1Είπε δε Σαμουήλ προς τον Σαούλ, Εμέ απέστειλεν ο Κύριος να σε χρίσω βασιλέα επί τον λαόν αυτού, επί τον Ισραήλ· τώρα λοιπόν άκουσον της φωνής των λόγων του Κυρίου. 2Ούτω λέγει ο Κύριος των δυνάμεων· Θέλω εκδικήσει όσα έκαμεν ο Αμαλήκ εις τον Ισραήλ, ότι αντεστάθη εις αυτόν εν τη οδώ, ότε ανέβαινεν εξ Αιγύπτου· 3ύπαγε τώρα και πάταξον τον Αμαλήκ, και εξολόθρευσον παν ό,τι έχει και μη φεισθής αυτούς· αλλά θανάτωσον και άνδρα και γυναίκα και παιδίον και θηλάζον και βουν και πρόβατον και κάμηλον και όνον. 4Και ο Σαούλ εκάλεσε τον λαόν και απηρίθμησεν αυτούς εν Τελαΐμ, διακοσίας χιλιάδας πεζών και δέκα χιλιάδας ανδρών Ιούδα. 5Και ήλθεν ο Σαούλ έως της πόλεως του Αμαλήκ και ενέδρευσεν εν τη φάραγγι. 6Και είπεν ο Σαούλ προς τους Κεναίους, Υπάγετε, αναχωρήσατε, κατάβητε εκ μέσου των Αμαληκιτών, διά να μη σας συμπεριλάβω μετ' αυτών· διότι σεις εδείξατε έλεος εις πάντας τους υιούς Ισραήλ, ότε ανέβαινον εξ Αιγύπτου. Και ανεχώρησαν οι Κεναίοι εκ μέσου των Αμαληκιτών. 7Και επάταξεν ο Σαούλ τους Αμαληκίτας από Αβιλά έως της εισόδου Σούρ, της κατά πρόσωπον Αιγύπτου. 8Και συνέλαβεν Αγάγ τον βασιλέα των Αμαληκιτών ζώντα, πάντα δε τον λαόν εξωλόθρευσεν εν στόματι μαχαίρας. 9Πλην εφείσθη ο Σαούλ και ο λαός τον Αγάγ και τα καλήτερα των προβάτων και των βοών και των δευτερευόντων και των αρνίων και παντός αγαθού, και δεν ήθελον να εξολοθρεύσωσιν αυτά· αλλά παν το ευτελές και εξουδενωμένον, εκείνο εξωλόθρευσαν. 10Τότε έγεινε λόγος Κυρίου προς τον Σαμουήλ, λέγων, 11Μετεμελήθην ότι έκαμα τον Σαούλ βασιλέα· διότι εστράφη από όπισθέν μου και τους λόγους μου δεν εξετέλεσε. Και τούτο ελύπησε τον Σαμουήλ, και εβόησε προς τον Κύριον δι' όλης της νυκτός. 12Και ότε εξηγέρθη ο Σαμουήλ ενωρίς διά να υπάγη εις συνάντησιν του Σαούλ το πρωΐ, ανήγγειλαν προς τον Σαμουήλ, λέγοντες, Ο Σαούλ ήλθεν εις τον Κάρμηλον, και ιδού, ανήγειρεν εις εαυτόν τρόπαιον· έπειτα εστράφη και διεπέρασε και κατέβη εις Γάλγαλα. 13Και υπήγεν ο Σαμουήλ προς τον Σαούλ· και είπεν ο Σαούλ προς αυτόν, Ευλογημένος να ήσαι παρά του Κυρίου· εξετέλεσα τον λόγον του Κυρίου. 14Είπε δε ο Σαμουήλ, Και τις η φωνή αύτη των προβάτων εις τα ώτα μου, και η φωνή των βοών, την οποίαν ακούω; 15Και είπεν ο Σαούλ, Εκ των Αμαληκιτών έφεραν αυτά· διότι ο λαός εφείσθη τα καλήτερα των προβάτων και των βοών, διά να θυσιάση εις Κύριον τον Θεόν σου· τα δε λοιπά εξωλοθρεύσαμεν. 