1La colère de l’Éternel s’enflamma de nouveau contre Israël, et il excita David contre eux, en disant : Va, fais le dénombrement d’Israël et de Juda. 2Et le roi dit à Joab, qui était chef de l’armée et qui se trouvait près de lui : Parcours toutes les tribus d’Israël, depuis Dan jusqu’à Beer-Schéba ; qu’on fasse le dénombrement du peuple, et que je sache à combien il s’élève. 3Joab dit au roi : Que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, rende le peuple cent fois plus nombreux, et que les yeux du roi mon seigneur le voient ! Mais pourquoi le roi mon seigneur veut-il faire cela ? 4Le roi persista dans l’ordre qu’il donnait à Joab et aux chefs de l’armée ; et Joab et les chefs de l’armée quittèrent le roi pour faire le dénombrement du peuple d’Israël. 5Ils passèrent le Jourdain, et ils campèrent à Aroër, à droite de la ville qui est au milieu de la vallée de Gad, et près de Jaezer. 6Ils allèrent en Galaad et dans le pays de Thachthim-Hodschi. Ils allèrent à Dan-Jaan, et aux environs de Sidon. 7Ils allèrent à la forteresse de Tyr, et dans toutes les villes des Héviens et des Cananéens. Ils terminèrent par le midi de Juda, à Beer-Schéba. 8Ils parcoururent ainsi tout le pays, et ils arrivèrent à Jérusalem au bout de neuf mois et vingt jours. 9Joab remit au roi le rôle du dénombrement du peuple : il y avait en Israël huit cent mille hommes de guerre tirant l’épée, et en Juda cinq cent mille hommes. 10David sentit battre son cœur, après qu’il eut ainsi fait le dénombrement du peuple. Et il dit à l’Éternel : J’ai commis un grand péché en faisant cela ! Maintenant, ô Éternel, daigne pardonner l’iniquité de ton serviteur, car j’ai complètement agi en insensé ! 11Le lendemain, quand David se leva, la parole de l’Éternel fut ainsi adressée à Gad le prophète, le voyant de David : 12Va dire à David : Ainsi parle l’Éternel : Je te propose trois fléaux ; choisis-en un, et je t’en frapperai. 13Gad alla vers David, et lui fit connaître la chose, en disant : Veux-tu sept années de famine dans ton pays, ou bien trois mois de fuite devant tes ennemis qui te poursuivront, ou bien trois jours de peste dans ton pays ? Maintenant choisis, et vois ce que je dois répondre à celui qui m’envoie. 14David répondit à Gad : Je suis dans une grande angoisse ! Oh ! tombons entre les mains de l’Éternel, car ses compassions sont immenses ; mais que je ne tombe pas entre les mains des hommes ! 15L’Éternel envoya la peste en Israël, depuis le matin jusqu’au temps fixé ; et, de Dan à Beer-Schéba, il mourut soixante-dix mille hommes parmi le peuple. 16Comme l’ange étendait la main sur Jérusalem pour la détruire, l’Éternel se repentit de ce mal, et il dit à l’ange qui faisait périr le peuple : Assez ! Retire maintenant ta main. L’ange de l’Éternel était près de l’aire d’Aravna, le Jébusien. 17David, voyant l’ange qui frappait parmi le peuple, dit à l’Éternel : Voici, j’ai péché ! C’est moi qui suis coupable ; mais ces brebis, qu’ont-elles fait ? Que ta main soit donc sur moi et sur la maison de mon père ! 18Ce jour-là, Gad vint auprès de David, et lui dit : Monte, élève un autel à l’Éternel dans l’aire d’Aravna, le Jébusien. 19David monta, selon la parole de Gad, comme l’Éternel l’avait ordonné. 20Aravna regarda, et il vit le roi et ses serviteurs qui se dirigeaient vers lui ; et Aravna sortit, et se prosterna devant le roi, le visage contre terre. 21Aravna dit : Pourquoi mon seigneur le roi vient-il vers son serviteur ? Et David répondit : Pour acheter de toi l’aire et pour y bâtir un autel à l’Éternel, afin que la plaie se retire de dessus le peuple. 22Aravna dit à David : Que mon seigneur le roi prenne l’aire, et qu’il y offre les sacrifices qu’il lui plaira ; vois, les bœufs seront pour l’holocauste, et les chars avec l’attelage serviront de bois. 23Aravna donna le tout au roi. Et Aravna dit au roi : Que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te soit favorable ! 24Mais le roi dit à Aravna : Non ! Je veux l’acheter de toi à prix d’argent, et je n’offrirai point à l’Éternel, mon Dieu, des holocaustes qui ne me coûtent rien. Et David acheta l’aire et les bœufs pour cinquante sicles d’argent. 25David bâtit là un autel à l’Éternel, et il offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices d’actions de grâces. Alors l’Éternel fut apaisé envers le pays, et la plaie se retira d’Israël.
