1Voi stessi, fratelli, sapete che la nostra venuta tra voi non è stata invano; 2anzi, sebbene avessimo prima patito e fossimo stati oltraggiati, come sapete, a Filippi, pur ci siamo rinfrancati nell’Iddio nostro, per annunziarvi l’Evangelo di Dio in mezzo a molte lotte. 3Poiché la nostra esortazione non procede da impostura, né da motivi impuri, né è fatta con frode; 4ma siccome siamo stati approvati da Dio che ci ha stimati tali da poterci affidare l’Evangelo, parliamo in modo da piacere non agli uomini, ma a Dio che prova i nostri cuori. 5Difatti, non abbiamo mai usato un parlar lusinghevole, come ben sapete, né pretesti ispirati da cupidigia; Iddio ne è testimone. 6E non abbiam cercato gloria dagli uomini, né da voi, né da altri, quantunque, come apostoli di Cristo, avessimo potuto far valere la nostra autorità; 7invece, siamo stati mansueti in mezzo a voi, come una nutrice che cura teneramente i propri figliuoli. 8Così, nel nostro grande affetto per voi, eravamo disposti a darvi non soltanto l’Evangelo di Dio, ma anche le nostre proprie vite, tanto ci eravate divenuti cari. 9Perché, fratelli, voi la ricordate la nostra fatica e la nostra pena; egli è lavorando notte e giorno per non essere d’aggravio ad alcuno di voi, che v’abbiam predicato l’Evangelo di Dio. 10Voi siete testimoni, e Dio lo è pure, del modo santo, giusto e irreprensibile con cui ci siamo comportati verso voi che credete; 11e sapete pure che, come fa un padre coi suoi figliuoli, noi abbiamo esortato, 12confortato e scongiurato ciascun di voi a condursi in modo degno di Dio, che vi chiama al suo regno e alla sua gloria. 13E per questa ragione anche noi rendiamo del continuo grazie a Dio: perché quando riceveste da noi la parola della predicazione, cioè la parola di Dio, voi l’accettaste non come parola d’uomini, ma, quale essa è veramente, come parola di Dio, la quale opera efficacemente in voi che credete. 14Poiché, fratelli, voi siete divenuti imitatori delle chiese di Dio che sono in Cristo Gesù nella Giudea; in quanto che anche voi avete sofferto dai vostri connazionali le stesse cose che quelle chiese hanno sofferto dai Giudei, 15i quali hanno ucciso e il Signor Gesù e i profeti, hanno cacciato noi, e non piacciono a Dio, e sono avversi a tutti gli uomini, 16divietandoci di parlare ai Gentili perché sieno salvati. Essi vengon così colmando senza posa la misura dei loro peccati; ma ormai li ha raggiunti l’ira finale. 17Quant’è a noi, fratelli, orbati di voi per breve tempo, di persona, non di cuore, abbiamo tanto maggiormente cercato, con gran desiderio, di veder la vostra faccia. 18Perciò abbiam voluto, io Paolo almeno, non una ma due volte, venir a voi; ma Satana ce lo ha impedito. 19Qual è infatti la nostra speranza, o la nostra allegrezza, o la corona di cui ci gloriamo? Non siete forse voi, nel cospetto del nostro Signor Gesù quand’egli verrà? 20Sì, certo, la nostra gloria e la nostra allegrezza siete voi.
1For you yourselves know, brothers, our visit to you wasn’t in vain, 2but having suffered before and been shamefully treated, as you know, at Philippi, we grew bold in our God to tell you the Good News of God in much conflict. 3For our exhortation is not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in deception. 4But even as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, who tests our hearts. 5For neither were we at any time found using words of flattery, as you know, nor a cloak of covetousness (God is witness), 6nor seeking glory from men (neither from you nor from others), when we might have claimed authority as apostles of Christ. 7But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother cherishes her own children. 8Even so, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you, not the Good News of God only, but also our own souls, because you had become very dear to us. 9For you remember, brothers, our labor and travail; for working night and day, that we might not burden any of you, we preached to you the Good News of God. 10You are witnesses with God, how holy, righteously, and blamelessly we behaved ourselves toward you who believe. 11As you know, we exhorted, comforted, and implored every one of you, as a father does his own children, 12to the end that you should walk worthily of God, who calls you into his own Kingdom and glory. 13For this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when you received from us the word of the message of God, you accepted it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also works in you who believe. 14For you, brothers, became imitators of the assemblies of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus; for you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, even as they did from the Jews; 15who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and drove us out, and didn’t please God, and are contrary to all men; 16forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved; to fill up their sins always. But wrath has come on them to the uttermost. 17But we, brothers, being bereaved of you for a short season, in presence, not in heart, tried even harder to see your face with great desire, 18because we wanted to come to you—indeed, I, Paul, once and again—but Satan hindered us. 19For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Isn’t it even you, before our Lord Jesus at his coming? 20For you are our glory and our joy.
