1Josaphat, roi de Juda, revint en paix dans sa maison à Jérusalem. 2Jéhu, fils de Hanani, le prophète, alla au-devant de lui. Et il dit au roi Josaphat : Doit-on secourir le méchant, et aimes-tu ceux qui haïssent l’Éternel ? À cause de cela, l’Éternel est irrité contre toi. 3Mais il s’est trouvé de bonnes choses en toi, car tu as fait disparaître du pays les idoles, et tu as appliqué ton cœur à chercher Dieu. 4Josaphat resta à Jérusalem. Puis il fit encore une tournée parmi le peuple, depuis Beer-Schéba jusqu’à la montagne d’Éphraïm, et il les ramena à l’Éternel, le Dieu de leurs pères. 5Il établit des juges dans toutes les villes fortes du pays de Juda, dans chaque ville . 6Et il dit aux juges : Prenez garde à ce que vous ferez, car ce n’est pas pour les hommes que vous prononcerez des jugements ; c’est pour l’Éternel, qui sera près de vous quand vous les prononcerez. 7Maintenant, que la crainte de l’Éternel soit sur vous ; veillez sur vos actes, car il n’y a chez l’Éternel, notre Dieu, ni iniquité, ni égards pour l’apparence des personnes, ni acceptation de présents. 8Quand on fut de retour à Jérusalem, Josaphat y établit aussi , pour les jugements de l’Éternel et pour les contestations, des Lévites, des sacrificateurs et des chefs de maisons paternelles d’Israël. 9Et voici les ordres qu’il leur donna : Vous agirez de la manière suivante dans la crainte de l’Éternel, avec fidélité et avec intégrité de cœur. 10Dans toute contestation qui vous sera soumise par vos frères, établis dans leurs villes, relativement à un meurtre, à une loi, à un commandement, à des préceptes et à des ordonnances, vous les éclairerez, afin qu’ils ne se rendent pas coupables envers l’Éternel, et que sa colère n’éclate pas sur vous et sur vos frères. C’est ainsi que vous agirez, et vous ne serez point coupables. 11Et voici, vous avez à votre tête Amaria, le souverain sacrificateur, pour toutes les affaires de l’Éternel, et Zebadia, fils d’Ismaël, chef de la maison de Juda, pour toutes les affaires du roi, et vous avez devant vous des Lévites comme magistrats. Fortifiez-vous et agissez, et que l’Éternel soit avec celui qui fera le bien !
1Jehoshaphat the king of Judah returned to his house in peace to Jerusalem. 2Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, “Should you help the wicked, and love those who hate Yahweh? Because of this, wrath is on you from before Yahweh. 3Nevertheless there are good things found in you, in that you have put away the Asheroth out of the land, and have set your heart to seek God.” 4Jehoshaphat lived at Jerusalem: and he went out again among the people from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim, and brought them back to Yahweh, the God of their fathers. 5He set judges in the land throughout all the fortified cities of Judah, city by city, 6and said to the judges, “Consider what you do: for you don’t judge for man, but for Yahweh; and he is with you in the judgment. 7Now therefore let the fear of Yahweh be on you. Take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with Yahweh our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of bribes.” 8Moreover in Jerusalem Jehoshaphat appointed Levites and priests, and of the heads of the fathers’ households of Israel, for the judgment of Yahweh, and for controversies. They returned to Jerusalem. 9He commanded them, saying, “Thus you shall do in the fear of Yahweh, faithfully, and with a perfect heart. 10Whenever any controversy shall come to you from your brothers who dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and ordinances, you shall warn them, that they not be guilty towards Yahweh, and so wrath come on you and on your brothers. Do this, and you shall not be guilty. 11Behold, Amariah the chief priest is over you in all matters of Yahweh; and Zebadiah the son of Ishmael, the ruler of the house of Judah, in all the king’s matters: also the Levites shall be officers before you. Deal courageously, and may Yahweh be with the good.”
1En Josafat, de koning van Juda, keerde met vrede weder naar zijn huis te Jeruzalem. 2En Jehu, de zoon van Hanani, de ziener, ging uit, hem tegen, en zeide tot den koning Josafat: Zoudt gij den goddeloze helpen, en die den HEERE haten, liefhebben? Nu is daarom over u van het aangezicht des HEEREN grote toornigheid. 3Evenwel goede dingen zijn bij u gevonden; want gij hebt de bossen uit het land weggedaan, en uw hart gericht om God te zoeken. 4Josafat nu woonde in Jeruzalem; en hij toog wederom uit door het volk, van Ber-seba af tot het gebergte van Efraim toe, en deed hen wederkeren tot den HEERE, hunner vaderen God. 5En hij stelde richters in het land, in alle vaste steden van Juda, van stad tot stad. 6En hij zeide tot de richters: Ziet wat gij doet, want gij houdt het gericht niet den mens, maar den HEERE; en Hij is bij u in de zaak van het gericht. 7Nu dan, de verschrikking des HEEREN zij op ulieden; neemt waar, en doet het; want bij den HEERE, onzen God, is geen onrecht, noch aanneming van personen, noch ontvanging van geschenken. 8Daartoe stelde Josafat ook te Jeruzalem enige van de Levieten, en van de priesteren, en van de hoofden der vaderen van Israel, over het gericht des HEEREN, en over rechtsgeschillen, als zij weder te Jeruzalem gekomen waren. 9En hij gebood hun, zeggende: Doet alzo in de vreze des HEEREN, met getrouwheid en met een volkomen hart. 10En in alle geschil, hetwelk van uw broederen, die in hun steden wonen, tot u zal komen, tussen bloed en bloed, tussen wet en gebod, en inzettingen en rechten, zo vermaant hen, dat zij niet schuldig worden aan den HEERE, en een grote toornigheid over u en over uw broederen zij; doet alzo, en gij zult niet schuldig worden. 11En ziet, Amarja, den hoofdpriester, is over u in alle zaak des HEEREN; en Zebadja, de zoon van Ismael, de vorst van het huis van Juda, in alle zaak des konings; ook zijn de ambtlieden, de Levieten, voor uw aangezicht; weest sterk en doet het, en de HEERE zal met den goede zijn.
