1Mafarisayo na Masadukayo wakamjia Yesu na kumjaribu kwa kumwomba awaonyeshe ishara kutoka mbinguni. 2Yesu akawajibu, “Ifikapo jioni, mnasema, ‘Hali ya hewa itakuwa nzuri, kwa kuwa anga ni nyekundu.’ 3Nanyi wakati wa asubuhi mnasema, ‘Leo kutakuwa na dhoruba, kwa sababu anga ni nyekundu na mawingu yametanda.’ Mnajua jinsi ya kupambanua kule kuonekana kwa anga, lakini hamwezi kupambanua dalili za nyakati. 4Kizazi kiovu na cha uzinzi kinatafuta ishara, lakini hakitapewa ishara yoyote isipokuwa ishara ya Yona.” Yesu akawaacha, akaenda zake. 5Wanafunzi wake walipofika ngʼambo ya bahari, walikuwa wamesahau kuchukua mikate. 6Yesu akawaambia, “Jihadharini. Mbona mnajadiliana miongoni mwenu kuhusu kutokuwa na mikate? 9Je, bado hamwelewi? Je, hamkumbuki ile mikate mitano iliyolisha watu 5,000 na idadi ya vikapu vingapi vya mabaki mlivyokusanya? 10Au ile mikate saba iliyolisha watu 4,000 na idadi ya vikapu vingapi vya mabaki mlivyokusanya? 11Inakuwaje mnashindwa kuelewa kwamba nilikuwa sisemi nanyi habari za mikate? Jilindeni na chachu ya Mafarisayo na Masadukayo.” 12Ndipo wakaelewa kwamba alikuwa hasemi juu ya chachu ya kutengeneza mikate, bali juu ya mafundisho ya Mafarisayo na Masadukayo. 13Basi Yesu alipofika katika eneo la Kaisaria-Filipi, akawauliza wanafunzi wake, “Watu husema kwamba mimi Mwana wa Adamu ni nani?” 14Wakamjibu, “Baadhi husema ni Yohana Mbatizaji; wengine husema ni Eliya; na bado wengine husema ni Yeremia au mmojawapo wa manabii.” 15Akawauliza, “Je, ninyi mnasema mimi ni nani?” 16Simoni Petro akamjibu, “Wewe ndiwe Kristo, Mwana wa Mungu aliye hai.” 17Naye Yesu akamwambia, “Heri wewe, Simoni Bar-Yona, kwa maana hili halikufunuliwa kwako na mwanadamu, bali na Baba yangu aliye mbinguni. 18Nami nakuambia, wewe ndiwe Petro na juu ya mwamba huu nitalijenga kanisa langu, hata malango ya Kuzimu hayataweza kulishinda. 19Nitakupa funguo za Ufalme wa mbinguni, na lolote utakalolifunga duniani litakuwa limefungwa Mbinguni, nalo lolote utakalofungua duniani litakuwa limefunguliwa mbinguni.” 20Kisha akawakataza wanafunzi wake wasimwambie mtu yeyote kwamba yeye ndiye Kristo. 21Tangu wakati huo, Yesu alianza kuwaeleza wanafunzi wake kwamba hana budi kwenda Yerusalemu na kupata mateso mengi mikononi mwa wazee, viongozi wa makuhani, na walimu wa sheria, na kwamba itampasa auawe lakini siku ya tatu kufufuliwa. 22Petro akamchukua kando, akaanza kumkemea akisema, “Haiwezekani, Bwana! Moyo wako hauwazi yaliyo ya Mungu, bali ya wanadamu.” 24Ndipo Yesu akawaambia wanafunzi wake, “Mtu yeyote akitaka kunifuata, ni lazima ajikane mwenyewe, auchukue msalaba wake, anifuate. 25Kwa maana yeyote anayetaka kuyaokoa maisha yake atayapoteza, lakini yeyote atakayeyapoteza maisha yake kwa ajili yangu atayapata. 26Kwa maana, je, itamfaidi nini mtu kuupata ulimwengu wote, lakini akayapoteza maisha yake? 1The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing him, asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 2But he answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ 3In the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Hypocrites! You know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but you can’t discern the signs of the times! 4An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and there will be no sign given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” He left them, and departed. 5The disciples came to the other side and had forgotten to take bread. 6Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7They reasoned among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” 8Jesus, perceiving it, said, “Why do you reason among yourselves, you of little faith, ‘because you have brought no bread?’ 9Don’t you yet perceive, neither remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up? 10Nor the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up? 11How is it that you don’t perceive that I didn’t speak to you concerning bread? But beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12Then they understood that he didn’t tell them to beware of the yeast of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. 13Now when Jesus came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” 14They said, “Some say John the Baptizer, some, Elijah, and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” 15He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18I also tell you that you are Peter,and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hadeswill not prevail against it. 19I will give to you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven; and whatever you release on earth will have been released in heaven.” 20Then he commanded the disciples that they should tell no one that he was Jesus the Christ. 21From that time, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up. 22Peter took him aside, and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This will never be done to you.” 23But he turned, and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of men.” 24Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever will lose his life for my sake will find it. 26For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life? 27For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will render to everyone according to his deeds. 28Most certainly I tell you, there are some standing here who will in no way taste of death, until they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.”

