1Ήτο δε ανήρ τις εκ του Βενιαμίν, ονομαζόμενος Κείς, υιός του Αβιήλ, υιού του Σερώρ, υιού του Βεχωράθ, υιού του Αφιά, ανδρός Βενιαμίτου, δυνατός εν ισχύϊ. 2Είχε δε ούτος υιόν, ονομαζόμενον Σαούλ, εκλεκτόν και ώραίον· και δεν υπήρχε μεταξύ των υιών Ισραήλ άνθρωπος ώραιότερος αυτού· από των ώμων αυτού και επάνω εξείχεν υπέρ παντός του λαού. 3Και αι όνοι του Κείς πατρός του Σαούλ εχάθησαν· και είπεν ο Κείς προς τον Σαούλ τον υιόν αυτού, Λάβε τώρα μετά σου ένα των υπηρετών, και σηκωθείς ύπαγε να ζητήσης τας όνους. 4Και επέρασε διά του όρους Εφραΐμ και επέρασε διά της γης Σαλισά, αλλά δεν εύρηκαν αυτάς· και επέρασαν διά της γης Σααλείμ, πλην δεν ήσαν εκεί· και επέρασε διά της γης Ιεμινί, αλλά δεν εύρηκαν αυτάς. 5Ότε δε ήλθον εις την γην Σούφ, είπεν ο Σαούλ προς τον υπηρέτην αυτού τον μετ' αυτού, Ελθέ, και ας επιστρέψωμεν, μήποτε ο πατήρ μου, αφήσας την φροντίδα των όνων, συλλογίζηται περί ημών. 6Ο δε είπε προς αυτόν, Ιδού τώρα, εν τη πόλει ταύτη είναι άνθρωπος του Θεού, και ο άνθρωπος είναι ένδοξος· παν ό,τι είπη γίνεται εξάπαντος· ας υπάγωμεν λοιπόν εκεί· ίσως φανερώση εις ημάς την οδόν ημών, την οποίαν πρέπει να υπάγωμεν. 7Και είπεν ο Σαούλ προς τον υπηρέτην αυτού, Αλλ' ιδού, θέλομεν υπάγει, πλην τι θέλομεν φέρει προς τον άνθρωπον; διότι ο άρτος εξέλιπεν εκ των αγγείων ημών· και δώρον δεν υπάρχει να προσφέρωμεν εις τον άνθρωπον του Θεού· τι έχομεν; 8Και αποκριθείς πάλιν ο υπηρέτης προς τον Σαούλ, είπεν, Ιδού, ευρίσκεται εν τη χειρί μου εν τέταρτον σίκλου αργυρίου, το οποίον θέλω δώσει εις τον άνθρωπον του Θεού, και θέλει φανερώσει εις ημάς την οδόν ημών. 9Το πάλαι εν τω Ισραήλ, οπότε τις υπήγαινε να ερωτήση τον Θεόν, έλεγεν ούτως· Έλθετε, και ας υπάγωμεν έως εις τον βλέποντα· διότι ο σήμερον προφήτης εκαλείτο το πάλαι ο βλέπων. 10Τότε είπεν ο Σαούλ προς τον υπηρέτην αυτού, Καλός ο λόγος σου· ελθέ, ας υπάγωμεν. Υπήγαν λοιπόν εις την πόλιν, όπου ήτο ο άνθρωπος του Θεού. 11Και ενώ ανέβαινον το ανήφορον της πόλεως, εύρηκαν κοράσια εξερχόμενα διά να αντλήσωσιν ύδωρ· και είπον προς αυτά, Είναι ενταύθα ο βλέπων; 12Και εκείνα απεκρίθησαν προς αυτούς και είπον, Είναι ιδού, έμπροσθέν σου· τάχυνον λοιπόν· διότι σήμερον ήλθεν εις την πόλιν, επειδή είναι σήμερον θυσία του λαού επί του υψηλού τόπου· 13ευθύς όταν εισέλθητε εις την πόλιν, θέλετε ευρεί αυτόν, πριν αναβή εις τον υψηλόν τόπον διά να φάγη· διότι ο λαός δεν τρώγει εωσού έλθη αυτός, επειδή ούτος ευλογεί την θυσίαν· μετά ταύτα τρώγουσιν οι κεκλημένοι τώρα λοιπόν ανάβητε· διότι περί την ώραν ταύτην θέλετε ευρεί αυτόν. 