1E esteve a arca do SENHOR na terra dos filisteus sete meses. 2Então os filisteus, chamando os sacerdotes e adivinhos, perguntaram: Que faremos da arca do SENHOR? Declarai-nos como a devemos tornar a enviar a seu lugar. 3E eles disseram: Se enviais a arca do Deus de Israel, não a envieis vazia; mas lhe pagareis a expiação: e então sereis sãos, e conhecereis por que não se afastou de vós sua mão. 4E eles disseram: E que será a expiação que lhe pagaremos? E eles responderam: Conforme o número dos príncipes dos filisteus, cinco chagas de ouro, e cinco ratos de ouro, porque a mesma praga que todos têm, têm também vossos príncipes. 5Fareis, pois, as formas de vossas chagas, e as formas de vossos ratos que destroem a terra, e dareis glória ao Deus de Israel: talvez aliviará sua mão de sobre vós, e de sobre vossos deuses, e de sobre vossa terra. 6Mas por que endureceis vosso coração, como os egípcios e Faraó endureceram seu coração? Depois que os houve assim tratado, não os deixaram que se fossem, e se foram? 7Fazei, pois, agora um carro novo, e tomai logo duas vacas que criem, às quais não haja sido posto jugo, e preparai as vacas ao carro, e fazei voltar de detrás delas seus bezerros a casa. 8Tomareis logo a arca do SENHOR, e a poreis sobre o carro; e ponde em uma caixa ao lado dela as joias de ouro que lhe pagais em expiação: e a deixareis que se vá. 9E olhai: se sobe pelo caminho de seu termo a Bete-Semes, ele nos fez este mal tão grande; e se não, teremos certeza de que não foi sua mão que nos feriu, mas nos foi coincidência. 10E aqueles homens o fizeram assim; pois tomando duas vacas que criavam, prepararam-nas ao carro, e encerraram em casa seus bezerros. 11Logo puseram a arca do SENHOR sobre o carro, e a caixa com os ratos de ouro e com as formas de suas chagas. 12E as vacas se encaminharam pelo caminho de Bete-Semes, e iam por um mesmo caminho andando e bramando, sem desviar-se nem à direita nem à esquerda: e os príncipes dos filisteus foram atrás elas até o termo de Bete-Semes. 13E os de Bete-Semes ceifavam o trigo no vale; e levantando seus olhos viram a arca, e alegraram-se quando a viram. 14E o carro veio ao campo de Josué Bete-Semita, e parou ali porque ali havia uma grande pedra; e eles cortaram a madeira do carro, e ofereceram as vacas em holocausto ao SENHOR. 15E os levitas baixaram a arca do SENHOR, e a caixa que estava junto a ela, na qual estavam as joias de ouro, e puseram-nas sobre aquela grande pedra; e os homens de Bete-Semes sacrificaram holocaustos e mataram vítimas ao SENHOR naquele dia. 16O qual vendo os cinco príncipes dos filisteus, voltaram a Ecrom o mesmo dia. 17Estas, pois, são as chagas de ouro que pagaram os filisteus ao SENHOR em expiação: por Asdode uma, por Gaza uma, por Asquelom uma, por Gate uma, por Ecrom uma; 18E ratos de ouro conforme ao número de todas as cidades dos filisteus pertencentes aos cinco príncipes, desde as cidades fortes até as aldeias sem muro; e até a grande pedra sobre a qual puseram a arca do SENHOR, pedra que está no campo de Josué, bete-semita, até hoje. 19Então feriu Deus aos de Bete-Semes, porque haviam olhado no arca do SENHOR; feriu no povo cinquenta mil e setenta homens. E o povo pôs luto, porque o SENHOR lhe havia ferido de tão grande praga. 20E disseram os de Bete-Semes: Quem poderá estar diante do SENHOR o Deus santo? e a quem subirá desde nós? 21E enviaram mensageiros aos de Quriate-Jearim, dizendo: Os filisteus devolveram a arca do SENHOR: descei, pois, e levai-a a vós.
1Yahweh’s ark was in the country of the Philistines seven months. 2The Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, “What shall we do with Yahweh’s ark? Show us with which we shall send it to its place.” 3They said, “If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, don’t send it empty; but by all means return him a trespass offering: then you shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.” 4Then they said, “What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him?” They said, “Five golden tumors, and five golden mice, for the number of the lords of the Philistines; for one plague was on you all, and on your lords. 5Therefore you shall make images of your tumors, and images of your mice that mar the land; and you shall give glory to the God of Israel: perhaps he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land. 6Why then do you harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When he had worked wonderfully among them, didn’t they let the people go, and they departed? 7“Now therefore take and prepare yourselves a new cart, and two milk cows, on which there has come no yoke; and tie the cows to the cart, and bring their calves home from them; 8and take Yahweh’s ark, and lay it on the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which you return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by its side; and send it away, that it may go. 9Behold; if it goes up by the way of its own border to Beth Shemesh, then he has done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that struck us; it was a chance that happened to us.” 10The men did so, and took two milk cows, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home; 11and they put Yahweh’s ark on the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their tumors. 12The cows took the straight way by the way to Beth Shemesh; they went along the highway, lowing as they went, and didn’t turn aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them to the border of Beth Shemesh. 13They of Beth Shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley; and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it. 14The cart came into the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they split the wood of the cart, and offered up the cows for a burnt offering to Yahweh. 15The Levites took down Yahweh’s ark, and the coffer that was with it, in which the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth Shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day to Yahweh. 16When the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day. 17These are the golden tumors which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering to Yahweh: for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Ashkelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one; 18and the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fortified cities and of country villages, even to the great stone, whereon they set down Yahweh’s ark. That stone remains to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh. 19He struck of the men of Beth Shemesh, because they had looked into Yahweh’s ark, he struck of the people fifty thousand seventy men; and the people mourned, because Yahweh had struck the people with a great slaughter. 20The men of Beth Shemesh said, “Who is able to stand before Yahweh, this holy God? To whom shall he go up from us?” 21They sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath Jearim, saying, “The Philistines have brought back Yahweh’s ark. Come down, and bring it up to yourselves.”
