1Jéricho était fermée et barricadée devant les enfants d’Israël. Personne ne sortait, et personne n’entrait. 2L’Éternel dit à Josué : Vois, je livre entre tes mains Jéricho et son roi, ses vaillants soldats. 3Faites le tour de la ville, vous tous les hommes de guerre, faites une fois le tour de la ville. Tu feras ainsi pendant six jours. 4Sept sacrificateurs porteront devant l’arche sept trompettes retentissantes ; le septième jour, vous ferez sept fois le tour de la ville ; et les sacrificateurs sonneront des trompettes. 5Quand ils sonneront de la corne retentissante, quand vous entendrez le son de la trompette, tout le peuple poussera de grands cris. Alors la muraille de la ville s’écroulera, et le peuple montera, chacun devant soi. 6Josué, fils de Nun, appela les sacrificateurs, et leur dit : Portez l’arche de l’alliance, et que sept sacrificateurs portent sept trompettes retentissantes devant l’arche de l’Éternel. 7Et il dit au peuple : Marchez, faites le tour de la ville, et que les hommes armés passent devant l’arche de l’Éternel. 8Lorsque Josué eut parlé au peuple, les sept sacrificateurs qui portaient devant l’Éternel les sept trompettes retentissantes se mirent en marche et sonnèrent des trompettes. L’arche de l’alliance de l’Éternel allait derrière eux. 9Les hommes armés marchaient devant les sacrificateurs qui sonnaient des trompettes, et l’arrière-garde suivait l’arche ; pendant la marche, on sonnait des trompettes. 10Josué avait donné cet ordre au peuple : Vous ne crierez point, vous ne ferez point entendre votre voix, et il ne sortira pas un mot de votre bouche jusqu’au jour où je vous dirai : Poussez des cris ! Alors vous pousserez des cris. 11L’arche de l’Éternel fit le tour de la ville, elle fit une fois le tour ; puis on rentra dans le camp, et l’on y passa la nuit. 12Josué se leva de bon matin, et les sacrificateurs portèrent l’arche de l’Éternel. 13Les sept sacrificateurs qui portaient les sept trompettes retentissantes devant l’arche de l’Éternel se mirent en marche et sonnèrent des trompettes. Les hommes armés marchaient devant eux, et l’arrière-garde suivait l’arche de l’Éternel ; pendant la marche, on sonnait des trompettes. 14Ils firent une fois le tour de la ville, le second jour ; puis ils retournèrent dans le camp. Ils firent de même pendant six jours. 15Le septième jour, ils se levèrent de bon matin, dès l’aurore, et ils firent de la même manière sept fois le tour de la ville ; ce fut le seul jour où ils firent sept fois le tour de la ville. 16À la septième fois, comme les sacrificateurs sonnaient des trompettes, Josué dit au peuple : Poussez des cris, car l’Éternel vous a livré la ville ! 17La ville sera dévouée à l’Éternel par interdit, elle et tout ce qui s’y trouve ; mais on laissera la vie à Rahab la prostituée et à tous ceux qui seront avec elle dans la maison, parce qu’elle a caché les messagers que nous avions envoyés. 18Gardez-vous seulement de ce qui sera dévoué par interdit ; car si vous preniez de ce que vous aurez dévoué par interdit, vous mettriez le camp d’Israël en interdit et vous y jetteriez le trouble. 19Tout l’argent et tout l’or, tous les objets d’airain et de fer, seront consacrés à l’Éternel, et entreront dans le trésor de l’Éternel. 20Le peuple poussa des cris, et les sacrificateurs sonnèrent des trompettes. Lorsque le peuple entendit le son de la trompette, il poussa de grands cris, et la muraille s’écroula ; le peuple monta dans la ville, chacun devant soi. Ils s’emparèrent de la ville, 21et ils dévouèrent par interdit, au fil de l’épée, tout ce qui était dans la ville, hommes et femmes, enfants et vieillards, jusqu’aux bœufs, aux brebis et aux ânes. 22Josué dit aux deux hommes qui avaient exploré le pays : Entrez dans la maison de la femme prostituée, et faites-en sortir cette femme et tous ceux qui lui appartiennent, comme vous le lui avez juré. 23Les jeunes gens, les espions, entrèrent et firent sortir Rahab, son père, sa mère, ses frères, et tous ceux qui lui appartenaient ; ils firent sortir tous les gens de sa famille, et ils les déposèrent hors du camp d’Israël. 24Ils brûlèrent la ville et tout ce qui s’y trouvait ; seulement ils mirent dans le trésor de la maison de l’Éternel l’argent, l’or et tous les objets d’airain et de fer. 25Josué laissa la vie à Rahab la prostituée, à la maison de son père, et à tous ceux qui lui appartenaient ; elle a habité au milieu d’Israël jusqu’à ce jour, parce qu’elle avait caché les messagers que Josué avait envoyés pour explorer Jéricho. 26Ce fut alors que Josué jura, en disant : Maudit soit devant l’Éternel l’homme qui se lèvera pour rebâtir cette ville de Jéricho ! Il en jettera les fondements au prix de son premier-né, et il en posera les portes au prix de son plus jeune fils. 27L’Éternel fut avec Josué, dont la renommée se répandit dans tout le pays.
1Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the children of Israel. No one went out, and no one came in. 2Yahweh said to Joshua, “Behold, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and the mighty men of valor. 3All your men of war shall march around the city, going around the city once. You shall do this six days. 4Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. On the seventh day, you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. 5It shall be that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him.” 6Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before Yahweh’s ark.” 7They said to the people, “Advance! March around the city, and let the armed men pass on before Yahweh’s ark.” 8It was so, that when Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before Yahweh advanced, and blew the trumpets; and the ark of the covenant of Yahweh followed them. 9The armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets, and the ark went after them. The trumpets sounded as they went. 10Joshua commanded the people, saying, “You shall not shout, nor let your voice be heard, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout.” 11So he caused Yahweh’s ark to go around the city, going about it once. Then they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp. 12Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up Yahweh’s ark. 13The seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before Yahweh’s ark went on continually, and blew the trumpets: and the armed men went before them. The rear guard came after Yahweh’s ark. The trumpets sounded as they went. 14The second day they marched around the city once, and returned into the camp. They did this six days. 15On the seventh day, they rose early at the dawning of the day, and marched around the city in the same way seven times. Only on this day they marched around the city seven times. 16At the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout, for Yahweh has given you the city! 17The city shall be devoted, even it and all that is in it, to Yahweh. Only Rahab the prostitute shall live, she and all who are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent. 18But as for you, only keep yourselves from the devoted thing, lest when you have devoted it, you take of the devoted thing; so would you make the camp of Israel accursed, and trouble it. 19But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are holy to Yahweh. They shall come into Yahweh’s treasury.” 20So the people shouted, and the priests blew the trumpets. When the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city. 21They utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, both young and old, and ox, and sheep, and donkey, with the edge of the sword. 22Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house, and bring out from there the woman and all that she has, as you swore to her.” 23The young men who were spies went in, and brought out Rahab with her father, her mother, her brothers, and all that she had. They also brought out all her relatives, and they set them outside of the camp of Israel. 24They burnt the city with fire, and all that was in it. Only they put the silver, the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron into the treasury of Yahweh’s house. 25But Rahab the prostitute, her father’s household, and all that she had, Joshua saved alive. She lived in the midst of Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers, whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho. 26Joshua commanded them with an oath at that time, saying, “Cursed is the man before Yahweh, who rises up and builds this city Jericho. With the loss of his firstborn shall he lay its foundation, and with the loss of his youngest son shall he set up its gates.” 27So Yahweh was with Joshua; and his fame was in all the land.
