1Del rimanente, fratelli, come avete imparato da noi il modo in cui vi dovete condurre e piacere a Dio (ed è così che già vi conducete), vi preghiamo e vi esortiamo nel Signor Gesù a vie più progredire. 2Poiché sapete quali comandamenti vi abbiamo dati per la grazia del Signor Gesù. 3Perché questa è la volontà di Dio: che vi santifichiate, che v’asteniate dalla fornicazione, 4che ciascun di voi sappia possedere il proprio corpo in santità ed onore, 5non dandosi a passioni di concupiscenza come fanno i pagani i quali non conoscono Iddio; 6e che nessuno soverchi il fratello né lo sfrutti negli affari; perché il Signore è un vendicatore in tutte queste cose, siccome anche v’abbiamo innanzi detto e protestato. 7Poiché Iddio ci ha chiamati non a impurità, ma a santificazione. 8Chi dunque sprezza questi precetti, non sprezza un uomo, ma quell’Iddio, il quale anche vi comunica il dono del suo Santo Spirito. 9Or quanto all’amor fraterno non avete bisogno che io ve ne scriva, giacché voi stessi siete stati ammaestrati da Dio ad amarvi gli uni gli altri; 10e invero voi lo fate verso tutti i fratelli che sono nell’intera Macedonia. Ma v’esortiamo, fratelli, che vie più abbondiate in questo, e vi studiate di vivere in quiete, 11di fare i fatti vostri e di lavorare con le vostre mani, come v’abbiamo ordinato di fare, 12onde camminiate onestamente verso quelli di fuori, e non abbiate bisogno di nessuno. 13Or, fratelli, non vogliamo che siate in ignoranza circa quelli che dormono, affinché non siate contristati come gli altri che non hanno speranza. 14Poiché, se crediamo che Gesù morì e risuscitò, così pure, quelli che si sono addormentati, Iddio, per mezzo di Gesù, li ricondurrà con esso lui. 15Poiché questo vi diciamo per parola del Signore: che noi viventi, i quali saremo rimasti fino alla venuta del Signore, non precederemo quelli che si sono addormentati; 16perché il Signore stesso, con potente grido, con voce d’arcangelo e con la tromba di Dio, scenderà dal cielo, e i morti in Cristo risusciteranno i primi; 17poi noi viventi, che saremo rimasti, verremo insiem con loro rapiti sulle nuvole, a incontrare il Signore nell’aria; e così saremo sempre col Signore. 18Consolatevi dunque gli uni gli altri con queste parole.
1Finally then, brothers, we beg and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, that you abound more and more. 2For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. 3For this is the will of God: your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality, 4that each one of you know how to possess himself of his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who don’t know God; 6that no one should take advantage of and wrong a brother or sister in this matter; because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as also we forewarned you and testified. 7For God called us not for uncleanness, but in sanctification. 8Therefore he who rejects this doesn’t reject man, but God, who has also given his Holy Spirit to you. 9But concerning brotherly love, you have no need that one write to you. For you yourselves are taught by God to love one another, 10for indeed you do it toward all the brothers who are in all Macedonia. But we exhort you, brothers, that you abound more and more; 11and that you make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, even as we instructed you; 12that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and may have need of nothing. 13But we don’t want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don’t grieve like the rest, who have no hope. 14For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. 15For this we tell you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left to the coming of the Lord, will in no way precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with God’s trumpet. The dead in Christ will rise first, 17then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. So we will be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore comfort one another with these words.
1Voorts dan, broeders, wij bidden en vermanen u in den Heere Jezus, gelijk gij van ons ontvangen hebt, hoe gij moet wandelen en Gode behagen, dat gij daarin meer overvloedig wordt. 2Want gij weet, wat bevelen wij u gegeven hebben door den Heere Jezus. 3Want dit is de wil van God, uw heiligmaking: dat gij u onthoudt van de hoererij; 4Dat een iegelijk van u wete zijn vat te bezitten in heiligmaking en eer; 5Niet in kwade beweging der begeerlijkheid, gelijk als de heidenen, die God niet kennen. 6Dat niemand zijn broeder vertrede, noch bedriege in zijn handeling; want de Heere is een wreker over dit alles, gelijk wij u ook te voren gezegd en betuigd hebben. 7Want God heeft ons niet geroepen tot onreinigheid, maar tot heiligmaking. 8Zo dan die dit verwerpt, die verwerpt geen mens, maar God, Die ook Zijn Heiligen Geest in ons heeft gegeven. 9Van de broederlijke liefde nu hebt gij niet van node, dat ik u schrijve; want gijzelven zijt van God geleerd om elkander lief te hebben. 10Want gij doet ook hetzelfde aan al de broederen, die in geheel Macedonie zijn. Maar wij vermanen u, broeders, dat gij meer overvloedig wordt; 11En dat gij u benaarstigt stil te zijn, en uw eigen dingen te doen, en te werken met uw eigen handen, gelijk wij u bevolen hebben; 12Opdat gij eerlijk wandelt bij degenen, die buiten zijn, en geen ding van node hebt. 13Doch, broeders, ik wil niet, dat gij onwetende zijt van degenen, die ontslapen zijn, opdat gij niet bedroefd zijt, gelijk als de anderen, die geen hoop hebben. 14Want indien wij geloven, dat Jezus gestorven is en opgestaan, alzo zal ook God degenen, die ontslapen zijn in Jezus, weder brengen met Hem. 15Want dat zeggen wij u door het Woord des Heeren, dat wij, die levend overblijven zullen tot de toekomst des Heeren, niet zullen voorkomen degenen, die ontslapen zijn. 16Want de Heere Zelf zal met een geroep, met de stem des archangels, en met de bazuin Gods nederdalen van den hemel; en die in Christus gestorven zijn, zullen eerst opstaan; 17Daarna wij, die levend overgebleven zijn, zullen te zamen met hen opgenomen worden in de wolken, den Heere tegemoet, in de lucht; en alzo zullen wij altijd met den Heere wezen. 18Zo dan, vertroost elkander met deze woorden.
