1Οκτώ ετών ηλικίας ήτο ο Ιωσίας ότε εβασίλευσε· και εβασίλευσεν εν Ιερουσαλήμ έτη τριάκοντα και εν. 2Και έπραξε το ευθές ενώπιον του Κυρίου, και περιεπάτησεν εν ταις οδοίς Δαβίδ του πατρός αυτού, και δεν εξέκλινε δεξιά η αριστερά. 3Και εν τω ογδόω έτει της βασιλείας αυτού, νέος ων έτι, ήρχισε να εκζητή τον Θεόν του Δαβίδ του πατρός αυτού· και εν τω δωδεκάτω έτει ήρχισε να καθαρίζη τον Ιούδαν και την Ιερουσαλήμ από των υψηλών τόπων και από των άλσεων και των γλυπτών και των χωνευτών. 4Και κατέστρεψαν έμπροσθεν αυτού τα θυσιαστήρια των Βααλείμ· και τα είδωλα τα υπεράνω αυτών κατεκρήμνισε· και τα άλση και τα γλυπτά και τα χωνευτά κατεσύντριψε και ελέπτυνεν εις σκόνην και έρριψεν αυτήν επί τα μνήματα των θυσιαζόντων εις αυτά. 5Και τα οστά των ιερέων έκαυσεν επί των θυσιαστηρίων αυτών και εκαθάρισε τον Ιούδαν και την Ιερουσαλήμ. 6Και έκαμε το αυτό εις τας πόλεις του Μανασσή και Εφραΐμ και Συμεών και μέχρι του Νεφθαλί, κύκλω των ηρημωμένων τόπων αυτών. 7Και αφού κατέστρεψε τα θυσιαστήρια και τα άλση και κατελέπτυνεν εις σκόνην τα γλυπτά και κατέκοψε πάντα τα είδωλα διά πάσης της γης του Ισραήλ, επέστρεψεν εις Ιερουσαλήμ. 8Εν δε τω δεκάτω ογδόω έτει της βασιλείας αυτού, αφού εκαθάρισε την γην και τον ναόν, εξαπέστειλε τον Σαφάν υιόν του Αζαλίου, και τον Μαασίαν τον άρχοντα της πόλεως, και τον Ιωάχ υιόν του Ιωάχαζ τον υπομνηματογράφον, διά να επισκευάσωσι τον οίκον Κυρίου του Θεού αυτού. 9Και ελθόντες προς Χελκίαν τον ιερέα τον μέγαν, παρέδωκαν το αργύριον το εισαχθέν εις τον οίκον του Θεού, το οποίον οι Λευΐται οι φυλάττοντες τας θύρας εσύναξαν εκ της χειρός του Μανασσή και Εφραΐμ και εκ παντός του επιλοίπου του Ισραήλ και εκ παντός του Ιούδα και Βενιαμίν· και επέστρεψαν εις Ιερουσαλήμ. 10Και έδωκαν αυτά εις την χείρα των ποιούντων τα έργα, των επιστατούντων εν τω οίκω του Κυρίου· οι δε ποιούντες τα έργα, τα οποία ειργάζοντο εν τω οίκω του Κυρίου, παρέδωκαν αυτό διά να επισκευάσωσι και να επιδιορθώσωσι τον οίκον· 11εις τους τέκτονας και οικοδόμους έδωκαν αυτό, διά ν' αγοράσωσι λίθους πελεκητούς και ξύλα διά δοκούς, και διά να στεγάσωσι τους οίκους τους οποίους κατέστρεψαν οι βασιλείς του Ιούδα. 12Και ειργάζοντο οι άνδρες το έργον εν πίστει· επιτηρηταί δε επ' αυτών ήσαν Ιαάθ και Οβαδίας, οι Λευΐται, εκ των υιών Μεραρί· και Ζαχαρίας και Μεσουλλάμ, εκ των υιών των Κααθιτών, διά να κατεπείγωσι το έργον· και εκ των Λευϊτών πάντες οι επιστήμονες μουσικών οργάνων. 13Ήσαν έτι επί των αχθοφόρων και εργοδιώκται πάντων των εργαζομένων, καθ' οποιανδήποτε υπηρεσίαν· και εκ των Λευϊτών ήσαν γραμματείς και επιστάται και θυρωροί. 14Και ενώ εξέφερον το αργύριον το εισαχθέν εις τον οίκον του Κυρίου, εύρηκε Χελκίας ο ιερεύς το βιβλίον του νόμου του Κυρίου, του δοθέντος διά χειρός του Μωϋσέως. 15Και απεκρίθη ο Χελκίας και είπε προς Σαφάν τον γραμματέα, εύρηκα βιβλίον του νόμου εν τω οίκω του Κυρίου. Και έδωκεν ο Χελκίας το βιβλίον εις τον Σαφάν. 16Και ο Σαφάν έφερε το βιβλίον προς τον βασιλέα και έπειτα έδωκε λόγον εις τον βασιλέα, λέγων, Οι δούλοί σου κάμνουσι παν το διορισθέν εις αυτούς· 17και ηρίθμησαν το αργύριον το ευρεθέν εν τω οίκω του Κυρίου, και παρέδωκαν αυτό εις την χείρα των επιστατών και εις την χείρα των ποιούντων τα έργα. 18Και απήγγειλε Σαφάν ο γραμματεύς προς τον βασιλέα, λέγων, Χελκίας ιερεύς έδωκεν εις εμέ βιβλίον. Και ανέγνωσεν αυτό ο Σαφάν ενώπιον του βασιλέως. 19Και ως ήκουσεν ο βασιλεύς τους λόγους του νόμου, διέσχισε τα ιμάτια αυτού. 20Και προσέταξεν ο βασιλεύς Χελκίαν και Αχικάμ τον υιόν του Σαφάν και Αβδών τον υιόν του Μιχαία και Σαφάν τον γραμματέα και Ασαΐαν τον δούλον του βασιλέως, λέγων, 21Υπάγετε, ερωτήσατε τον Κύριον περί εμού και περί των εναπολειφθέντων εν τω Ισραήλ και εν τω Ιούδα, περί των λόγων του βιβλίου του ευρεθέντος· διότι μεγάλη είναι η οργή του Κυρίου ήτις εξεχύθη εφ' ημάς, επειδή οι πατέρες ημών δεν εφύλαξαν τον λόγον του Κυρίου, ώστε να πράξωσι κατά πάντα τα γεγραμμένα εν τω βιβλίω τούτω. 22Τότε υπήγεν ο Χελκίας και οι παρά του βασιλέως προς Όλδαν την προφήτισσαν, την γυναίκα του Σαλλούμ υιού του Τικβά, υιού του Ασρά, του ιματιοφύλακος, κατώκει δε αύτη εν Ιερουσαλήμ, κατά το Μισνέ· και ελάλησαν προς αυτήν κατά ταύτα. 23Η δε είπε προς αυτούς· Ούτω λέγει Κύριος ο Θεός του Ισραήλ· Είπατε προς τον άνθρωπον όστις σας απέστειλε προς εμέ, 24Ούτω λέγει Κύριος· Ιδού, εγώ επιφέρω κακά επί τον τόπον τούτον και επί τους κατοίκους αυτού, πάσας τας κατάρας τας γεγραμμένας εν τω βιβλίω, το οποίον ανέγνωσαν ενώπιον του βασιλέως του Ιούδα· 25επειδή με εγκατέλιπον και εθυμίασαν εις άλλους θεούς, διά να με παροργίσωσι διά πάντα τα έργα των χειρών αυτών· διά τούτο θέλει εκχυθή ο θυμός μου επί τον τόπον τούτον και δεν θέλει σβεσθή. 