16Τότε είπεν ο Σαμουήλ προς τον Σαούλ, Άφες, και θέλω απαγγείλει προς σε τι ελάλησεν ο Κύριος εις εμέ την νύκτα. Ο δε είπε προς αυτόν, Λέγε. 17Και είπεν ο Σαμουήλ, Ενώ συ ήσο μικρός έμπροσθεν των οφθαλμών σου, δεν έγεινες η κεφαλή των φυλών του Ισραήλ, και σε έχρισεν ο Κύριος βασιλέα επί τον Ισραήλ; 18και σε έστειλεν ο Κύριος εις την οδόν και είπεν, Ύπαγε και εξολόθρευσον τους αμαρτάνοντας εις εμέ, τους Αμαληκίτας, και πολέμησον εναντίον αυτών εωσού εξαφανίσης αυτούς· 19διά τι λοιπόν δεν υπήκουσας της φωνής του Κυρίου, αλλ' ώρμησας επί τα λάφυρα και έπραξας το κακόν ενώπιον του Κυρίου; 20Και είπεν ο Σαούλ προς τον Σαμουήλ, Ναι, υπήκουσα της φωνής του Κυρίου και υπήγα εις την οδόν εις την οποίαν ο Κύριος με απέστειλε και έφερα τον Αγάγ τον βασιλέα του Αμαλήκ, τους δε Αμαληκίτας εξωλόθρευσα· 21ο λαός όμως έλαβεν εκ των λαφύρων πρόβατα και βόας, τα καλήτερα από των απηγορευμένων, διά να θυσιάση εις Κύριον τον Θεόν σου εν Γαλγάλοις. 22Και είπεν ο Σαμουήλ, Μήπως ο Κύριος αρέσκεται εις τα ολοκαυτώματα και εις τας θυσίας, καθώς εις το να υπακούωμεν της φωνής του Κυρίου; ιδού, η υποταγή είναι καλητέρα παρά την θυσίαν· η υπακοή, παρά το πάχος των κριών· 23διότι η απείθεια είναι καθώς το αμάρτημα της μαγείας· και το πείσμα, καθώς η ασέβεια και ειδωλολατρεία· επειδή συ απέρριψας τον λόγον του Κυρίου, διά τούτο και αυτός απέρριψε σε από του να ήσαι βασιλεύς. 24Και είπεν ο Σαούλ προς τον Σαμουήλ, Ημάρτησα· διότι παρέβην το πρόσταγμα του Κυρίου και τους λόγους σου, φοβηθείς τον λαόν και υπακούσας εις την φωνήν αυτών· 25τώρα λοιπόν συγχώρησον, παρακαλώ, το αμάρτημά μου και επίστρεψον μετ' εμού, διά να προσκυνήσω τον Κύριον. 26Ο δε Σαμουήλ είπε προς τον Σαούλ, Δεν θέλω επιστρέψει μετά σού· διότι απέρριψας τον λόγον του Κυρίου, και ο Κύριος απέρριψε σε από του να ήσαι βασιλεύς επί τον Ισραήλ. 27Και καθώς εστράφη ο Σαμουήλ διά να αναχωρήση, εκείνος επίασεν αυτόν από του κρασπέδου του ιματίου αυτού· και εξεσχίσθη. 28Και είπε προς αυτόν ο Σαμουήλ, Εξέσχισεν η Κύριος την βασιλείαν του Ισραήλ από σου σήμερον και έδωκεν αυτήν εις τον πλησίον σου, τον καλήτερόν σου· 29ουδέ θέλει ψευσθή ο Ισχυρός του Ισραήλ ουδέ μεταμεληθή· διότι ούτος δεν είναι άνθρωπος, ώστε να μεταμεληθή. 30Ο δε είπεν, Ημάρτησα· αλλά τίμησόν με τώρα, παρακαλώ, έμπροσθεν των πρεσβυτέρων του λαού μου και έμπροσθεν του Ισραήλ, και επίστρεψον μετ' εμού, διά να προσκυνήσω Κύριον τον Θεόν σου. 31Και επέστρεψεν ο Σαμουήλ κατόπιν του Σαούλ και προσεκύνησεν ο Σαούλ τον Κύριον. 32Τότε είπεν ο Σαμουήλ, Φέρετέ μοι ενταύθα Αγάγ τον βασιλέα των Αμαληκιτών. Και ήλθε προς αυτόν ο Αγάγ χαριέντως· διότι έλεγεν ο Αγάγ, Βεβαίως η πικρία του θανάτου επέρασεν. 33Ο δε Σαμουήλ είπε, Καθώς ητέκνωσε γυναίκας η ρομφαία σου, ούτω θέλει ατεκνωθή μεταξύ των γυναικών η μήτηρ σου. Και κατέκοψεν ο Σαμουήλ τον Αγάγ ενώπιον του Κυρίου εν Γαλγάλοις. 34Τότε ανεχώρησεν ο Σαμουήλ εις Ραμά· ο δε Σαούλ ανέβη εις τον οίκον αυτού, εις Γαβαά Σαούλ. 35Ο δε Σαμουήλ δεν είδε πλέον τον Σαούλ έως της ημέρας του θανάτου αυτού· επένθησεν όμως ο Σαμουήλ διά τον Σαούλ. Και ο Κύριος μετεμελήθη ότι έκαμε τον Σαούλ βασιλέα επί τον Ισραήλ.
