1Joab, fils de Tseruja, s’aperçut que le cœur du roi était porté pour Absalom. 2Il envoya chercher à Tekoa une femme habile, et il lui dit : Montre-toi désolée, et revêts des habits de deuil ; ne t’oins pas d’huile, et sois comme une femme qui depuis longtemps pleure un mort. 3Tu iras ainsi vers le roi, et tu lui parleras de cette manière. Et Joab lui mit dans la bouche ce qu’elle devait dire. 4La femme de Tekoa alla parler au roi. Elle tomba la face contre terre et se prosterna, et elle dit : Ô roi, sauve-moi ! 5Le roi lui dit : Qu’as-tu ? Elle répondit : Oui, je suis veuve, mon mari est mort ! 6Ta servante avait deux fils ; ils se sont tous deux querellés dans les champs, et il n’y avait personne pour les séparer ; l’un a frappé l’autre, et l’a tué. 7Et voici, toute la famille s’est levée contre ta servante, en disant : Livre le meurtrier de son frère ! Nous voulons le faire mourir, pour la vie de son frère qu’il a tué ; nous voulons détruire même l’héritier ! Ils éteindraient ainsi le tison qui me reste, pour ne laisser à mon mari ni nom ni survivant sur la face de la terre. 8Le roi dit à la femme : Va dans ta maison. Je donnerai des ordres à ton sujet. 9La femme de Tekoa dit au roi : C’est sur moi, ô roi mon seigneur, et sur la maison de mon père, que le châtiment va tomber ; le roi et son trône n’auront pas à en souffrir. 10Le roi dit : Si quelqu’un parle contre toi, amène-le-moi, et il ne lui arrivera plus de te toucher. 11Elle dit : Que le roi se souvienne de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, afin que le vengeur du sang n’augmente pas la ruine, et qu’on ne détruise pas mon fils ! Et il dit : L’Éternel est vivant ! il ne tombera pas à terre un cheveu de ton fils. 12La femme dit : Permets que ta servante dise un mot à mon seigneur le roi. Et il dit : Parle ! 13La femme dit : Pourquoi penses-tu de la sorte à l’égard du peuple de Dieu, puisqu’il résulte des paroles mêmes du roi que le roi est comme coupable en ne rappelant pas celui qu’il a proscrit ? 14Il nous faut certainement mourir, et nous serons comme des eaux répandues à terre et qui ne se rassemblent plus ; Dieu n’ôte pas la vie, mais il désire que le fugitif ne reste pas banni de sa présence. 15Maintenant, si je suis venue dire ces choses au roi mon seigneur, c’est que le peuple m’a effrayée. Et ta servante a dit : Je veux parler au roi ; peut-être le roi fera-t-il ce que dira sa servante. 16Oui, le roi écoutera sa servante, pour la délivrer de la main de ceux qui cherchent à nous exterminer, moi et mon fils, de l’héritage de Dieu. 17Ta servante a dit : Que la parole de mon seigneur le roi me donne le repos. Car mon seigneur le roi est comme un ange de Dieu, prêt à entendre le bien et le mal. Et que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, soit avec toi ! 18Le roi répondit, et dit à la femme : Ne me cache pas ce que je vais te demander. Et la femme dit : Que mon seigneur le roi parle ! 19Le roi dit alors : La main de Joab n’est-elle pas avec toi dans tout ceci ? Et la femme répondit : Aussi vrai que ton âme est vivante, ô roi mon seigneur, il n’y a rien à droite ni à gauche de tout ce que dit mon seigneur le roi. C’est, en effet, ton serviteur Joab qui m’a donné des ordres, et qui a mis dans la bouche de ta servante toutes ces paroles. 20C’est pour donner à la chose une autre tournure que ton serviteur Joab a fait cela. Mais mon seigneur est aussi sage qu’un ange de Dieu, pour connaître tout ce qui se passe sur la terre. 21Le roi dit à Joab : Voici, je veux bien faire cela ; va donc, ramène le jeune homme Absalom. 22Joab tomba la face contre terre et se prosterna, et il bénit le roi. Puis il dit : Ton serviteur connaît aujourd’hui que j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, ô roi mon seigneur, puisque le roi agit selon la parole de son serviteur. 23Et Joab se leva et partit pour Gueschur, et il ramena Absalom à Jérusalem. 24Mais le roi dit : Qu’il se retire dans sa maison, et qu’il ne voie point ma face. Et Absalom se retira dans sa maison, et il ne vit point la face du roi. 25Il n’y avait pas un homme dans tout Israël aussi renommé qu’Absalom pour sa beauté ; depuis la plante du pied jusqu’au sommet de la tête, il n’y avait point en lui de défaut. 