1Ο Σαούλ ήτο βασιλεύς ενός έτους· αφού δε εβασίλευσε δύο έτη επί τον Ισραήλ, 2εξέλεξεν ο Σαούλ εις εαυτόν τρεις χιλιάδας εκ του Ισραήλ· και ήσαν μετά του Σαούλ δύο χιλιάδες εν Μιχμάς και εν τω όρει Βαιθήλ, και χίλιοι ήσαν μετά του Ιωνάθαν εν Γαβαά του Βενιαμίν· το δε υπόλοιπον του λαού εξαπέστειλεν έκαστον εις την σκηνήν αυτού. 3Και επάταξεν ο Ιωνάθαν την φρουράν των Φιλισταίων την εν τω βουνώ· και ήκουσαν οι Φιλισταίοι. Και εσάλπισεν ο Σαούλ διά της σάλπιγγος εν πάση τη γη, λέγων, Ας ακούσωσιν οι Εβραίοι. 4Και πας ο Ισραήλ ήκουσε να λέγωσιν, Επάταξεν ο Σαούλ την φρουράν των Φιλισταίων, και μάλιστα ο Ισραήλ μισείται υπό των Φιλισταίων. Και συνήχθη ο λαός κατόπιν του Σαούλ εν Γαλγάλοις. 5Οι δε Φιλισταίοι συνηθροίσθησαν διά να πολεμήσωσι μετά του Ισραήλ, τριάκοντα χιλιάδες αμαξών και εξ χιλιάδες ιππέων και λαός ως η άμμος η επί του χείλους της θαλάσσης κατά το πλήθος· και ανέβησαν και εστρατοπέδευσαν εν Μιχμάς, προς ανατολάς της Βαιθ-αυέν. 6Ότε οι άνδρες του Ισραήλ είδον ότι ήσαν εν αμηχανία, διότι ο λαός εμικροψύχει, τότε εκρύπτετο ο λαός εις τα σπήλαια και εις τα πυκνόφυτα και εις τους βράχους και εις τα οχυρά μέρη και εις τους λάκκους. 7Και τινές εκ των Εβραίων διέβησαν τον Ιορδάνην προς την γην Γαδ και Γαλαάδ. Ο δε Σαούλ αυτός ήτο ακόμη εν Γαλγάλοις· και πας ο λαός τρέμων κατόπιν αυτού. 8Και περιέμεινεν επτά ημέρας, κατά τον διωρισμένον καιρόν υπό του Σαμουήλ· αλλ' ο Σαμουήλ δεν ήρχετο εις Γάλγαλα· και ο λαός διεσκορπίζετο από πλησίον αυτού. 9Και είπεν ο Σαούλ, Φέρετε εδώ προς εμέ το ολοκαύτωμα, και τας ειρηνικάς προσφοράς. Και προσέφερε το ολοκαύτωμα. 10Και ως ετελείωσε προσφέρων το ολοκαύτωμα, ιδού, ήλθεν ο Σαμουήλ· και εξήλθεν ο Σαούλ εις συνάντησιν αυτού, διά να χαιρετήση αυτόν. 11Και είπεν ο Σαμουήλ, Τι έκαμες; Και απεκρίθη ο Σαούλ, Επειδή είδον ότι ο λαός διεσκορπίζετο απ' εμού, και συ δεν ήλθες την διωρισμένην ημέραν, οι δε Φιλισταίοι συνηθροίζοντο εις Μιχμάς, 12διά τούτο είπα, Τώρα θέλουσι καταβή οι Φιλισταίοι εναντίον μου εις Γάλγαλα, και εγώ δεν έκαμα δέησιν προς τον Κύριον· ετόλμησα λοιπόν, και προσέφερα το ολοκαύτωμα. 13Και είπεν ο Σαμουήλ προς τον Σαούλ, Συ έπραξας αφρόνως· δεν εφύλαξας το πρόσταγμα Κυρίου του Θεού σου, το οποίον προσέταξεν εις σέ· διότι τώρα ο Κύριος ήθελε στερεώσει την βασιλείαν σου επί τον Ισραήλ έως του αιώνος· 14αλλά τώρα η βασιλεία σου δεν θέλει στηριχθή· ο Κύριος εζήτησεν εις εαυτόν άνθρωπον κατά την καρδίαν αυτού, και διώρισεν ο Κύριος αυτόν να ήναι άρχων επί τον λαόν αυτού, επειδή δεν εφύλαξας εκείνο το οποίον προσέταξεν εις σε ο Κύριος. 15Και εσηκώθη ο Σαμουήλ και ανέβη από Γαλγάλων εις Γαβαά του Βενιαμίν. Ο δε Σαούλ ηρίθμησε τον λαόν τον ευρεθέντα μετ' αυτού, περίπου εξακοσίους άνδρας. 16Και ο Σαούλ και Ιωνάθαν ο υιός αυτού και ο λαός ο ευρεθείς μετ' αυτών, εκάθηντο εν Γαβαά του Βενιαμίν· οι δε Φιλισταίοι ήσαν εστρατοπεδευμένοι εν Μιχμάς. 17Και εξήλθον λεηλάται εκ του στρατοπέδου των Φιλισταίων εις τρία σώματα· το εν σώμα εστράφη εις την οδόν Οφρά, προς την γην Σωγάλ· 18και το άλλο σώμα εστράφη εις την οδόν Βαιθ-ωρών· και το άλλο σώμα εστράφη εις την οδόν του ορίου, το οποίον βλέπει προς την κοιλάδα Σεβωείμ, κατά την έρημον. 19Και σιδηρουργός δεν ευρίσκετο εν πάση τη γη Ισραήλ· διότι οι Φιλισταίοι είπον, Μήποτε οι Εβραίοι κατασκευάσωσι ρομφαίας ή λόγχας· 20αλλά κατέβαινον πάντες οι Ισραηλίται προς τους Φιλισταίους, διά να ακονώσιν έκαστος το υνίον αυτού και την δικέλλαν αυτού και την αξίνην αυτού, και την σκαπάνην αυτού, 21οσάκις ήθελον αμβλυνθή αι σκαπάναι και αι δικέλλαι και τα τρίκρανα και αι αξίναι αυτών· και διά να οξύνωσι τα βούκεντρα αυτών. 22Διά τούτο εν τη ημέρα της μάχης, δεν ευρίσκετο ούτε μάχαιρα ούτε λόγχη εις την χείρα τινός εκ του λαού του όντος μετά του Σαούλ και Ιωνάθαν· εις τον Σαούλ όμως και εις τον Ιωνάθαν τον υιόν αυτού ευρέθησαν. 23Η δε φρουρά των Φιλισταίων εξήλθε προς το πέρασμα Μιχμάς.
