1E havia um homem de Benjamim, homem valente, o qual se chamava Quis, filho de Abiel, filho de Zeror, filho de Becorate, filho de Afia, filho de um homem de Benjamim. 2E tinha ele um filho que se chamava Saul, rapaz e belo, que entre os filhos de Israel não havia outro mais belo que ele; do ombro acima sobrepujava a qualquer um do povo. 3E haviam-se perdido as asnas de Quis, pai de Saul; pelo que disse Quis a Saul seu filho: Toma agora contigo algum dos criados, e levanta-te, e vai a buscar as asnas. 4E ele passou ao monte de Efraim, e dali à terra de Salisa, e não as acharam. Passaram logo pela terra de Saalim, e tampouco. Depois passaram pela terra de Benjamim, e não as encontraram. 5E quando vieram à terra de Zufe, Saul disse a seu criado que tinha consigo: Vem, voltemo-nos; porque talvez meu pai, deixado o cuidado das asnas, estará aflito por nós. 6E ele lhe respondeu: Eis que agora há nesta cidade um homem de Deus, que é homem ilustre: todas as coisas que ele disser, sem dúvida virão a suceder. Vamos pois ali; talvez nos ensinará nosso caminho por onde havemos de ir. 7E Saul respondeu a seu criado: Vamos agora: mas que levaremos ao homem? Porque o pão de nossos alforjes se acabou, e não temos que presentear ao homem de Deus: que temos? 8Então voltou o criado a responder a Saul, dizendo: Eis que se acha em minha mão a quarta parte de um siclo de prata: isto darei ao homem de Deus, porque nos declare nosso caminho. 9(Antigamente em Israel qualquer um que ia a consultar a Deus, dizia assim: Vinde e vamos até o vidente: porque o que agora se chama profeta, antigamente era chamado vidente). 10Disse então Saul a seu criado: Bem dizes; eia, pois, vamos. E foram à cidade de onde estava o homem de Deus. 11E quando subiam pela encosta da cidade, acharam umas moças que saíam por água, às quais disseram: Está neste lugar o vidente? 12E elas respondendo-lhes, disseram: Sim; ei-lo aqui diante de ti: apressa-te, pois, porque hoje veio à cidade porque o povo tem hoje sacrifício no alto. 13E quando entrardes na cidade, vós o encontrareis logo, antes que suba ao alto a comer; pois o povo não comerá até que ele tenha vindo, porquanto ele deve abençoar o sacrifício, e depois comerão os convidados. Subi, pois agora, porque agora o achareis. 14Eles então subiram à cidade; e quando em meio da cidade estiveram, eis que Samuel que diante deles saía para subir ao alto. 15E um dia antes que Saul viesse, o SENHOR havia revelado ao ouvido de Samuel, dizendo: 16Amanhã a esta mesma hora eu enviarei a ti um homem da terra de Benjamim, ao qual ungirás por príncipe sobre meu povo Israel, e salvará meu povo da mão dos filisteus: pois eu olhei a meu povo, porque seu clamor há chegado até mim. 17E logo que Samuel viu a Saul, o SENHOR lhe disse: Eis que este é o homem do qual te falei; este dominará a meu povo. 18E chegando Saul a Samuel em meio da porta, disse-lhe: Rogo-te que me ensines onde está a casa do vidente. 19E Samuel respondeu a Saul, e disse: Eu sou o vidente: sobe diante de mim ao alto, e comei hoje comigo, e pela manhã te despacharei, e te revelarei tudo o que está em teu coração. 20E das asnas que se te perderam hoje há três dias, deixa de se preocupar com elas, porque se acharam. Mas a quem é todo o desejo de Israel, se não a ti e a toda a casa de teu pai? 21E Saul respondeu, e disse: Não sou eu filho de Benjamim, das menores tribos de Israel? e minha família não é a mais pequena de todas as famílias da tribo de Benjamim? por que pois me disseste coisa semelhante? 22E tomando Samuel a Saul e a seu criado, meteu-os na sala, e deu-lhes lugar à cabeceira dos convidados, que eram como uns trinta homens. 23E disse Samuel ao cozinheiro: Traze aqui a porção que te dei, a qual te disse que guardasses à parte. 24Então levantou o cozinheiro uma coxa, com o que estava sobre ela, e a pôs diante de Saul. E Samuel disse: Eis que o que estava reservado: põe-o diante de ti, e come; porque foi intencionalmente guardado para ti, quando disse: Eu convidei ao povo. E Saul comeu aquele dia com Samuel. 25E quando houveram descido do alto à cidade, ele falou com Saul no terraço. 26E ao outro dia madrugaram: e quando ao raiar da alva, Samuel chamou a Saul, que estava no terraço; e disse: Levanta-te, para que te despache. Levantou-se logo Saul, e saíram fora ambos, ele e Samuel. 27E descendo eles ao fim da cidade, disse Samuel a Saul: Dize ao jovem que vá diante, (e adiantou-se o jovem); mas espera tu um pouco para que te declare palavra de Deus.
1Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a Benjamite, a mighty man of valor. 2He had a son, whose name was Saul, an impressive young man; and there was not among the children of Israel a better person than he. From his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people. 3The donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. Kish said to Saul his son, “Take now one of the servants with you, and arise, go seek the donkeys.” 4He passed through the hill country of Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they didn’t find them: then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and there they weren’t there: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they didn’t find them. 5When they had come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come, and let us return, lest my father stop caring about the donkeys, and be anxious for us.” 6He said to him, “See now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is a man who is held in honor. All that he says comes surely to pass. Now let us go there. Perhaps he can tell us concerning our journey whereon we go.” 7Then Saul said to his servant, “But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? For the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?” 8The servant answered Saul again, and said, “Behold, I have in my hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.” 9(In earlier times in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he said, “Come, and let us go to the seer”; for he who is now called a prophet was before called a Seer.) 10Then Saul said to his servant, “Well said. Come, let us go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was. 11As they went up the ascent to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said to them, “Is the seer here?” 12They answered them, and said, “He is. Behold, he is before you. Hurry now, for he has come today into the city; for the people have a sacrifice today in the high place. 13As soon as you have come into the city, you shall immediately find him, before he goes up to the high place to eat; for the people will not eat until he come, because he blesses the sacrifice. Afterwards those who are invited eat. Now therefore go up; for at this time you shall find him.” 14They went up to the city. As they came within the city, behold, Samuel came out toward them, to go up to the high place. 15Now Yahweh had revealed to Samuel a day before Saul came, saying, 16“Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel; and he shall save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked on my people, because their cry has come to me.” 17When Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh said to him, “Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! this same shall have authority over my people.” 18Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, “Please tell me where the seer’s house is.” 19Samuel answered Saul, and said, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for you shall eat with me today. In the morning I will let you go, and will tell you all that is in your heart. 20As for your donkeys who were lost three days ago, don’t set your mind on them; for they are found. For whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for you, and for all your father’s house?” 21Saul answered, “Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? And my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak to me like this?” 22Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the guest room, and made them sit in the best place among those who were invited, who were about thirty persons. 23Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion which I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Set it aside.’” 24The cook took up the thigh, and that which was on it, and set it before Saul. Samuel said, “Behold, that which has been reserved! Set it before yourself and eat; because for the appointed time has it been kept for you, for I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul ate with Samuel that day. 25When they had come down from the high place into the city, he talked with Saul on the housetop. 26They arose early: and about daybreak, Samuel called to Saul on the housetop, saying, “Get up, that I may send you away.” Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad. 27As they were going down at the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant pass on before us” (and he passed on), “but stand still first, that I may cause you to hear the word of God.”