1Want gij weet zelven, broeders, onzen ingang tot u, dat die niet ijdel is geweest; 2Maar, hoewel wij te voren geleden hadden, en ook ons smaadheid aangedaan was, gelijk gij weet, te Filippi, zo hebben wij nochtans vrijmoedigheid gebruikt in onzen God, om het Evangelie van God tot u te spreken in veel strijds. 3Want onze vermaning is niet geweest uit verleiding, noch uit onreinigheid, noch met bedrog; 4Maar, gelijk wij van God beproefd zijn geweest, dat ons het Evangelie zou toebetrouwd worden, alzo spreken wij, niet als mensen behagende, maar Gode, Die onze harten beproeft. 5Want wij hebben nooit met pluimstrijkende woorden omgegaan, gelijk gij weet, noch met enig bedeksel van gierigheid; God is Getuige! 6Noch zoekende eer uit mensen, noch van u, noch van anderen; hoewel wij u tot last konden zijn als Christus' apostelen; 7Maar wij zijn vriendelijk geweest in het midden van u, gelijk als een voedster haar kinderen koestert; 8Alzo wij, tot u zeer genegen zijnde, hebben u gaarne willen mededelen niet alleen het Evangelie van God, maar ook onze eigen zielen, daarom dat gij ons lief geworden waart. 9Want gij gedenkt, broeders, onzen arbeid en moeite; want nacht en dag werkende, opdat wij niemand onder u zouden lastig zijn, hebben wij het Evangelie van God onder u gepredikt. 10Gij zijt getuigen, en God, hoe heilig, en rechtvaardig, en onberispelijk wij u, die gelooft, geweest zijn. 11Gelijk gij weet, hoe wij een iegelijk van u, als een vader zijn kinderen, vermaanden en vertroostten, 12En betuigden, dat gij zoudt wandelen, waardiglijk Gode, Die u roept tot Zijn Koninkrijk en heerlijkheid. 13Daarom danken wij ook God zonder ophouden, dat, als gij het Woord der prediking van God van ons ontvangen hebt, gij dat aangenomen hebt, niet als der mensen woord, maar (gelijk het waarlijk is) als Gods Woord, dat ook werkt in u, die gelooft. 14Want gij, broeders, zijt navolgers geworden der Gemeenten Gods, die in Judea zijn, in Christus Jezus; dewijl ook gij hetzelfde geleden hebt van uw eigen medeburgers, gelijk als zij van de Joden; 15Welke ook gedood hebben den Heere Jezus, en hun eigen profeten; en ons hebben vervolgd, en Gode niet behagen, en alle mensen tegen zijn; 16En verhinderen ons te spreken tot de heidenen, dat zij zalig mochten worden; opdat zij te allen tijd hun zonden vervullen zouden. En de toorn is over hen gekomen tot het einde. 17Maar wij, broeders, van u beroofd geweest zijnde voor een kleine wijle tijds, naar het aangezicht, niet naar het hart, hebben ons te overvloediger benaarstigd, om uw aangezicht te zien, met grote begeerte. 18Daarom hebben wij tot u willen komen (immers ik Paulus) eenmaal en andermaal, maar de satanas heeft ons belet. 19Want welke is onze hoop, of blijdschap, of kroon des roems? Zijt gij die ook niet voor onzen Heere Jezus Christus in Zijn toekomst? 20Want gij zijt onze heerlijkheid en blijdschap.
