles allaitaient, quarante vaches et dix taureaux, vingt ânesses et dix ânes. 16Il les remit à ses serviteurs, troupeau par troupeau séparément, et il dit à ses serviteurs : Passez devant moi, et mettez un intervalle entre chaque troupeau. 17Il donna cet ordre au premier : Quand Ésaü, mon frère, te rencontrera, et te demandera : À qui es-tu ? où vas-tu ? et à qui appartient ce troupeau devant toi ? 18tu répondras : À ton serviteur Jacob ; c’est un présent envoyé à mon seigneur Ésaü ; et voici, il vient lui-même derrière nous. 19Il donna le même ordre au second, au troisième, et à tous ceux qui suivaient les troupeaux : C’est ainsi que vous parlerez à mon seigneur Ésaü, quand vous le rencontrerez. 20Vous direz : Voici, ton serviteur Jacob vient aussi derrière nous. Car il se disait : Je l’apaiserai par ce présent qui va devant moi ; ensuite je le verrai en face, et peut-être m’accueillera-t-il favorablement. 21Le présent passa devant lui ; et il resta cette nuit-là dans le camp. 22Il se leva la même nuit, prit ses deux femmes, ses deux servantes, et ses onze enfants, et passa le gué de Jabbok. 23Il les prit, leur fit passer le torrent, et le fit passer à tout ce qui lui appartenait. 24Jacob demeura seul. Alors un homme lutta avec lui jusqu’au lever de l’aurore. 25Voyant qu’il ne pouvait le vaincre, cet homme le frappa à l’emboîture de la hanche ; et l’emboîture de la hanche de Jacob se démit pendant qu’il luttait avec lui. 26Il dit : Laisse-moi aller, car l’aurore se lève. Et Jacob répondit : Je ne te laisserai point aller, que tu ne m’aies béni. 27Il lui dit : Quel est ton nom ? Et il répondit : Jacob. 28Il dit encore : ton nom ne sera plus Jacob, mais tu seras appelé Israël ; car tu as lutté avec Dieu et avec des hommes, et tu as été vainqueur. 29Jacob l’interrogea, en disant : Fais-moi je te prie, connaître ton nom. Il répondit : Pourquoi demandes-tu mon nom ? Et il le bénit là. 30Jacob appela ce lieu du nom de Peniel : car, dit-il, j’ai vu Dieu face à face, et mon âme a été sauvée. 31Le soleil se levait, lorsqu’il passa Peniel. Jacob boitait de la hanche. 32C’est pourquoi jusqu’à ce jour, les enfants d’Israël ne mangent point le tendon qui est à l’emboîture de la hanche ; car Dieu frappa Jacob à l’emboîture de la hanche, au tendon .
1Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. 2When he saw them, Jacob said, “This is God’s army.” He called the name of that place Mahanaim. 3Jacob sent messengers in front of him to Esau, his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom. 4He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: ‘This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now. 5I have cattle, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.’” 6The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau. Not only that, but he comes to meet you, and four hundred men with him.” 7Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed. He divided the people who were with him, and the flocks, and the herds, and the camels, into two companies; 8and he said, “If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape.” 9Jacob said, “God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh, who said to me, ‘Return to your country, and to your relatives, and I will do you good,’ 10I am not worthy of the least of all the loving kindnesses, and of all the truth, which you have shown to your servant; for with just my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I have become two companies. 11Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he come and strike me, and the mothers with the children. 12You said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your seed as the sand of the sea, which can’t be numbered because there are so many.’” 13He lodged there that night, and took from that which he had with him, a present for Esau, his brother: 14two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, 15thirty milk camels and their colts, forty cows, ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals. 16He delivered them into the hands of his servants, every herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put a space between herd and herd.” 17He commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?’ 18Then you shall say, ‘They are your servant, Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Behold, he also is behind us.’” 19He commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the herds, saying, “This is how you shall speak to Esau, when you find him. 20You shall say, ‘Not only that, but behold, your servant, Jacob, is behind us.’” For, he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.” 21So the present passed over before him, and he himself lodged that night in the camp. 22He rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two handmaids, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford of the Jabbok. 23He took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had. 24Jacob was left alone, and wrestled with a man there until the breaking of the day. 25When he saw that he didn’t prevail against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was strained, as he wrestled. 26The man said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.” Jacob said, “I won’t let you go, unless you bless me.” 27He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob”. 28He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.” 29Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” He said, “Why is it that you ask what my name is?” He blessed him there. 30Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for, he said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” 31The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh. 32Therefore the children of Israel don’t eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.