14Και ανέβησαν εις την πόλιν· και ενώ εισήρχοντο εις την πόλιν, ιδού, ο Σαμουήλ εξήρχετο ενώπιον αυτών, διά να αναβή εις τον υψηλόν τόπον. 15Είχε δε αποκαλύψει ο Κύριος προς τον Σαμουήλ, μίαν ημέραν πριν έλθη ο Σαούλ, λέγων; 16Αύριον περί την ώραν ταύτην θέλω αποστείλει προς σε άνθρωπον εκ γης Βενιαμίν, και θέλεις χρίσει αυτόν άρχοντα επί τον λαόν μου Ισραήλ, και θέλει σώσει τον λαόν μου εκ χειρός των Φιλισταίων· διότι επέβλεψα επί τον λαόν μου, επειδή η βοή αυτών ήλθεν εις εμέ. 17Και ότε ο Σαμουήλ είδε τον Σαούλ, ο Κύριος είπε προς αυτόν, Ιδού, ο άνθρωπος, περί του οποίου σοι είπα· ούτος θέλει άρχει επί τον λαόν μου. 18Τότε επλησίασεν ο Σαούλ προς τον Σαμουήλ εις την πύλην και είπε, Δείξον μοι, παρακαλώ, που είναι η οικία του βλέποντος. 19Και απεκρίθη ο Σαμουήλ προς τον Σαούλ και είπεν, Εγώ είμαι ο βλέπων· ανάβα έμπροσθέν μου εις τον υψηλόν τόπον· και θέλετε φάγει σήμερον μετ' εμού, και το πρωΐ θέλω σε εξαποστείλει και πάντα όσα είναι εν τη καρδία σου θέλω αναγγείλει προς σέ· 20περί δε των όνων, τας οποίας έχασας ήδη τρεις ημέρας, μη φρόντιζε περί αυτών, διότι ευρέθησαν· και προς τίνα είναι πάσα η επιθυμία του Ισραήλ; δεν είναι προς σε, και προς πάντα τον οίκον του πατρός σου; 21Αποκριθείς δε ο Σαούλ είπε, Δεν είμαι εγώ Βενιαμίτης, εκ της μικροτέρας των φυλών Ισραήλ; και η οικογένειά μου η ελαχίστη πασών των οικογενειών της φυλής Βενιαμίν; διά τι λοιπόν λαλείς ούτω προς εμέ; 22Και έλαβεν ο Σαμουήλ τον Σαούλ και τον υπηρέτην αυτού και έφερεν αυτούς εις το οίκημα, και έδωκεν εις αυτούς την πρώτην θέσιν μεταξύ των κεκλημένων, οίτινες ήσαν περίπου τριάκοντα άνδρες. 23Και είπεν ο Σαμουήλ προς τον μάγειρον, Φέρε το μερίδιον το οποίον σοι έδωκα, περί του οποίον σοι είπα, Φύλαττε τούτο πλησίον σου. 24Και ύψωσεν ο μάγειρος την πλάτην και το επ' αυτήν και έθεσεν έμπροσθεν του Σαούλ. Και είπεν ο Σαμουήλ, Ιδού, το εναπολειφθέν· θες αυτό έμπροσθέν σου, φάγε· διότι διά την ώραν ταύτην εφυλάχθη διά σε, ότε είπα, Προσεκάλεσα τον λαόν. Και έφαγεν ο Σαούλ μετά του Σαμουήλ εν τη ημέρα εκείνη. 25Και αφού κατέβησαν εκ του υψηλού τόπου εις την πόλιν, συνωμίλησεν ο Σαμουήλ μετά του Σαούλ επί του δώματος. 26Και εσηκώθησαν ενωρίς· και περί τα χαράγματα της ημέρας, εκάλεσεν ο Σαμουήλ τον Σαούλ όντα επί του δώματος, λέγων, Σηκώθητι, διά να σε εξαποστείλω. Και εσηκώθη ο Σαούλ, και εξήλθον αμφότεροι, αυτός και ο Σαμουήλ, έως έξω. 27Καθώς δε κατέβαινον εις το τέλος της πόλεως, είπεν ο Σαμουήλ προς τον Σαούλ, Πρόσταξον τον υπηρέτην να περάση έμπροσθεν ημών· και εκείνος επέρασε· συ όμως στάθητι ολίγον, και θέλω σοι αναγγείλει τον λόγον του Θεού.
1Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a Benjamite, a mighty man of valor. 2He had a son, whose name was Saul, an impressive young man; and there was not among the children of Israel a better person than he. From his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people. 3The donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. Kish said to Saul his son, “Take now one of the servants with you, and arise, go seek the donkeys.” 4He passed through the hill country of Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they didn’t find them: then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and there they weren’t there: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they didn’t find them. 5When they had come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come, and let us return, lest my father stop caring about the donkeys, and be anxious for us.” 6He said to him, “See now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is a man who is held in honor. All that he says comes surely to pass. Now let us go there. Perhaps he can tell us concerning our journey whereon we go.” 7Then Saul said to his servant, “But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? For the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?” 8The servant answered Saul again, and said, “Behold, I have in my hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.” 9(In earlier times in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he said, “Come, and let us go to the seer”; for he who is now called a prophet was before called a Seer.) 10Then Saul said to his servant, “Well said. Come, let us go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was. 11As they went up the ascent to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said to them, “Is the seer here?” 12They answered them, and said, “He is. Behold, he is before you. Hurry now, for he has come today into the city; for the people have a sacrifice today in the high place. 13As soon as you have come into the city, you shall immediately find him, before he goes up to the high place to eat; for the people will not eat until he come, because he blesses the sacrifice. Afterwards those who are invited eat. Now therefore go up; for at this time you shall find him.” 14They went up to the city. As they came within the city, behold, Samuel came out toward them, to go up to the high place. 15Now Yahweh had revealed to Samuel a day before Saul came, saying, 16“Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel; and he shall save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked on my people, because their cry has come to me.” 17When Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh said to him, “Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! this same shall have authority over my people.” 18Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, “Please tell me where the seer’s house is.” 19Samuel answered Saul, and said, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for you shall eat with me today. In the morning I will let you go, and will tell you all that is in your heart. 20As for your donkeys who were lost three days ago, don’t set your mind on them; for they are found. For whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for you, and for all your father’s house?” 21Saul answered, “Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? And my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak to me like this?” 22Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the guest room, and made them sit in the best place among those who were invited, who were about thirty persons. 23Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion which I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Set it aside.’” 24The cook took up the thigh, and that which was on it, and set it before Saul. Samuel said, “Behold, that which has been reserved! Set it before yourself and eat; because for the appointed time has it been kept for you, for I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul ate with Samuel that day. 25When they had come down from the high place into the city, he talked with Saul on the housetop. 26They arose early: and about daybreak, Samuel called to Saul on the housetop, saying, “Get up, that I may send you away.” Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad. 27As they were going down at the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant pass on before us” (and he passed on), “but stand still first, that I may cause you to hear the word of God.”

