1Or Salomone s’imparentò con Faraone, re di Egitto. Sposò la figliuola di Faraone, e la menò nella città di Davide, finché avesse finito di edificare la sua casa, la casa dell’Eterno e le mura di cinta di Gerusalemme. 2Intanto il popolo non offriva sacrifizi che sugli alti luoghi, perché fino a que’ giorni non era stata edificata casa al nome dell’Eterno. 3E Salomone amava l’Eterno e seguiva i precetti di Davide suo padre; soltanto offriva sacrifizi e profumi sugli alti luoghi. 4Il re si recò a Gabaon per offrirvi sacrifizi, perché quello era il principale fra gli alti luoghi; e su quell’altare Salomone offerse mille olocausti. 5A Gabaon, l’Eterno apparve di notte, in sogno, a Salomone. E Dio gli disse: "Chiedi quello che vuoi ch’io ti dia". 6Salomone rispose: "Tu hai trattato con gran benevolenza il tuo servo Davide, mio padre, perch’egli camminava dinanzi a te con fedeltà, con giustizia, con rettitudine di cuore a tuo riguardo; tu gli hai conservata questa gran benevolenza, e gli hai dato un figliuolo che siede sul trono di lui, come oggi avviene. 7Ora, o Eterno, o mio Dio, tu hai fatto regnar me, tuo servo, in luogo di Davide mio padre, e io non sono che un giovanetto, e non so come condurmi; 8e il tuo servo è in mezzo al popolo che tu hai scelto, popolo numeroso, che non può esser contato né calcolato, tanto è grande. 9Da’ dunque al tuo servo un cuore intelligente ond’egli possa amministrar la giustizia per il tuo popolo e discernere il bene dal male; poiché chi mai potrebbe amministrar la giustizia per questo tuo popolo che è così numeroso?" 10Piacque al Signore che Salomone gli avesse fatta una tale richiesta. 11E Dio gli disse: "Giacché tu hai domandato questo, e non hai chiesto per te lunga vita, né ricchezze, né la morte de’ tuoi nemici, ma hai chiesto intelligenza per poter discernere ciò ch’è giusto, 12ecco, io faccio secondo la tua parola; e ti do un cuor savio e intelligente, in guisa che nessuno è stato simile a te per lo innanzi, e nessuno sorgerà simile a te in appresso. 13E oltre a questo io ti do quello che non hai domandato: ricchezze e gloria; talmente, che non vi sarà durante tutta la tua vita alcuno fra i re che possa esserti paragonato. 14E se cammini nelle mie vie osservando le mie leggi e i miei comandamenti, come fece Davide tuo padre, io prolungherò i tuoi giorni". 15Salomone si svegliò, ed ecco era un sogno; tornò a Gerusalemme, si presentò davanti all’arca del patto del Signore, e offerse olocausti, sacrifizi di azioni di grazie e fece un convito a tutti i suoi servi. 16Allora due meretrici vennero a presentarsi davanti al re. 17Una delle due disse: "Permetti, Signor mio! Io e questa donna abitavamo nella medesima casa, e io partorii nella camera dov’ella pure stava. 18E il terzo giorno dopo che ebbi partorito io, questa donna partorì anch’ella; noi stavamo insieme, e non v’era da noi alcun estraneo; non c’eravamo che noi due in casa. 19Ora, la notte passata, il bimbo di questa donna morì, perch’ella gli s’era coricata addosso. 20Ed essa, alzatasi nel cuor della notte, prese il mio figliuolo d’accanto a me, mentre la tua serva dormiva, e lo pose a giacere sul suo seno, e sul mio seno pose il suo figliuolo morto. 21E quando m’alzai la mattina per far poppare il mio figlio, ecco ch’era morto; ma, mirandolo meglio a giorno chiaro, m’accorsi che non era il mio figlio ch’io avea partorito". 22L’altra donna disse: "No, il vivo è il figliuolo mio, e il morto è il tuo". Ma la prima replicò: "No, invece, il morto è il figliuolo tuo, e il vivo è il mio". Così altercavano in presenza del re. 23Allora il re disse: "Una dice: Questo ch’è vivo è il figliuolo mio, e quello ch’è morto è il tuo; e l’altra dice: No, invece, il morto e il figliuolo tuo, e il vivo e il mio". 24Il re soggiunse: "Portatemi una spada!" E portarono una spada davanti al re. 25E il re disse: "Dividete il bambino vivo in due parti, e datene la metà all’una, e la metà all’altra". 26Allora la donna di cui era il bambino vivo, sentendosi commuover le viscere per amore del suo figliuolo, disse al re: "Deh! Signor mio, date a lei il bambino vivo, e non l’uccidete, no!" Ma l’altra diceva: "Non sia né mio né tuo; si divida!" 27Allora il re, rispondendo, disse: "Date a quella il bambino vivo, e non l’uccidete; la madre del bimbo è lei!" 28E tutto Israele udì parlare del giudizio che il re avea pronunziato, e temettero il re perché vedevano che la sapienza di Dio era in lui per amministrare la giustizia.
1Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh’s daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and Yahweh’s house, and the wall of Jerusalem all around. 2Only the people sacrificed in the high places, because there was no house built for Yahweh’s name until those days. 3Solomon loved Yahweh, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places. 4The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. 5In Gibeon Yahweh appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask what I shall give you.” 6Solomon said, “You have shown to your servant David my father great loving kindness, according as he walked before you in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with you. You have kept for him this great loving kindness, that you have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. 7Now, Yahweh my God, you have made your servant king instead of David my father. I am but a little child. I don’t know how to go out or come in. 8Your servant is in the midst of your people which you have chosen, a great people, that can’t be numbered nor counted for multitude. 9Give your servant therefore an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this your great people?” 10The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. 11God said to him, “Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked for yourself long life, neither have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice; 12behold, I have done according to your word. Behold, I have given you a wise and an understanding heart; so that there has been no one like you before you, neither after you shall any arise like you. 13I have also given you that which you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that there shall not be any among the kings like you, all your days. 14If you will walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.” 15Solomon awoke; and behold, it was a dream. Then he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and offered up burnt offerings, offered peace offerings, and made a feast to all his servants. 16Then two women who were prostitutes came to the king, and stood before him. 17The one woman said, “Oh, my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house. I delivered a child with her in the house. 18The third day after I delivered, this woman delivered also. We were together. There was no stranger with us in the house, just us two in the house. 19This woman’s child died in the night, because she lay on it. 20She arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while your handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. 21When I rose in the morning to nurse my child, behold, it was dead; but when I had looked at it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, whom I bore.” 22The other woman said, “No; but the living is my son, and the dead is your son.” This said, “No; but the dead is your son, and the living is my son.” Thus they spoke before the king. 23Then the king said, “The one says, ‘This is my son who lives, and your son is the dead;’ and the other says, ‘No; but your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.’” 24The king said, “Get me a sword.” They brought a sword before the king. 25The king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.” 26Then the woman whose the living child was spoke to the king, for her heart yearned over her son, and she said, “Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and in no way kill it!” But the other said, “It shall be neither mine nor yours. Divide it.” 27Then the king answered, “Give her the living child, and in no way kill it. She is its mother.” 28All Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.
