1Perciò, non potendo più reggere, stimammo bene di esser lasciati soli ad Atene; 2e mandammo Timoteo, nostro fratello e ministro di Dio nella propagazione del Vangelo di Cristo, per confermarvi e confortarvi nella vostra fede, 3affinché nessuno fosse scosso in mezzo a queste afflizioni; poiché voi stessi sapete che a questo siamo destinati. 4Perché anche quando eravamo fra voi, vi predicevamo che saremmo afflitti; come anche è avvenuto, e voi lo sapete. 5Perciò anch’io, non potendo più resistere, mandai ad informarmi della vostra fede, per tema che il tentatore vi avesse tentati, e la nostra fatica fosse riuscita vana. 6Ma ora che Timoteo è giunto qui da presso a voi e ci ha recato liete notizie della vostra fede e del vostro amore, e ci ha detto che serbate del continuo buona ricordanza di noi bramando di vederci, come anche noi bramiamo vedervi, 7per questa ragione, fratelli, siamo stati consolati a vostro riguardo, in mezzo a tutte le nostre distrette e afflizioni, mediante la vostra fede; 8perché ora viviamo, se voi state saldi nel Signore. 9Poiché quali grazie possiam noi rendere a Dio, a vostro riguardo, per tutta l’allegrezza della quale ci rallegriamo a cagion di voi nel cospetto dell’Iddio nostro, 10mentre notte e giorno preghiamo intensamente di poter vedere la vostra faccia e supplire alle lacune della vostra fede? 11Ora Iddio stesso, nostro Padre, e il Signor nostro Gesù ci appianino la via per venir da voi; 12e quant’è a voi, il Signore vi accresca e vi faccia abbondare in amore gli uni verso gli altri e verso tutti, come anche noi abbondiamo verso voi, 13per confermare i vostri cuori, onde siano irreprensibili in santità nel cospetto di Dio nostro Padre, quando il Signor nostro Gesù verrà con tutti i suoi santi.
1Therefore when we couldn’t stand it any longer, we thought it good to be left behind at Athens alone, 2and sent Timothy, our brother and God’s servant in the Good News of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith; 3that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you know that we are appointed to this task. 4For most certainly, when we were with you, we told you beforehand that we are to suffer affliction, even as it happened, and you know. 5For this cause I also, when I couldn’t stand it any longer, sent that I might know your faith, for fear that by any means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor would have been in vain. 6But when Timothy came just now to us from you, and brought us glad news of your faith and love, and that you have good memories of us always, longing to see us, even as we also long to see you; 7for this cause, brothers, we were comforted over you in all our distress and affliction through your faith. 8For now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord. 9For what thanksgiving can we render again to God for you, for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sakes before our God; 10night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face, and may perfect that which is lacking in your faith? 11Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way to you; 12and the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we also do toward you, 13to the end he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.
1Daarom, deze begeerte niet langer kunnende verdragen, hebben wij gaarne willen te Athene alleen gelaten worden; 2En hebben gezonden Timotheus, onzen broeder, en Gods dienaar, en onzen medearbeider in het Evangelie van Christus, om u te versterken, en u te vermanen van uw geloof; 3Opdat niemand bewogen worde in deze verdrukkingen; want gij weet zelven, dat wij hiertoe gesteld zijn. 4Want ook, toen wij bij u waren, voorzeiden wij u, dat wij zouden verdrukt worden, gelijk ook geschied is, en gij weet het. 5Daarom ook deze begeerte niet langer kunnende verdragen, heb ik hem gezonden, om uw geloof te verstaan; of niet misschien de verzoeker u zou verzocht hebben, en onze arbeid ijdel zou wezen. 6Maar als Timotheus nu van ulieden tot ons gekomen was, en ons de goede boodschap gebracht had van uw geloof en liefde, en dat gij altijd goede gedachtenis van ons hebt, zeer begerig zijnde om ons te zien, gelijk wij ook om ulieden; 7Zo zijn wij daarom, broeders, over u in al onze verdrukking en nood vertroost geworden door uw geloof; 8Want nu leven wij, indien gij vast staat in den Heere. 9Want wat dankzegging kunnen wij Gode tot vergelding wedergeven voor u, vanwege al de blijdschap, waarmede wij ons om uwentwil verblijden voor onzen God? 10Nacht en dag zeer overvloediglijk biddende, om uw aangezicht te mogen zien, en te volmaken, hetgeen aan uw geloof ontbreekt. 11Doch onze God en Vader Zelf, en onze Heere Jezus Christus richte onzen weg tot u. 12En de Heere vermeerdere u, en make u overvloedig in de liefde jegens elkander en jegens allen, gelijk wij ook zijn jegens u; 13Opdat Hij uw harten versterke, om onberispelijk te zijn in heiligmaking, voor onzen God en Vader, in de toekomst van onzen Heere Jezus Christus met al Zijn heiligen.
