1Après cela, le roi des fils d’Ammon mourut, et Hanun, son fils, régna à sa place. 2David dit : Je montrerai de la bienveillance à Hanun, fils de Nachasch, comme son père en a montré à mon égard. Et David envoya ses serviteurs pour le consoler au sujet de son père. Lorsque les serviteurs de David arrivèrent dans le pays des fils d’Ammon, 3les chefs des fils d’Ammon dirent à Hanun, leur maître : Penses-tu que ce soit pour honorer ton père que David t’envoie des consolateurs ? N’est-ce pas pour reconnaître et explorer la ville, et pour la détruire, qu’il envoie ses serviteurs auprès de toi ? 4Alors Hanun saisit les serviteurs de David, leur fit raser la moitié de la barbe, et fit couper leurs habits par le milieu jusqu’au haut des cuisses. Puis il les congédia. 5David, qui fut informé, envoya des gens à leur rencontre, car ces hommes étaient dans une grande confusion ; et le roi leur fit dire : Restez à Jéricho jusqu’à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé, et revenez ensuite. 6Les fils d’Ammon, voyant qu’ils s’étaient rendus odieux à David, firent enrôler à leur solde vingt mille hommes de pied chez les Syriens de Beth-Rehob et chez les Syriens de Tsoba, mille hommes chez le roi de Maaca, et douze mille hommes chez les gens de Tob. 7À cette nouvelle, David envoya contre eux Joab et toute l’armée, les hommes vaillants. 8Les fils d’Ammon sortirent, et se rangèrent en bataille à l’entrée de la porte ; les Syriens de Tsoba et de Rehob, et les hommes de Tob et de Maaca, étaient à part dans la campagne. 9Joab vit qu’il avait à combattre par devant et par derrière. Il choisit alors sur toute l’élite d’Israël un corps, qu’il opposa aux Syriens ; 10et il plaça sous le commandement de son frère Abischaï le reste du peuple, pour faire face aux fils d’Ammon. 11Il dit : Si les Syriens sont plus forts que moi, tu viendras à mon secours ; et si les fils d’Ammon sont plus forts que toi, j’irai te secourir. 12Sois ferme, et montrons du courage pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu, et que l’Éternel fasse ce qui lui semblera bon ! 13Joab, avec son peuple, s’avança pour attaquer les Syriens, et ils s’enfuirent devant lui. 14Et quand les fils d’Ammon virent que les Syriens avaient pris la fuite, ils s’enfuirent aussi devant Abischaï et rentrèrent dans la ville. Joab s’éloigna des fils d’Ammon et revint à Jérusalem. 15Les Syriens, voyant qu’ils avaient été battus par Israël, réunirent leurs forces. 16Hadarézer envoya chercher les Syriens qui étaient de l’autre côté du fleuve ; et ils arrivèrent à Hélam, ayant à leur tête Schobac, chef de l’armée d’Hadarézer. 17On l’annonça à David, qui assembla tout Israël, passa le Jourdain, et vint à Hélam. Les Syriens se préparèrent à la rencontre de David, et lui livrèrent bataille. 18Mais les Syriens s’enfuirent devant Israël. Et David leur tua les troupes de sept cents chars et quarante mille cavaliers ; il frappa aussi le chef de leur armée, Schobac, qui mourut sur place. 19Tous les rois soumis à Hadarézer, se voyant battus par Israël, firent la paix avec Israël et lui furent assujettis. Et les Syriens n’osèrent plus secourir les fils d’Ammon.
