1Diletti, questa è già la seconda epistola che vi scrivo; e in ambedue io tengo desta la vostra mente sincera facendo appello alla vostra memoria, 2onde vi ricordiate delle parole dette già dai santi profeti, e del comandamento del Signore e Salvatore, trasmessovi dai vostri apostoli; 3sapendo questo, prima di tutto: che negli ultimi giorni verranno degli schernitori coi loro scherni i quali si condurranno secondo le loro concupiscenze 4e diranno: Dov’è la promessa della sua venuta? perché dal giorno in cui i padri si sono addormentati, tutte le cose continuano nel medesimo stato come dal principio della creazione. 5Poiché costoro dimenticano questo volontariamente: che ab antico, per effetto della parola di Dio, esistettero de’ cieli e una terra tratta dall’acqua e sussistente in mezzo all’acqua; 6per i quali mezzi il mondo d’allora, sommerso dall’acqua, perì; 7mentre i cieli d’adesso e la terra, per la medesima Parola son custoditi, essendo riservati al fuoco per il giorno del giudizio e della distruzione degli uomini empi. 8Ma voi, diletti, non dimenticate quest’unica cosa, che per il Signore, un giorno è come mille anni, e mille anni son come un giorno. 9Il Signore non ritarda l’adempimento della sua promessa, come alcuni reputano che faccia; ma egli è paziente verso voi, non volendo che alcuni periscano, ma che tutti giungano a ravvedersi. 10Ma il giorno del Signore verrà come un ladro; in esso i cieli passeranno stridendo, e gli elementi infiammati si dissolveranno, e la terra e le opere che sono in essa saranno arse. 11Poiché dunque tutte queste cose hanno da dissolversi, quali non dovete voi essere, per santità di condotta e per pietà, 12aspettando ed affrettando la venuta del giorno di Dio, a cagion del quale i cieli infocati si dissolveranno e gli elementi infiammati si distruggeranno? 13Ma, secondo la sua promessa, noi aspettiamo nuovi cieli e nuova terra, ne’ quali abiti la giustizia. 14Perciò, diletti, aspettando queste cose, studiatevi d’esser trovati, agli occhi suoi, immacolati e irreprensibili nella pace; 15e ritenete che la pazienza del Signor nostro è per la vostra salvezza, come anche il nostro caro fratello Paolo ve l’ha scritto, secondo la sapienza che gli è stata data; 16e questo egli fa in tutte le sue epistole, parlando in esse di questi argomenti; nelle quali epistole sono alcune cose difficili a capire, che gli uomini ignoranti e instabili torcono, come anche le altre Scritture, a loro propria perdizione. 17Voi dunque, diletti, sapendo queste cose innanzi, state in guardia, che talora, trascinati anche voi dall’errore degli scellerati, non iscadiate dalla vostra fermezza; 18ma crescete nella grazia e nella conoscenza del nostro Signore e Salvatore Gesù Cristo. A lui sia la gloria, ora e in sempiterno. Amen.
1This is now, beloved, the second letter that I have written to you; and in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by reminding you; 2that you should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandments of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior: 3knowing this first, that in the last days mockers will come, walking after their own lusts, 4and saying, “Where is the promise of his coming? For, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” 5For this they willfully forget, that there were heavens from of old, and an earth formed out of water and amid water, by the word of God; 6by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished. 7But the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. 8But don’t forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 10But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11Therefore since all these things will be destroyed like this, what kind of people ought you to be in holy living and godliness, 12looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, which will cause the burning heavens to be dissolved, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. 14Therefore, beloved, seeing that you look for these things, be diligent to be found in peace, without defect and blameless in his sight. 15Regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote to you; 16as also in all of his letters, speaking in them of these things. In those, there are some things that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unsettled twist, as they also do to the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. 17You therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware, lest being carried away with the error of the wicked, you fall from your own steadfastness. 18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.
1Dezen tweeden zendbrief, geliefden, schrijf ik nu aan u, in welke beide ik door vermaning uw oprecht gemoed opwekke; 2Opdat gij gedachtig zijt aan de woorden, die van de heilige profeten te voren gesproken zijn, en aan ons gebod, die des Heeren en Zaligmakers apostelen zijn; 3Dit eerst wetende, dat in het laatste der dagen spotters komen zullen, die naar hun eigen begeerlijkheden zullen wandelen, 4En zeggen: Waar is de belofte Zijner toekomst? Want van dien dag, dat de vaders ontslapen zijn, blijven alle dingen alzo gelijk van het begin der schepping. 5Want willens is dit hun onbekend, dat door het woord Gods de hemelen van over lang geweest zijn, en de aarde uit het water en in het water bestaande; 6Door welke de wereld, die toen was, met het water van den zondvloed bedekt zijnde, vergaan is. 7Maar de hemelen, die nu zijn, en de aarde, zijn door hetzelfde woord als een schat weggelegd, en worden ten vure bewaard tegen den dag des oordeels, en der verderving der goddeloze mensen. 8Doch deze ene zaak zij u niet onbekend, geliefden, dat een dag bij den Heere is als duizend jaren, en duizend jaren als een dag. 9De Heere vertraagt de belofte niet (gelijk enigen dat traagheid achten), maar is lankmoedig over ons, niet willende, dat enigen verloren gaan, maar dat zij allen tot bekering komen. 10Maar de dag des Heeren zal komen als een dief in den nacht, in welken de hemelen met een gedruis zullen voorbijgaan, en de elementen branden zullen en vergaan, en de aarde en de werken, die daarin zijn, zullen verbranden. 11Dewijl dan deze dingen alle vergaan, hoedanigen behoort gij te zijn in heiligen wandel en godzaligheid! 12Verwachtende en haastende tot de toekomst van den dag Gods, in welken de hemelen, door vuur ontstoken zijnde, zullen vergaan, en de elementen brandende zullen versmelten. 13Maar wij verwachten, naar Zijn belofte, nieuwe hemelen en een nieuwe aarde, in dewelke gerechtigheid woont. 14Daarom, geliefden, verwachtende deze dingen, benaarstigt u, dat gij onbevlekt en onbestraffelijk van Hem bevonden moogt worden in vrede; 15En acht de lankmoedigheid onzes Heeren voor zaligheid; gelijkerwijs ook onze geliefde broeder Paulus, naar de wijsheid, die hem gegeven is, ulieden geschreven heeft; 16Gelijk ook in alle zendbrieven, daarin van deze dingen sprekende; in welke sommige dingen zwaar zijn om te verstaan, die de ongeleerde en onvaste mensen verdraaien, gelijk ook de andere Schriften, tot hun eigen verderf. 17Gij dan, geliefden, zulks te voren wetende, wacht u, dat gij niet door de verleiding der gruwelijke mensen mede afgerukt wordt, en uitvalt van uw vastigheid; 18Maar wast op in de genade en kennis van onzen Heere en Zaligmaker Jezus Christus. Hem zij de heerlijkheid, beide nu en in de dag der eeuwigheid. Amen.
