1E aconteceu que havendo Samuel envelhecido, pôs seus filhos por juízes sobre Israel. 2E o nome de seu filho primogênito foi Joel, e o nome do segundo, Abias: foram juízes em Berseba. 3Mas não andaram os filhos pelos caminhos de seu pai, antes se inclinaram atrás a ganância, recebendo suborno e pervertendo o direito. 4Então todos os anciãos de Israel se juntaram, e vieram a Samuel em Ramá, 5E disseram-lhe: Eis que tu envelheceste, e teus filhos não vão por teus caminhos: portanto, constitui-nos agora um rei que nos julgue, como todas as nações. 6E descontentou a Samuel esta palavra que disseram: Dá-nos rei que nos julgue. E Samuel orou ao SENHOR. 7E disse o SENHOR a Samuel: Ouve a voz do povo em tudo o que te disserem: porque não rejeitaram a ti, mas sim a mim me rejeitaram, para que eu não reine sobre eles. 8Conforme todas as obras que fizeram desde o dia que os tirei do Egito até hoje, que me deixaram e serviram a deuses alheios, assim fazem também contigo. 9Agora, pois, ouve sua voz: mas protesta contra eles declarando-lhes o direito do rei que há de reinar sobre eles. 10E disse Samuel todas as palavras do SENHOR ao povo que lhe havia pedido rei. 11Disse, pois: Este será o direito do rei que houver de reinar sobre vós: tomará vossos filhos, e os porá em seus carros, e em seus cavaleiros, para que corram diante de seu carro: 12E se escolherá capitães de mil, e capitães de cinquenta: os porá também a que arem seus campos, e ceifem suas plantações, e a que façam suas armas de guerra, e os equipamentos de seus carros: 13Tomará também vossas filhas para que sejam perfumistas, cozinheiras, e padeiras. 14Também tomará vossas terras, vossas vinhas, e vossos bons olivais, e os dará a seus servos. 15Ele tomará o dízimo de vossas sementes e vossas vinhas, para dar a seus eunucos e a seus servos. 16Ele tomará vossos servos, e vossas servas, e vossos bons rapazes, e vossos asnos, e com eles fará suas obras. 17Tomará o dízimo também do vosso rebanho, e sereis seus servos. 18E clamareis aquele dia por causa de vosso rei que vos havereis escolhido, mas o SENHOR não vos ouvirá naquele dia. 19Porém o povo não quis ouvir a voz de Samuel; antes disseram: Não, mas sim que haverá rei sobre nós: 20E nós seremos também como todas as nações, e nosso rei nos governará, e sairá diante de nós, e fará nossas guerras. 21E ouviu Samuel todas as palavras do povo, e referiu-as aos ouvidos do SENHOR. 22E o SENHOR disse a Samuel: Ouve sua voz, e põe rei sobre eles. Então disse Samuel aos homens de Israel: Ide-vos cada um à sua cidade.
1When Samuel was old, he made his sons judges over Israel. 2Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abijah: they were judges in Beersheba. 3His sons didn’t walk in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted justice. 4Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel to Ramah; 5and they said to him, “Behold, you are old, and your sons don’t walk in your ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.” 6But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” Samuel prayed to Yahweh. 7Yahweh said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they tell you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me, that I should not be king over them. 8According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, in that they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also to you. 9Now therefore listen to their voice: however you shall protest solemnly to them, and shall show them the way of the king who shall reign over them.” 10Samuel told all Yahweh’s words to the people who asked of him a king. 11He said, “This will be the way of the king who shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them to him, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they shall run before his chariots; 12and he will appoint them to him for captains of thousands, and captains of fifties; and he will assign some to plow his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and the instruments of his chariots. 13He will take your daughters to be perfumers, and to be cooks, and to be bakers. 14He will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your olive groves, even their best, and give them to his servants. 15He will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants. 16He will take your male servants, and your female servants, and your best young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work. 17He will take the tenth of your flocks: and you shall be his servants. 18You shall cry out in that day because of your king whom you shall have chosen you; and Yahweh will not answer you in that day.” 19But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No; but we will have a king over us, 20that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.” 21Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of Yahweh. 22Yahweh said to Samuel, “Listen to their voice, and make them a king.” Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Every man go to his city.”

En Samuel bad den HEERE aan. 7Doch de HEERE zeide tot Samuel: Hoor naar de stem des volks in alles, wat zij tot u zeggen zullen; want zij hebben u niet verworpen, maar zij hebben Mij verworpen, dat Ik geen Koning over hen zal zijn. 8Naar de werken, die zij gedaan hebben, van dien dag af, toen Ik hen uit Egypte geleid heb, tot op dezen dag toe, en hebben Mij verlaten en andere goden gediend; alzo doen zij u ook. 9Hoor dan nu naar hun stem; doch als gij hen op het hoogste zult betuigd hebben, zo zult gij hen te kennen geven de wijze des konings, die over hen regeren zal. 10Samuel nu zeide al de woorden des HEEREN het volk aan, hetwelk een koning van hem begeerde. 11En zeide: Dit zal des konings wijze zijn, die over u regeren zal: hij zal uw zonen nemen, dat hij hen zich stelle tot zijn wagen, en tot zijn ruiteren, dat zij voor zijn wagen henen lopen; 12En dat hij hen zich stelle tot oversten der duizenden, en tot oversten der vijftigen; en dat zij zijn akker ploegen, en dat zij zijn oogst oogsten, en dat zij zijn krijgswapenen maken, mitsgaders zijn wapentuig. 13En uw dochteren zal hij nemen tot apothekeressen, en tot keukenmaagden, en tot baksters. 14En uw akkers, en uw wijngaarden, en uw olijfgaarden, die de beste zijn, zal hij nemen, en zal ze aan zijn knechten geven. 15En uw zaad, en uw wijngaarden zal hij vertienen, en hij zal ze aan zijn hovelingen, en aan zijn knechten geven. 16En hij zal uw knechten, en uw dienstmaagden, en uw beste jongelingen, en uw ezelen nemen, en hij zal zijn werk daarmede doen. 17Hij zal uw kudden vertienen; en gij zult hem tot knechten zijn. 18Gij zult wel te dien dage roepen, vanwege uw koning, dien gij u zult verkoren hebben, maar de HEERE zal u te dien dage niet verhoren. 19Doch het volk weigerde Samuels stem te horen; en zij zeiden: Neen, maar er zal een koning over ons zijn. 20En wij zullen ook zijn gelijk al de volken; en onze koning zal ons richten, en hij zal voor onze aangezichten uitgaan, en hij zal onze krijgen voeren. 21Als Samuel al de woorden des volks gehoord had, zo sprak hij dezelve voor de oren des HEEREN. 22De HEERE nu zeide tot Samuel: Hoor naar hun stem, en stel hun een koning. Toen zeide Samuel tot de mannen van Israel: Gaat heen, een iegelijk naar zijn stad.