1After this, the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place. 2David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent by his servants to comfort him concerning his father. David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon. 3But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Hasn’t David sent his servants to you to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?” 4So Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away. 5When they told it to David, he sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. The king said, “Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.” 6When the children of Ammon saw that they were become odious to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth Rehob, and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah with one thousand men, and the men of Tob twelve thousand men. 7When David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the army of the mighty men. 8The children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate: and the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob, and the men of Tob and Maacah, were by themselves in the field. 9Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians: 10The rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the children of Ammon. 11He said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the children of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you. 12Be courageous, and let us be strong for our people, and for the cities of our God; and Yahweh do that which seems good to him.” 13So Joab and the people who were with him drew near to the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him. 14When the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem. 15When the Syrians saw that they were defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together. 16Hadadezer sent, and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the River: and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the army of Hadadezer at their head. 17It was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. The Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him. 18The Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed of the Syrians seven hundred charioteers, and forty thousand horsemen, and struck Shobach the captain of their army, so that he died there. 19When all the kings who were servants to Hadadezer saw that they were defeated before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.

Heeft David zijn knechten niet daarom tot u gezonden, dat hij deze stad doorzoeke, en die verspiede, en die omkere? 4Toen nam Hanun Davids knechten, en schoor hun baard half af, en sneed hun klederen half af, tot aan hun billen; en hij liet hen gaan. 5Als zij dit David lieten weten, zo zond hij hun tegemoet; want deze mannen waren zeer beschaamd. En de koning zeide: Blijft te Jericho, totdat uw baard weder gewassen zal zijn, komt dan weder. 6Toen nu de kinderen Ammons zagen, dat zij zich bij David stinkende gemaakt hadden, zonden de kinderen Ammons heen, en huurden van de Syriers van Beth-Rechob, en van de Syriers van Zoba, twintig duizend voetvolks, en van den koning van Maacha duizend man, en van de mannen van Tob twaalf duizend man. 7Als David dit hoorde, zond hij Joab heen, en het ganse heir met de helden. 8En de kinderen Ammons togen uit, en stelden de slagorde voor de deur der poort; maar de Syriers van Zoba, en Rechob, en de mannen van Tob en Maacha waren bijzonder in het veld. 9Als nu Joab zag, dat de spits der slagorde tegen hem was, van voren en van achteren, zo verkoos hij uit alle uitgelezenen van Israel, en stelde hen in orde tegen de Syriers aan; 10En het overige des volks gaf hij onder de hand van zijn broeder Abisai, die het in orde stelde tegen de kinderen Ammons aan. 11En hij zeide: Zo de Syriers mij te sterk zullen zijn, zo zult gij mij komen verlossen; en zo de kinderen Ammons u te sterk zullen zijn, zo zal ik komen om u te verlossen. 12Wees sterk, en laat ons sterk zijn voor ons volk, en voor de steden onzes Gods; de HEERE nu doe, wat goed is in Zijn ogen. 13Toen naderde Joab, en het volk, dat bij hem was, tot den strijd tegen de Syriers; en zij vloden voor zijn aangezicht. 14Als de kinderen Ammons zagen, dat de Syriers vloden, vloden zij ook voor het aangezicht van Abisai, en kwamen in de stad. En Joab keerde weder van de kinderen Ammons, en kwam te Jeruzalem. 15Toen nu de Syriers zagen, dat zij voor Israels aangezicht geslagen waren, zo vergaderden zij zich weder te zamen. 16En Hadad-ezer zond heen, en deed de Syriers uitkomen, die op gene zijde der rivier zijn, en zij kwamen te Helam; en Sobach, Hadad-ezers krijgsoverste, toog voor hun aangezicht heen. 17Als dat David werd aangezegd, verzamelde hij gans Israel, en toog over de Jordaan, en kwam te Helam, en de Syriers stelden de slagorde tegen David aan, en streden met hem. 18Maar de Syriers vloden voor Israels aangezicht, en David versloeg van de Syriers zevenhonderd wagenen, en veertig duizend ruiteren; daartoe sloeg hij Sobach, hun krijgsoverste, dat hij aldaar stierf. 19Toen nu al de koningen, die Hadad-ezers knechten waren, zagen, dat zij voor Israels aangezicht geslagen waren, maakten zij vrede met Israel, en dienden hen; en de Syriers vreesden de kinderen Ammons meer te verlossen.
