1Allora dunque Pilato prese Gesù e lo fece flagellare. 2E i soldati, intrecciata una corona di spine, gliela posero sul capo, e gli misero addosso un manto di porpora; e s’accostavano a lui e dicevano: 3Salve, Re de’ Giudei! e gli davan degli schiaffi. 4Pilato uscì di nuovo, e disse loro: Ecco, ve lo meno fuori, affinché sappiate che non trovo in lui alcuna colpa. 5Gesù dunque uscì, portando la corona di spine e il manto di porpora. E Pilato disse loro: Ecco l’uomo! 6Come dunque i capi sacerdoti e le guardie l’ebbero veduto, gridarono: Crocifiggilo, crocifiggilo! Pilato disse loro: Prendetelo voi e crocifiggetelo; perché io non trovo in lui alcuna colpa. 7I Giudei gli risposero: Noi abbiamo una legge, e secondo questa legge egli deve morire, perché egli s’è fatto Figliuol di Dio. 8Quando Pilato ebbe udita questa parola, temette maggiormente; 9e rientrato nel pretorio, disse a Gesù: Donde sei tu? Ma Gesù non gli diede alcuna risposta. 10Allora Pilato gli disse: Non mi parli? Non sai che ho potestà di liberarti e potestà di crocifiggerti? 11Gesù gli rispose: Tu non avresti potestà alcuna contro di me, se ciò non ti fosse stato dato da alto; Perciò chi m’ha dato nelle tue mani, ha maggior colpa. 12Da quel momento Pilato cercava di liberarlo; ma i Giudei gridavano, dicendo: Se liberi costui, non sei amico di Cesare. Chiunque si fa re, si oppone a Cesare. 13Pilato dunque, udite queste parole, menò fuori Gesù, e si assise al tribunale nel luogo detto Lastrico, e in ebraico Gabbatà. 14Era la preparazione della Pasqua, ed era circa l’ora sesta. Ed egli disse ai Giudei: Ecco il vostro Re! 15Allora essi gridarono: Toglilo, toglilo di mezzo, crocifiggilo! Pilato disse loro: Crocifiggerò io il vostro Re? I capi sacerdoti risposero: Noi non abbiamo altro re che Cesare. 16Allora lo consegnò loro perché fosse crocifisso. 17Presero dunque Gesù; ed egli, portando la sua croce, venne al luogo del Teschio, che in ebraico si chiama Golgota, 18dove lo crocifissero, assieme a due altri, uno di qua, l’altro di là, e Gesù nel mezzo. 19E Pilato fece pure un’iscrizione, e la pose sulla croce. E v’era scritto: GESU’ IL NAZARENO, IL RE DE’ GIUDEI. 20Molti dunque dei Giudei lessero questa iscrizione, perché il luogo dove Gesù fu crocifisso era vicino alla città; e l’iscrizione era in ebraico, in latino e in greco. 21Perciò i capi sacerdoti dei Giudei dicevano a Pilato: Non scrivere: Il Re dei Giudei; ma che egli ha detto: Io sono il Re de’ Giudei. 22Pilato rispose: Quel che ho scritto, ho scritto. 23I soldati dunque, quando ebbero crocifisso Gesù, presero le sue vesti, e ne fecero quattro parti, una parte per ciascun soldato, e la tunica. Or la tunica era senza cuciture, tessuta per intero dall’alto in basso. 24Dissero dunque tra loro: Non la stracciamo, ma tiriamo a sorte a chi tocchi; affinché si adempisse la Scrittura che dice: Hanno spartito fra loro le mie vesti, e han tirato la sorte sulla mia tunica. Questo dunque fecero i soldati. 25Or presso la croce di Gesù stavano sua madre e la sorella di sua madre, Maria moglie di Cleopa, e Maria Maddalena. 26Gesù dunque, vedendo sua madre e presso a lei il discepolo ch’egli amava, disse a sua madre: Donna, ecco il tuo figlio! 27Poi disse al discepolo: Ecco tua madre! E da quel momento, il discepolo la prese in casa sua. 28Dopo questo, Gesù, sapendo che ogni cosa era già compiuta, affinché la Scrittura fosse adempiuta, disse: Ho sete. 29V’era quivi un vaso pieno d’aceto; i soldati dunque, posta in cima a un ramo d’issopo una spugna piena d’aceto, gliel’accostarono alla bocca. 30E quando Gesù ebbe preso l’aceto, disse: E’ compiuto! E chinato il capo, rese lo spirito. 31Allora i Giudei, perché i corpi non rimanessero sulla croce durante il sabato (poiché era la Preparazione, e quel giorno del sabato era un gran giorno), chiesero a Pilato che fossero loro fiaccate le gambe, e fossero tolti via. 32I soldati dunque vennero e fiaccarono le gambe al primo, e poi anche all’altro che era crocifisso con lui; 33ma venuti a Gesù, come lo videro già morto, non gli fiaccarono le gambe, 34ma uno de’ soldati gli forò il costato con una lancia, e subito ne uscì sangue ed acqua. 35E colui che l’ha veduto, ne ha reso testimonianza, e la sua testimonianza è verace; ed egli sa che dice il vero, affinché anche voi crediate. 36Poiché questo è avvenuto affinché si adempisse la Scrittura: Niun osso d’esso sarà fiaccato. 37E anche un’altra Scrittura dice: Volgeranno lo sguardo a colui che hanno trafitto. 38Dopo queste cose, Giuseppe d’Arimatea, che era discepolo di Gesù, ma occulto per timore de’ Giudei, chiese a Pilato di poter togliere il corpo di Gesù; e Pilato glielo permise. Egli dunque venne e tolse il corpo di Gesù. 39E Nicodemo, che da prima era venuto a Gesù di notte, venne anche egli, portando una mistura di mirra e d’aloe di circa cento libbre. 40Essi dunque presero il corpo di Gesù e lo avvolsero in pannilini con gli aromi, com’è usanza di seppellire presso i Giudei. 41Or nel luogo dov’egli fu crocifisso c’era un orto; e in quell’orto un sepolcro nuovo, dove nessuno era ancora stato posto. 42Quivi dunque posero Gesù, a motivo della Preparazione dei Giudei, perché il sepolcro era vicino.
