1L’Éternel envoya Nathan vers David. Et Nathan vint à lui, et lui dit : Il y avait dans une ville deux hommes, l’un riche et l’autre pauvre. 2Le riche avait des brebis et des bœufs en très grand nombre. 3Le pauvre n’avait rien du tout qu’une petite brebis, qu’il avait achetée ; il la nourrissait, et elle grandissait chez lui avec ses enfants ; elle mangeait de son pain, buvait dans sa coupe, dormait sur son sein, et il la regardait comme sa fille. 4Un voyageur arriva chez l’homme riche. Et le riche n’a pas voulu toucher à ses brebis ou à ses bœufs, pour préparer un repas au voyageur qui était venu chez lui ; il a pris la brebis du pauvre, et l’a apprêtée pour l’homme qui était venu chez lui. 5La colère de David s’enflamma violemment contre cet homme, et il dit à Nathan : L’Éternel est vivant ! L’homme qui a fait cela mérite la mort. 6Et il rendra quatre brebis, pour avoir commis cette action et pour avoir été sans pitié. 7Et Nathan dit à David : Tu es cet homme-là ! Ainsi parle l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël : Je t’ai oint pour roi sur Israël, et je t’ai délivré de la main de Saül ; 8je t’ai mis en possession de la maison de ton maître, j’ai placé dans ton sein les femmes de ton maître, et je t’ai donné la maison d’Israël et de Juda. Et si cela eût été peu, j’y aurais encore ajouté . 9Pourquoi donc as-tu méprisé la parole de l’Éternel, en faisant ce qui est mal à ses yeux ? Tu as frappé de l’épée Urie, le Héthien ; tu as pris sa femme pour en faire ta femme, et lui, tu l’as tué par l’épée des fils d’Ammon. 10Maintenant, l’épée ne s’éloignera jamais de ta maison, parce que tu m’as méprisé, et parce que tu as pris la femme d’Urie, le Héthien, pour en faire ta femme. 11Ainsi parle l’Éternel : Voici, je vais faire sortir de ta maison le malheur contre toi, et je vais prendre sous tes yeux tes propres femmes pour les donner à un autre, qui couchera avec elles à la vue de ce soleil. 12Car tu as agi en secret ; et moi, je ferai cela en présence de tout Israël et à la face du soleil. 13David dit à Nathan : J’ai péché contre l’Éternel ! Et Nathan dit à David : L’Éternel pardonne ton péché, tu ne mourras point. 14Mais, parce que tu as fait blasphémer les ennemis de l’Éternel, en commettant cette action, le fils qui t’est né mourra. 15Et Nathan s’en alla dans sa maison. L’Éternel frappa l’enfant que la femme d’Urie avait enfanté à David, et il fut dangereusement malade. 16David pria Dieu pour l’enfant, et jeûna ; et quand il rentra, il passa la nuit couché par terre. 17Les anciens de sa maison insistèrent auprès de lui pour le faire lever de terre ; mais il ne voulut point, et il ne mangea rien avec eux. 18Le septième jour, l’enfant mourut. Les serviteurs de David craignaient de lui annoncer que l’enfant était mort. Car ils disaient : Voici, lorsque l’enfant vivait encore, nous lui avons parlé, et il ne nous a pas écoutés ; comment oserons-nous lui dire : L’enfant est mort ? Il s’affligera bien davantage. 19David aperçut que ses serviteurs parlaient tout bas entre eux, et il comprit que l’enfant était mort. Il dit à ses serviteurs : L’enfant est-il mort ? Et ils répondirent : Il est mort. 20Alors David se leva de terre. Il se lava, s’oignit, et changea de vêtements ; puis il alla dans la maison de l’Éternel, et se prosterna. De retour chez lui, il demanda qu’on lui servît à manger, et il mangea. 21Ses serviteurs lui dirent : Que signifie ce que tu fais ? Tandis que l’enfant vivait, tu jeûnais et tu pleurais ; et maintenant que l’enfant est mort, tu te lèves et tu manges ! 22Il répondit : Lorsque l’enfant vivait encore, je jeûnais et je pleurais, car je disais : Qui sait si l’Éternel n’aura pas pitié de moi et si l’enfant ne vivra pas ? 23Maintenant qu’il est mort, pourquoi jeûnerais-je ? Puis-je le faire revenir ? J’irai vers lui, mais il ne reviendra pas vers moi. 24David consola Bath-Schéba, sa femme, et il alla auprès d’elle et coucha avec elle. Elle enfanta un fils qu’il appela Salomon, et qui fut aimé de l’Éternel. 25Il le remit entre les mains de Nathan le prophète, et Nathan lui donna le nom de Jedidja, à cause de l’Éternel. 26Joab, qui assiégeait Rabba des fils d’Ammon, s’empara de la ville royale, 27et envoya des messagers à David pour lui dire : J’ai attaqué Rabba, et je me suis déjà emparé de la ville des eaux ; 28rassemble maintenant le reste du peuple, campe contre la ville, et prends-la, de peur que je ne la prenne moi-même et que la gloire ne m’en soit attribuée. 29David rassembla tout le peuple, et marcha sur Rabba ; il l’attaqua, et s’en rendit maître. 30Il enleva la couronne de dessus la tête de son roi : elle pesait un talent d’or et était garnie de pierres précieuses. On la mit sur la tête de David, qui emporta de la ville un très grand butin. 31Il fit sortir les habitants, et il les plaça sous des scies, des herses de fer et des haches de fer, et les fit passer par des fours à briques ; il traita de même toutes les villes des fils d’Ammon. David retourna à Jérusalem avec tout le peuple.
