1Après ces choses, il arriva que l’échanson et le panetier du roi d’Égypte, offensèrent leur maître, le roi d’Égypte. 2Pharaon fut irrité contre ses deux officiers, le chef des échansons et le chef des panetiers. 3Et il les fit mettre dans la maison du chef des gardes, dans la prison , dans le lieu où Joseph était enfermé. 4Le chef des gardes les plaça sous la surveillance de Joseph, qui faisait le service auprès d’eux ; et ils passèrent un certain temps en prison. 5Pendant une même nuit, l’échanson et le panetier du roi d’Égypte, qui étaient enfermés dans la prison , eurent tous les deux un songe, chacun le sien , pouvant recevoir une explication distincte. 6Joseph, étant venu le matin vers eux, les regarda ; et voici, ils étaient tristes. 7Alors il questionna les officiers de Pharaon, qui étaient avec lui dans la prison de son maître, et il leur dit : Pourquoi avez-vous mauvais visage aujourd’hui ? 8Ils lui répondirent : Nous avons eu un songe, et il n’y a personne pour l’expliquer. Joseph leur dit : N’est-ce pas à Dieu qu’appartiennent les explications ? Racontez-moi donc votre songe. 9Le chef des échansons raconta son songe à Joseph, et lui dit : Dans mon songe, voici, il y avait un cep devant moi. 10Ce cep avait trois sarments. Quand il eut poussé, sa fleur se développa et ses grappes donnèrent des raisins mûrs. 11La coupe de Pharaon était dans ma main. Je pris les raisins, je les pressai dans la coupe de Pharaon, et je mis la coupe dans la main de Pharaon. 12Joseph lui dit : En voici l’explication. Les trois sarments sont trois jours. 13Encore trois jours, et Pharaon relèvera ta tête et te rétablira dans ta charge ; tu mettras la coupe dans la main de Pharaon, comme tu en avais l’habitude lorsque tu étais son échanson. 14Mais souviens-toi de moi, quand tu seras heureux, et montre, je te prie, de la bonté à mon égard ; parle en ma faveur à Pharaon, et fais-moi sortir de cette maison. 15Car j’ai été enlevé du pays des Hébreux, et ici même je n’ai rien fait pour être mis en prison. 16Le chef des panetiers, voyant que Joseph avait donné une explication favorable, dit : Voici, il y avait aussi, dans mon songe, trois corbeilles de pain blanc sur ma tête. 17Dans la corbeille la plus élevée il y avait pour Pharaon des mets de toute espèce, cuits au four ; et les oiseaux les mangeaient dans la corbeille au-dessus de ma tête. 18Joseph répondit, et dit : En voici l’explication. Les trois corbeilles sont trois jours. 19Encore trois jours, et Pharaon enlèvera ta tête de dessus toi, te fera pendre à un bois, et les oiseaux mangeront ta chair. 20Le troisième jour, jour de la naissance de Pharaon, il fit un festin à tous ses serviteurs ; et il éleva la tête du chef des échansons et la tête du chef des panetiers, au milieu de ses serviteurs : 21il rétablit le chef des échansons dans sa charge d’échanson, pour qu’il mît la coupe dans la main de Pharaon ; 22mais il fit pendre le chef des panetiers, selon l’explication que Joseph leur avait donnée. 23Le chef des échansons ne pensa plus à Joseph. Il l’oublia.
1After these things, the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker offended their lord, the king of Egypt. 2Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief cup bearer and the chief baker. 3He put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound. 4The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he took care of them. They stayed in prison many days. 5They both dreamed a dream, each man his dream, in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the cup bearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were bound in the prison. 6Joseph came in to them in the morning, and saw them, and saw that they were sad. 7He asked Pharaoh’s officers who were with him in custody in his master’s house, saying, “Why do you look so sad today?” 8They said to him, “We have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it.” Joseph said to them, “Don’t interpretations belong to God? Please tell it to me.” 9The chief cup bearer told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, “In my dream, behold, a vine was in front of me, 10and in the vine were three branches. It was as though it budded, it blossomed, and its clusters produced ripe grapes. 11Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.” 12Joseph said to him, “This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days. 13Within three more days, Pharaoh will lift up your head, and restore you to your office. You will give Pharaoh’s cup into his hand, the way you did when you were his cup bearer. 14But remember me when it will be well with you, and please show kindness to me, and make mention of me to Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house. 15For indeed, I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews, and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.” 16When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, “I also was in my dream, and behold, three baskets of white bread were on my head. 17In the uppermost basket there were all kinds of baked food for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head.” 18Joseph answered, “This is its interpretation. The three baskets are three days. 19Within three more days, Pharaoh will lift up your head from off you, and will hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from off you.” 20On the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, he made a feast for all his servants, and he lifted up the head of the chief cup bearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants. 21He restored the chief cup bearer to his position again, and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand; 22but he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them. 23Yet the chief cup bearer didn’t remember Joseph, but forgot him.

En Jozef zeide tot hen: Zijn de uitleggingen niet van God? Vertelt ze mij toch. 9Toen vertelde de overste der schenkers Jozef zijn droom, en zeide tot hem: In mijn droom, zie, zo was een wijnstok voor mijn aangezicht; 10En aan den wijnstok waren drie ranken; en hij was als bottende, zijn bloeisel ging op, zijn trossen brachten rijpe druiven voort. 11En Farao's beker was in mijn hand; en ik nam die druiven, en drukte ze uit in Farao's beker, en ik gaf den beker op Farao's hand. 12Toen zeide Jozef tot hem: Dit is zijn uitlegging: de drie ranken zijn drie dagen. 13Binnen nog drie dagen zal Farao uw hoofd verheffen, en zal u in uw staat herstellen; en gij zult Farao's beker in zijn hand geven, naar de vorige wijze, toen gij zijn schenker waart. 14Doch gedenk mijner bij uzelven, wanneer het u wel gaan zal, en doe toch weldadigheid aan mij, en doe van mij melding bij Farao, en maak, dat ik uit dit huis kome. 15Want ik ben diefelijk ontstolen uit het land der Hebreen; en ook heb ik hier niets gedaan, dat zij mij in dezen kuil gezet hebben. 16Toen de overste der bakkers zag, dat hij een goede uitlegging gedaan had, zo zeide hij tot Jozef: Ik was ook in mijn droom, en zie, drie getraliede korven waren op mijn hoofd. 17En in den opperste korf was van alle spijze van Farao, die bakkerswerk is; en het gevogelte at dezelve uit de korf, van boven mijn hoofd. 18Toen antwoordde Jozef, en zeide: Dit is zijn uitlegging: de drie korven zijn drie dagen. 19Binnen nog drie dagen zal Farao uw hoofd verheffen van boven u, en hij zal u aan een hout hangen, en het gevogelte zal uw vlees van boven u eten. 20En het geschiedde op den derden dag, den dag van Farao's geboorte, dat hij voor al zijn knechten een maaltijd maakte; en hij verhief het hoofd van den overste der schenkers, en het hoofd van den overste der bakkers, in het midden zijner knechten. 21En hij deed den overste der schenkers wederkeren tot zijn schenkambt, zodat hij den beker op Farao's hand gaf. 22Maar den overste der bakkers hing hij op; gelijk Jozef hun uitgelegd had. 23Doch de overste der schenkers gedacht aan Jozef niet, maar vergat hem.
