1Mga minamahal, huwag kayong magsipaniwala sa bawa't espiritu, kundi inyong subukin ang mga espiritu, kung sila'y sa Dios: sapagka't maraming nagsilitaw na mga bulaang propeta sa sanglibutan. 2Dito'y nakikilala ninyo ang Espiritu ng Dios: ang bawa't espiritung nagpapahayag na si Jesucristo ay naparitong nasa laman ay sa Dios: 3At ang bawa't espiritung hindi ipinahahayag si Jesus, ay hindi sa Dios: at ito ang sa anticristo, na inyong narinig na darating; at ngayo'y nasa sanglibutan na. 4Kayo'y sa Dios, mumunti kong mga anak, at inyong dinaig sila: sapagka't lalong dakila siyang nasa inyo kay sa nasa sanglibutan. 5Sila'y sa sanglibutan: kaya't tungkol sa sanglibutan ang sinasalita nila, at sila'y dinidinig ng sanglibutan. 6Tayo nga'y sa Dios: ang nakakakilala sa Dios ay dumirinig sa atin; ang hindi sa Dios ay hindi dumirinig sa atin. Dito'y ating nakikilala ang espiritu ng katotohanan, at ang espiritu ng kamalian. 7Mga minamahal, mangagibigan tayo sa isa't isa: sapagka't ang pagibig ay sa Dios; at ang bawa't umiibig ay ipinanganak ng Dios, at nakakakilala sa Dios. 8Ang hindi umiibig ay hindi nakakakilala sa Dios; sapagka't ang Dios ay pagibig. 9Dito nahayag ang pagibig ng Dios sa atin, sapagka't sinugo ng Dios ang kaniyang bugtong na Anak sa sanglibutan upang tayo'y mabuhay sa pamamagitan niya. 10Narito ang pagibig, hindi sa tayo'y umibig sa Dios, kundi siya ang umibig sa atin, at sinugo ang kaniyang Anak na pangpalubagloob sa ating mga kasalanan. 11Mga minamahal, kung tayo'y inibig ng Dios ng gayon, ay nararapat na mangagibigan din naman tayo. 12Sinoman ay hindi nakakita kailan man sa Dios: kung tayo'y nangagiibigan, ang Dios ay nananahan sa atin, at ang kaniyang pagibig ay nagiging sakdal sa atin: 13Dito'y nakikilala natin na tayo'y nangananahan sa kaniya at siya'y sa atin, sapagka't binigyan niya tayo ng kaniyang Espiritu. 14At nakita natin at sinasaksihan na sinugo ng Ama ang Anak upang maging Tagapagligtas ng sanglibutan. 15Ang sinomang nagpapahayag na si Jesus ay Anak ng Dios, ang Dios ay nananahan sa kaniya, at siya'y sa Dios. 16At ating nakilala at ating sinampalatayanan ang pagibig ng Dios sa atin. Ang Dios ay pagibig; at ang nananahan sa pagibig ay nananahan sa Dios, at ang Dios ay nananahan sa kaniya. 17Dito'y naging sakdal ang pagibig sa atin, upang tayo'y magkaroon ng pagkakatiwala sa araw ng paghuhukom; sapagka't kung ano siya, ay gayon din naman tayo sa sanglibutang ito. 18Walang takot sa pagibig: kundi ang sakdal na pagibig ay nagpapalayas ng takot, sapagka't ang takot ay may kaparusahan; at ang natatakot ay hindi pa pinasasakdal sa pagibig. 19Tayo'y nagsisiibig, sapagka't siya'y unang umibig sa atin. 20Kung sinasabi ng sinoman, Ako'y umiibig sa Dios, at napopoot sa kaniyang kapatid, ay sinungaling; sapagka't ang hindi umiibig sa kaniyang kapatid na kaniyang nakita, ay paanong makaiibig siya sa Dios na hindi niya nakita? 21At ang utos na itong mula sa kaniya ay nasa atin, na ang umiibig sa Dios ay dapat umibig sa kaniyang kapatid.

1Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3and every spirit who doesn’t confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God, and this is the spirit of the Antichrist, of whom you have heard that it comes. Now it is in the world already. 4You are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world. 5They are of the world. Therefore they speak of the world, and the world hears them. 6We are of God. He who knows God listens to us. He who is not of God doesn’t listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. 7Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves has been born of God, and knows God. 8He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, for God is love. 9By this God’s love was revealed in us, that God has sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11Beloved, if God loved us in this way, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God remains in us, and his love has been perfected in us. 13By this we know that we remain in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as the Savior of the world. 15Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him, and he in God. 16We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him. 17In this love has been made perfect among us, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as he is, even so are we in this world. 18There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love. 19We love him, because he first loved us. 20If a man says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who doesn’t love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? 21This commandment we have from him, that he who loves God should also love his brother.

1Geliefden, gelooft niet een iegelijken geest, maar beproeft de geesten, of zij uit God zijn; want vele valse profeten zijn uitgegaan in de wereld. 2Hieraan kent gij den Geest van God: alle geest, die belijdt, dat Jezus Christus in het vlees gekomen is, die is uit God; 3En alle geest, die niet belijdt, dat Jezus Christus in het vlees gekomen is, die is uit God niet; maar dit is de geest van den antichrist, welken geest gij gehoord hebt, dat komen zal, en is nu alrede in de wereld. 4Kinderkens, gij zijt uit God, en hebt hen overwonnen; want Hij is meerder, Die in u is, dan die in de wereld is. 5Zij zijn uit de wereld, daarom spreken zij uit de wereld, en de wereld hoort hen. 6Wij zijn uit God. Die God kent, hoort ons; die uit God niet is, hoort ons niet. Hieruit kennen wij den geest der waarheid, en den geest der dwaling. 7Geliefden! Laat ons elkander liefhebben, want de liefde is uit God; en een iegelijk, die liefheeft, is uit God geboren, en kent God; 8Die niet liefheeft, die heeft God niet gekend; want God is liefde. 9Hierin is de liefde Gods jegens ons geopenbaard, dat God Zijn eniggeboren Zoon gezonden heeft in de wereld, opdat wij zouden leven door Hem. 10Hierin is de liefde, niet dat wij God liefgehad hebben, maar dat Hij ons lief heeft gehad, en Zijn Zoon gezonden heeft tot een verzoening voor onze zonden. 11Geliefden, indien God ons alzo lief heeft gehad, zo zijn ook wij schuldig elkander lief te hebben. 12Niemand heeft ooit God aanschouwd; indien wij elkander liefhebben, zo blijft God in ons, en Zijn liefde is in ons volmaakt. 13Hieraan kennen wij, dat wij in Hem blijven, en Hij in ons, omdat Hij ons van Zijn Geest gegeven heeft. 14En wij hebben het aanschouwd, en getuigen, dat de Vader Zijn Zoon gezonden heeft tot een Zaligmaker der wereld. 15Zo wie beleden zal hebben, dat Jezus de Zoon van God is, God blijft in hem, en hij in God. 16En wij hebben gekend en geloofd de liefde, die God tot ons heeft. God is liefde; en die in de liefde blijft, blijft in God, en God in hem. 17Hierin is de liefde bij ons volmaakt, opdat wij vrijmoedigheid mogen hebben in den dag des oordeels, namelijk dat gelijk Hij is, wij ook zijn in deze wereld. 18Er is in de liefde geen vrees, maar de volmaakte liefde drijft de vrees buiten; want de vrees heeft pijn, en die vreest, is niet volmaakt in de liefde. 19Wij hebben Hem lief, omdat Hij ons eerst liefgehad heeft. 20Indien iemand zegt: Ik heb God lief; en haat zijn broeder, die is een leugenaar; want die zijn broeder niet liefheeft, dien hij gezien heeft, hoe kan hij God liefhebben, Dien hij niet gezien heeft? 21En dit gebod hebben wij van Hem, namelijk dat die God liefheeft, ook zijn broeder liefhebbe.