1Als nu de ark des HEEREN zeven maanden in het land der Filistijnen geweest was, 2Zo riepen de Filistijnen de priesters en de waarzeggers, zeggende: Wat zullen wij met de ark des HEEREN doen? Laat ons weten, waarmede wij ze aan haar plaats zenden zullen. 3Zij dan zeiden: Indien gij de ark des Gods van Israel wegzendt, zendt haar niet ledig weg, maar vergeldt Hem ganselijk een schuldoffer; dan zult gij genezen worden, en ulieden zal bekend worden, waarom Zijn hand van u niet afwijkt. 4Toen zeiden zij: Welk is dat schuldoffer, dat wij Hem vergelden zullen? En zij zeiden: Vijf gouden spenen, en vijf gouden muizen, naar het getal van de vorsten der Filistijnen; want het is enerlei plaag over u allen, en over uw vorsten. 5Zo maakt dan beelden uwer spenen, en beelden uwer muizen, die het land verderven, en geeft den God van Israel de eer; misschien zal Hij Zijn hand verlichten van over ulieden, en van over uw god, en van over uw land. 6Waarom toch zoudt gijlieden uw hart verzwaren, gelijk de Egyptenaars en Farao hun hart verzwaard hebben? Hebben zij niet, toen Hij wonderlijk met hen gehandeld had, hen laten trekken, dat zij heengingen? 7Nu dan, neemt en maakt een nieuwen wagen, en twee zogende koeien, op dewelke geen juk gekomen is; spant de koeien aan den wagen, en brengt haar kalveren van achter haar weder naar huis. 8Neemt dan de ark des HEEREN, en zet ze op den wagen, en legt de gouden kleinoden, die gij Hem ten schuloffer vergelden zult, in een koffertje aan haar zijde; en zendt ze weg, dat zij heenga. 9Ziet dan toe, indien zij den weg van haar landpale opgaat naar Beth-Semes, zo heeft Hij ons dit groot kwaad gedaan; maar zo niet, zo zullen wij weten, dat Zijn hand ons niet geraakt heeft; het is ons een toeval geweest. 10En die lieden deden alzo, en namen twee zogende koeien, en spanden ze aan den wagen, en haar kalveren sloten zij in huis. 11En zij zetten de ark des HEEREN op den wagen, en het koffertje met de gouden muizen, en de beelden hunner spenen. 12De koeien nu gingen recht in dien weg, op den weg naar Beth-Semes op een straat; zij gingen steeds voort, al loeiende, en weken noch ter rechter hand noch ter linkerhand; en de vorsten der Filistijnen gingen achter dezelve tot aan de landpale van Beth-Semes. 13En die van Beth-Semes maaiden den tarweoogst in het dal, en als zij hun ogen ophieven, zagen zij de ark en verblijdden zich, als zij die zagen. 14En de wagen kwam op den akker van Jozua, den Beth-semiet, en bleef daar staande; en daar was een grote steen, en zij kloofden het hout van den wagen, en offerden de koeien den HEERE ten brandoffer. 15En de Levieten namen de ark des HEEREN af en het koffertje, dat daarbij was, waarin de gouden kleinoden waren, en zetten ze op dien groten steen; en die lieden van Beth-Semes offerden brandofferen, en slachtten slachtofferen den HEERE, op denzelven dag. 16En als de vijf vorsten der Filistijnen zulks gezien hadden, zo keerden zij weder op denzelven dag naar Ekron. 17Dit nu zijn de gouden spenen, die de Filistijnen aan den HEERE ten schuldoffer vergolden hebben: Voor Asdod een voor Gaza een, voor Askelot een, voor Gath een, voor Ekron een. 18Ook gouden muizen, naar het getal van alle steden der Filistijnen, onder de vijf vorsten, van de vaste steden af tot aan de landvlekken; en tot aan Abel, den groten steen, op denwelken zij de ark des HEEREN nedergesteld hadden, die tot op dezen dag is op den akker van Jozua, den Beth-semiet. 19En de Heere sloeg onder die lieden van Beth-Semes, omdat zij in de ark des HEEREN gezien hadden; ja, Hij sloeg van het volk zeventig mannen, en vijftig duizend mannen. Toen bedreef het volk rouw, omdat de HEERE een groten slag onder het volk geslagen had. 20Toen zeiden de lieden van Beth-Semes: Wie zou kunnen bestaan voor het aangezicht van de HEERE, dezen heiligen God? En tot wien van ons zal Hij optrekken? 21Zo zonden zij boden tot de inwoners van Kirjath-Jearim, zeggende: De Filistijnen hebben de ark des HEEREN wedergebracht; komt af, haalt ze opwaarts tot u.
