1Après ces choses et ces actes de fidélité, parut Sanchérib, roi d’Assyrie, qui pénétra en Juda, et assiégea les villes fortes, dans l’intention de s’en emparer. 2Ézéchias, voyant que Sanchérib était venu et qu’il se proposait d’attaquer Jérusalem, 3tint conseil avec ses chefs et ses hommes vaillants, afin de boucher les sources d’eau qui étaient hors de la ville ; et ils furent de son avis. 4Une foule de gens se rassemblèrent, et ils bouchèrent toutes les sources et le ruisseau qui coule au milieu de la contrée. Pourquoi, disaient-ils, les rois d’Assyrie trouveraient-ils à leur arrivée des eaux en abondance ? 5Ézéchias prit courage ; il reconstruisit la muraille qui était en ruine et l’éleva jusqu’aux tours, bâtit un autre mur en dehors, fortifia Millo dans la cité de David, et prépara une quantité d’armes et de boucliers. 6Il donna des chefs militaires au peuple, et les réunit auprès de lui sur la place de la porte de la ville. S’adressant à leur cœur, il dit : 7Fortifiez-vous et ayez du courage ! Ne craignez point et ne soyez point effrayés devant le roi d’Assyrie et devant toute la multitude qui est avec lui ; car avec nous il y a plus qu’avec lui. 8Avec lui est un bras de chair, et avec nous l’Éternel, notre Dieu, qui nous aidera et qui combattra pour nous . Le peuple eut confiance dans les paroles d’Ézéchias, roi de Juda. 9Après cela, Sanchérib, roi d’Assyrie, envoya ses serviteurs à Jérusalem, pendant qu’il était devant Lakis avec toutes ses forces ; il les envoya vers Ézéchias, roi de Juda, et vers tous ceux de Juda qui étaient à Jérusalem, pour leur dire : 10Ainsi parle Sanchérib, roi d’Assyrie : Sur quoi repose votre confiance, pour que vous restiez à Jérusalem dans la détresse ? 11Ézéchias ne vous abuse-t-il pas pour vous livrer à la mort par la famine et par la soif, quand il dit : L’Éternel, notre Dieu, nous sauvera de la main du roi d’Assyrie ? 12N’est-ce pas lui, Ézéchias, qui a fait disparaître les hauts lieux et les autels de l’Éternel, et qui a donné cet ordre à Juda et à Jérusalem : Vous vous prosternerez devant un seul autel, et vous y offrirez les parfums ? 13Ne savez-vous pas ce que nous avons fait, moi et mes pères, à tous les peuples des autres pays ? Les dieux des nations de ces pays ont-ils pu délivrer leurs pays de ma main ? 14Parmi tous les dieux de ces nations que mes pères ont exterminées, quel est celui qui a pu délivrer son peuple de ma main, pour que votre Dieu puisse vous délivrer de ma main ? 15Qu’Ézéchias ne vous séduise donc point et qu’il ne vous abuse point ainsi ; ne vous fiez pas à lui ! Car aucun dieu d’aucune nation ni d’aucun royaume n’a pu délivrer son peuple de ma main et de la main de mes pères : combien moins votre Dieu vous délivrera-t-il de ma main ? 16Les serviteurs de Sanchérib parlèrent encore contre l’Éternel Dieu, et contre Ézéchias, son serviteur. 17Et il envoya une lettre insultante pour l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël, en s’exprimant ainsi contre lui : De même que les dieux des nations des autres pays n’ont pu délivrer leur peuple de ma main, de même le Dieu d’Ézéchias ne délivrera pas son peuple de ma main. 18Les serviteurs de Sanchérib crièrent à haute voix en langue judaïque, afin de jeter l’effroi et l’épouvante parmi le peuple de Jérusalem qui était sur la muraille, et de pouvoir ainsi s’emparer de la ville. 19Ils parlèrent du Dieu de Jérusalem comme des dieux des peuples de la terre, ouvrages de mains d’homme. 20Le roi Ézéchias et le prophète Ésaïe, fils d’Amots, se mirent à prier à ce sujet, et ils crièrent au ciel. 21Alors l’Éternel envoya un ange, qui extermina dans le camp du roi d’Assyrie tous les vaillants hommes, les princes et les chefs. Et le roi confus retourna dans son pays. Il entra dans la maison de son dieu, et là ceux qui étaient sortis de ses entrailles le firent tomber par l’épée. 22Ainsi l’Éternel sauva Ézéchias et les habitants de Jérusalem de la main de Sanchérib, roi d’Assyrie, et de la main de tous, et il les protégea contre ceux qui les entouraient. 23Beaucoup de gens apportèrent dans Jérusalem des offrandes à l’Éternel, et de riches présents à Ézéchias, roi de Juda, qui depuis lors fut élevé aux yeux de toutes les nations. 24En ce temps-là, Ézéchias fut malade à la mort. Il fit une prière à l’Éternel ; et l’Éternel lui adressa la parole, et lui accorda un prodige. 25Mais Ézéchias ne répondit point au bienfait qu’il avait reçu, car son cœur s’éleva ; et la colère de l’Éternel fut sur lui, sur Juda et sur Jérusalem. 26Alors Ézéchias, du sein de son orgueil, s’humilia avec les habitants de Jérusalem, et la colère de l’Éternel ne vint pas sur eux pendant la vie d’Ézéchias. 27Ézéchias eut beaucoup de richesses et de gloire. Il se fit des trésors d’argent, d’or, de pierres précieuses, d’aromates, de boucliers et de tous les objets qu’on peut désirer ; 28des magasins pour les produits en blé, en moût et en huile, des crèches pour toute espèce de bétail, et des étables pour les troupeaux. 29Il se bâtit des villes, et il eut en abondance des troupeaux de menu et de gros bétail ; car Dieu lui avait donné des biens considérables. 30Ce fut aussi lui, Ézéchias, qui boucha l’issue supérieure des eaux de Guihon, et les conduisit en bas vers l’occident de la cité de David. Ézéchias réussit dans toutes ses entreprises. 31Cependant, lorsque les chefs de Babylone envoyèrent des messagers auprès de lui pour s’informer du prodige qui avait eu lieu dans le pays, Dieu l’abandonna pour l’éprouver, afin de connaître tout ce qui était dans son cœur. 32Le reste des actions d’Ézéchias, et ses œuvres de piété, cela est écrit dans la vision du prophète Ésaïe, fils d’Amots, dans le livre des rois de Juda et d’Israël. 33Ézéchias se coucha avec ses pères, et on l’enterra dans le lieu le plus élevé des sépulcres des fils de David ; tout Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem lui rendirent honneur à sa mort. Et Manassé, son fils, régna à sa place.