Die tot mij gezegd hebt: Keer weder tot uw land, en tot uw maagschap, en Ik zal wel bij u doen! 10Ik ben geringer dan al deze weldadigheden, en dan al deze trouw, die Gij aan Uw knecht gedaan hebt; want ik ben met mijn staf over deze Jordaan gegaan, en nu ben ik tot twee heiren geworden! 11Ruk mij toch uit mijns broeders hand, uit Ezau's hand; want ik vreze hem, dat hij niet misschien kome, en mij sla, de moeder met de zonen! 12Gij hebt immers gezegd: Ik zal gewisselijk bij u weldoen, en Ik zal uw zaad stellen als het zand der zee, dat vanwege de menigte niet geteld kan worden! 13En hij vernachtte aldaar dienzelfden nacht; en hij nam van hetgeen, dat hem in zijn hand kwam, een geschenk voor Ezau zijn broeder; 14Tweehonderd geiten en twintig bokken, tweehonderd ooien en twintig rammen; 15Dertig zogende kemelinnen met haar veulens, veertig koeien en tien varren, twintig ezelinnen en tien jonge ezels. 16En hij gaf die in de hand zijner knechten, elke kudde bijzonder; en hij zeide tot zijn knechten: Gaat gijlieden door, voor mijn aangezicht, en stelt ruimte tussen kudde en tussen kudde. 17En hij gebood de eerste, zeggende: Wanneer Ezau, mijn broeder, u ontmoeten zal, en u vragen, zeggende: Wiens zijt gij? en waarheen gaat gij? en wiens zijn deze voor uw aangezicht? 18Zo zult gij zeggen: Dat is een geschenk van uw knecht Jakob, gezonden tot mijn heer, tot Ezau, en zie, hij zelf is ook achter ons! 19En hij gebood ook den tweede, ook den derde, ook allen, die de kudden nagingen, zeggende: Naar ditzelfde woord zult gij spreken tot Ezau, als gij hem vinden zult. 20En gij zult ook zeggen: Zie, uw knecht Jakob is achter ons! Want hij zeide: Ik zal zijn aangezicht verzoenen met dit geschenk, dat voor mijn aangezicht gaat, en daarna zal ik zijn aangezicht zien; misschien zal hij mijn aangezicht aannemen. 21Alzo ging dat geschenk heen voor zijn aangezicht; doch hijzelf vernachtte dienzelfden nacht in het leger. 22En hij stond op in dienzelfden nacht, en hij nam zijn twee vrouwen, en zijn twee dienstmaagden, en zijn elf kinderen, en hij toog over het veer van de Jabbok. 23En hij nam ze, en deed hen over die beek trekken; en hij deed overtrekken hetgeen hij had. 24Doch Jakob bleef alleen over; en een man worstelde met hem, totdat de dageraad opging. 25En toen Hij zag, dat Hij hem niet overmocht, roerde Hij het gewricht zijner heup aan, zodat het gewricht van Jakobs heup verwrongen werd, als Hij met hem worstelde. 26En Hij zeide: Laat Mij gaan, want de dageraad is opgegaan. Maar hij zeide: Ik zal U niet laten gaan, tenzij dat Gij mij zegent. 27En Hij zeide tot hem: Hoe is uw naam? En hij zeide: Jakob. 28Toen zeide Hij: Uw naam zal voortaan niet Jakob heten, maar Israel; want gij hebt u vorstelijk gedragen met God en met de mensen, en hebt overmocht. 29En Jakob vraagde, en zeide: Geef toch Uw naam te kennen. En Hij zeide: Waarom is het, dat gij naar Mijn naam vraagt? En Hij zegende hem aldaar. 30En Jakob noemde den naam dier plaats Pniel: Want, zeide hij, ik heb God gezien van aangezicht tot aangezicht, en mijn ziel is gered geweest. 31En de zon rees hem op, als hij door Pniel gegaan was; en hij was hinkende aan zijn heup. 32Daarom eten de kinderen Israels de verrukte zenuw niet, die op het gewricht der heup is, tot op dezen dag, omdat Hij het gewricht van Jakobs heup aangeroerd had, aan de verrukte zenuw.