26Προς δε τον βασιλέα του Ιούδα, όστις σας απέστειλε διά να ερωτήσητε τον Κύριον, ούτω θέλετε ειπεί προς αυτόν· Ούτω λέγει Κύριος ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, περί των λόγων τους οποίους ήκουσας· 27επειδή η καρδία σου ηπαλύνθη, και εταπεινώθης ενώπιον του Θεού, ότε ήκουσας τους λόγους αυτού εναντίον του τόπου τούτου και εναντίον των κατοίκων αυτού, και εταπεινώθης ενώπιόν μου και διέσχισας τα ιμάτιά σου και έκλαυσας ενώπιόν μου, διά τούτο και εγώ επήκουσα, λέγει Κύριος· 28ιδού, εγώ θέλω σε συνάξει εις τους πατέρας σου, και θέλεις συναχθή εις τον τάφον σου εν ειρήνη, και δεν θέλουσιν ιδεί οι οφθαλμοί σου πάντα τα κακά, τα οποία εγώ επιφέρω επί τον τόπον τούτον και επί τους κατοίκους αυτού. 1Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. 2He did that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh, and walked in the ways of David his father, and didn’t turn aside to the right hand or to the left. 3For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father; and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the Asherah poles, and the engraved images, and the molten images. 4They broke down the altars of the Baals in his presence; and the incense altars that were on high above them he cut down; and the Asherah poles, and the engraved images, and the molten images, he broke in pieces, and made dust of them, and strewed it on the graves of those who had sacrificed to them. 5He burnt the bones of the priests on their altars, and purged Judah and Jerusalem. 6He did this in the cities of Manasseh and Ephraim and Simeon, even to Naphtali, around in their ruins. 7He broke down the altars, and beat the Asherah poles and the engraved images into powder, and cut down all the incense altars throughout all the land of Israel, and returned to Jerusalem. 8Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair Yahweh’s house his God. 9They came to Hilkiah the high priest, and delivered the money that was brought into God’s house, which the Levites, the keepers of the threshold, had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin, and of the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 10They delivered it into the hand of the workmen who had the oversight of Yahweh’s house; and the workmen who labored in Yahweh’s house gave it to mend and repair the house; 11even to the carpenters and to the builders gave they it, to buy cut stone, and timber for couplings, and to make beams for the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed. 12The men did the work faithfully: and their overseers were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and others of the Levites, all who were skillful with instruments of music. 13Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and set forward all who did the work in every kind of service: and of the Levites there were scribes, and officers, and porters. 14When they brought out the money that was brought into Yahweh’s house, Hilkiah the priest found the book of Yahweh’s law given by Moses. 15Hilkiah answered Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the book of the law in Yahweh’s house.” Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan. 16Shaphan carried the book to the king, and moreover brought back word to the king, saying, “All that was committed to your servants, they are doing. 17They have emptied out the money that was found in Yahweh’s house, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and into the hand of the workmen.” 18Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has delivered me a book.” Shaphan read therein before the king. 19When the king had heard the words of the law, he tore his clothes. 20The king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying, 21“Go inquire of Yahweh for me, and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found; for great is the wrath of Yahweh that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept Yahweh’s word, to do according to all that is written in this book.” 22So Hilkiah, and they whom the king had commanded, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she lived in Jerusalem in the second quarter;) and they spoke to her to that effect. 