1Ημέραν δε τινά είπεν Ιωνάθαν, ο υιός του Σαούλ, προς τον νέον τον βαστάζοντα τα όπλα αυτού, Ελθέ, και ας περάσωμεν προς την φρουράν των Φιλισταίων, την εν τω πέραν· προς τον πατέρα αυτού όμως δεν εφανέρωσε τούτο. 2Ο δε Σαούλ εκάθητο επί του άκρου του Γαβαά, υπό την ροδιάν την εν Μιγρών· και ο λαός ο μετ' αυτού ήτο έως εξακόσιοι άνδρες· 3και Αχιά, ο υιός του Αχιτώβ, αδελφού του Ιχαβώδ, υιού του Φινεές, υιού του Ηλεί, ιερεύς του Κυρίου εν Σηλώ, φορών εφόδ. Και ο λαός δεν ήξευρεν ότι υπήγεν ο Ιωνάθαν. 4Μεταξύ δε των διαβάσεων, διά των οποίων ο Ιωνάθαν εζήτει να περάση προς την φρουράν των Φιλισταίων, ήτο απότομος βράχος εξ ενός μέρους και απότομος βράχος εκ του άλλου μέρους· και το όνομα του ενός Βοσές, το δε όνομα του άλλον Σενέ. 5Το μέτωπον του ενός βράχου ήτο προς βορράν απέναντι Μιχμάς, και το του άλλου προς νότον απέναντι Γαβαά. 6Και είπεν ο Ιωνάθαν προς τον νέον τον βαστάζοντα τα όπλα αυτού, Ελθέ, και ας περάσωμεν προς την φρουράν των απεριτμήτων τούτων· ίσως ενεργήση ο Κύριος υπέρ ημών· διότι δεν είναι εις τον Κύριον εμπόδιον να σώση διά πολλών ή δι' ολίγων. 7Και είπε προς αυτόν ο οπλοφόρος αυτού, Κάμε ό,τι είναι εν τη καρδία σου· προχώρει· ιδού, εγώ είμαι μετά σου κατά την καρδίαν σου. 8Τότε είπεν ο Ιωνάθαν, Ιδού, ημείς θέλομεν περάσει προς τους άνδρας και θέλομεν δειχθή εις αυτούς· 9εάν είπωσι προς ημάς ούτω, Στάθητε έως να έλθωμεν προς εσάς· τότε θέλομεν σταθή εν τω τόπω ημών και δεν θέλομεν αναβή προς αυτούς· 10αλλ' εάν είπωσιν ούτως, Ανάβητε προς ημάς· τότε θέλομεν αναβή· διότι ο Κύριος παρέδωκεν αυτούς εις την χείρα ημών· και τούτο θέλει είσθαι εις ημάς το σημείον. 11Εδείχθησαν λοιπόν αμφότεροι εις την φρουράν των Φιλισταίων· και οι Φιλισταίοι είπον, Ιδού, οι Εβραίοι εξέρχονται εκ των τρυπών, όπου είχον κρυφθή. 12Και ελάλησαν οι άνδρες της φρουράς προς τον Ιωνάθαν και προς τον βαστάζοντα τα όπλα αυτού, και είπον, Ανάβητε προς ημάς, και θέλομεν σας φανερώσει τι. Και είπεν ο Ιωνάθαν προς τον οπλοφόρον αυτού, Ανάβα κατόπιν μου· διότι παρέδωκεν αυτούς ο Κύριος εις την χείρα του Ισραήλ. 13Και ανέρπυσεν ο Ιωνάθαν με τας χείρας αυτού και με τους πόδας αυτού, και ο βαστάζων τα όπλα αυτού κατόπιν αυτού· και έπεσον έμπροσθεν του Ιωνάθαν· και ο βαστάζων τα όπλα αυτού εθανάτονεν αυτούς κατόπιν αυτού. 14Αύτη δε η πρώτη σφαγή, την οποίαν έκαμον ο Ιωνάθαν και ο οπλοφόρος αυτού, ήτο περίπου είκοσι άνδρες, εις διάστημα γης ημίσεως στρέμματος. 15Και έγεινε τρόμος εν τω στρατοπέδω, εν τοις αγροίς και εν παντί τω λαώ· η φρουρά και οι λεηλατούντες, και αυτοί κατετρόμαξαν, και η γη συνεταράχθη· ώστε ήτο ως τρόμος Θεού. 16Και είδον οι φρουροί του Σαούλ εν Γαβαά του Βενιαμίν, και ιδού, το πλήθος διελύετο και βαθμηδόν διεσκορπίζετο. 17Τότε είπεν ο Σαούλ προς τον λαόν τον μετ' αυτού, Απαριθμήσατε τώρα και ιδέτε τις ανεχώρησεν εξ ημών. Και ότε απηρίθμησαν, ιδού, ο Ιωνάθαν και ο οπλοφόρος αυτού δεν ήσαν. 18Και είπεν ο Σαούλ προς τον Αχιά, Φέρε εδώ την κιβωτόν του Θεού. Διότι η κιβωτός του Θεού ήτο τότε μετά των υιών Ισραήλ. 19Και ενώ ελάλει ο Σαούλ προς τον ιερέα, ο θόρυβος εν τω στρατοπέδω των Φιλισταίων επροχώρει επί το μάλλον και επληθύνετο· ο δε Σαούλ είπε προς τον ιερέα, Σύρε οπίσω την χείρα σου. 20Και συνηθροίσθησαν ο Σαούλ και πας ο λαός ο μετ' αυτού και ήλθον έως εις την μάχην· και ιδού, παντός ανδρός η ρομφαία ήτο εναντίον του συντρόφου αυτού, σφαγή μεγάλη σφόδρα. 21οι δε Εβραίοι οι μετά των Φιλισταίων όντες ως άλλοτε, οίτινες είχον αναβή μετ' αυτών εις το στρατόπεδον εκ των πέριξ, και αυτοί έτι ηνώθησαν μετά των Ισραηλιτών, οίτινες ήσαν μετά του Σαούλ και Ιωνάθαν. 22Και πάντες οι άνδρες του Ισραήλ οι κρυπτόμενοι εν τω όρει Εφραΐμ, ακούσαντες ότι οι Φιλισταίοι έφευγον, έδραμον και αυτοί κατόπιν αυτών εις πόλεμον. 