1En Salomo verzwagerde zich met Farao, den koning van Egypte; en nam de dochter van Farao, en bracht ze in de stad Davids totdat hij voleind zou hebben het bouwen van zijn huis en het huis des HEEREN, en den muur van Jeruzalem rondom. 2Alleenlijk offerde het volk op de hoogten, want geen huis was den Naam des HEEREN gebouwd, tot die dagen toe. 3En Salomo had den HEERE lief, wandelende in de inzettingen van zijn vader David; alleenlijk offerde hij en rookte op de hoogten. 4En de koning ging naar Gibeon, om aldaar te offeren, omdat die hoogte groot was; duizend brandofferen offerde Salomo op dat altaar. 5Te Gibeon verscheen de HEERE aan Salomo in een droom des nachts en God zeide: Begeer wat Ik u geven zal. 6En Salomo zeide: Gij hebt aan Uw knecht David, mijn vader, grote weldadigheid gedaan, gelijk als hij voor Uw aangezicht gewandeld heeft, in waarheid, en in gerechtigheid, en in oprechtheid des harten met U; en Gij hebt hem deze grote weldadigheid gehouden, dat Gij hem gegeven hebt een zoon, zittende op zijn troon, als te dezen dage. 7Nu dan, HEERE, mijn God! Gij hebt Uw knecht koning gemaakt in de plaats van mijn vader David; en ik ben een klein jongeling, ik weet niet uit te gaan noch in te gaan. 8En Uw knecht is in het midden van Uw volk, dat Gij verkoren hebt, een groot volk, hetwelk niet kan geteld noch gerekend worden, vanwege de menigte. 9Geef dan Uw knecht een verstandig hart, om Uw volk te richten, verstandelijk onderscheidende tussen goed en kwaad; want wie zou dit Uw zwaar volk kunnen richten? 10Die zaak nu was goed in de ogen des HEEREN, dat Salomo deze zaak begeerd had. 11En God zeide tot hem: Daarom dat gij deze zaak begeerd hebt, en niet begeerd hebt, voor u vele dagen, noch voor u begeerd hebt rijkdom, noch begeerd hebt de ziel uwer vijanden; maar hebt begeerd verstand voor u, om gerichtszaken te horen; 12Zie, Ik heb gedaan naar uw woorden; zie, Ik heb u een wijs en verstandig hart gegeven, dat uws gelijke voor u niet geweest is, en uws gelijke na u niet opstaan zal. 13Zelfs ook wat gij niet begeerd hebt, heb Ik u gegeven, beide rijkdom en eer; dat uws gelijke niemand onder de koningen al uw dagen zijn zal. 14En zo gij in Mijn wegen wandelen zult, onderhoudende Mijn inzettingen en Mijn geboden, gelijk als uw vader David gewandeld heeft, zo zal Ik ook uw dagen verlengen. 15En Salomo waakte op, en ziet, het was een droom. En hij kwam te Jeruzalem, en stond voor de ark des verbonds des HEEREN, en offerde brandofferen, en bereidde dankofferen, en maakte een maaltijd voor al zijn knechten. 16Toen kwamen er twee vrouwen, die hoeren waren, tot den koning; en zij stonden voor zijn aangezicht. 17En de ene vrouw zeide: Och, mijn heer. Ik en deze vrouw wonen in een huis; en ik heb bij haar in dat huis gebaard. 18Het is nu geschied op den derden dag na mijn baren dat deze vrouw ook gebaard heeft; en wij waren te zamen, geen vreemde was met ons in dat huis, behalve ons tweeen in het huis. 19En de zoon dezer vrouw is des nachts gestorven, omdat zij op hem gelegen had. 20En zij stond ter middernacht op, en nam mijn zoon van bij mij, als uw dienstmaagd sliep, en legde hem in haar schoot, en haar doden zoon legde zij in mijn schoot. 21En ik stond in de morgen op, om mijn zoon te zogen, en zie, hij was dood; maar ik lette in den morgen op hem, en zie, het was mijn zoon niet, dien ik gebaard had. 22Toen zeide de andere vrouw: Neen, maar die levende is mijn zoon, en de dode is uw zoon; gene daarentegen zeide: Neen, maar de dode is uw zoon, en de levende is mijn zoon! Alzo spraken zij voor het aangezicht des konings. 23Toen zeide de koning: Deze zegt: Dit is mijn zoon, die leeft, maar uw zoon is het, die dood is; en die zegt: Neen, maar de dode is uw zoon, en de levende mijn zoon. 24Verder zeide de koning: Haalt mij een zwaard; en zij brachten een zwaard voor het aangezicht des konings. 25En de koning zeide: Doorsnijdt dat levende kind in tweeen, en geeft de ene een helft, en de andere een helft. 26Maar de vrouw, welker zoon de levende was, sprak tot den koning (want haar ingewand ontstak over haar zoon), en zeide: Och, mijn heer! Geef haar dat levende kind, en dood het geenszins; deze daarentegen zeide: Het zij noch het uwe noch het mijne, doorsnijdt het. 27Toen antwoordde de koning, en zeide: Geeft aan die het levende kind, den doodt het geenszins; die is zijn moeder. 28En geheel Israel hoorde dat oordeel, dat de koning geoordeeld had, en vreesde voor het aangezicht des konings; want zij zagen, dat de wijsheid Gods in hem was, om recht te doen.