1After these things, and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fortified cities, and thought to win them for himself. 2When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem, 3he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the springs which were outside of the city; and they helped him. 4So many people gathered together, and they stopped all the springs, and the brook that flowed through the midst of the land, saying, “Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?” 5He took courage, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised it up to the towers, and the other wall outside, and strengthened Millo in the city of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance. 6He set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the broad place at the gate of the city, and spoke comfortably to them, saying, 7“Be strong and courageous, don’t be afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude who is with him; for there is a greater with us than with him. 8With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is Yahweh our God to help us, and to fight our battles.” The people rested themselves on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah. 9After this, Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem, (now he was before Lachish, and all his power with him), to Hezekiah king of Judah, and to all Judah who were at Jerusalem, saying, 10Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria, “In whom do you trust, that you remain under siege in Jerusalem? 11Doesn’t Hezekiah persuade you, to give you over to die by famine and by thirst, saying, ‘Yahweh our God will deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?’ 12Hasn’t the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, ‘You shall worship before one altar, and on it you shall burn incense?’ 13Don’t you know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands in any way able to deliver their land out of my hand? 14Who was there among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of my hand? 15Now therefore don’t let Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you in this way, neither believe him; for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you out of my hand?” 16His servants spoke yet more against Yahweh God, and against his servant Hezekiah. 17He also wrote letters insulting Yahweh, the God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, “As the gods of the nations of the lands, which have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall the God of Hezekiah not deliver his people out of my hand.” 18They cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city. 19They spoke of the God of Jerusalem, as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men’s hands. 20Hezekiah the king, and Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, prayed because of this, and cried to heaven. 21Yahweh sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men of valor, and the leaders and captains, in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. When he had come into the house of his god, those who came out of his own bowels killed him there with the sword. 22Thus Yahweh saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all others, and guided them on every side. 23Many brought gifts to Yahweh to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah; so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from thenceforth. 24In those days Hezekiah was sick even to death: and he prayed to Yahweh; and he spoke to him, and gave him a sign. 25But Hezekiah didn’t render again according to the benefit done to him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath on him, and on Judah and Jerusalem. 26Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of Yahweh didn’t come on them in the days of Hezekiah. 27Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honor: and he provided him treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all kinds of goodly vessels; 28storehouses also for the increase of grain and new wine and oil; and stalls for all kinds of animals, and flocks in folds. 29Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance; for God had given him very much substance. 30This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper spring of the waters of Gihon, and brought them straight down on the west side of the city of David. Hezekiah prospered in all his works. 31However concerning the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart. 32Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his good deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 33Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent of the tombs of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honor at his death. Manasseh his son reigned in his place.