Gij geveinsden! het aanschijn des hemels weet gij wel te onderscheiden, en kunt gij de tekenen der tijden niet onderscheiden? 4Het boos en overspelig geslacht verzoekt een teken; en hun zal geen teken gegeven worden, dan het teken van Jona, den profeet. En hen verlatende, ging Hij weg. 5En als Zijn discipelen op de andere zijde gekomen waren, hadden zij vergeten broden mede te nemen. 6En Jezus zeide tot hen: Ziet toe, en wacht u van den zuurdesem der Farizeen en Sadduceen. 7En zij overlegden bij zichzelven, zeggende: Het is omdat wij geen broden mede genomen hebben. 8En Jezus, dat wetende, zeide tot hen: Wat overlegt gij bij uzelven, gij kleingelovigen! dat gij geen broden mede genomen hebt? 9Verstaat gij nog niet? en gedenkt gij niet aan de vijf broden der vijf duizend mannen; en hoevele korven gij opnaamt? 10Noch aan de zeven broden der vier duizend mannen, en hoevele manden gij opnaamt? 11Hoe verstaat gij niet, dat Ik u van geen brood gesproken heb, als Ik zeide, dat gij u wachten zoudt van den zuurdesem der Farizeen en Sadduceen. 12Toen verstonden zij, dat Hij niet gezegd had, dat zij zich wachten zouden van den zuurdesem des broods, maar van de leer der Farizeen en Sadduceen? 13Als nu Jezus gekomen was in de delen van Cesarea Filippi, vraagde Hij Zijn discipelen, zeggende: Wie zeggen de mensen, dat Ik, de Zoon des mensen, ben? 14En zij zeiden: Sommigen: Johannes de Doper; en anderen: Elias; en anderen: Jeremia of een van de profeten. 15Hij zeide tot hen: Maar gij, wie zegt gij, dat Ik ben? 16En Simon Petrus, antwoordende, zeide: Gij zijt de Christus, de Zoon des levenden Gods. 17En Jezus, antwoordende, zeide tot hem: Zalig zijt gij, Simon, Bar-Jona! want vlees en bloed heeft u dat niet geopenbaard, maar Mijn Vader, Die in de hemelen is. 18En Ik zeg u ook, dat gij zijt Petrus, en op deze petra zal Ik Mijn gemeente bouwen, en de poorten der hel zullen dezelve niet overweldigen. 19En Ik zal u geven de sleutelen van het Koninkrijk der hemelen; en zo wat gij zult binden op de aarde, zal in de hemelen gebonden zijn; en zo wat gij ontbinden zult op de aarde, zal in de hemelen ontbonden zijn. 20Toen verbood Hij Zijn discipelen, dat zij iemand zeggen zouden, dat Hij was Jezus, de Christus. 21Van toen aan begon Jezus Zijn discipelen te vertonen, dat Hij moest heengaan naar Jeruzalem, en veel lijden van de ouderlingen, en overpriesters, en Schriftgeleerden, en gedood worden, en ten derden dage opgewekt worden. 22En Petrus, Hem tot zich genomen hebbende, begon Hem te bestraffen, zeggende: Heere, wees U genadig! dit zal U geenszins geschieden. 23Maar Hij, Zich omkerende, zeide tot Petrus: Ga weg achter Mij, satanas! gij zijt Mij een aanstoot, want gij verzint niet de dingen, die Gods zijn, maar die der mensen zijn. 24Toen zeide Jezus tot Zijn discipelen: Zo iemand achter Mij wil komen, die verloochene zichzelven, en neme zijn kruis op, en volge Mij. 25Want zo wie zijn leven zal willen behouden, die zal hetzelve verliezen; maar zo wie zijn leven verliezen zal, om Mijnentwil, die zal hetzelve vinden. 26Want wat baat het een mens, zo hij de gehele wereld gewint, en lijdt schade zijner ziel? Of wat zal een mens geven, tot lossing van zijn ziel? 27Want de Zoon des mensen zal komen in de heerlijkheid Zijns Vaders, met Zijn engelen, en alsdan zal Hij een iegelijk vergelden naar zijn doen. 28Voorwaar zeg Ik u: Er zijn sommigen van die hier staan, dewelke den dood niet smaken zullen, totdat zij den Zoon des mensen zullen hebben zien komen in Zijn Koninkrijk.