1Again Yahweh’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, “Go, number Israel and Judah.” 2The king said to Joab the captain of the army, who was with him, “Now go back and forth through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and number the people, that I may know the sum of the people.” 3Joab said to the king, “Now may Yahweh your God add to the people, however many they may be, one hundred times; and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king delight in this thing?” 4Notwithstanding, the king’s word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the army. Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel. 5They passed over the Jordan, and encamped in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the valley of Gad, and to Jazer: 6then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim Hodshi; and they came to Dan Jaan, and around to Sidon, 7and came to the stronghold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites; and they went out to the south of Judah, at Beersheba. 8So when they had gone back and forth through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. 9Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people to the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men. 10David’s heart struck him after that he had numbered the people. David said to Yahweh, “I have sinned greatly in that which I have done. But now, Yahweh, put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant; for I have done very foolishly.” 11When David rose up in the morning, Yahweh’s word came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying, 12“Go and speak to David, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’” 13So Gad came to David, and told him, and said to him, “Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee three months before your foes while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ pestilence in your land? Now answer, and consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.” 14David said to Gad, “I am in distress. Let us fall now into the hand of Yahweh; for his mercies are great. Let me not fall into the hand of man.” 15So Yahweh sent a pestilence on Israel from the morning even to the appointed time; and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men. 16When the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, Yahweh relented of the disaster, and said to the angel who destroyed the people, “It is enough. Now stay your hand.” Yahweh’s angel was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. 17David spoke to Yahweh when he saw the angel who struck the people, and said, “Behold, I have sinned, and I have done perversely; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand be against me, and against my father’s house.” 18Gad came that day to David, and said to him, “Go up, build an altar to Yahweh on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.” 19David went up according to the saying of Gad, as Yahweh commanded. 20Araunah looked out, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him. Then Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground. 21Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” David said, “To buy your threshing floor, to build an altar to Yahweh, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.” 22Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him. Behold, the cattle for the burnt offering, and the threshing instruments and the yokes of the oxen for the wood: 23all this, king, does Araunah give to the king.” Araunah said to the king, “May Yahweh your God accept you.” 24The king said to Araunah, “No; but I will most certainly buy it from you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to Yahweh my God which cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. 25David built an altar to Yahweh there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So Yahweh was entreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