23Και έσωσεν ο Κύριος τον Ισραήλ εν τη ημέρα εκείνη· και η μάχη επέρασεν εις Βαιθ-αυέν. 24Οι δε άνδρες του Ισραήλ απέκαμον την ημέραν εκείνην· διότι ο Σαούλ είχεν ορκίσει τον λαόν, λέγων, Επικατάρατος ο άνθρωπος, όστις φάγη τροφήν έως εσπέρας, και εκδικηθώ από των εχθρών μου. Όθεν δεν εγεύθη τροφήν πας ο λαός. 25Και παν το πλήθος ήλθεν εις δάσος, όπου ήτο μέλι κατά γης. 26Και ότε εισήλθεν ο λαός εις το δάσος, ιδού, το μέλι εστάλαξεν· ουδείς όμως επλησίασε την χείρα αυτού εις το στόμα αυτού· διότι εφοβήθη ο λαός τον όρκον. 27Ο Ιωνάθαν όμως δεν είχεν ακούσει, ότε ο πατήρ αυτού ώρκισε τον λαόν· όθεν ήπλωσε το άκρον της ράβδου της εν τη χειρί αυτού και εβύθισεν αυτό εις κηρήθραν και έβαλε την χείρα αυτού εις το στόμα αυτού, και ανέβλεψαν οι οφθαλμοί αυτού. 28Απεκρίθη δε εις εκ του λαού και είπεν, Ο πατήρ σου ώρκισε δι' όρκου τον λαόν, λέγων, Επικατάρατος ο άνθρωπος, όστις φάγη τροφήν σήμερον· διά τούτο ο λαός είναι εκλελυμένος. 29Ο δε Ιωνάθαν είπεν, Ετάραξεν ο πατήρ μου τον κόσμον· ιδέτε, παρακαλώ, πόσον ανέβλεψαν οι οφθαλμοί μου, διότι εγεύθην ολίγον εκ τούτου του μέλιτος· 30πόσω μάλλον, εάν ο λαός ήθελε φάγει την σήμερον ελευθέρως εκ των λαφύρων των εχθρών αυτού, τα οποία εύρηκε; διότι δεν ήθελε γείνει τώρα πολύ μεγαλητέρα σφαγή μεταξύ των Φιλισταίων; 31Επάταξαν δε εν εκείνη τη ημέρα τους Φιλισταίους από Μιχμάς έως Αιαλών· και ο λαός ήτο εκλελυμένος σφόδρα. 32Όθεν ερρίφθη ο λαός εις τα λάφυρα, και έλαβε πρόβατα και βόας και μόσχους και έσφαξαν κατά γής· και έτρωγεν ο λαός μετά του αίματος. 33Ανήγγειλαν δε προς τον Σαούλ, λέγοντες, Ιδού, ο λαός αμαρτάνει εις τον Κύριον, διότι τρώγουσι μετά του αίματος. Και είπε, Παραβάται εστάθητε· κυλίσατε προς εμέ σήμερον λίθον μέγαν. 34Και είπεν ο Σαούλ, Διασπάρθητε μεταξύ του λαού και είπατε προς αυτούς, Φέρετέ μοι ενταύθα έκαστος τον βουν αυτού και έκαστος το πρόβατον αυτού, και σφάξατε ενταύθα και φάγετε· και μη αμαρτάνετε εις τον Κύριον, τρώγοντες μετά του αίματος. Και έφεραν πας ο λαός έκαστος τον βουν αυτού μεθ' εαυτού εκείνην την νύκτα και έσφαξαν εκεί. 35Και ωκοδόμησεν ο Σαούλ θυσιαστήριον εις τον Κύριον· τούτο ήτο το πρώτον θυσιαστήριον, το οποίον ωκοδόμησεν ο Σαούλ εις τον Κύριον. 36Και είπεν ο Σαούλ, Ας καταβώμεν εξοπίσω των Φιλισταίων διά νυκτός, και ας διαρπάσωμεν αυτούς έως να φέγξη η ημέρα, και ας μη αφήσωμεν μηδέ ένα εξ αυτών. Και είπον, Κάμε παν ό,τι σοι φαίνεται καλόν. Τότε είπεν ο ιερεύς, Ας προσέλθωμεν ενταύθα εις τον Θεόν. 37Και ηρώτησεν ο Σαούλ τον Θεόν, Να καταβώ εξοπίσω των Φιλισταίων; θέλεις παραδώσει αυτούς εις την χείρα του Ισραήλ; Αλλά δεν απεκρίθη προς αυτόν την ημέραν εκείνην. 38Και είπεν ο Σαούλ, Πλησιάσατε ενταύθα πάντες οι αρχηγοί του λαού· και μάθετε και ιδέτε, εις ποίον εστάθη η αμαρτία αύτη σήμερον· 39διότι ζη Κύριος, ο σώσας τον Ισραήλ, ότι και εις τον Ιωνάθαν τον υιόν μου αν εστάθη, θέλει βεβαίως θανατωθή. Και δεν ευρέθη ουδείς μεταξύ παντός του λαού, όστις απεκρίθη προς αυτόν. 40Και είπε προς πάντα τον Ισραήλ, Σταθήτε σεις εκ του ενός μέρους, εγώ δε και Ιωνάθαν ο υιός μου θέλομεν σταθή εκ του άλλου μέρους. Και είπεν ο λαός προς τον Σαούλ, Κάμε παν ό,τι σοι φαίνεται καλόν. 41Τότε είπεν ο Σαούλ προς τον Κύριον τον Θεόν του Ισραήλ, Δείξον τον αθώον. Και επιάσθη ο Ιωνάθαν και ο Σαούλ· ο δε λαός απελύθη. 42Και είπεν ο Σαούλ, Ρίψατε κλήρους μεταξύ εμού και Ιωνάθαν του υιού μου. Και επιάσθη ο Ιωνάθαν. 43Τότε είπεν ο Σαούλ προς τον Ιωνάθαν, Φανέρωσόν μοι τι έπραξας. Και εφανέρωσε προς αυτόν ο Ιωνάθαν, και είπε, Τωόντι εγεύθην ολίγον μέλι διά του άκρου της ράβδου της εν τη χειρί μου· ιδού, εγώ, αποθνήσκω. 