23She said to them, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: ‘Tell the man who sent you to me, 24“Thus says Yahweh, ‘Behold, I will bring evil on this place, and on its inhabitants, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah. 25Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore is my wrath poured out on this place, and it shall not be quenched.’”’ 26But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Yahweh, thus you shall tell him, ‘Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: “As touching the words which you have heard, 27because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before God, when you heard his words against this place, and against its inhabitants, and have humbled yourself before me, and have torn your clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard you,” says Yahweh. 28“Behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, neither shall your eyes see all the evil that I will bring on this place, and on its inhabitants.”’” They brought back word to the king. 29Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 30The king went up to Yahweh’s house, and all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, both great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in Yahweh’s house. 31The king stood in his place, and made a covenant before Yahweh, to walk after Yahweh, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant that were written in this book. 32He caused all who were found in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand. The inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers. 33Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all who were found in Israel to serve, even to serve Yahweh their God. All his days they didn’t depart from following Yahweh, the God of their fathers.

Zij nu woonde te Jeruzalem in het tweede deel; en zij spraken zulks tot haar. 23En zij zeide tot hen: Zo zegt de HEERE, de God Israels: Zegt den man, die ulieden tot mij gezonden heeft: 24Zo zegt de HEERE: Zie, Ik zal kwaad over deze plaats en over haar inwoners brengen; al de vloeken, die geschreven zijn in het boek, dat men voor het aangezicht des konings van Juda gelezen heeft. 25Daarom dat zij Mij verlaten, en anderen goden gerookt hebben, opdat zij Mij tot toorn verwekten met alle werken hunner handen; zo zal Mijn grimmigheid uitgegoten worden tegen deze plaats, en niet uitgeblust worden. 26Maar tot den koning van Juda, die ulieden gezonden heeft, om den HEERE te vragen, tot hem zult gij alzo zeggen: Zo zegt de HEERE, de God Israels: Aangaande de woorden, die gij hebt gehoord; 27Omdat uw hart week geworden is, en gij u voor het aangezicht Gods vernederd hebt, als gij Zijn woorden hoordet tegen deze plaats en tegen haar inwoners, en hebt u vernederd voor Mijn aangezicht, en uw klederen gescheurd, en geweend voor Mijn aangezicht, zo heb Ik u ook verhoord, spreekt de HEERE. 28Zie, Ik zal u verzamelen tot uw vaderen, en gij zult met vrede in uw graf verzameld worden, en uw ogen zullen al dat kwaad niet zien, dat Ik over deze plaats en over haar inwoners brengen zal. En zij brachten den koning dit antwoord weder. 29Toen zond de koning henen, en verzamelde alle oudsten van Juda en Jeruzalem. 30En de koning ging op in het huis des HEEREN, en al de mannen van Juda en de inwoners van Jeruzalem, mitsgaders de priesters en de Levieten, en al het volk, van den grote tot den kleine toe; en men las voor hun oren al de woorden van het boek des verbonds, dat in het huis des HEEREN gevonden was. 31En de koning stond in zijn standplaats, en maakte een verbond voor des HEEREN aangezicht, om den HEERE na te wandelen, en om Zijn geboden, en Zijn getuigenissen, en Zijn inzettingen, met zijn ganse hart en met zijn ganse ziel, te onderhouden, doende de woorden des verbonds, die in datzelve boek geschreven zijn. 32En hij deed allen, die te Jeruzalem en in Benjamin gevonden werden, staan; en de inwoners van Jeruzalem deden naar het verbond van God, den God hunner vaderen. 33Josia dan deed alle gruwelen weg uit alle landen, die der kinderen Israels waren, en maakte allen, die in Israel gevonden werden, te dienen; te dienen den HEERE, hun God; al zijn dagen weken zij niet af van den HEERE, den God hunner vaderen, na te volgen.