26Lorsqu’il se rasait la tête, -c’était chaque année qu’il se la rasait, parce que sa chevelure lui pesait, - le poids des cheveux de sa tête était de deux cents sicles, poids du roi. 27Il naquit à Absalom trois fils, et une fille nommée Tamar, qui était une femme belle de figure. 28Absalom demeura deux ans à Jérusalem, sans voir la face du roi. 29Il fit demander Joab, pour l’envoyer vers le roi ; mais Joab ne voulut point venir auprès de lui. Il le fit demander une seconde fois ; et Joab ne voulut point venir. 30Absalom dit alors à ses serviteurs : Voyez, le champ de Joab est à côté du mien ; il y a de l’orge ; allez et mettez-y le feu. Et les serviteurs d’Absalom mirent le feu au champ. 31Joab se leva et se rendit auprès d’Absalom, dans sa maison. Il lui dit : Pourquoi tes serviteurs ont-ils mis le feu au champ qui m’appartient ? 32Absalom répondit à Joab : Voici, je t’ai fait dire : Viens ici, et je t’enverrai vers le roi, afin que tu lui dises : Pourquoi suis-je revenu de Gueschur ? Il vaudrait mieux pour moi que j’y fusse encore. Je désire maintenant voir la face du roi ; et s’il y a quelque crime en moi, qu’il me fasse mourir. 33Joab alla vers le roi, et lui rapporta cela. Et le roi appela Absalom, qui vint auprès de lui et se prosterna la face contre terre en sa présence. Le roi baisa Absalom.
1Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart was toward Absalom. 2Joab sent to Tekoa, and fetched there a wise woman, and said to her, “Please act like a mourner, and put on mourning clothing, please, and don’t anoint yourself with oil, but be as a woman who has mourned a long time for the dead. 3Go in to the king, and speak like this to him.” So Joab put the words in her mouth. 4When the woman of Tekoa spoke to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, showed respect, and said, “Help, O king!” 5The king said to her, “What ails you?” She answered, “Truly I am a widow, and my husband is dead. 6Your handmaid had two sons, and they both fought together in the field, and there was no one to part them, but the one struck the other, and killed him. 7Behold, the whole family has risen against your handmaid, and they say, ‘Deliver him who struck his brother, that we may kill him for the life of his brother whom he killed, and so destroy the heir also.’ Thus they would quench my coal which is left, and would leave to my husband neither name nor remainder on the surface of the earth.” 8The king said to the woman, “Go to your house, and I will give a command concerning you.” 9The woman of Tekoa said to the king, “My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father’s house; and the king and his throne be guiltless.” 10The king said, “Whoever says anything to you, bring him to me, and he shall not touch you any more.” 11Then she said, “Please let the king remember Yahweh your God, that the avenger of blood destroy not any more, lest they destroy my son.” He said, “As Yahweh lives, not one hair of your son shall fall to the earth.” 12Then the woman said, “Please let your handmaid speak a word to my lord the king.” He said, “Say on.” 13The woman said, “Why then have you devised such a thing against the people of God? For in speaking this word the king is as one who is guilty, in that the king does not bring home again his banished one. 14For we must die, and are like water split on the ground, which can’t be gathered up again; neither does God take away life, but devises means, that he who is banished not be an outcast from him. 15Now therefore seeing that I have come to speak this word to my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid: and your handmaid said, ‘I will now speak to the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his servant.’ 16For the king will hear, to deliver his servant out of the hand of the man who would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God. 17Then your handmaid said, ‘Please let the word of my lord the king bring rest; for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad. May Yahweh, your God, be with you.’” 18Then the king answered the woman, “Please don’t hide anything from me that I ask you.” The woman said, “Let my lord the king now speak.” 