44Και απεκρίθη ο Σαούλ, Ούτω να κάμη ο Θεός και ούτω να προσθέση· βεβαίως θέλεις αποθάνει, Ιωνάθαν. 45Ο δε λαός είπε προς τον Σαούλ, Ο Ιωνάθαν θέλει αποθάνει, όστις έκαμε την μεγάλην ταύτην σωτηρίαν εις τον Ισραήλ; Μη γένοιτο· Ζη Κύριος, ουδέ μία θριξ εκ της κεφαλής αυτού θέλει πέσει εις την γήν· διότι ενήργησε μετά του Θεού την ημέραν ταύτην. Και ελύτρωσεν ο λαός τον Ιωνάθαν, και δεν απέθανε. 46Τότε ανέβη ο Σαούλ εκ της καταδιώξεως των Φιλισταίων· και οι Φιλισταίοι υπήγαν εις τον τόπον αυτών. 47Και έλαβεν ο Σαούλ την βασιλείαν επί τον Ισραήλ, και επολέμησεν εναντίον πάντων των εχθρών αυτού κύκλω· εναντίον του Μωάβ και εναντίον των υιών του Αμμών και εναντίον του Εδώμ και εναντίον των βασιλέων της Σωβά και εναντίον των Φιλισταίων· και εναντίον πάντων όπου και αν εστρέφετο, κατετρόπονε. 48Συνεκρότησεν έτι δύναμιν και επάταξε τον Αμαλήκ, και ηλευθέρωσε τον Ισραήλ εκ χειρός των διαρπαζόντων αυτούς. 49Οι δε υιοί του Σαούλ ήσαν Ιωνάθαν και Ισονεί και Μελχί-σουέ· και τα ονόματα των δύο θυγατέρων αυτού, το όνομα της πρωτοτόκου Μεράβ, και το όνομα της νεωτέρας Μιχάλ· 50το δε όνομα της γυναικός του Σαούλ ήτο Αχινοάμ, θυγάτηρ του Αχιμάας. Και το όνομα του αρχιστρατήγου αυτού Αβενήρ, υιός του Νηρ, θείου του Σαούλ. 51Ο δε Κείς ο πατήρ του Σαούλ, και ο Νηρ ο πατήρ του Αβενήρ, ήσαν υιοί του Αβιήλ. 52Ήτο δε πόλεμος δυνατός εναντίον των Φιλισταίων κατά πάσας τας ημέρας του Σαούλ· και οπότε έβλεπεν ο Σαούλ άνδρα τινά δυνατόν ή άνδρείον, παρελάμβανεν αυτόν πλησίον εαυτού.
1Now it fell on a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on the other side.” But he didn’t tell his father. 2Saul stayed in the uttermost part of Gibeah under the pomegranate tree which is in Migron: and the people who were with him were about six hundred men; 3and Ahijah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the priest of Yahweh in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. The people didn’t know that Jonathan was gone. 4Between the passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistines’ garrison, there was a rocky crag on the one side, and a rocky crag on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh. 5The one crag rose up on the north in front of Michmash, and the other on the south in front of Geba. 6Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, and let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that Yahweh will work for us; for there is no restraint on Yahweh to save by many or by few.” 7His armor bearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Turn and, behold, I am with you according to your heart.” 8Then Jonathan said, “Behold, we will pass over to the men, and we will reveal ourselves to them. 9If they say thus to us, ‘Wait until we come to you!’ then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up to them. 10But if they say this, ‘Come up to us!’ then we will go up; for Yahweh has delivered them into our hand. This shall be the sign to us.” 11Both of them revealed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, “Behold, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they had hidden themselves!” 12The men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armor bearer, and said, “Come up to us, and we will show you something!” Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “Come up after me; for Yahweh has delivered them into the hand of Israel.” 