1En de toorn des HEEREN voer voort te ontsteken tegen Israel; en Hij porde David aan tegen henlieden, zeggende: Ga, tel Israel en Juda. 2De koning dan zeide tot Joab, den krijgsoverste, die bij hem was: Trek nu om, door alle stammen van Israel, van Dan tot Ber-seba toe, en tel het volk, opdat ik het getal des volks wete. 3Toen zeide Joab tot den koning: Nu doe de HEERE, uw God, tot dit volk, zoals deze en die nu zijn, honderdmaal meer, dat de ogen van mijn heer den koning het aanzien; maar waarom heeft mijn heer de koning lust tot deze zaak? 4Doch des konings woord nam de overhand tegen Joab, en tegen de oversten des heirs. Alzo toog Joab uit, met de oversten des heirs, van des konings aangezicht, om het volk Israel te tellen. 5En zij gingen over de Jordaan, en legerden zich bij Aroer, ter rechterhand der stad, die in het midden is van de beek van Gad, en aan Jaezer. 6Voorts kwamen zij in Gilead, en in het lage land Hodsi; ook kwamen zij tot Dan-Jaan, en rondom bij Sidon. 7En zij kwamen tot de vesting van Tyrus, en alle steden der Hevieten en der Kanaanieten; en zij kwamen uit aan het zuiden van Juda te Ber-seba. 8Alzo togen zij om door het ganse land; en ten einde van negen maanden en twintig dagen kwamen zij te Jeruzalem. 9En Joab gaf de som van het getelde volk aan den koning; en in Israel waren achthonderd duizend strijdbare mannen, die het zwaard uittrokken, en de mannen van Juda waren vijfhonderd duizend man. 10En Davids hart sloeg hem, nadat hij het volk geteld had; en David zeide tot den HEERE: Ik heb zeer gezondigd in hetgeen ik gedaan heb; maar nu, o HEERE, neem toch de misdaad Uws knechts weg, want ik heb zeer zottelijk gedaan. 11Als nu David des morgens opstond, zo geschiedde het woord des HEEREN tot den profeet Gad, Davids ziener, zeggende: 12Ga heen, en spreek tot David: Alzo zegt de HEERE: Drie dingen draag Ik u voor; verkies u een uit die, dat Ik u doe. 13Zo kwam Gad tot David, en maakte het hem bekend, en zeide tot hem: Zal u een honger van zeven jaren in uw land komen? Of wilt gij drie maanden vlieden voor het aangezicht uwer vijanden, dat die u vervolgen? Of dat er drie dagen pestilentie in uw land zij? Merk nu, en zie toe, wat antwoord ik Dien zal wederbrengen, Die mij gezonden heeft. 14Toen zeide David tot Gad: Mij is zeer bange; laat ons toch in de hand des HEEREN vallen, want Zijn barmhartigheden zijn vele, maar laat mij in de hand van mensen niet vallen. 15Toen gaf de HEERE een pestilentie in Israel, van den morgen af tot den gezetten tijd toe; en er stierven van het volk, van Dan tot Ber-seba toe, zeventig duizend mannen. 16Toen nu de engel zijn hand uitstrekte over Jeruzalem, om haar te verderven, berouwde het den HEERE over dat kwaad, en Hij zeide tot den engel, die het verderf onder het volk maakte: Het is genoeg, trek uw hand nu af. De engel des HEEREN nu was bij den dorsvloer van Arauna, den Jebusiet. 17En David, als hij den engel zag, die het volk sloeg, sprak tot den HEERE, en zeide: Zie ik, ik heb gezondigd, en ik, ik heb onrecht gehandeld, maar wat hebben deze schapen gedaan? Uw hand zij toch tegen mij en tegen mijns vaders huis. 18En Gad kwam tot David op dienzelfden dag, en zeide tot hem: Ga op, richt den HEERE een altaar op, op den dorsvloer van Arauna, den Jebusiet. 19Alzo ging David op naar het woord van Gad, gelijk als de HEERE geboden had. 20En Arauna zag toe, en zag den koning en zijn knechten tot zich overkomen; zo ging Arauna uit, en boog zich voor den koning met zijn aangezicht ter aarde. 21En Arauna zeide: Waarom komt mijn heer de koning tot zijn knecht? En David zeide: Om dezen dorsvloer van u te kopen, om den HEERE een altaar te bouwen, opdat deze plage opgehouden worde van over het volk. 22Toen zeide Arauna tot David: Mijn heer de koning neme en offere, wat goed is in zijn ogen; zie, daar de runderen ten brandoffer, en de sleden en het rundertuig tot hout. 23Dit alles gaf Arauna, de koning, aan den koning. Voorts zeide Arauna tot den koning: De HEERE uw God neme een welgevallen in u! 24Doch de koning zeide tot Arauna: Neen, maar ik zal het zekerlijk van u kopen voor den prijs; want ik zal den HEERE, mijn God, niet offeren brandofferen om niet. Alzo kocht David den dorsvloer en de runderen voor vijftig zilveren sikkelen. 25En David bouwde aldaar den HEERE een altaar, en offerde brandofferen en dankofferen. Alzo werd de HEERE den lande verbeden, en deze plage van over Israel opgehouden.
