1Ézéchias devint roi à l’âge de vingt-cinq ans, et il régna vingt-neuf ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s’appelait Abija, fille de Zacharie. 2Il fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de l’Éternel, entièrement comme avait fait David, son père. 3La première année de son règne, au premier mois, il ouvrit les portes de la maison de l’Éternel, et il les répara. 4Il fit venir les sacrificateurs et les Lévites, qu’il assembla dans la place orientale, 5et il leur dit : Écoutez-moi, Lévites ! Maintenant sanctifiez-vous, sanctifiez la maison de l’Éternel, le Dieu de vos pères, et mettez ce qui est impur hors du sanctuaire. 6Car nos pères ont péché, ils ont fait ce qui est mal aux yeux de l’Éternel, notre Dieu, ils l’ont abandonné, ils ont détourné leurs regards du tabernacle de l’Éternel et lui ont tourné le dos. 7Ils ont même fermé les portes du portique et éteint les lampes, et ils n’ont offert au Dieu d’Israël ni parfums ni holocaustes dans le sanctuaire. 8Aussi la colère de l’Éternel a été sur Juda et sur Jérusalem, et il les a livrés au trouble, à la désolation et à la moquerie, comme vous le voyez de vos yeux. 9Et voici, à cause de cela nos pères sont tombés par l’épée, et nos fils, nos filles et nos femmes sont en captivité. 10J’ai donc l’intention de faire alliance avec l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël, pour que son ardente colère se détourne de nous. 11Maintenant, mes fils, cessez d’être négligents ; car vous avez été choisis par l’Éternel pour vous tenir à son service devant lui, pour être ses serviteurs, et pour lui offrir des parfums. 12Et les Lévites se levèrent : Machath, fils d’Amasaï, Joël, fils d’Azaria, des fils des Kehathites ; et des fils des Merarites, Kis, fils d’Abdi, Azaria, fils de Jehalléleel ; et des Guerschonites, Joach, fils de Zimma, Éden, fils de Joach ; 13et des fils d’Élitsaphan, Schimri et Jeïel ; et des fils d’Asaph, Zacharie et Matthania ; 14et des fils d’Héman, Jehiel et Schimeï ; et des fils de Jeduthun, Schemaeja et Uzziel. 15Ils réunirent leurs frères, et, après s’être sanctifiés, ils vinrent pour purifier la maison de l’Éternel, selon l’ordre du roi et d’après les paroles de l’Éternel. 16Les sacrificateurs entrèrent dans l’intérieur de la maison de l’Éternel pour la purifier ; ils sortirent toutes les impuretés qu’ils trouvèrent dans le temple de l’Éternel et les mirent dans le parvis de la maison de l’Éternel, où les Lévites les reçurent pour les emporter dehors au torrent de Cédron. 17Ils commencèrent ces purifications le premier jour du premier mois ; le huitième jour du mois, ils entrèrent dans le portique de l’Éternel, et ils mirent huit jours à purifier la maison de l’Éternel ; le seizième jour du premier mois, ils avaient achevé. 18Ils se rendirent ensuite chez le roi Ézéchias, et dirent : Nous avons purifié toute la maison de l’Éternel, l’autel des holocaustes et tous ses ustensiles, et la table des pains de proposition et tous ses ustensiles. 19Nous avons remis en état et purifié tous les ustensiles que le roi Achaz avait profanés pendant son règne, lors de ses transgressions : ils sont devant l’autel de l’Éternel. 20Le roi Ézéchias se leva de bon matin, assembla les chefs de la ville, et monta à la maison de l’Éternel. 21Ils offrirent sept taureaux, sept béliers, sept agneaux et sept boucs, en sacrifice d’expiation pour le royaume, pour le sanctuaire, et pour Juda. Le roi ordonna aux sacrificateurs, fils d’Aaron, de les offrir sur l’autel de l’Éternel. 22Les sacrificateurs égorgèrent les bœufs, et reçurent le sang, qu’ils répandirent sur l’autel ; ils égorgèrent les béliers, et répandirent le sang sur l’autel ; ils égorgèrent les agneaux, et répandirent le sang sur l’autel. 23On amena ensuite les boucs expiatoires devant le roi et devant l’assemblée, qui posèrent leurs mains sur eux. 24Les sacrificateurs les égorgèrent, et répandirent leur sang au pied de l’autel en expiation pour les péchés de tout Israël ; car c’était pour tout Israël que le roi avait ordonné l’holocauste et le sacrifice d’expiation. 