13Jonathan climbed up on his hands and on his feet, and his armor bearer after him: and they fell before Jonathan; and his armor bearer killed them after him. 14That first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armor bearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were half a furrow’s length in an acre of land. 15There was a trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people; the garrison, and the raiders, they also trembled; and the earth quaked: so there was an exceeding great trembling. 16The watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and behold, the multitude melted away, and scattered. 17Then Saul said to the people who were with him, “Count now, and see who is missing from us.” When they had counted, behold, Jonathan and his armor bearer were not there. 18Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the ark of God here.” For the ark of God was with the children of Israel at that time. 19While Saul talked to the priest, the tumult that was in the camp of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand!” 20Saul and all the people who were with him were gathered together, and came to the battle: and behold, every man’s sword was against his fellow: a very great confusion. 21Now the Hebrews who were with the Philistines as before, and who went up with them into the camp, from all around, even they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan. 22Likewise all the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle. 23So Yahweh saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over by Beth Aven. 24The men of Israel were distressed that day; for Saul had adjured the people, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats any food until it is evening, and I am avenged of my enemies.” So none of the people tasted food. 25All the people came into the forest; and there was honey on the ground. 26When the people had come to the forest, behold, the honey dropped: but no man put his hand to his mouth; for the people feared the oath. 27But Jonathan didn’t hear when his father commanded the people with the oath: therefore he put out the end of the rod who was in his hand, and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened. 28Then one of the people answered, and said, “Your father directly commanded the people with an oath, saying, ‘Cursed is the man who eats food this day.’” The people were faint. 29Then Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. Please look how my eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey. 30How much more, if perhaps the people had eaten freely today of the plunder of their enemies which they found? For now has there been no great slaughter among the Philistines.” 31They struck of the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. The people were very faint; 32and the people flew on the plunder, and took sheep, and cattle, and calves, and killed them on the ground; and the people ate them with the blood. 33Then they told Saul, saying, “Behold, the people are sinning against Yahweh, in that they eat meat with the blood.” He said, “You have dealt treacherously. Roll a large stone to me this day!” 34Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people, and tell them, ‘Bring me here every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and kill them here, and eat; and don’t sin against Yahweh in eating meat with the blood.’” All the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and killed them there. 35Saul built an altar to Yahweh. This was the first altar that he built to Yahweh. 36Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and take plunder among them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them.” They said, “Do whatever seems good to you.” Then the priest said, “Let us draw near here to God.” 37Saul asked counsel of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you deliver them into the hand of Israel?” But he didn’t answer him that day. 38Saul said, “Draw near here, all you chiefs of the people; and know and see in which this sin has been this day. 39For, as Yahweh lives, who saves Israel, though it is in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But there was not a man among all the people who answered him. 40Then he said to all Israel, “You be on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.” The people said to Saul, “Do what seems good to you.” 41Therefore Saul said to Yahweh, the God of Israel, “Show the right.” Jonathan and Saul were chosen; but the people escaped. 42Saul said, “Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son.” Jonathan was selected. 43Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done!” Jonathan told him, and said, “I certainly did taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand; and behold, I must die.” 44Saul said, “God do so and more also; for you shall surely die, Jonathan.” 45The people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! As Yahweh lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he has worked with God this day!” So the people rescued Jonathan, that he didn’t die. 46Then Saul went up from following the Philistines; and the Philistines went to their own place. 47Now when Saul had taken the kingdom over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and wherever he turned himself, he defeated them. 48He did valiantly, and struck the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of those who plundered them. 49Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishvi, and Malchishua; and the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal: 50and the name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the captain of his army was Abner the son of Ner, Saul’s uncle. 51Kish was the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel. 52There was severe war against the Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any mighty man, or any valiant man, he took him to him.
1Het geschiedde nu op een dag, dat Jonathan, de zoon van Saul, tot den jongen, die zijn wapenen droeg, zeide: Kom, en laat ons tot de bezetting der Filistijnen overgaan, welke aan gene zijde is; doch hij gaf het zijn vader niet te kennen. 2Saul nu zat aan het uiterste van Gibea onder den granatenboom, die te Migron was; en het volk, dat bij hem was, was omtrent zeshonderd man. 3En Ahia, de zoon van Ahitub, den broeder van Ikabod, den zoon van Pinehas, den zoon van Eli, was priester des HEEREN, te Silo, dragende den efod; doch het volk wist niet, dat Jonathan heengegaan was. 4Er was nu tussen de doortochten, waar Jonathan zocht door te gaan tot der Filistijnen bezetting, een scherpte van een steenklip aan deze zijde, en een scherpte van een steenklip aan gene zijde; en de naam der ene was Bozes, en de naam der andere Sene. 5De ene tand was gelegen tegen het noorden, tegenover Michmas, en de andere tegen het zuiden, tegenover Geba. 6Jonathan nu zeide tot den jongen, die zijn wapenen droeg: Kom, en laat ons tot de bezetting dezer onbesnedenen overgaan; misschien zal de HEERE voor ons werken; want bij den HEERE is geen verhindering, om te verlossen door velen of door weinigen. 7Toen zeide zijn wapendrager tot hem: Doe al, wat in uw hart is; wend u, zie ik ben met u, naar uw hart. 8Jonathan nu zeide: Zie, wij zullen overgaan tot die mannen, en wij zullen ons aan hen ontdekken. 9Indien zij aldus tot ons zeggen: Staat stil, totdat wij aan ulieden komen; zo zullen wij blijven staan aan onze plaats, en tot hen niet opklimmen. 