1So Pilate then took Jesus, and flogged him. 2The soldiers twisted thorns into a crown, and put it on his head, and dressed him in a purple garment. 3They kept saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and they kept slapping him. 4Then Pilate went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I bring him out to you, that you may know that I find no basis for a charge against him.” 5Jesus therefore came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment. Pilate said to them, “Behold, the man!” 6When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him, they shouted, saying, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves, and crucify him, for I find no basis for a charge against him.” 7The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.” 8When therefore Pilate heard this saying, he was more afraid. 9He entered into the Praetorium again, and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 10Pilate therefore said to him, “Aren’t you speaking to me? Don’t you know that I have power to release you, and have power to crucify you?” 11Jesus answered, “You would have no power at all against me, unless it were given to you from above. Therefore he who delivered me to you has greater sin.” 12At this, Pilate was seeking to release him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you release this man, you aren’t Caesar’s friend! Everyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar!” 13When Pilate therefore heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called “The Pavement”, but in Hebrew, “Gabbatha.” 14Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, at about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold, your King!” 15They cried out, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!” 16So then he delivered him to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led him away. 17He went out, bearing his cross, to the place called “The Place of a Skull”, which is called in Hebrew, “Golgotha”, 18where they crucified him, and with him two others, on either side one, and Jesus in the middle. 19Pilate wrote a title also, and put it on the cross. There was written, “JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.” 20Therefore many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. 21The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘he said, I am King of the Jews.’” 22Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” 23Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also the coat. Now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. 24Then they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it to decide whose it will be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which says, “They parted my garments among them. For my cloak they cast lots.” Therefore the soldiers did these things. 25But there were standing by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26Therefore when Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold your son!” 27Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour, the disciple took her to his own home. 28After this, Jesus, seeing that all things were now finished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I am thirsty.” 29Now a vessel full of vinegar was set there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop, and held it at his mouth. 30When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, “It is finished.” He bowed his head, and gave up his spirit. 31Therefore the Jews, because it was the Preparation Day, so that the bodies wouldn’t remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special one), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32Therefore the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him; 33but when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was already dead, they didn’t break his legs. 34However one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. 35He who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, that you may believe. 36For these things happened, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, “A bone of him will not be broken.” 37Again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they pierced.” 38After these things, Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked of Pilate that he might take away Jesus’ body. Pilate gave him permission. He came therefore and took away his body. 39Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred Roman pounds. 40So they took Jesus’ body, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. 41Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden. In the garden was a new tomb in which no man had ever yet been laid. 42Then because of the Jews’ Preparation Day (for the tomb was near at hand) they laid Jesus there.

Pilatus zeide tot hen: Zal ik uw Koning kruisigen? De overpriesters antwoordden: Wij hebben geen koning, dan den keizer. 16Toen gaf hij Hem dan hun over, opdat Hij gekruist zou worden. Dit hebben dan de krijgsknechten gedaan. 25En bij het kruis van Jezus stonden Zijn moeder en Zijner moeders zuster, Maria, de vrouw van Klopas, en Maria Magdalena. 26Jezus nu, ziende Zijn moeder, en den discipel, dien Hij liefhad, daarbij staande, zeide tot Zijn moeder: Vrouw, zie, uw zoon. 27Daarna zeide Hij tot den discipel: Zie, uw moeder. En het hoofd buigende, gaf den geest. 31De Joden dan, opdat de lichamen niet aan het kruis zouden blijven op den sabbat, dewijl het de voorbereiding was (want die dag des sabbats was groot), baden Pilatus, dat hun benen zouden gebroken, en zij weggenomen worden. 32De krijgsknechten dan kwamen, en braken wel de benen des eersten, en des anderen, die met Hem gekruist was; 33Maar komende tot Jezus, als zij zagen, dat Hij nu gestorven was, zo braken zij Zijn benen niet. 34Maar een der krijgsknechten doorstak Zijn zijde met een speer, en terstond kwam er bloed en water uit. 35En die het gezien heeft, die heeft het getuigd, en zijn getuigenis is waarachtig; en hij weet, dat hij zegt, hetgeen waar is, opdat ook gij geloven moogt. 36Want deze dingen zijn geschied, opdat de Schrift vervuld worde: Geen been van Hem zal verbroken worden. 37En wederom zegt een andere Schrift: Zij zullen zien, in Welken zij gestoken hebben. 38En daarna Jozef van Arimathea (die een discipel van Jezus was, maar bedekt om de vreze der Joden), bad Pilatus, dat hij mocht het lichaam van Jezus wegnemen; en Pilatus liet het toe. Hij dan ging en nam het lichaam van Jezus weg. 39En Nicodemus kwam ook (die des nachts tot Jezus eerst gekomen was), brengende een mengsel van mirre en aloe; omtrent honderd ponden gewichts. 40Zij namen dan het lichaam van Jezus, en bonden dat in linnen doeken met de specerijen, gelijk de Joden de gewoonte hebben van begraven. 41En er was in de plaats, waar Hij gekruist was, een hof, en in den hof een nieuw graf, in hetwelk nog nooit iemand gelegd was geweest. 42Aldaar dan legden zij Jezus, om de voorbereiding der Joden, overmits het graf nabij was.