25Il fit placer les Lévites dans la maison de l’Éternel avec des cymbales, des luths et des harpes, selon l’ordre de David, de Gad le voyant du roi, et de Nathan, le prophète ; car c’était un ordre de l’Éternel, transmis par ses prophètes. 26Les Lévites prirent place avec les instruments de David, et les sacrificateurs avec les trompettes. 27Ézéchias ordonna d’offrir l’holocauste sur l’autel ; et au moment où commença l’holocauste, commença aussi le chant de l’Éternel, au son des trompettes et avec accompagnement des instruments de David, roi d’Israël. 28Toute l’assemblée se prosterna, on chanta le cantique, et l’on sonna des trompettes, le tout jusqu’à ce que l’holocauste fût achevé. 29Et quand on eut achevé d’offrir l’holocauste, le roi et tous ceux qui étaient avec lui fléchirent le genou et se prosternèrent. 30Puis le roi Ézéchias et les chefs dirent aux Lévites de célébrer l’Éternel avec les paroles de David et du prophète Asaph ; et ils le célébrèrent avec des transports de joie, et ils s’inclinèrent et se prosternèrent. 31Ézéchias prit alors la parole, et dit : Maintenant que vous vous êtes consacrés à l’Éternel, approchez-vous, amenez des victimes et offrez en sacrifices d’actions de grâces à la maison de l’Éternel. Et l’assemblée amena des victimes et offrit des sacrifices d’actions de grâces, et tous ceux dont le cœur était bien disposé offrirent des holocaustes. 32Le nombre des holocaustes offerts par l’assemblée fut de soixante-dix bœufs, cent béliers, et deux cents agneaux ; toutes ces victimes furent immolées en holocauste à l’Éternel. 33Et l’on consacra encore six cents bœufs et trois mille brebis. 34Mais les sacrificateurs étaient en petit nombre, et ils ne purent dépouiller tous les holocaustes ; leurs frères, les Lévites, les aidèrent jusqu’à ce que l’ouvrage fût fini, et jusqu’à ce que les autres sacrificateurs se fussent sanctifiés, car les Lévites avaient eu plus à cœur de se sanctifier que les sacrificateurs. 35Il y avait d’ailleurs beaucoup d’holocaustes, avec les graisses des sacrifices d’actions de grâces, et avec les libations des holocaustes. Ainsi fut rétabli le service de la maison de l’Éternel. 36Ézéchias et tout le peuple se réjouirent de ce que Dieu avait bien disposé le peuple, car la chose se fit subitement.
1Hezekiah began to reign when he was twenty-five years old; and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah. 2He did that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh, according to all that David his father had done. 3He in the first year of his reign, in the first month, opened the doors of Yahweh’s house, and repaired them. 4He brought in the priests and the Levites, and gathered them together into the broad place on the east, 5and said to them, “Listen to me, you Levites! Now sanctify yourselves, and sanctify Yahweh’s house, the God of your fathers, and carry out the filthiness out of the holy place. 6For our fathers have trespassed, and done that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh our God, and have forsaken him, and have turned away their faces from the habitation of Yahweh, and turned their backs. 7Also they have shut up the doors of the porch, and put out the lamps, and have not burned incense nor offered burnt offerings in the holy place to the God of Israel. 8Therefore the wrath of Yahweh was on Judah and Jerusalem, and he has delivered them to be tossed back and forth, to be an astonishment, and a hissing, as you see with your eyes. 9For, behold, our fathers have fallen by the sword, and our sons and our daughters and our wives are in captivity for this. 10Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with Yahweh, the God of Israel, that his fierce anger may turn away from us. 11My sons, don’t be negligent now; for Yahweh has chosen you to stand before him, to minister to him, and that you should be his ministers, and burn incense.” 12Then the Levites arose, Mahath, the son of Amasai, and Joel the son of Azariah, of the sons of the Kohathites; and of the sons of Merari, Kish the son of Abdi, and Azariah the son of Jehallelel; and of the Gershonites, Joah the son of Zimmah, and Eden the son of Joah; 13and of the sons of Elizaphan, Shimri and Jeuel; and of the sons of Asaph, Zechariah and Mattaniah; 14and of the sons of Heman, Jehuel and Shimei; and of the sons of Jeduthun, Shemaiah and Uzziel. 