1Les Philistins livrèrent bataille à Israël, et les hommes d’Israël prirent la fuite devant les Philistins et tombèrent morts sur la montagne de Guilboa. 2Les Philistins poursuivirent Saül et ses fils, et tuèrent Jonathan, Abinadab et Malki-Schua, fils de Saül. 3L’effort du combat porta sur Saül ; les archers l’atteignirent et le blessèrent. 4Saül dit alors à celui qui portait ses armes : Tire ton épée, et transperce-m’en, de peur que ces incirconcis ne viennent me faire subir leurs outrages. Celui qui portait ses armes ne voulut pas, car il était saisi de crainte. Et Saül prit son épée, et se jeta dessus. 5Celui qui portait les armes de Saül, le voyant mort, se jeta aussi sur son épée, et mourut. 6Ainsi périrent Saül et ses trois fils, et toute sa maison périt en même temps. 7Tous ceux d’Israël qui étaient dans la vallée, ayant vu qu’on avait fui et que Saül et ses fils étaient morts, abandonnèrent leurs villes pour prendre aussi la fuite. Et les Philistins allèrent s’y établir. 8Le lendemain, les Philistins vinrent pour dépouiller les morts, et ils trouvèrent Saül et ses fils tombés sur la montagne de Guilboa. 9Ils le dépouillèrent, et emportèrent sa tête et ses armes. Puis ils firent annoncer ces bonnes nouvelles par tout le pays des Philistins à leurs idoles et au peuple. 10Ils mirent les armes de Saül dans la maison de leur dieu, et ils attachèrent son crâne dans le temple de Dagon. 11Tout Jabès en Galaad ayant appris tout ce que les Philistins avaient fait à Saül, 12tous les hommes vaillants se levèrent, prirent le corps de Saül et ceux de ses fils, et les transportèrent à Jabès. Ils enterrèrent leurs os sous le térébinthe, à Jabès, et ils jeûnèrent sept jours. 13Saül mourut, parce qu’il se rendit coupable d’infidélité envers l’Éternel, dont il n’observa point la parole , et parce qu’il interrogea et consulta ceux qui évoquent les morts. 14Il ne consulta point l’Éternel ; alors l’Éternel le fit mourir, et transféra la royauté à David, fils d’Isaï.
1Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain on Mount Gilboa. 2The Philistines followed hard after Saul and after his sons; and the Philistines killed Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul. 3The battle went hard against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was distressed by reason of the archers. 4Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me.” But his armor bearer would not; for he was terrified. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell on it. 5When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell on his sword, and died. 6So Saul died, and his three sons; and all his house died together. 7When all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and lived in them. 8On the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9They stripped him, and took his head, and his armor, and sent into the land of the Philistines all around, to carry the news to their idols, and to the people. 10They put his armor in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the house of Dagon. 11When all Jabesh Gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul, 12all the valiant men arose, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days. 13So Saul died for his trespass which he committed against Yahweh, because of Yahweh’s word, which he didn’t keep; and also because he asked counsel of one who had a familiar spirit, to inquire, 14and didn’t inquire of Yahweh: therefore he killed him, and turned the kingdom to David the son of Jesse.
1En de Filistijnen streden tegen Israel, en de mannen van Israel vloden voor het aangezicht der Filistijnen, en zij vielen verslagen op het gebergte Gilboa. 2En de Filistijnen hielden dicht achter Saul aan en achter zijn zonen; en de Filistijnen sloegen Jonathan, en Abinadab, en Malchi-sua, de zonen van Saul. 3En de strijd werd zwaar tegen Saul, en de schutters met de bogen troffen hem aan; en hij vreesde zeer voor de schutters. 4Toen zeide Saul tot zijn wapendrager: Trek uw zwaard uit en doorsteek mij daarmede, dat misschien deze onbesnedenen niet komen, en met mij den spot drijven. Maar zijn wapendrager wilde niet, want hij vreesde zeer. Toen nam Saul het zwaard, en viel daarin. 5Toen zijn wapendrager zag, dat Saul dood was, zo viel hij ook in het zwaard en stierf. 6Alzo stierf Saul en zijn drie zonen; ook zijn ganse huis is tegelijk gestorven. 7Als al de mannen van Israel, die in het dal waren, zagen, dat zij gevloden waren, en dat Saul en zijn zonen dood waren, zo verlieten zij hun steden, en zij vloden. Toen kwamen de Filistijnen en woonden daarin. 8Het geschiedde nu des anderen daags, als de Filistijnen kwamen om de verslagenen te plunderen, zo vonden zij Saul en zijn zonen, liggende op het gebergte Gilboa. 9En zij plunderden hem, en zij namen zijn hoofd en zijn wapenen, en zij zonden ze in der Filistijnen land rondom, om dit te boodschappen aan hun afgoden, en aan het volk. 10En zij legden zijn wapenen in het huis huns gods; en zijn hoofd hechtten zij in het huis van Dagon. 11Als geheel Jabes in Gilead hoorde alles, wat de Filistijnen Saul gedaan hadden, 12Zo maakten zich alle strijdbare mannen op, en zij namen het lichaam van Saul, en de lichamen zijner zonen, en zij brachten ze te Jabes; en zij begroeven hun beenderen onder een eikenboom te Jabes, en zij vastten zeven dagen. 13Alzo stierf Saul, in zijn overtreding, waarmede hij overtreden had tegen den HEERE, tegen het woord des HEEREN hetwelk hij niet gehouden had; en ook omdat hij de waarzegster gevraagd had, haar zoekende, 14En den HEERE niet gezocht had; daarom doodde Hij hem, en keerde het koninkrijk tot David, den zoon van Isai.