10Maar zeggen zij aldus: Klimt tot ons op; zo zullen wij opklimmen, want de HEERE heeft hen in onze hand gegeven; en dit zal ons een teken zijn. 11Toen zij beiden zich aan der Filistijnen bezetting ontdekten, zo zeiden de Filistijnen: Ziet, de Hebreen zijn uit de holen uitgegaan, waarin zij zich verstoken hadden. 12Verder antwoordden de mannen der bezetting aan Jonathan en zijn wapendrager, en zeiden: Klimt op tot ons, en wij zullen het u wijs maken. En Jonathan zeide tot zijn wapendrager: Klim op achter mij, want de HEERE heeft hen gegeven in de hand van Israel. 13Toen klom Jonathan op zijn handen en op zijn voeten, en zijn wapendrager hem na; en zij vielen voor Jonathans aangezicht, en zijn wapendrager doodde ze achter hem. 14Deze eerste slag nu, waarmede Jonathan en zijn wapendrager omtrent twintig mannen versloegen, geschiedde omtrent in de helft eens bunders, zijnde een juk ossen lands. 15En er was een beving in het leger, op het veld en onder het ganse volk; de bezetting en de verdervers beefden ook zelven; ja, het land werd beroerd, want het was een beving Gods. 16Als nu de wachters van Saul te Gibea-Benjamins zagen, dat, ziet, de menigte versmolt, en doorging, en geklopt werd; 17Toen zeide Saul tot het volk, dat bij hem was: Telt toch, en beziet, wie van ons weggegaan zijn. En zij telden, en ziet, Jonathan en zijn wapendrager waren daar niet. 18Toen zeide Saul tot Ahia: Breng de ark Gods herwaarts. Want de ark Gods was te dien dage bij de kinderen Israels. 19En het geschiedde, toen Saul nog tot den priester sprak, dat het rumoer, hetwelk in der Filistijnen leger was, zeer toenam en vermenigvuldigde; zo zeide Saul tot den priester: Haal uw hand in. 20Saul nu, en al het volk, dat bij hem was, werd samengeroepen, en zij kwamen ten strijde; en ziet, het zwaard des enen was tegen den anderen, er was een zeer groot gedruis. 21Er waren ook Hebreen bij de Filistijnen, als eertijds, die met hen in het leger opgetogen waren rondom; dezen nu vervoegden zich ook met de Israelieten, die bij Saul en Jonathan waren. 22Als alle mannen van Israel, die zich verstoken hadden in het gebergte van Efraim, hoorden, dat de Filistijnen vluchtten, zo kleefden zij ook hen achteraan in den strijd. 23Alzo verloste de HEERE Israel te dien dage; en het leger trok over naar Beth-Aven. 24En de mannen van Israel werden mat te dien dage; want Saul had het volk bezworen, zeggende: Vervloekt zij de man, die spijze eet tot aan den avond, opdat ik mij aan mijn vijanden wreke! Daarom proefde dat ganse volk geen spijs. 25En het ganse volk kwam in een woud; en daar was honig op het veld. 26Toen het volk in het woud kwam, ziet, zo was er een honigvloed; maar niemand raakte met zijn hand aan zijn mond, want het volk vreesde de bezwering. 27Maar Jonathan had het niet gehoord, toen zijn vader het volk bezworen had, en hij reikte het einde van den staf uit, die in zijn hand was, en hij doopte denzelven in een honigraat; als hij nu zijn hand tot zijn mond wendde, zo werden zijn ogen verlicht. 28Toen antwoordde een man uit het volk, en zeide: Uw vader heeft het volk zwaarlijk bezworen, zeggende: Vervloekt zij de man, die heden brood eet! Daarom bezwijkt het volk. 29Toen zeide Jonathan: Mijn vader heeft het land beroerd; zie toch, hoe mijn ogen verlicht zijn, omdat ik een weinig van dezen honig gesmaakt heb; 30Hoe veel meer, indien het volk heden had mogen vrijelijk eten van den buit zijner vijanden, dien het gevonden heeft! Maar nu is die slag niet groot geweest over de Filistijnen. 31Doch zij sloegen te dien dage de Filistijnen van Michmas tot Ajalon; en het volk was zeer moede. 