15They gathered their brothers, and sanctified themselves, and went in, according to the commandment of the king by Yahweh’s words, to cleanse Yahweh’s house. 16The priests went in to the inner part of Yahweh’s house, to cleanse it, and brought out all the uncleanness that they found in Yahweh’s temple into the court of Yahweh’s house. The Levites took it, to carry it out abroad to the brook Kidron. 17Now they began on the first day of the first month to sanctify, and on the eighth day of the month came they to the porch of Yahweh; and they sanctified Yahweh’s house in eight days: and on the sixteenth day of the first month they made an end. 18Then they went in to Hezekiah the king within the palace, and said, “We have cleansed all Yahweh’s house, and the altar of burnt offering, with all its vessels, and the table of show bread, with all its vessels. 19Moreover all the vessels, which king Ahaz in his reign threw away when he trespassed, have we prepared and sanctified; and behold, they are before the altar of Yahweh.” 20Then Hezekiah the king arose early, and gathered the princes of the city, and went up to Yahweh’s house. 21They brought seven bulls, and seven rams, and seven lambs, and seven male goats, for a sin offering for the kingdom and for the sanctuary and for Judah. He commanded the priests the sons of Aaron to offer them on the altar of Yahweh. 22So they killed the bulls, and the priests received the blood, and sprinkled it on the altar: and they killed the rams, and sprinkled the blood on the altar: they killed also the lambs, and sprinkled the blood on the altar. 23They brought near the male goats for the sin offering before the king and the assembly; and they laid their hands on them: 24and the priests killed them, and they made a sin offering with their blood on the altar, to make atonement for all Israel; for the king commanded that the burnt offering and the sin offering should be made for all Israel. 25He set the Levites in Yahweh’s house with cymbals, with stringed instruments, and with harps, according to the commandment of David, and of Gad the king’s seer, and Nathan the prophet; for the commandment was of Yahweh by his prophets. 26The Levites stood with the instruments of David, and the priests with the trumpets. 27Hezekiah commanded to offer the burnt offering on the altar. When the burnt offering began, the song of Yahweh began also, and the trumpets, together with the instruments of David king of Israel. 28All the assembly worshiped, and the singers sang, and the trumpeters sounded; all this continued until the burnt offering was finished. 29When they had made an end of offering, the king and all who were present with him bowed themselves and worshiped. 30Moreover Hezekiah the king and the princes commanded the Levites to sing praises to Yahweh with the words of David, and of Asaph the seer. They sang praises with gladness, and they bowed their heads and worshiped. 31Then Hezekiah answered, “Now you have consecrated yourselves to Yahweh; come near and bring sacrifices and thank offerings into Yahweh’s house.” The assembly brought in sacrifices and thank offerings; and as many as were of a willing heart brought burnt offerings. 32The number of the burnt offerings which the assembly brought was seventy bulls, one hundred rams, and two hundred lambs: all these were for a burnt offering to Yahweh. 33The consecrated things were six hundred head of cattle and three thousand sheep. 34But the priests were too few, so that they could not flay all the burnt offerings: therefore their brothers the Levites helped them, until the work was ended, and until the priests had sanctified themselves; for the Levites were more upright in heart to sanctify themselves than the priests. 35Also the burnt offerings were in abundance, with the fat of the peace offerings, and with the drink offerings for every burnt offering. So the service of Yahweh’s house was set in order. 36Hezekiah rejoiced, and all the people, because of that which God had prepared for the people: for the thing was done suddenly.