En het volk steunde op de woorden van Jehizkia, den koning van Juda. 9Na dezen zond Sanherib, de koning van Assyrie, zijn knechten naar Jeruzalem,, doch hij zelf was voor Lachis, en al zijn heerschappij met hem) tot Jehizkia, den koning van Juda, en tot het ganse Juda, dat te Jeruzalem was, zeggende: 10Zo zegt Sanherib, de koning van Assyrie: Waarom vertrouwt gij, dat gij te Jeruzalem blijft in de vesting? 11Ruit u Jehizkia niet op, dat hij u overgeve, om door honger en door dorst te sterven, zeggende: De HEERE, onze God, zal ons uit de hand des konings van Assyrie redden? 12Heeft niet dezelfde Jehizkia Zijn hoogten en Zijn altaren weggenomen, en tot Juda en tot Jeruzalem gesproken, zeggende: Voor het enige altaar zult gij u nederbuigen, en daarop roken? 13Weet gij niet, wat ik gedaan heb, en mijn vaderen aan alle volken der landen? Hebben de goden van de natien dier landen hun land enigszins kunnen redden uit mijn hand? 14Wie is er onder alle goden derzelver natien, dewelke mijn vaders verbannen hebben, die zijn volk heeft kunnen redden uit mijn hand, dat uw God u uit mijn hand zou kunnen redden? 15Nu dan, dat Jehizkia ulieden niet bedriege, en dat hij u op zulk een wijze niet opruie, en gelooft hem niet; want geen god van enige natie en koninkrijk heeft zijn volk uit mijn hand en mijner vaderen hand kunnen redden; hoeveel te min zal uw God u uit mijn hand kunnen redden? 16Daartoe spraken zijn knechten nog meer tegen God, den HEERE, en tegen Zijn knecht Jehizkia. 17Ook schreef hij brieven, om den HEERE, den God Israels, te honen en om tegen Hem te spreken, zeggende: Gelijk de goden van de natien der landen, die hun volk uit mijn hand niet gered hebben, alzo zal de God van Jehizkia Zijn volk uit mijn hand niet redden. 18En zij riepen met luider stem, in het Joods, tegen het volk van Jeruzalem, dat op den muur was, om die bevreesd te maken en die te beroeren, opdat zij de stad mochten innemen. 19En zij spraken van den God van Jeruzalem, als van de goden der volkeren der aarde, een werk van mensenhanden. 20Maar de koning Jehizkia en de profeet Jesaja, de zoon van Amoz, baden daartegen, en zij riepen naar den hemel. 21En de HEERE zond een engel, die alle strijdbare helden, en vorsten, en oversten in het leger des konings van Assyrie verdelgde. Zo is hij met schaamte des aangezichts in zijn land wedergekeerd; en als hij in het huis zijns gods ingegaan was, zo velden hem daar met het zwaard, die uit zijn lijf voortgekomen waren. 22Alzo verloste de HEERE Jehizkia en de inwoners van Jeruzalem, uit de hand van Sanherib, den koning van Assyrie, en uit de hand van allen; en Hij geleidde hen rondom heen. 23En velen brachten geschenken tot den HEERE te Jeruzalem, en kostelijkheden tot Jehizkia, den koning van Juda, zodat hij daarna voor de ogen van alle heidenen verheven werd. 24In die dagen werd Jehizkia krank tot stervens toe, en hij bad tot den HEERE, Die sprak tot hem, en Hij gaf hem een wonderteken. 25Maar Jehizkia deed gene vergelding, naar de weldaad aan hem geschied, dewijl zijn hart verheven werd; daarom werd over hem, en over Juda en Jeruzalem, een grote toornigheid. 26Doch Jehizkia verootmoedigde zich om de verheffing zijns harten, hij en de inwoners van Jeruzalem, zodat de grote toornigheid des HEEREN over hen niet kwam in de dagen van Jehizkia. 27Jehizkia nu had zeer veel rijkdom en eer; en hij maakte zich schatkameren voor zilver en voor goud, en voor kostelijk gesteente, en voor specerijen, en voor schilden, en voor alle begeerlijk gereedschap; 28Ook schathuizen voor de inkomsten van koren, en most, en olie; en stallen voor allerlei beesten, en kooien voor de kudden. 29Daartoe had hij zich steden gemaakt, mitsgaders bezitting van schapen en runderen in menigte; want God gaf hem zeer grote have. 30Doch Jehizkia stopte ook den opperuitgang der wateren van Gihon, en leidde ze recht af beneden naar het westen der stad Davids; want Jehizkia had voorspoed in al zijn werk. 31Maar het is alzo, als de gezanten der vorsten van Babel, die tot hem gezonden hadden, om te vragen naar dat wonderteken, dat in het land geschied was, bij hem waren, verliet hem God, om hem te verzoeken, om te weten al wat in zijn hart was. 32Het overige nu der geschiedenissen van Jehizkia, en zijn goeddadigheden, ziet, die zijn geschreven in het gezicht van den profeet Jesaja, den zoon van Amoz, en in het boek der koningen van Juda en Israel. 33En Jehizkia ontsliep met zijn vaderen, en zij begroeven hem in het hoogste van de graven der zonen van David; daartoe deden gans Juda en de inwoners van Jeruzalem hem eer aan in zijn dood; en zijn zoon Manasse werd koning in zijn plaats.
