1Or la carestia era grave nel paese; 2e quand’ebbero finito di mangiare il grano che aveano portato dall’Egitto, il padre disse loro: "Tornate a comprarci un po’ di viveri". 3E Giuda gli rispose, dicendo: "Quell’uomo ce lo dichiarò positivamente: Non vedrete la mia faccia, se il vostro fratello non sarà con voi. 4Se tu mandi il nostro fratello con noi, noi scenderemo e ti compreremo dei viveri; 5ma, se non lo mandi, non scenderemo; perché quell’uomo ci ha detto: Non vedrete la mia faccia, se il vostro fratello non sarà con voi". 6E Israele disse: "Perché m’avete fatto questo torto di dire a quell’uomo che avevate ancora un fratello?" 7Quelli risposero: "Quell’uomo c’interrogò partitamente intorno a noi e al nostro parentado, dicendo: Vostro padre vive egli ancora? Avete qualche altro fratello? E noi gli rispondemmo a tenore delle sue domande. Potevam noi mai sapere che ci avrebbe detto: Fate venire il vostro fratello?" 8E Giuda disse a Israele suo padre: "Lascia venire il fanciullo con me, e ci leveremo e andremo; e noi vivremo e non morremo: né noi, né tu, né i nostri piccini. 9Io mi rendo garante di lui; ridomandane conto alla mia mano; se non te lo riconduco e non te io rimetto davanti, io sarò per sempre colpevole verso di te. 10Se non ci fossimo indugiati, a quest’ora saremmo già tornati due volte". 11Allora Israele, loro padre, disse loro: "Se così è fate questo: Prendete ne’ vostri sacchi delle cose più squisite di questo paese, e portate a quell’uomo un dono: un po’ di balsamo, un po’ di miele, degli aromi e della mirra, de’ pistacchi e delle mandorle; 12e pigliate con voi il doppio del danaro, e riportate il danaro che fu rimesso alla bocca de’ vostri sacchi; forse fu un errore; 13prendete anche il vostro fratello, e levatevi, tornate da quell’uomo; 14e l’Iddio onnipotente vi faccia trovar grazia dinanzi a quell’uomo, sì ch’egli vi rilasci l’altro vostro fratello e Beniamino. E se debbo esser privato de’ miei figliuoli, ch’io lo sia!" 15Quelli presero dunque il dono, presero seco il doppio del danaro, e Beniamino; e, levatisi, scesero in Egitto, e si presentarono dinanzi a Giuseppe. 16E come Giuseppe vide Beniamino con loro, disse al suo maestro di casa: "Conduci questi uomini in casa; macella, e prepara tutto; perché questi uomini mangeranno con me a mezzogiorno". 17E l’uomo fece come Giuseppe aveva ordinato, e li menò in casa di Giuseppe. 18E quelli ebbero paura, perché eran menati in casa di Giuseppe, e dissero: "Siamo menati qui a motivo di quel danaro che ci fu rimesso nei sacchi la prima volta; ei vuol darci addosso, precipitarsi su noi e prenderci come schiavi, coi nostri asini". 19E accostatisi al maestro di casa di Giuseppe, gli parlarono sulla porta della casa, e dissero: 20"Scusa, signor mio! noi scendemmo già una prima volta a comprar dei viveri; 21e avvenne che, quando fummo giunti al luogo dove pernottammo, aprimmo i sacchi, ed ecco il danaro di ciascun di noi era alla bocca del suo sacco: il nostro danaro del peso esatto; e noi l’abbiam riportato con noi. 22E abbiam portato con noi dell’altro danaro per comprar de’ viveri; noi non sappiamo chi avesse messo il nostro danaro nei nostri sacchi". 23Ed egli disse: "Datevi pace, non temete; l’Iddio vostro e l’Iddio del vostro padre ha messo un tesoro nei vostri sacchi. Io ebbi il vostro danaro". E, fatto uscire Simeone, lo condusse loro. 24Quell’uomo li fece entrare in casa di Giuseppe; dette loro dell’acqua, ed essi si lavarono i piedi; ed egli dette del foraggio ai loro asini. 25Ed essi prepararono il regalo, aspettando che Giuseppe venisse a mezzogiorno; perché aveano inteso che rimarrebbero quivi a mangiare. 26E quando Giuseppe venne a casa, quelli gli porsero il dono che aveano portato seco nella casa, e s’inchinarono fino a terra davanti a lui. 27Egli domandò loro come stessero, e disse: "Vostro padre, il vecchio di cui mi parlaste, sta egli bene? Vive egli ancora?" 28E quelli risposero: "Il padre nostro, tuo servo, sta bene; vive ancora". E s’inchinarono, e gli fecero riverenza. 29Poi Giuseppe alzò gli occhi, vide Beniamino suo fratello, figliuolo della madre sua, e disse: "E’ questo il vostro fratello più giovine di cui mi parlaste?" Poi disse a lui: "Iddio ti sia propizio, figliuol mio!" 30E Giuseppe s’affrettò ad uscire, perché le sue viscere s’eran commosse per il suo fratello; e cercava un luogo dove piangere; entrò nella sua camera, e quivi pianse. 31Poi si lavò la faccia, ed uscì; si fece forza, e disse: "Portate il pranzo". 32Fu dunque portato il cibo per lui a parte, e per loro a parte, e per gli Egiziani che mangiavan con loro, a parte; perché gli Egiziani non possono mangiare con gli Ebrei; per gli Egiziani è cosa abominevole. 33Ed essi si misero a sedere dinanzi a lui: il primogenito, secondo il suo diritto di primogenitura, e il più giovine secondo la sua età; e si guardavano l’un l’altro con maraviglia. 34E Giuseppe fe’ loro portare delle vivande che aveva dinanzi; ma la porzione di Beniamino era cinque volte maggiore di quella d’ogni altro di loro. E bevvero, e stettero allegri con lui.
