1Και συ ανάλαβε θρήνον διά τους ηγεμόνας του Ισραήλ, 2και ειπέ, Τι είναι η μήτηρ σου; Λέαινα· κείται μεταξύ λεόντων, έθρεψε τα βρέφη αυτής εν μέσω σκύμνων. 3Και ανέθρεψεν εν εκ των βρεφών αυτής και έγεινε σκύμνος και έμαθε να αρπάζη το θήραμα· ανθρώπους έτρωγε. 4Και τα έθνη ήκουσαν περί αυτού· επιάσθη εν τω λάκκω αυτών, και έφεραν αυτόν με αλύσεις εις την γην της Αιγύπτου. 5Και ιδούσα ότι η ελπίς αυτής εματαιώθη και εχάθη, έλαβεν εν άλλο εκ των βρεφών αυτής και έκαμεν αυτό σκύμνον. 6Και αναστρεφόμενον εν μέσω των λεόντων έγεινε σκύμνος και έμαθε να αρπάζη θήραμα· ανθρώπους έτρωγε. 7Και εγνώρισε τα παλάτια αυτών και ερήμονε τας πόλεις αυτών· και ήτο ηφανισμένη η γη και το πλήρωμα αυτής από του ήχου του βρυχήματος αυτού. 8Και τα έθνη παρετάχθησαν εναντίον αυτού κυκλόθεν εκ των επαρχιών και ήπλωσαν κατ' αυτού τα βρόχια αυτών, και επιάσθη εν τω λάκκω αυτών. 9Και έβαλον αυτόν με αλύσεις εις κλωβίον και έφεραν αυτόν προς τον βασιλέα της Βαβυλώνος· εν δεσμωτηρίω εισήγαγον αυτόν, διά να μη ακουσθή πλέον φωνή αυτού επί τα όρη του Ισραήλ. 10Η μήτηρ σου, καθ' ομοίωσίν σου, ήτο ως άμπελος πεφυτευμένη πλησίον των υδάτων· έγεινε καρποφόρος και πλήρης κλάδων διά τα πολλά ύδατα. 11Και έγειναν εις αυτήν ράβδοι ισχυραί διά σκήπτρα των κρατούντων· και ο κορμός αυτής υψώθη εν μέσω των πυκνών κλάδων, και έγεινε περίβλεπτος κατά το ύψος αυτής μεταξύ του πλήθους των βλαστών αυτής. 12Απεσπάσθη όμως μετά θυμού, ερρίφθη κατά γης, και ανατολικός άνεμος κατεξήρανε τον καρπόν αυτής· αι ισχυραί αυτής ράβδοι συνεθλάσθησαν και εξηράνθησαν· πυρ κατέφαγεν αυτάς. 13Και τώρα είναι πεφυτευμένη εν ερήμω, εν ξηρά και ανύδρω γη. 14Και εξήλθε πυρ από ράβδου τινός εκ των κλάδων αυτής και κατέφαγε τον καρπόν αυτής, ώστε δεν υπήρχε πλέον εν αυτή ράβδος ισχυρά διά σκήπτρον ηγεμονίας· ούτος είναι ο θρήνος και θέλει είσθαι εις θρήνον.
1Moreover, take up a lamentation for the princes of Israel, 2and say, What was your mother? A lioness: she couched among lions, in the midst of the young lions she nourished her cubs. 3She brought up one of her cubs: he became a young lion, and he learned to catch the prey; he devoured men. 4The nations also heard of him; he was taken in their pit; and they brought him with hooks to the land of Egypt. 5Now when she saw that she had waited, and her hope was lost, then she took another of her cubs, and made him a young lion. 6He went up and down among the lions; he became a young lion, and he learned to catch the prey; he devoured men. 7He knew their palaces, and laid waste their cities; and the land was desolate, and its fullness, because of the noise of his roaring. 8Then the nations set against him on every side from the provinces; and they spread their net over him; he was taken in their pit. 9They put him in a cage with hooks, and brought him to the king of Babylon; they brought him into strongholds, that his voice should no more be heard on the mountains of Israel. 10Your mother was like a vine, in your blood, planted by the waters: it was fruitful and full of branches by reason of many waters. 11It had strong rods for the scepters of those who bore rule, and their stature was exalted among the thick boughs, and they were seen in their height with the multitude of their branches. 12But it was plucked up in fury, it was cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up its fruit: its strong rods were broken off and withered; the fire consumed them. 13Now it is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and thirsty land. 14Fire is gone out of the rods of its branches, it has devoured its fruit, so that there is in it no strong rod to be a scepter to rule. This is a lamentation, and shall be for a lamentation.

Dit is een weeklage, en is tot een weeklage geworden.