1Yahweh sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, “There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor. 2The rich man had very many flocks and herds, 3but the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and raised. It grew up together with him, and with his children. It ate of his own food, drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was to him like a daughter. 4A traveler came to the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man who had come to him, but took the poor man’s lamb, and dressed it for the man who had come to him.” 5David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As Yahweh lives, the man who has done this is worthy to die! 6He shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity!” 7Nathan said to David, “You are the man. This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul. 8I gave you your master’s house, and your master’s wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that would have been too little, I would have added to you many more such things. 9Why have you despised Yahweh’s word, to do that which is evil in his sight? You have struck Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. 10Now therefore the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’ 11“This is what Yahweh says: ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. 12For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.’” 13David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against Yahweh.” Nathan said to David, “Yahweh also has put away your sin. You will not die. 14However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to Yahweh’s enemies to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die.” 15Nathan departed to his house. Yahweh struck the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and it was very sick. 16David therefore begged God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night on the earth. 17The elders of his house arose beside him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them. 18On the seventh day, the child died. The servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, “Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he didn’t listen to our voice. How will he then harm himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?” 19But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” They said, “He is dead.” 20Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his clothing; and he came into Yahweh’s house, and worshiped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he ate. 21Then his servants said to him, “What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive; but when the child was dead, you rose up and ate bread.” 22He said, “While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who knows whether Yahweh will not be gracious to me, that the child may live?’ 23But now he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.” 24David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her, and lay with her. She bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. Yahweh loved him; 25and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he named him Jedidiah, for Yahweh’s sake. 26Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city. 27Joab sent messengers to David, and said, “I have fought against Rabbah. Yes, I have taken the city of waters. 28Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it; lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.” 29David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it. 30He took the crown of their king from off his head; and its weight was a talent of gold, and in it were precious stones; and it was set on David’s head. He brought out the plunder of the city, exceeding much. 31He brought out the people who were therein, and put them under saws, and under iron picks, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick kiln: and he did so to all the cities of the children of Ammon. David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
