1Or Achab raccontò a Izebel tutto quello che Elia avea fatto, e come avea ucciso di spada tutti i profeti. 2Allora Izebel spedì un messo ad Elia per dirgli: "Gli dèi mi trattino con tutto il loro rigore, se domani a quest’ora non farò della vita tua quel che tu hai fatto della vita d’ognun di quelli". 3Elia, vedendo questo, si levò, e se ne andò per salvarsi la vita; giunse a Beer-Sceba, che appartiene a Giuda, e vi lasciò il suo servo; 4ma egli s’inoltrò nel deserto una giornata di cammino, andò a sedersi sotto una ginestra, ed espresse il desiderio di morire, dicendo: "Basta! Prendi ora, Eterno, l’anima mia, poiché io non valgo meglio de’ miei padri!" 5Poi si coricò, e si addormentò sotto la ginestra; quand’ecco che un angelo lo toccò, e gli disse: "Alzati e mangia". 6Egli guardò, e vide presso il suo capo una focaccia cotta su delle pietre calde, e una brocca d’acqua. Egli mangiò e bevve, poi si coricò di nuovo. 7E l’angelo dell’Eterno tornò la seconda volta, lo toccò, e disse: "Alzati e mangia, poiché il cammino è troppo lungo per te". 8Egli s’alzò, mangiò e bevve; e per la forza che quel cibo gli dette, camminò quaranta giorni e quaranta notti fino a Horeb, il monte di Dio. 9E quivi entrò in una spelonca, e vi passò la notte. Ed ecco passava l’Eterno. Un vento forte, impetuoso, schiantava i monti e spezzava le rocce dinanzi all’Eterno, ma l’Eterno non era nel vento. E, dopo il vento, un terremoto; ma l’Eterno non era nel terremoto. 12E, dopo il terremoto, un fuoco; ma l’Eterno non era nel fuoco. E, dopo il fuoco, un suono dolce e sommesso. 13Come Elia l’ebbe udito, si coperse il volto col mantello, uscì fuori, e si fermò all’ingresso della spelonca; ed ecco che una voce giunse fino a lui, e disse: "Che fai tu qui, Elia?" 14Ed egli rispose: "Io sono stato mosso da una gelosia per l’Eterno, per l’Iddio degli eserciti, perché i figliuoli d’Israele hanno abbandonato il tuo patto, han demolito i tuoi altari, e hanno ucciso colla spada i tuoi profeti; son rimasto io solo, e cercano di togliermi la vita". 15E l’Eterno gli disse: "Va’, rifa’ la strada del deserto, fino a Damasco; e quando sarai giunto colà, ungerai Hazael come re di Siria; 16ungerai pure Jehu, figliuolo di Nimsci, come re d’Israele, e ungerai Eliseo, figliuolo di Shafat da Abel-Mehola, come profeta, in luogo tuo. 17E avverrà che chi sarà scampato dalla spada di Hazael, sarà ucciso da Jehu; e chi sarà scampato dalla spada di Jehu, sarà ucciso da Eliseo. 18Ma io lascerò in Israele un resto di settemila uomini, tutti quelli il cui ginocchio non s’è piegato dinanzi a Baal, e la cui bocca non l’ha baciato". 19Elia si partì di là e trovò Eliseo figliuolo di Shafat, il quale arava, avendo dodici paia di buoi davanti a sé; ed egli stesso guidava il dodicesimo paio. Elia, avvicinatosi a lui, gli gittò addosso il suo mantello. 20Ed Eliseo, lasciati i buoi, corse dietro ad Elia, e disse: "Ti prego, lascia ch’io vada a dar un bacio a mio padre e a mia madre, e poi ti seguirò". Elia gli rispose: "Va’ e torna; ma pensa a quel che t’ho fatto!" 21Dopo essersi allontanato da Elia, Eliseo tornò a prendere un paio di bovi, e li offrì in sacrifizio; con le legna degli arnesi de’ buoi ne cosse le carni, e le diede alla gente, che le mangiò. Poi si levò, seguitò Elia, e si mise al suo servizio.
1Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I don’t make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time!” 3When he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. 4But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough. Now, O Yahweh, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.” 5He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat!” 6He looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on the coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. 7Yahweh’s angel came again the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” 8He arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the Mount of God. 9He came there to a cave, and lodged there; and behold, Yahweh’s word came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 10He said, “I have been very jealous for Yahweh, the God of Armies; for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and slain your prophets with the sword. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.” 11He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before Yahweh.” Behold, Yahweh passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before Yahweh; but Yahweh was not in the wind. After the wind an earthquake; but Yahweh was not in the earthquake. 12After the earthquake a fire passed; but Yahweh was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. 13It was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. Behold, a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14He said, “I have been very jealous for Yahweh, the God of Armies; for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and slain your prophets with the sword. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.” 15Yahweh said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. 16You shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi to be king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah to be prophet in your place. 17It shall happen, that he who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill; and he who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill. 18Yet will I leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth which has not kissed him.” 19So he departed there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing, with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed over to him, and cast his mantle on him. 20He left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, “Let me please kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” He said to him, “Go back again; for what have I done to you?” 21He returned from following him, and took the yoke of oxen, and killed them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave to the people, and they ate. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and served him.

En ziet, de HEERE ging voorbij, en een grote en sterke wind, scheurende de bergen, en brekende de steenrotsen, voor den HEERE henen; doch de HEERE was in den wind niet; en na dezen wind een aardbeving; de HEERE was ook in de aardbeving niet; 12En na de aardbeving een vuur; de HEERE was ook in het vuur niet; en na het vuur het suizen van een zachte stilte. 13En het geschiedde, als Elia dat hoorde, dat hij zijn aangezicht bewond met zijn mantel, en uitging, en stond in den ingang der spelonk. En ziet, een stem kwam tot hem, die zeide: Wat maakt gij hier, Elia? 14En hij zeide: Ik heb zeer geijverd voor den HEERE, den God der heirscharen; want de kinderen Israels hebben Uw verbond verlaten, Uw altaren afgebroken en Uw profeten met het zwaard gedood; en ik alleen ben overgebleven, en zij zoeken mijn ziel, om die weg te nemen. 15En de HEERE zeide tot hem: Ga, keer weder op uwen weg, naar de woestijn van Damaskus; en ga daar in, en zalf Hazael ten koning over Syrie. 16Daartoe zult gij Jehu, den zoon van Nimsi, zalven ten koning over Israel; en Elisa, den zoon van Safat, van Abel-mehola, zult gij tot profeet zalven in uw plaats. 17En het zal geschieden, dat Jehu hem, die van het zwaard van Hazael ontkomt, doden zal; en die van het zwaard van Jehu ontkomt, dien zal Elisa doden. 18Ook heb Ik in Israel doen overblijven zeven duizend, alle knieen, die zich niet gebogen hebben voor Baal, en allen mond, die hem niet gekust heeft. 19Zo ging hij van daar, en vond Elisa, den zoon van Safat; dezelve ploegde met twaalf juk runderen voor zich henen, en hij was bij het twaalfde; en Elia ging over tot hem, en wierp zijn mantel op hem. 20En hij verliet de runderen, en liep Elia na, en zeide: Dat ik toch mijn vader en mijn moeder kusse, daarna zal ik u navolgen.