1The famine was severe in the land. 2When they had eaten up the grain which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said to them, “Go again, buy us a little more food.” 3Judah spoke to him, saying, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’ 4If you’ll send our brother with us, we’ll go down and buy you food, 5but if you’ll not send him, we’ll not go down, for the man said to us, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’” 6Israel said, “Why did you treat me so badly, telling the man that you had another brother?” 7They said, “The man asked directly concerning ourselves, and concerning our relatives, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?’ We just answered his questions. Is there any way we could know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down?’” 8Judah said to Israel, his father, “Send the boy with me, and we’ll get up and go, so that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and also our little ones. 9I’ll be collateral for him. From my hand will you require him. If I don’t bring him to you, and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever, 10for if we hadn’t delayed, surely we would have returned a second time by now.” 11Their father, Israel, said to them, “If it must be so, then do this. Take from the choice fruits of the land in your bags, and carry down a present for the man, a little balm, a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts, and almonds; 12and take double money in your hand, and take back the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks. Perhaps it was an oversight. 13Take your brother also, get up, and return to the man. 14May God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release to you your other brother and Benjamin. If I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.” 15The men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and got up, went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph. 16When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and butcher an animal, and prepare; for the men will dine with me at noon.” 17The man did as Joseph commanded, and the man brought the men to Joseph’s house. 18The men were afraid, because they were brought to Joseph’s house; and they said, “Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time, we’re brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, attack us, and seize us as slaves, along with our donkeys.” 19They came near to the steward of Joseph’s house, and they spoke to him at the door of the house, 20and said, “Oh, my lord, we indeed came down the first time to buy food. 21When we came to the lodging place, we opened our sacks, and behold, each man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. We have brought it back in our hand. 22We have brought down other money in our hand to buy food. We don’t know who put our money in our sacks.” 23He said, “Peace be to you. Don’t be afraid. Your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks. I received your money.” He brought Simeon out to them. 24The man brought the men into Joseph’s house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet. He gave their donkeys fodder. 25They prepared the present for Joseph’s coming at noon, for they heard that they should eat bread there. 26When Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves down to him to the earth. 27He asked them of their welfare, and said, “Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he yet alive?” 28They said, “Your servant, our father, is well. He is still alive.” They bowed down humbly. 29He lifted up his eyes, and saw Benjamin, his brother, his mother’s son, and said, “Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me?” He said, “God be gracious to you, my son.” 30Joseph hurried, for his heart yearned over his brother; and he sought a place to weep. He entered into his room, and wept there. 31He washed his face, and came out. He controlled himself, and said, “Serve the meal.” 32They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians, that ate with him, by themselves, because the Egyptians don’t eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians. 33They sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth, and the men marveled one with another. 34He sent portions to them from before him, but Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. They drank, and were merry with him.

