1Voyant la foule, Jésus monta sur la montagne ; et, après qu’il se fut assis, ses disciples s’approchèrent de lui. 2Puis, ayant ouvert la bouche , il les enseigna, et dit : 3Heureux les pauvres en esprit, car le royaume des cieux est à eux ! 4Heureux les affligés, car ils seront consolés ! 5Heureux les débonnaires, car ils hériteront la terre ! 6Heureux ceux qui ont faim et soif de la justice, car ils seront rassasiés ! 7Heureux les miséricordieux, car ils obtiendront miséricorde ! 8Heureux ceux qui ont le cœur pur, car ils verront Dieu ! 9Heureux ceux qui procurent la paix, car ils seront appelés fils de Dieu ! 10Heureux ceux qui sont persécutés pour la justice, car le royaume des cieux est à eux ! 11Heureux serez-vous, lorsqu’on vous outragera, qu’on vous persécutera et qu’on dira faussement de vous toute sorte de mal, à cause de moi. 12Réjouissez-vous et soyez dans l’allégresse, parce que votre récompense sera grande dans les cieux ; car c’est ainsi qu’on a persécuté les prophètes qui ont été avant vous. 13Vous êtes le sel de la terre. Mais si le sel perd sa saveur, avec quoi la lui rendra-t-on ? Il ne sert plus qu’à être jeté dehors, et foulé aux pieds par les hommes. 14Vous êtes la lumière du monde. Une ville située sur une montagne ne peut être cachée ; 15et on n’allume pas une lampe pour la mettre sous le boisseau, mais on la met sur le chandelier, et elle éclaire tous ceux qui sont dans la maison. 16Que votre lumière luise ainsi devant les hommes, afin qu’ils voient vos bonnes œuvres, et qu’ils glorifient votre Père qui est dans les cieux. 17Ne croyez pas que je sois venu pour abolir la loi ou les prophètes ; je suis venu non pour abolir, mais pour accomplir. 18Car, je vous le dis en vérité, tant que le ciel et la terre ne passeront point, il ne disparaîtra pas de la loi un seul iota ou un seul trait de lettre, jusqu’à ce que tout soit arrivé. 19Celui donc qui supprimera l’un de ces plus petits commandements, et qui enseignera aux hommes à faire de même, sera appelé le plus petit dans le royaume des cieux ; mais celui qui les observera, et qui enseignera à les observer, celui-là sera appelé grand dans le royaume des cieux. 20Car, je vous le dis, si votre justice ne surpasse celle des scribes et des pharisiens, vous n’entrerez point dans le royaume des cieux. 21Vous avez entendu qu’il a été dit aux anciens : Tu ne tueras point ; celui qui tuera mérite d’être puni par les juges. 22Mais moi, je vous dis que quiconque se met en colère contre son frère mérite d’être puni par les juges ; que celui qui dira à son frère : Raca ! mérite d’être puni par le sanhédrin ; et que celui qui lui dira : Insensé ! mérite d’être puni par le feu de la géhenne. 23Si donc tu présentes ton offrande à l’autel, et que là tu te souviennes que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi, 24laisse là ton offrande devant l’autel, et va d’abord te réconcilier avec ton frère ; puis, viens présenter ton offrande. 25Accorde-toi promptement avec ton adversaire, pendant que tu es en chemin avec lui, de peur qu’il ne te livre au juge, que le juge ne te livre à l’officier de justice, et que tu ne sois mis en prison. 26Je te le dis en vérité, tu ne sortiras pas de là que tu n’aies payé le dernier quadrant. 27Vous avez appris qu’il a été dit : Tu ne commettras point d’adultère. 28Mais moi, je vous dis que quiconque regarde une femme pour la convoiter a déjà commis un adultère avec elle dans son cœur. 29Si ton œil droit est pour toi une occasion de chute, arrache-le et jette-le loin de toi ; car il est avantageux pour toi qu’un seul de tes membres périsse, et que ton corps entier ne soit pas jeté dans la géhenne. 30Et si ta main droite est pour toi une occasion de chute, coupe-la et jette-la loin de toi ; car il est avantageux pour toi qu’un seul de tes membres périsse, et que ton corps entier n’aille pas dans la géhenne. 31Il a été dit : Que celui qui répudie sa femme lui donne une lettre de divorce. 32Mais moi, je vous dis que celui qui répudie sa femme, sauf pour cause d’infidélité, l’expose à devenir adultère, et que celui qui épouse une femme répudiée commet un adultère. 33Vous avez encore appris qu’il a été dit aux anciens : Tu ne te parjureras point, mais tu t’acquitteras envers le Seigneur de ce que tu as déclaré par serment. 34Mais moi, je vous dis de ne jurer aucunement, ni par le ciel, parce que c’est le trône de Dieu ; 35ni par la terre, parce que c’est son marchepied ; ni par Jérusalem, parce que c’est la ville du grand roi. 36Ne jure pas non plus par ta tête, car tu ne peux rendre blanc ou noir un seul cheveu. 37Que votre parole soit oui, oui, non, non ; ce qu’on y ajoute vient du malin. 38Vous avez appris qu’il a été dit : œil pour œil, et dent pour dent. 39Mais moi, je vous dis de ne pas résister au méchant. Si quelqu’un te frappe sur la joue droite, présente-lui aussi l’autre. 