1Saul reigned a year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel, 2Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel, of which two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the Mount of Bethel, and one thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent. 3Jonathan struck the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba: and the Philistines heard of it. Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear!” 4All Israel heard that Saul had struck the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel was had in abomination with the Philistines. The people were gathered together after Saul to Gilgal. 5The Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude: and they came up, and encamped in Michmash, eastward of Beth Aven. 6When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in coverts, and in pits. 7Now some of the Hebrews had gone over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; but as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling. 8He stayed seven days, according to the time set by Samuel: but Samuel didn’t come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. 9Saul said, “Bring here the burnt offering to me, and the peace offerings.” He offered the burnt offering. 10It came to pass that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might greet him. 11Samuel said, “What have you done?” Saul said, “Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you didn’t come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines assembled themselves together at Michmash; 12therefore I said, ‘Now the Philistines will come down on me to Gilgal, and I haven’t entreated the favor of Yahweh.’ I forced myself therefore, and offered the burnt offering.” 13Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of Yahweh your God, which he commanded you; for now Yahweh would have established your kingdom on Israel forever. 14But now your kingdom shall not continue. Yahweh has sought for himself a man after his own heart, and Yahweh has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept that which Yahweh commanded you.” 15Samuel arose, and went from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. Saul numbered the people who were present with him, about six hundred men. 16Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people who were present with them, stayed in Geba of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash. 17The raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned to the way that leads to Ophrah, to the land of Shual; 18and another company turned the way to Beth Horon; and another company turned the way of the border that looks down on the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness. 19Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel; for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears”; 20but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his plowshare, mattock, ax, and sickle; 21yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the plowshares, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to set the goads. 22So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found. 23The garrison of the Philistines went out to the pass of Michmash.