32Toen maakte zich het volk aan den buit, en zij namen schapen, en runderen, en kalveren, en zij slachtten ze tegen de aarde; en het volk at ze met het bloed. 33En men boodschapte het Saul, zeggende: Zie, het volk verzondigt zich aan den HEERE, etende met het bloed. En hij zeide: Gij hebt trouwelooslijk gehandeld; wentelt heden een groten steen tot mij. 34Verder sprak Saul: Verstrooit u onder het volk, en zegt tot hen: Brengt tot mij een iegelijk zijn os, en een iegelijk zijn schaap, en slacht het hier, en eet, en bezondigt u niet aan den HEERE, die etende met het bloed. Toen bracht al het volk een iegelijk zijn os met zijn hand, des nachts, en slachtte ze aldaar. 35Toen bouwde Saul den HEERE een altaar; dit was het eerste altaar, dat hij den HEERE bouwde. 36Daarna zeide Saul: Laat ons aftrekken de Filistijnen na, bij nacht, en laat ons dezelve beroven, totdat het morgen licht worde, en laat ons niet een man onder hen overig laten. Zij nu zeiden: Doe al wat goed is in uw ogen; maar de priester zeide: Laat ons herwaarts tot God naderen. 37Toen vraagde Saul God: Zal ik aftrekken de Filistijnen na? Zult Gij ze in de hand van Israel overgeven? Doch Hij antwoordde hem niet te dien dage. 38Toen zeide Saul: Komt herwaarts uit alle hoeken des volks, en verneemt, en ziet, waarin deze zonde heden geschied zij. 39Want zo waarachtig als de HEERE leeft, Die Israel verlost, alware het in mijn zoon Jonathan, zo zal hij den dood sterven; en niemand uit het ganse volk antwoordde hem. 40Verder zeide hij tot het ganse Israel: Gijlieden zult aan de ene zijde zijn, en ik en mijn zoon Jonathan zullen aan de andere zijde zijn. Toen zeide het volk tot Saul: Doe, wat goed is in uw ogen. 41Saul nu sprak tot den HEERE, den God Israels: Toon den onschuldige. Toen werd Jonathan en Saul geraakt, en het volk ging vrij uit. 42Toen zeide Saul: Werpt het lot tussen mij en tussen mijn zoon Jonathan. Toen werd Jonathan geraakt. 43Saul dan zeide tot Jonathan: Geef mij te kennen, wat gij gedaan hebt. Toen gaf het Jonathan hem te kennen, en zeide: Ik heb maar een weinig honigs geproefd, met het uiterste des stafs, dien ik in mijn hand had; zie hier ben ik, moet ik sterven? 44Toen zeide Saul: Zo doe mij God, en zo doe Hij daartoe, Jonathan! gij moet den dood sterven. 45Maar het volk zeide tot Saul: Zou Jonathan sterven, die deze grote verlossing in Israel gedaan heeft? Dat zij verre! zo waarachtig als de HEERE leeft, als er een haar van zijn hoofd op de aarde vallen zal; want hij heeft dit heden met God gedaan. Alzo verloste het volk Jonathan, dat hij niet stierf. 46Saul nu toog op van achter de Filistijnen, en de Filistijnen trokken aan hun plaats. 47Toen nam Saul het koninkrijk over Israel in; en hij streed rondom tegen al zijn vijanden, tegen Moab, en tegen de kinderen Ammons, en tegen Edom, en tegen de koningen van Zoba, en tegen de Filistijnen; en overal, waar hij zich wendde, oefende hij straf. 48En hij handelde dapper, en hij sloeg de Amalekieten, en hij redde Israel uit de hand desgenen, die hem beroofde. 49De zonen van Saul nu waren: Jonathan, en Isvi, en Malchi-sua; en de namen zijner twee dochteren waren deze: de naam der eerstgeborenen was Merab, en de naam der kleinste Michal. 50En de naam van Sauls huisvrouw was Ahinoam, een dochter van Ahimaaz; en de naam van zijn krijgsoverste was Abner, een zoon van Ner, Sauls oom. 51En Kis was Sauls vader, en Ner, Abners vader, was een zoon van Abiel. 52En er was een sterke krijg tegen de Filistijnen al de dagen van Saul; daarom alle helden en alle kloeke mannen, die Saul zag, die vergaderde hij tot zich.