1Samuel said to Saul, “Yahweh sent me to anoint you to be king over his people, over Israel. Now therefore listen to the voice of Yahweh’s words. 2Thus says Yahweh of Armies, ‘I have marked that which Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him on the way, when he came up out of Egypt. 3Now go and strike Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and don’t spare them; but kill both man and woman, infant and nursing baby, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’” 4Saul summoned the people, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah. 5Saul came to the city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley. 6Saul said to the Kenites, “Go, depart, go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for you showed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. 7Saul struck the Amalekites, from Havilah as you go to Shur, that is before Egypt. 8He took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. 9But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the cattle, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and wouldn’t utterly destroy them: but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly. 10Then Yahweh’s word came to Samuel, saying, 11“It grieves me that I have set up Saul to be king; for he is turned back from following me, and has not performed my commandments.” Samuel was angry; and he cried to Yahweh all night. 12Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning; and it was told Samuel, saying, “Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself, and turned, and passed on, and went down to Gilgal.” 13Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said to him, “You are blessed by Yahweh! I have performed the commandment of Yahweh.” 14Samuel said, “Then what does this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the cattle which I hear mean?” 15Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the cattle, to sacrifice to Yahweh your God. We have utterly destroyed the rest.” 16Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stay, and I will tell you what Yahweh has said to me last night.” He said to him, “Say on.” 17Samuel said, “Though you were little in your own sight, weren’t you made the head of the tribes of Israel? Yahweh anointed you king over Israel; 18and Yahweh sent you on a journey, and said, ‘Go, and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’ 19Why then didn’t you obey the voice of Yahweh, but took the plunder, and did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh?” 20Saul said to Samuel, “But I have obeyed the voice of Yahweh, and have gone the way which Yahweh sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. 21But the people took of the plunder, sheep and cattle, the chief of the devoted things, to sacrifice to Yahweh your God in Gilgal.” 22Samuel said, “Has Yahweh as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of Yahweh? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. 23For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because you have rejected Yahweh’s word, he has also rejected you from being king.” 24Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of Yahweh, and your words, because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. 25Now therefore, please pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship Yahweh.” 26Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you; for you have rejected Yahweh’s word, and Yahweh has rejected you from being king over Israel.” 27As Samuel turned about to go away, Saul grabbed the skirt of his robe, and it tore. 28Samuel said to him, “Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it to a neighbor of yours who is better than you. 29Also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent.” 30Then he said, “I have sinned: yet please honor me now before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and come back with me, that I may worship Yahweh your God.” 31So Samuel went back with Saul; and Saul worshiped Yahweh. 32Then Samuel said, “Bring here to me Agag the king of the Amalekites!” Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.” 33Samuel said, “As your sword has made women childless, so your mother will be childless among women!” Samuel cut Agag in pieces before Yahweh in Gilgal. 34Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul. 35Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death; for Samuel mourned for Saul: and Yahweh grieved that he had made Saul king over Israel.