en het brandoffer hebben zij in het heiligdom aan de God Israels niet geofferd. 8Daarom is een grote toorn des HEEREN over Juda en Jeruzalem geweest; en Hij heeft hen overgegeven ter beroering, ter verwoesting en ter aanfluiting, gelijk als gij ziet met uw ogen. 9Want ziet, onze vaders zijn door het zwaard gevallen; daartoe onze zonen, en onze dochteren, en onze vrouwen zijn daarom in gevangenis geweest. 10Nu is het in mijn hart een verbond te maken met den HEERE, den God Israels, opdat de hitte Zijns toorns van ons afkere. 11Mijn zonen, weest nu niet traag; want de HEERE heeft u verkoren, dat gij voor Zijn aangezicht staan zoudt, om Hem te dienen; en opdat gij Hem dienaars en wierokers zoudt wezen. 12Toen maakten zich de Levieten op, Mahath, de zoon van Amasai, en Joel, de zoon van Azarja, van de kinderen der Kahathieten; en op den zestienden dag der eerste maand maakten zij een einde. 18Daarna kwamen zij binnen tot den koning Hizkia, en zeiden: Wij hebben het gehele huis des HEEREN gereinigd, mitsgaders het brandofferaltaar met al zijn gereedschap, en de tafel der toerichting met al haar gereedschap. 19Alle gereedschap ook, dat de koning Achaz, onder zijn koninkrijk, door zijn overtreding weggeworpen had, hebben wij bereid en geheiligd; en zie, zij zijn voor het altaar des HEEREN. 20Toen maakte zich de koning Jehizkia vroeg op, en verzamelde de oversten der stad, en hij ging op in het huis des HEEREN. 21En zij brachten zeven varren, en zeven rammen, en zeven lammeren, en zeven geitenbokken ten zondoffer voor het koninkrijk, en voor het heiligdom, en voor Juda; en hij zeide tot de zonen van Aaron, de priesteren, dat zij die op het altaar des HEEREN zouden offeren. 22Zo slachtten zij de runderen, en de priesters ontvingen het bloed, en sprengden het op het altaar; zij slachtten ook de rammen, en sprengden het bloed op het altaar; insgelijks slachtten zij de lammeren, en sprengden het bloed op het altaar. 23Daarna brachten zij de bokken bij, ten zondoffer, voor het aangezicht des konings en der gemeente, en zij legden hun handen op dezelve. 24En de priesteren slachtten ze, en ontzondigden met derzelver bloed op het altaar, om verzoening te doen voor het ganse Israel; want de koning had dat brandoffer en dat zondoffer voor gans Israel bevolen. 25En hij stelde de Levieten in het huis des HEEREN, met cimbalen, met luiten en harpen, naar het gebod van David, en van Gad, den ziener des konings, en van Nathan, den profeet; want dit gebod was van de hand des HEEREN, door de hand Zijner profeten. 26De Levieten nu stonden met de instrumenten van David, en de priesters met de trompetten. 27En Hizkia beval, dat men het brandoffer op het altaar zou offeren; ten tijde nu, als dat brandoffer begon, begon het gezang des HEEREN met de trompetten en met de instrumenten van David, den koning van Israel. 28De ganse gemeente nu boog zich neder, als men het gezang zong, en met trompetten trompette; dit alles totdat het brandoffer voleind was. 29Als men nu geeindigd had te offeren, bukten de koning en allen, die bij hem gevonden waren, en bogen zich neder. 30Daarna zeide de koning Jehizkia, en de oversten, tot de Levieten, dat zij den HEERE loven zouden, met de woorden van David en van Asaf, den ziener; en zij loofden tot blijdschap toe; en neigden hun hoofden, en bogen zich neder. 31En Jehizkia antwoordde en zeide: Nu hebt gij uw handen den HEERE gevuld, treedt toe, en brengt slachtofferen en lofofferen tot het huis des HEEREN; en de gemeente bracht slachtofferen en lofofferen en alle vrijwilligen van harte brandofferen. 32En het getal der brandofferen, die de gemeente bracht, was zeventig runderen, honderd rammen, tweehonderd lammeren; deze alle den HEERE ten brandoffer. 33Nog waren der geheiligde dingen zeshonderd runderen en drie duizend schapen. 34Doch van de priesteren waren er te weinig, en zij konden al den brandofferen de huid niet aftrekken; daarom hielpen hen hun broederen, de Levieten, totdat het werk geeindigd was, en totdat de andere priesters zich geheiligd hadden; want de Levieten waren rechter van hart, om zich te heiligen, dan de priesteren. 35En ook waren de brandofferen in menigte, met het vet der dankofferen, en met de drankofferen, voor de brandofferen; alzo werd de dienst van het huis des HEEREN besteld. 36Jehizkia nu en al het volk verblijdden zich over hetgeen God het volk voorbereid had; want deze zaak geschiedde haastelijk.