19The king said, “Is the hand of Joab with you in all this?” The woman answered, “As your soul lives, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right hand or to the left from anything that my lord the king has spoken; for your servant Joab, he urged me, and he put all these words in the mouth of your handmaid; 20to change the face of the matter has your servant Joab done this thing. My lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.” 21The king said to Joab, “Behold now, I have done this thing. Go therefore, bring the young man Absalom back.” 22Joab fell to the ground on his face, showed respect, and blessed the king. Joab said, “Today your servant knows that I have found favor in your sight, my lord, king, in that the king has performed the request of his servant.” 23So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem. 24The king said, “Let him return to his own house, but let him not see my face.” So Absalom returned to his own house, and didn’t see the king’s face. 25Now in all Israel there was no one to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no defect in him. 26When he cut the hair of his head (now it was at every year’s end that he cut it; because it was heavy on him, therefore he cut it); he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels, after the king’s weight. 27To Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a beautiful face. 28Absalom lived two full years in Jerusalem; and he didn’t see the king’s face. 29Then Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king; but he would not come to him: and he sent again a second time, but he would not come. 30Therefore he said to his servants, “Behold, Joab’s field is near mine, and he has barley there. Go and set it on fire.” Absalom’s servants set the field on fire. 31Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom to his house, and said to him, “Why have your servants set my field on fire?” 32Absalom answered Joab, “Behold, I sent to you, saying, ‘Come here, that I may send you to the king, to say, “Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me to be there still. Now therefore let me see the king’s face; and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me.”’” 33So Joab came to the king, and told him; and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.
1Als nu Joab, de zoon van Zeruja, merkte, dat des konings hart over Absalom was; 2Zo zond Joab heen naar Thekoa, en nam van daar een wijze vrouw; en hij zeide tot haar: Stel u toch, alsof gij rouw droegt, en trek nu rouwklederen aan, en zalf u niet met olie, en wees als een vrouw, die nu vele dagen rouw gedragen heeft over een dode; 3En ga in tot den koning, en spreek tot hem naar dit woord. En Joab legde de woorden in haar mond. 4En de Thekoietische vrouw zeide tot den koning, als zij op haar aangezicht ter aarde was gevallen, en zich nedergebogen had, zo zeide zij: Behoud, o koning! 5En de koning zeide tot haar: Wat is u? En zij zeide: Zekerlijk, ik ben een weduwvrouw, en mijn man is gestorven. 6Nu had uw dienstmaagd twee zonen, en deze beiden twistten in het veld, en er was geen scheider tussen hen; en de een sloeg den ander, en doodde hem. 7En zie, het ganse geslacht is opgestaan tegen uw dienstmaagd, en hebben gezegd: Geef dien hier, die zijn broeder geslagen heeft, dat wij hem voor de ziel zijns broeders, dien hij doodgeslagen heeft, doden, en ook den erfgenaam verdelgen; alzo zullen zij mijn kool, die overgebleven is, uitblussen, opdat zij mijn man geen naam noch overblijfsel laten op den aardbodem. 8Toen zeide de koning tot deze vrouw: Ga naar uw huis, en ik zal voor u gebieden. 9En de Thekoietische vrouw zeide tot den koning: Mijn heer koning, de ongerechtigheid zij op mij en op mijns vaders huis; de koning daarentegen, en zijn stoel, zij onschuldig. 10En de koning zeide: Spreekt iemand tegen u, zo breng hem tot mij; en hij zal u voortaan niet meer aantasten. 11En zij zeide: De koning gedenke toch aan den HEERE, uw God, dat de bloedwrekers niet te vele worden om te verderven, dat zij mijn zoon niet verdelgen. Toen zeide hij: Zo waarachtig als de HEERE leeft, indien er een van de haren uws zoons op de aarde zal vallen! 