Toen werd het volk samengeroepen achter Saul, naar Gil-gal. 5En de Filistijnen werden verzameld om te strijden tegen Israel, dertig duizend wagens, en zes duizend ruiters, en volk in menigte als het zand, dat aan den oever der zee is; en zij togen op, en legerden zich te Michmas, tegen het oosten van Beth-Aven. 6Toen de mannen van Israel zagen, dat zij in nood waren (want het volk was benauwd), zo verborg zich het volk in de spelonken, en in de doornbossen, en in de steenklippen, en in de vestingen, en in de putten. 7De Hebreen nu gingen over de Jordaan in het land van Gad en Gilead. Toen Saul nog zelf te Gilgal was, zo kwam al het volk bevende achter hem. 8En hij vertoefde zeven dagen, tot den tijd, dien Samuel bestemd had. Als Samuel te Gilgal niet opkwam, zo verstrooide het volk van hem. 9Toen zeide Saul: Brengt tot mij herwaarts een brandoffer, en dankofferen; en hij offerde brandoffer. 10En het geschiedde, toen hij geeindigd had het brandoffer te offeren, ziet, zo kwam Samuel; en Saul ging uit hem tegemoet, om hem te zegenen. 11Toen zeide Samuel: Wat hebt gij gedaan? Saul nu zeide: Omdat ik zag, dat zich het volk van mij verstrooide, en gij op den bestemden tijd der dagen niet kwaamt, en de Filistijnen te Michmas vergaderd waren, 12Zo zeide ik: Nu zullen de Filistijnen tot mij afkomen te Gilgal, en ik heb het aangezicht des HEEREN niet ernstelijk aangebeden, zo dwong ik mijzelven, en heb brandoffer geofferd. 13Toen zeide Samuel tot Saul: Gij hebt zottelijk gedaan; gij hebt het gebod van den HEERE, uw God, niet gehouden, dat Hij u geboden heeft; want de HEERE zou nu uw rijk over Israel bevestigd hebben tot in eeuwigheid. 14Maar nu zal uw rijk niet bestaan. De HEERE heeft Zich een man gezocht naar Zijn hart, en de HEERE heeft hem geboden een voorganger te zijn over Zijn volk, omdat gij niet gehouden hebt, wat u de HEERE geboden had. 15Toen maakte zich Samuel op, en hij ging op van Gilgal naar Gibea-Benjamins; en Saul telde het volk, dat bij hem gevonden werd, omtrent zeshonderd man. 16En Saul en zijn zoon Jonathan, en het volk, dat bij hen gevonden was, bleven te Gibea-Benjamins; maar de Filistijnen waren te Michmas gelegerd. 17En de verdervers gingen uit het leger der Filistijnen, in drie hopen; de ene hoop keerde zich op den weg naar Ofra, naar het land Sual; 18En een hoop keerde zich naar den weg van Beth-horon; en een hoop keerde zich naar den weg der landpale, die naar het dal Zeboim naar de woestijn uitziet. 19En er werd geen smid gevonden in het ganse land van Israel; want de Filistijnen hadden gezegd: Opdat de Hebreen geen zwaard noch spies maken. 20Daarom moest gans Israel tot de Filistijnen aftrekken, opdat een iegelijk zijn ploegijzer, of zijn spade, of zijn bijl, of zijn houweel scherpen liet. 21Maar zij hadden tandige vijlen tot hun houwelen, en tot hun spaden, en tot de drietandige vorken, en tot de bijlen, en tot het stellen der prikkelen. 22En het geschiedde ten dage des strijds, dat er geen zwaard noch spies gevonden werd in de hand van het ganse volk, dat bij Saul en bij Jonathan was; doch bij Saul en bij Jonathan, zijn zoon, werden zij gevonden. 23En der Filistijnen leger toog naar den doortocht van Michmas.