Want het brood is weg uit onze vaten, en wij hebben geen gaven, om den man Gods te brengen; wat hebben wij? 8En de jongen antwoordde Saul verder en zeide: Zie, er vindt zich in mijn hand het vierendeel eens zilveren sikkels; dat zal ik den man Gods geven, opdat hij ons onzen weg wijze. 9(Eertijds zeide een ieder aldus in Israel, als hij ging om God te vragen: Komt en laat ons gaan tot den ziener; want die heden een profeet genoemd wordt, die werd eertijds een ziener genoemd.) 10Toen zeide Saul tot zijn jongen: Uw woord is goed, kom, laat ons gaan. En zij gingen naar de stad, waar de man Gods was. 11Als zij opklommen door den opgang der stad, zo vonden zij maagden, die uitgingen om water te putten; en zij zeiden tot haar: Is de ziener hier? 12Toen antwoordden zij hun, en zeiden: Ziet, hij is voor uw aangezicht; haast u nu, want hij is heden in de stad gekomen, dewijl het volk heden een offerande heeft op de hoogte. 13Wanneer gijlieden in de stad komt, zo zult gij hem vinden, eer hij opgaat op de hoogte om te eten; want het volk zal niet eten, totdat hij komt, want hij zegent het offer, daarna eten de genodigden; daarom gaat nu op, want hem, als heden zult gij hem vinden. 14Alzo gingen zij op in de stad. Toen zij in het midden der stad kwamen, ziet, zo ging Samuel uit hun tegemoet, om op te gaan naar de hoogte. 15Want de HEERE had het voor Samuels oor geopenbaard, een dag eer Saul kwam, zeggende: 16Morgen omtrent dezen tijd zal Ik tot u zenden een man uit het land van Benjamin, dien zult gij ten voorganger zalven over Mijn volk Israel; en hij zal Mijn volk verlossen uit der Filistijnen hand, want Ik heb Mijn volk aangezien, dewijl deszelfs geroep tot Mij gekomen is. 17Toen Samuel Saul aanzag, zo antwoordde hem de HEERE: Zie, dit is de man, van welken Ik u gezegd heb: Deze zal over Mijn volk heersen. 18En Saul naderde tot Samuel in het midden der poort, en zeide: Wijs mij toch, waar is hier het huis des zieners? 19En Samuel antwoordde Saul en zeide: Ik ben de ziener; ga op voor mijn aangezicht op de hoogte, dat gijlieden heden met mij eet; zo zal ik u morgen vroeg laten gaan, en alles, wat in uw hart is, zal ik u te kennen geven. 20Want de ezelinnen aangaande, die gij heden den derden dag verloren hebt, zet uw hart daarop niet, want zij zijn gevonden; en wiens zal zijn al het gewenste, dat in Israel is? Is het niet van u, en van het ganse huis uws vaders? 21Toen antwoordde Saul, en zeide: Ben ik niet een zoon van Jemini, van de kleinsten der stammen van Israel? en mijn geslacht is het niet het kleinste van al de geslachten van den stam van Benjamin? Waarom spreekt gij mij dan aan met zulke woorden? 22Samuel dan nam Saul en zijn jongen, en hij bracht ze in de kamer; en hij gaf hun plaats aan het opperste der genodigden; die nu waren omtrent dertig man. 23Toen zeide Samuel tot den kok: Lang dat stuk, hetwelk Ik u gegeven heb, waarvan ik tot u zeide: Zet het bij u weg. 24De kok nu bracht een schouder op, met wat daaraan was, en zette het voor Saul; en hij zeide: Zie, dit is het overgeblevene; zet het voor u, eet, want het is ter bestemder tijd voor u bewaard, als ik zeide: Ik heb het volk genodigd. Alzo at Saul met Samuel op dien dag. 25Daarna gingen zij af van de hoogte in de stad; en hij sprak met Saul op het dak. 26En zij stonden vroeg op; en het geschiedde, omtrent den opgang des dageraads, zo riep Samuel Saul op het dak, zeggende: Sta op, en zij beiden gingen uit, hij en Samuel, naar buiten. 27Toen zij afgegaan waren aan het einde der stad, zo zeide Samuel tot Saul: Zeg den jongen, dat hij voor onze aangezichten heenga; toen ging hij heen; maar sta gij als nu stil, en ik zal u Gods woord doen horen.