12Toen zeide deze vrouw: Laat toch uw dienstmaagd een woord tot mijn heer den koning spreken. En hij zeide: Spreek. 13En de vrouw zeide: Waarom hebt gij dan alzulks tegen Gods volk gedaan? Want daaruit, dat de koning dit woord gesproken heeft, is hij als een schuldige, dewijl de koning zijn verstotene niet wederhaalt. 14Want wij zullen den dood sterven, en wezen als water, dat, ter aarde uitgestort zijnde, niet verzameld wordt. God dan zal de ziel niet wegnemen, maar Hij zal gedachten denken, dat Hij den verstotene niet van Zich verstote. 15Nu dan, dat ik gekomen ben, om ditzelve woord tot den koning, mijn heer, te spreken, is omdat het volk mij vreesachtig gemaakt heeft; zo zeide uw dienstmaagd: Ik zal nu tot den koning spreken; misschien zal de koning het woord zijner dienstmaagd doen. 16Want de koning zal horen, om zijn dienstmaagd te redden van de hand des mans, die voorheeft mij en mijn zoon te zamen van Gods erve te verdelgen. 17Wijders zeide uw dienstmaagd: Het woord mijns heren, des konings, zij toch tot rust; want gelijk een Engel Gods, alzo is mijn heer de koning, om te horen het goede en het kwade; en de HEERE, uw God, zal met u zijn. 18Toen antwoordde de koning, en zeide tot de vrouw: Verberg nu niet voor mij de zaak, die ik u vragen zal. En de vrouw zeide: Mijn heer de koning spreke toch. 19En de koning zeide: Is Joabs hand met u in dit alles? En de vrouw antwoordde en zeide: Zo waarachtig als uw ziel leeft, mijn heer koning, indien iemand ter rechter- of ter linkerhand zou kunnen afwijken van alles, wat mijn heer de koning gesproken heeft; want uw knecht Joab heeft het mij geboden, en die heeft al deze woorden in den mond uwer dienstmaagd gelegd; 20Dat ik de gestalte dezer zaak alzo omwenden zou, zulks heeft uw knecht Joab gedaan; doch mijn heer is wijs, naar de wijsheid van een Engel Gods, om te merken alles, wat op de aarde is. 21Toen zeide de koning tot Joab: Zie nu, ik heb deze zaak gedaan; zo ga henen, haal den jongeling Absalom weder. 22Toen viel Joab op zijn aangezicht ter aarde, en boog zich, en dankte den koning; en Joab zeide: Heden heeft uw knecht gemerkt, dat ik genade gevonden heb in uw ogen, mijn heer koning! Omdat de koning het woord van zijn knecht gedaan heeft. 23Alzo maakte zich Joab op, en toog naar Gesur; en hij bracht Absalom te Jeruzalem. 24En de koning zeide: Dat hij in zijn huis kere, en mijn aangezicht niet zie. Alzo keerde Absalom in zijn huis, en zag des konings aangezicht niet. 25Nu was er in gans Israel geen man zo schoon als Absalom, zeer te prijzen; van zijn voetzool af tot zijn hoofdschedel toe was er geen gebrek in hem. 26En als hij zijn hoofd beschoor, (nu geschiedde het ten einde van elk jaar, dat hij het beschoor, omdat het hem te zwaar was, zo beschoor hij het), zo woog het haar zijns hoofds tweehonderd sikkelen, naar des konings gewicht. 27Ook werden Absalom drie zonen geboren, en een dochter, welker naam was Thamar; deze was een vrouw, schoon van aanzien. 28Alzo bleef Absalom twee volle jaren te Jeruzalem, dat hij des konings aangezicht niet zag. 29Daarom zond Absalom tot Joab, dat hij hem tot den koning zond; maar hij wilde niet tot hem komen. Zo zond hij nog ten anderen male; evenwel wilde hij niet komen. 30Zo zeide hij tot zijn knechten: Ziet, het stuk akkers van Joab is aan de zijde van het mijne, en hij heeft gerst daarop; gaat heen, en steekt het aan met vuur, en Absaloms knechten staken dat stuk akkers aan met vuur. 31Toen maakte zich Joab op en kwam tot Absalom in het huis, en zeide tot hem: Waarom hebben uw knechten het stuk akkers, dat mijn is, met vuur aangestoken? 32En Absalom zeide tot Joab: Zie, ik heb tot u gezonden, zeggende: Kom herwaarts, dat ik u tot den koning zende, om te zeggen: Waarom ben ik van Gesur gekomen? Het ware mij goed, dat ik nog daar ware; nu dan, laat mij het aangezicht des konings zien; is er dan nog een misdaad in mij, zo dode hij mij. 33Toen ging Joab in tot den koning, en zeide het hem aan. Toen riep hij Absalom, en hij kwam tot den koning in, en boog zich voor hem op zijn aangezicht ter aarde, voor des konings aangezicht; en de koning kuste Absalom.