40Si quelqu’un veut plaider contre toi, et prendre ta tunique, laisse-lui encore ton manteau. 41Si quelqu’un te force à faire un mille, fais-en deux avec lui. 42Donne à celui qui te demande, et ne te détourne pas de celui qui veut emprunter de toi. 43Vous avez appris qu’il a été dit : Tu aimeras ton prochain, et tu haïras ton ennemi. 44Mais moi, je vous dis : Aimez vos ennemis, bénissez ceux qui vous maudissent, faites du bien à ceux qui vous haïssent, et priez pour ceux qui vous maltraitent et qui vous persécutent, 45afin que vous soyez fils de votre Père qui est dans les cieux ; car il fait lever son soleil sur les méchants et sur les bons, et il fait pleuvoir sur les justes et sur les injustes. 46Si vous aimez ceux qui vous aiment, quelle récompense méritez-vous ? Les publicains aussi n’agissent-ils pas de même ? 47Et si vous saluez seulement vos frères, que faites-vous d’extraordinaire ? Les païens aussi n’agissent-ils pas de même ? 48Soyez donc parfaits, comme votre Père céleste est parfait.
1Seeing the multitudes, he went up onto the mountain. When he had sat down, his disciples came to him. 2He opened his mouth and taught them, saying, 3“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. 4Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. 6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. 7Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. 8Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. 10Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. 11“Blessed are you when people reproach you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you. 13“You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men. 14You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden. 15Neither do you light a lamp, and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house. 16Even so, let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. 17“Don’t think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I didn’t come to destroy, but to fulfill. 18For most certainly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letteror one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished. 19Whoever, therefore, shall break one of these least commandments, and teach others to do so, shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven; but whoever shall do and teach them shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. 20For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. 21“You have heard that it was said to the ancient ones, ‘You shall not murder;’ and ‘Whoever shall murder shall be in danger of the judgment.’ 22But I tell you, that everyone who is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment; and whoever shall say to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council; and whoever shall say, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of the fire of Gehenna. 23“If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you, 24leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are with him on the way; lest perhaps the prosecutor deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison. 26Most certainly I tell you, you shall by no means get out of there, until you have paid the last penny. 27“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery;’ 28but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. 29If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna. 30If your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off, and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna. 31“It was also said, ‘Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorce,’ 32but I tell you that whoever puts away his wife, except for the cause of sexual immorality, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries her when she is put away commits adultery. 33“Again you have heard that it was said to them of old time, ‘You shall not make false vows, but shall perform to the Lord your vows,’ 34but I tell you, don’t swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God; 35nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36Neither shall you swear by your head, for you can’t make one hair white or black. 37But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No.’ Whatever is more than these is of the evil one. 38“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39But I tell you, don’t resist him who is evil; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40If anyone sues you to take away your coat, let him have your cloak also. 41Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. 42Give to him who asks you, and don’t turn away him who desires to borrow from you. 43“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy.’ 44But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you, 45that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust. 46For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same? 47If you only greet your friends, what more do you do than others? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same? 48Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Het deugt nergens meer toe, dan om buiten geworpen, en van de mensen vertreden te worden. 14Gij zijt het licht der wereld; een stad boven op een berg liggende, kan niet verborgen zijn. 15Noch steekt men een kaars aan, en zet die onder een koornmaat, maar op een kandelaar, en zij schijnt allen, die in het huis zijn; 16Laat uw licht alzo schijnen voor de mensen, dat zij uw goede werken mogen zien, en uw Vader, Die in de hemelen is, verheerlijken. 17Meent niet, dat Ik gekomen ben, om de wet of de profeten te ontbinden; Ik ben niet gekomen, om die te ontbinden, maar te vervullen. 18Want voorwaar zeg Ik u: Totdat de hemel en de aarde voorbijgaan, zal er niet een jota noch een tittel van de wet voorbijgaan, totdat het alles zal zijn geschied. 19Zo wie dan een van deze minste geboden zal ontbonden, en de mensen alzo zal geleerd hebben, die zal de minste genaamd worden in het Koninkrijk der hemelen; maar zo wie dezelve zal gedaan en geleerd hebben, die zal groot genaamd worden in het Koninkrijk der hemelen. 20Want Ik zeg u: Tenzij uw gerechtigheid overvloediger zij, dan der Schriftgeleerden en der Farizeen, dat gij in het Koninkrijk der hemelen geenszins zult ingaan. 21Gij hebt gehoord, dat tot de ouden gezegd is: Gij zult niet doden; maar zo wie doodt, die zal strafbaar zijn door het gericht. 22Doch Ik zeg u: Zo wie te onrecht op zijn broeder toornig is, die zal strafbaar zijn door het gericht; en wie tot zijn broeder zegt: Raka! die zal strafbaar zijn door den groten raad; maar wie zegt: Gij dwaas! die zal strafbaar zijn door het helse vuur. 23Zo gij dan uw gave zult op het altaar offeren, en aldaar gedachtig wordt, dat uw broeder iets tegen u heeft; 24Laat daar uw gave voor het altaar, en gaat heen, verzoent u eerst met uw broeder, en komt dan en offert uw gave. 25Weest haastelijk welgezind jegens uw wederpartij, terwijl gij nog met hem op den weg zijt; opdat de wederpartij niet misschien u den rechter overlevere, en de rechter u den dienaar overlevere, en gij in de gevangenis geworpen wordt. 26Voorwaar, Ik zeg u: Gij zult daar geenszins uitkomen, totdat gij den laatsten penning zult betaald hebben. 27Gij hebt gehoord, dat van de ouden gezegd is: Gij zult geen overspel doen. 28Maar Ik zeg u, dat zo wie een vrouw aan ziet, om dezelve te begeren, die heeft alrede overspel in zijn hart met haar gedaan. 29Indien dan uw rechteroog u ergert, trekt het uit, en werpt het van u; want het is u nut, dat een uwer leden verga, en niet uw gehele lichaam in de hel geworpen worde. 30En indien uw rechterhand u ergert, houwt ze af, en werpt ze van u; want het is u nut, dat een uwer leden verga, en niet uw gehele lichaam in de hel geworpen worde. 31Er is ook gezegd: Zo wie zijn vrouw verlaten zal, die geve haar een scheidbrief. 32Maar Ik zeg u, dat zo wie zijn vrouw verlaten zal, anders dan uit oorzaak van hoererij, die maakt, dat zij overspel doet; en zo wie de verlatene zal trouwen, die doet overspel. 33Wederom hebt gij gehoord, dat van de ouden gezegd is: Gij zult den eed niet breken, maar gij zult den Heere uw eden houden. 34Maar Ik zeg u: Zweert ganselijk niet, noch bij den hemel, omdat hij is de troon Gods; 35Noch bij de aarde, omdat zij is de voetbank Zijner voeten; noch bij Jeruzalem, omdat zij is de stad des groten Konings; 36Noch bij uw hoofd zult gij zweren, omdat gij niet een haar kunt wit of zwart maken; 37Maar laat zijn uw woord ja, ja; neen, neen; wat boven deze is, dat is uit den boze. 38Gij hebt gehoord, dat gezegd is: Oog om oog, en tand om tand. 39Maar Ik zeg u, dat gij den boze niet wederstaat; maar, zo wie u op de rechterwang slaat, keert hem ook de andere toe; 40En zo iemand met u rechten wil, en uw rok nemen, laat hem ook den mantel; 41En zo wie u zal dwingen een mijl te gaan, gaat met hem twee mijlen. 42Geeft dengene, die iets van u bidt, en keert u niet af van dengene, die van u lenen wil. 43Gij hebt gehoord, dat er gezegd is: Gij zult uw naaste liefhebben, en uw vijand zult gij haten. 44Maar Ik zeg u: Hebt uw vijanden lief; zegent ze, die u vervloeken; doet wel dengenen, die u haten; en bidt voor degenen, die u geweld doen, en die u vervolgen; 45Opdat gij moogt kinderen zijn uws Vaders, Die in de hemelen is; want Hij doet Zijn zon opgaan over bozen en goeden, en regent over rechtvaardigen en onrechtvaardigen. 46Want indien gij liefhebt, die u liefhebben, wat loon hebt gij? Doen ook de tollenaars niet hetzelfde? 47En indien gij uw broeders alleen groet, wat doet gij boven anderen? Doen ook niet de tollenaars alzo? 48Weest dan gijlieden volmaakt, gelijk uw Vader, Die in de hemelen is, volmaakt is.