Toen ontstak Samuel, en hij riep tot den HEERE den gansen nacht. 12Daarna maakte zich Samuel des morgens vroeg op, Saul tegemoet; en het werd Samuel geboodschapt, zeggende: Saul is te Karmel gekomen, en zie, hij heeft zich een pilaar gesteld; daarna is hij omgetogen, en doorgetrokken, en naar Gilgal afgekomen. 13Samuel nu kwam tot Saul, en Saul zeide tot hem: Gezegend zijt gij den HEERE! Ik heb des HEEREN woord bevestigd. 14Toen zeide Samuel: Wat is dan dit voor een stem der schapen in mijn oren, en een stem der runderen, die ik hoor? 15Saul nu zeide: Zij hebben ze van de Amalekieten gebracht, want het volk heeft de beste schapen en runderen verschoond, om den HEERE, uw God, te offeren; maar het overige hebben wij verbannen. 16Toen zeide Samuel tot Saul: Houd op, zo zal ik u te kennen geven, wat de HEERE van nacht tot mij gesproken heeft. Hij dan zeide tot hem: Spreek. 17En Samuel zeide: Is het niet alzo, toen gij klein waart in uw ogen, dat gij het hoofd der stammen van Israel geworden zijt, en dat u de HEERE tot koning over Israel gezalfd heeft? 18En de HEERE heeft u op den weg gezonden, en gezegd: Ga heen en verban de zondaars, de Amalekieten, en strijd tegen hen, totdat gij dezelve te niet doet. 19Waarom toch hebt gij naar de stem des HEEREN niet gehoord, maar zijt tot den roof gevlogen, en hebt gedaan dat kwaad was in de ogen des HEEREN? 20Toen zeide Saul tot Samuel: Ik heb immers naar de stem des HEEREN gehoord, en heb gewandeld op den weg, op denwelken mij de HEERE gezonden heeft; en ik heb Agag, den koning der Amalekieten, mede gebracht, maar de Amalekieten heb ik verbannen. 21Het volk nu heeft genomen van den roof, schapen en runderen, het voornaamste van het verbannene, om den HEERE, uw God, op te offeren te Gilgal. 22Doch Samuel zeide: Heeft de HEERE lust aan brandofferen, en slachtofferen, als aan het gehoorzamen van de stem des HEEREN? Zie, gehoorzamen is beter dan slachtoffer, opmerken dan het vette der rammen. 23Want wederspannigheid is een zonde der toverij, en wederstreven is afgoderij en beeldendienst. Omdat gij des HEEREN woord verworpen hebt, zo heeft Hij u verworpen, dat gij geen koning zult zijn. 24Toen zeide Saul tot Samuel: Ik heb gezondigd, omdat ik des HEEREN bevel en uw woorden overtreden heb; want ik heb het volk gevreesd en naar hun stem gehoord. 25Nu dan, vergeef mij toch mijn zonde, en keer met mij wederom, dat ik den HEERE aanbidde. 26Doch Samuel zeide tot Saul: Ik zal met u niet wederkeren; omdat gij het woord des HEEREN verworpen hebt, zo heeft u de HEERE verworpen, dat gij geen koning over Israel zult zijn. 27Als zich Samuel omkeerde om weg te gaan, zo greep hij een slip van zijn mantel en zij scheurde. 28Toen zeide Samuel tot hem: De HEERE heeft heden het koninkrijk van Israel van u afgescheurd, en heeft het aan uw naaste gegeven, die beter is dan gij. 29En ook liegt Hij, Die de Overwinning van Israel is, niet, en het berouwt Hem niet; want Hij is geen mens, dat Hem iets berouwen zou. 30Hij dan zeide: Ik heb gezondigd; eer mij toch nu voor de oudsten mijns volks, en voor Israel; en keer wederom met mij, dat ik den HEERE, uw God, aanbidde. 31Toen keerde Samuel wederom Saul na; en Saul aanbad den HEERE. 32Toen zeide Samuel: Breng Agag, den koning der Amalekieten, hier tot mij; Agag nu ging tot hem weeldelijk; en Agag zeide: Voorwaar, de bitterheid des doods is geweken! 33Maar Samuel zeide: Gelijk als uw zwaard de vrouwen van haar kinderen beroofd heeft, alzo zal uw moeder van haar kinderen beroofd worden onder de vrouwen. Toen hieuw Samuel Agag in stukken, voor het aangezicht des HEEREN te Gilgal. 34Daarna ging Samuel naar Rama; en Saul ging op naar zijn huis te Gibea-Sauls. 35En Samuel zag Saul niet meer tot den dag zijns doods toe; evenwel droeg Samuel leed om Saul; en het berouwde den HEERE, dat Hij Saul tot koning over Israel gemaakt had.