1En de HEERE zond Nathan tot David. Als die tot hem inkwam, zeide hij tot hem: Er waren twee mannen in een stad, de een rijk en de ander arm. 2De rijke had zeer veel schapen en runderen. 3Maar de arme had gans niet dan een enig klein ooilam, dat hij gekocht had, en had het gevoed, dat het groot geworden was bij hem, en bij zijn kinderen tegelijk; het at van zijn bete, en dronk van zijn beker, en sliep in zijn schoot, en het was hem als een dochter. 4Toen nu den rijken man een wandelaar overkwam, verschoonde hij te nemen van zijn schapen en van zijn runderen, om voor den reizenden man, die tot hem gekomen was, wat te bereiden; en hij nam des armen mans ooilam, en bereidde dat voor den man, die tot hem gekomen was. 5Toen ontstak Davids toorn zeer tegen dien man; en hij zeide tot Nathan: Zo waarachtig als de HEERE leeft, de man, die dat gedaan heeft, is een kind des doods! 6En dat ooilam zal hij viervoudig wedergeven, daarom dat hij deze zaak gedaan, en omdat hij niet verschoond heeft. 7Toen zeide Nathan tot David: Gij zijt die man! Zo zegt de HEERE, de God Israels: Ik heb u ten koning gezalfd over Israel, en Ik heb u uit Sauls hand gered; 8En Ik heb u uws heren huis gegeven, daartoe uws heren vrouwen in uw schoot, ja, Ik heb u het huis van Israel en Juda gegeven; en indien het weinig is, Ik zou u alzulks en alzulks daartoe doen. 9Waarom hebt gij dan het woord des HEEREN veracht, doende wat kwaad is in Zijn ogen? Gij hebt Uria, den Hethiet, met het zwaard verslagen, en zijn huisvrouw hebt gij u ter vrouwe genomen; en hem hebt gij met het zwaard van de kinderen Ammons doodgeslagen. 10Nu dan, het zwaard zal van uw huis niet afwijken tot in eeuwigheid; daarom dat gij Mij veracht hebt, en de huisvrouw van Uria, den Hethiet, genomen hebt, dat zij u ter vrouwe zij. 11Zo zegt de HEERE: Zie, Ik zal kwaad over u verwekken uit uw huis, en zal uw vrouwen nemen voor uw ogen, en zal haar aan uw naaste geven; die zal bij uw vrouwen liggen, voor de ogen dezer zon. 12Want gij hebt het in het verborgen gedaan; maar Ik zal deze zaak doen voor gans Israel, en voor de zon. 13Toen zeide David tot Nathan: Ik heb gezondigd tegen den HEERE! En Nathan zeide tot David: De HEERE heeft ook uw zonde weggenomen, gij zult niet sterven. 14Nochtans, dewijl gij door deze zaak de vijanden des HEEREN grotelijks hebt doen lasteren, zal ook de zoon, die u geboren is, den dood sterven. 15Toen ging Nathan naar zijn huis. En de HEERE sloeg het kind, dat de huisvrouw van Uria David gebaard had, dat het zeer krank werd. 16En David zocht God voor dat jongsken; en David vastte een vasten, en ging in, en lag den nacht over op de aarde. 17Toen maakten zich de oudsten van zijn huis op tot hem, om hem te doen opstaan van de aarde; maar hij wilde niet, en at geen brood met hen. 18En het geschiedde op den zevenden dag, dat het kind stierf; en Davids knechten vreesden hem aan te zeggen, dat het kind dood was, want zij zeiden: Ziet, als het kind nog levend was, spraken wij tot hem, maar hij hoorde naar onze stem niet, hoe zullen wij dan tot hem zeggen: Het kind is dood? Want het mocht kwaad doen. 19Maar David zag, dat zijn knechten mompelden; zo merkte David, dat het kind dood was. Dies zeide David tot zijn knechten: Is het kind dood? En zij zeiden: Het is dood. 20Toen stond David op van de aarde, en wies en zalfde zich, en veranderde zijn kleding, en ging in het huis des HEEREN, en bad aan; daarna kwam hij in zijn huis, en eiste brood; en zij zetten hem brood voor, en hij at. 21Zo zeiden zijn knechten tot hem: Wat is dit voor een ding, dat gij gedaan hebt? Om des levenden kinds wil hebt gij gevast en geweend; maar nadat het kind gestorven is, zijt gij opgestaan en hebt brood gegeten. 22En hij zeide: Als het kind nog leefde, heb ik gevast en geweend; want ik zeide: Wie weet, de HEERE zou mij mogen genadig zijn, dat het kind levend bleve. 23Maar nu is het dood, waarom zou ik nu vasten? Zal ik hem nog kunnen wederhalen? Ik zal wel tot hem gaan, maar hij zal tot mij niet wederkomen. 24Daarna troostte David zijn huisvrouw Bathseba, en ging tot haar in, en lag bij haar; en zij baarde een zoon, wiens naam zij noemde Salomo; en de HEERE had hem lief. 25En zond heen door de hand van den profeet Nathan, en noemde zijn naam Jedid-Jah, om des HEEREN wil. 26Joab nu krijgde tegen Rabba der kinderen Ammons; en hij nam de koninklijke stad in. 27Toen zond Joab boden tot David, en zeide: Ik heb gekrijgd tegen Rabba, ook heb ik de waterstad ingenomen. 28Zo verzamel gij nu het overige des volks, en beleger de stad, en neem ze in; opdat niet, zo ik de stad zou innemen, mijn naam over haar uitgeroepen worde. 29Toen verzamelde David al dat volk, en toog naar Rabba; en hij krijgde tegen haar, en nam ze in. 30En hij nam de kroon haars konings van zijn hoofd af, welker gewicht was een talent gouds, met edelgesteente, en zij werd op Davids hoofd gezet; ook voerde hij uit een zeer groten roof der stad. 31Het volk nu, dat daarin was, voerde hij uit, en legde het onder zagen, en onder ijzeren dorswagens, en onder ijzeren bijlen, en deed hen door den ticheloven doorgaan; en alzo deed hij aan alle steden der kinderen Ammons. Daarna keerde David, en al het volk, weder naar Jeruzalem.
