1Simon Pietro, servitore e apostolo di Gesù Cristo, a quelli che hanno ottenuto una fede preziosa quanto la nostra nella giustizia del nostro Dio e Salvatore Gesù Cristo: 2grazia e pace vi siano moltiplicate nella conoscenza di Dio e di Gesù nostro Signore. 3Poiché la sua potenza divina ci ha donate tutte le cose che appartengono alla vita e alla pietà mediante la conoscenza di Colui che ci ha chiamati mercé la propria gloria e virtù, 4per le quali Egli ci ha largito le sue preziose e grandissime promesse onde per loro mezzo voi foste fatti partecipi della natura divina dopo esser fuggiti dalla corruzione che è nel mondo per via della concupiscenza, 5voi, per questa stessa ragione, mettendo in ciò dal canto vostro ogni premura, aggiungete alla fede vostra la virtù; alla virtù la conoscenza; 6alla conoscenza la continenza; alla continenza la pazienza; alla pazienza la pietà; alla pietà l’amor fraterno; 7e all’amor fraterno la carità. 8Perché se queste cose si trovano e abbondano in voi, non vi renderanno né oziosi né sterili nella conoscenza del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo. 9Poiché colui nel quale queste cose non si trovano, è cieco, ha la vista corta avendo dimenticato il purgamento dei suoi vecchi peccati. 10Perciò, fratelli, vie più studiatevi di render sicura la vostra vocazione ad elezione; perché, facendo queste cose, non inciamperete giammai, 11poiché così vi sarà largamente provveduta l’entrata nel regno eterno del nostro Signore e Salvatore Gesù Cristo. 12Perciò avrò cura di ricordarvi del continuo queste cose, benché le conosciate, e siate stabiliti nella verità che vi è stata recata. 13E stimo cosa giusta finché io sono in questa tenda, di risvegliarvi ricordandovele, 14perché so che presto dovrò lasciare questa mia tenda, come il Signor nostro Gesù Cristo me lo ha dichiarato. 15Ma mi studierò di far sì che dopo la mia dipartenza abbiate sempre modo di ricordarvi di queste cose. 16Poiché non è coll’andar dietro a favole artificiosamente composte che vi abbiamo fatto conoscere la potenza e la venuta del nostro Signor Gesù Cristo, ma perché siamo stati testimoni oculari della sua maestà. 17Poiché egli ricevette da Dio Padre onore e gloria quando giunse a lui quella voce dalla magnifica gloria: Questo è il mio diletto Figliuolo, nel quale mi sono compiaciuto. 18E noi stessi udimmo quella voce che veniva dal cielo, quand’eravamo con lui sul monte santo. 19Abbiamo pure la parola profetica, più ferma, alla quale fate bene di prestare attenzione, come una lampada splendente in luogo oscuro, finché spunti il giorno e la stella mattutina sorga ne’ vostri cuori; 20sapendo prima di tutto questo: che nessuna profezia della Scrittura procede da vedute particolari; 21poiché non è dalla volontà dell’uomo che venne mai alcuna profezia, ma degli uomini hanno parlato da parte di Dio, perché sospinti dallo Spirito Santo.
1Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a like precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ: 2Grace to you and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3seeing that his divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and virtue; 4by which he has granted to us his precious and exceedingly great promises; that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world by lust. 5Yes, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence; and in moral excellence, knowledge; 6and in knowledge, self-control; and in self-control patience; and in patience godliness; 7and in godliness brotherly affection; and in brotherly affection, love. 8For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle nor unfruitful to the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9For he who lacks these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins. 10Therefore, brothers, be more diligent to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never stumble. 11For thus you will be richly supplied with the entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. 12Therefore I will not be negligent to remind you of these things, though you know them, and are established in the present truth. 13I think it right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you; 14knowing that the putting off of my tent comes swiftly, even as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. 15Yes, I will make every effort that you may always be able to remember these things even after my departure. 16For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17For he received from God the Father honor and glory, when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” 18We heard this voice come out of heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain. 19We have the more sure word of prophecy; and you do well that you heed it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns, and the morning star arises in your hearts: 20knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of private interpretation. 21For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke, being moved by the Holy Spirit.
1Simeon Petrus, een dienstknecht en apostel van Jezus Christus, aan degenen, die even dierbaar geloof met ons verkregen hebben, door de rechtvaardigheid van onzen God en Zaligmaker, Jezus Christus; 2Genade en vrede zij u vermenigvuldigd door de kennis van God, en van Jezus, onzen Heere; 3Gelijk ons Zijn Goddelijke kracht alles, wat tot het leven en de godzaligheid behoort, geschonken heeft, door de kennis Desgenen, Die ons geroepen heeft tot heerlijkheid en deugd; 4Door welke ons de grootste en dierbare beloften geschonken zijn, opdat gij door dezelve der goddelijke natuur deelachtig zoudt worden, nadat gij ontvloden zijt het verderf, dat in de wereld is door de begeerlijkheid. 5En gij, tot hetzelve ook alle naarstigheid toebrengende, voegt bij uw geloof deugd, en bij de deugd kennis, 6En bij de kennis matigheid, en bij de matigheid lijdzaamheid, en bij de lijdzaamheid godzaligheid, 7En bij de godzaligheid broederlijke liefde, en bij de broederlijke liefde, liefde jegens allen. 8Want zo deze dingen bij u zijn, en in u overvloedig zijn, zij zullen u niet ledig noch onvruchtbaar laten in de kennis van onzen Heere Jezus Christus. 9Want bij welken deze dingen niet zijn, die is blind, van verre niet ziende, hebbende vergeten de reiniging zijner vorige zonden. 10Daarom, broeders, benaarstigt u te meer, om uw roeping en verkiezing vast te maken; want dat doende zult gij nimmermeer struikelen. 11Want alzo zal u rijkelijk toegevoegd worden de ingang in het eeuwig Koninkrijk van onzen Heere en Zaligmaker, Jezus Christus. 12Daarom zal ik niet verzuimen u altijd daarvan te vermanen, hoewel gij het weet, en in de tegenwoordige waarheid versterkt zijt. 13En ik acht het recht te zijn, zolang ik in deze tabernakel ben, dat ik u opwekke door vermaning; 14Alzo ik weet, dat de aflegging mijns tabernakels haast zijn zal, gelijkerwijs ook onze Heere Jezus Christus mij heeft geopenbaard. 15Doch ik zal ook naarstigheid doen bij alle gelegenheid, dat gij na mijn uitgang van deze dingen gedachtenis moogt hebben. 16Want wij zijn geen kunstelijk verdichte fabelen nagevolgd, als wij u bekend gemaakt hebben de kracht en toekomst van onze Heere Jezus Christus, maar wij zijn aanschouwers geweest van Zijn majesteit. 17Want Hij heeft van God den Vader eer en heerlijkheid ontvangen, als zodanig een stem van de hoogwaardige heerlijkheid tot Hem gebracht werd: Deze is Mijn geliefde Zoon, in Denwelken Ik Mijn welbehagen heb. 18En deze stem hebben wij gehoord, als zij van de hemel gebracht is geweest, toen wij met Hem op de heilige berg waren. 19En wij hebben het profetische woord, dat zeer vast is, en gij doet wel, dat gij daarop acht hebt, als op een licht, schijnende in een duistere plaats, totdat de dag aanlichte, en de morgenster opga in uw harten. 20Dit eerst wetende, dat geen profetie der Schrift is van eigen uitlegging; 21Want de profetie is voortijds niet voortgebracht door de wil eens mensen, maar de heilige mensen Gods van den Heilige Geest gedreven zijnde, hebben ze gesproken.