Want het brood is weg uit onze vaten, en wij hebben geen gaven, om den man Gods te brengen; wat hebben wij? 8En de jongen antwoordde Saul verder en zeide: Zie, er vindt zich in mijn hand het vierendeel eens zilveren sikkels; dat zal ik den man Gods geven, opdat hij ons onzen weg wijze. 9(Eertijds zeide een ieder aldus in Israel, als hij ging om God te vragen: Komt en laat ons gaan tot den ziener; want die heden een profeet genoemd wordt, die werd eertijds een ziener genoemd.) 10Toen zeide Saul tot zijn jongen: Uw woord is goed, kom, laat ons gaan. En zij gingen naar de stad, waar de man Gods was. 11Als zij opklommen door den opgang der stad, zo vonden zij maagden, die uitgingen om water te putten; en zij zeiden tot haar: Is de ziener hier? 12Toen antwoordden zij hun, en zeiden: Ziet, hij is voor uw aangezicht; haast u nu, want hij is heden in de stad gekomen, dewijl het volk heden een offerande heeft op de hoogte. 13Wanneer gijlieden in de stad komt, zo zult gij hem vinden, eer hij opgaat op de hoogte om te eten; want het volk zal niet eten, totdat hij komt, want hij zegent het offer, daarna eten de genodigden; daarom gaat nu op, want hem, als heden zult gij hem vinden. 14Alzo gingen zij op in de stad. Toen zij in het midden der stad kwamen, ziet, zo ging Samuel uit hun tegemoet, om op te gaan naar de hoogte. 15Want de HEERE had het voor Samuels oor geopenbaard, een dag eer Saul kwam, zeggende: 16Morgen omtrent dezen tijd zal Ik tot u zenden een man uit het land van Benjamin, dien zult gij ten voorganger zalven over Mijn volk Israel; en hij zal Mijn volk verlossen uit der Filistijnen hand, want Ik heb Mijn volk aangezien, dewijl deszelfs geroep tot Mij gekomen is. 17Toen Samuel Saul aanzag, zo antwoordde hem de HEERE: Zie, dit is de man, van welken Ik u gezegd heb: Deze zal over Mijn volk heersen. 18En Saul naderde tot Samuel in het midden der poort, en zeide: Wijs mij toch, waar is hier het huis des zieners? 19En Samuel antwoordde Saul en zeide: Ik ben de ziener; ga op voor mijn aangezicht op de hoogte, dat gijlieden heden met mij eet; zo zal ik u morgen vroeg laten gaan, en alles, wat in uw hart is, zal ik u te kennen geven. 20Want de ezelinnen aangaande, die gij heden den derden dag verloren hebt, zet uw hart daarop niet, want zij zijn gevonden; en wiens zal zijn al het gewenste, dat in Israel is? Is het niet van u, en van het ganse huis uws vaders? 21Toen antwoordde Saul, en zeide: Ben ik niet een zoon van Jemini, van de kleinsten der stammen van Israel? en mijn geslacht is het niet het kleinste van al de geslachten van den stam van Benjamin? Waarom spreekt gij mij dan aan met zulke woorden? 22Samuel dan nam Saul en zijn jongen, en hij bracht ze in de kamer; en hij gaf hun plaats aan het opperste der genodigden; die nu waren omtrent dertig man. 23Toen zeide Samuel tot den kok: Lang dat stuk, hetwelk Ik u gegeven heb, waarvan ik tot u zeide: Zet het bij u weg. 24De kok nu bracht een schouder op, met wat daaraan was, en zette het voor Saul; en hij zeide: Zie, dit is het overgeblevene; zet het voor u, eet, want het is ter bestemder tijd voor u bewaard, als ik zeide: Ik heb het volk genodigd. Alzo at Saul met Samuel op dien dag. 25Daarna gingen zij af van de hoogte in de stad; en hij sprak met Saul op het dak. 26En zij stonden vroeg op; en het geschiedde, omtrent den opgang des dageraads, zo riep Samuel Saul op het dak, zeggende: Sta op, en zij beiden gingen uit, hij en Samuel, naar buiten. 27Toen zij afgegaan waren aan het einde der stad, zo zeide Samuel tot Saul: Zeg den jongen, dat hij voor onze aangezichten heenga; toen ging hij heen; maar sta gij als nu stil, en ik zal u Gods woord doen horen.