Zo gaven wij het hem te kennen, volgens diezelfde woorden; hebben wij juist geweten, dat hij zeggen zou: Brengt uw broeder af? 8Toen zeide Juda tot Israel, zijn vader: Zend den jongeling met mij, zo zullen wij ons opmaken en reizen, opdat wij leven en niet sterven, noch wij, noch gij, noch onze kinderkens. 9Ik zal borg voor hem zijn; van mijn hand zult gij hem eisen; indien ik hem tot u niet breng en hem voor uw aangezicht stel, zo zal ik alle dagen tegen u gezondigd hebben! 10Want hadden wij niet gezuimd, voorwaar, wij waren alreeds tweemaal wedergekomen. 11Toen zeide Israel, hun vader, tot hen: Is het nu alzo, zo doet dit; neemt van het loffelijkste dezes lands in uwe vaten, en brengt dien man een geschenk henen af: een weinig balsem, en een weinig honig, specerijen en mirre, terpentijnnoten en amandelen. 12En neemt dubbel geld in uw hand; en brengt het geld, hetwelk in den mond uwer zakken wedergekeerd is, weder in uw hand; misschien is het een feil. 13Neemt ook uw broeder mede, en maakt u op, keert weder tot dien man. 14En God, de Almachtige, geve u barmhartigheid voor het aangezicht van dien man, dat hij uw anderen broeder en Benjamin met u late gaan! En mij aangaande, als ik van kinderen beroofd ben, zo ben ik beroofd! 15En die mannen namen dat geschenk, en namen dubbel geld in hun hand, en Benjamin; en zij maakten zich op, en togen af naar Egypte, en zij stonden voor Jozefs aangezicht. 16Als Jozef Benjamin met hen zag, zo zeide hij tot dengene, die over zijn huis was: Breng deze mannen naar het huis toe, en slacht slachtvee, en maak het gereed; want deze mannen zullen te middag met mij eten. 17De man nu deed, gelijk Jozef gezegd had; en de man bracht deze mannen in het huis van Jozef. 18Toen vreesden deze mannen, omdat zij in het huis van Jozef gebracht werden, en zeiden: Ter oorzake van het geld, dat in het begin in onze zakken wedergekeerd is, worden wij ingebracht, opdat hij ons overrompele en ons overvalle, en ons tot slaven neme, met onze ezelen. 19Daarom naderden zij tot dien man, die over het huis van Jozef was, en zij spraken tot hem aan de deur van het huis. 20En zij zeiden: Och, mijn heer! wij waren in het begin gewisselijk afgekomen, om spijze te kopen. 21Het is nu geschied, als wij in de herberg gekomen waren, en wij onze zakken opendeden, zie, zo was ieders mans geld in den mond van zijn zak, ons geld in zijn gewicht; en wij hebben hetzelve wedergebracht in onze hand. 22Wij hebben ook ander geld in onze hand afgebracht, om spijze te kopen; wij weten niet, wie ons geld in onze zakken gelegd heeft. 23En hij zeide: Vrede zij ulieden, vreest niet! Uw God en de God uws vaders heeft u een schat in uw zakken gegeven; uw geld is tot mij gekomen. God zij u genadig! 30En Jozef haastte zich; want zijn ingewand ontstak jegens zijn broeder, en hij zocht te wenen; en hij ging in een kamer, en weende aldaar. 31Daarna wies hij zijn aangezicht en kwam uit; en hij bedwong zichzelven, en zeide: Zet brood op. 32En zij richtten voor hem aan in het bijzonder, en voor hen in het bijzonder; en voor de Egyptenaren, die met hem aten, in het bijzonder; want de Egyptenaars mogen geen brood eten met de Hebreen, dewijl zulks den Egyptenaren een gruwel is. 33En zij aten voor zijn aangezicht, de eerstgeborene naar zijn eerstgeboorte, en de jongere naar zijn jonkheid; dies verwonderden zich de mannen onder elkander. 34En hij langde hun van de gerechten, die voor hem waren; maar Benjamins gerecht was vijfmaal groter, dan de gerechten van hen allen. En zij dronken, en zij werden dronken met hem.