1(Jericho nu sloot de poorten toe, en was gesloten, voor het aangezicht van de kinderen Israels; er ging niemand uit, en er ging niemand in.) 2Toen zeide de HEERE tot Jozua: Zie, Ik heb Jericho met haar koning en strijdbare helden in uw hand gegeven. 3Gij dan allen, die krijgslieden zijt, zult rondom de stad gaan, de stad omringende eenmaal; alzo zult gij doen zes dagen lang. 4En zeven priesters zullen zeven ramsbazuinen dragen, voor de ark; en gijlieden zult op den zevenden dag de stad zevenmaal omgaan; en de priesters zullen met de bazuinen blazen. 5En het zal geschieden, als men langzaam met den ramshoorn blaast, als gijlieden het geluid der bazuin hoort, zo zal al het volk juichen met een groot gejuich; dan zal de stadsmuur onder zich vallen, en het volk zal daarin klimmen, een iegelijk tegenover zich. 6Toen riep Jozua, de zoon van Nun, de priesters, en zeide tot hen: Draagt de ark des verbonds, en dat zeven priesters zeven ramsbazuinen dragen, voor de ark des HEEREN. 7En tot het volk zeide hij: Trekt door en gaat rondom deze stad; en wie toegerust is, die ga door voor de ark des HEEREN. 8En het geschiedde, gelijk Jozua tot het volk gesproken had, zo gingen de zeven priesters, dragende zeven ramsbazuinen, voor het aangezicht des HEEREN; zij trokken door en bliezen met de bazuinen; en de ark des verbonds des HEEREN volgde hen na; 9En wie toegerust was, ging voor het aangezicht der priesteren, die de bazuinen bliezen; en de achtertocht volgde de ark na, terwijl men ging en blies met de bazuinen. 10Jozua nu had het volk geboden, zeggende: Gij zult niet juichen, ja, gij zult uw stem niet laten horen, en geen woord zal er uit uw mond uitgaan, tot op den dag, wanneer ik tot ulieden zeggen zal: Juicht! dan zult gij juichen. 11En hij deed de ark des HEEREN rondom de stad gaan, omringende dezelve eenmaal; toen kwamen zij weder in het leger, en vernachtten in het leger. 12Daarna stond Jozua des morgens vroeg op, en de priesters droegen de ark des HEEREN. 13En de zeven priesters, dragende de zeven ramsbazuinen voor de ark des HEEREN, gingen voort, en bliezen met de bazuinen; en de toegerusten gingen voor hun aangezichten, en de achtertocht volgde de ark des HEEREN na, terwijl men ging en blies met de bazuinen. 14Alzo gingen zij eenmaal rondom de stad op den tweeden dag; en zij keerden weder in het leger. Alzo deden zij zes dagen lang. 15En het geschiedde op den zevenden dag, dat zij zich vroeg opmaakten, met het opgaan des dageraads, en zij gingen rondom de stad, naar dezelve wijze, zevenmaal; alleenlijk op dien dag gingen zij zevenmaal rondom de stad. 16En het geschiedde ten zevenden male, als de priesters met de bazuinen bliezen, dat Jozua tot het volk sprak: Juicht, want de HEERE heeft ulieden de stad gegeven! 17Doch deze stad zal den HEERE verbannen zijn, zij en al wat daarin is; alleenlijk zal de hoer Rachab levend blijven, zij en allen, die met haar in het huis zijn, omdat zij de boden, die wij uitgezonden hadden, verborgen heeft. 18Alleenlijk dat gijlieden u wacht van het verbannene, opdat gij u misschien niet verbant, mits nemende van het verbannene, en het leger van Israel niet stelt tot een ban, noch datzelve beroert. 19Maar al het zilver en goud, en de koperen en ijzeren vaten, zullen den HEERE heilig zijn; tot den schat des HEEREN zullen zij komen. 20Het volk dan juichte, als zij met de bazuinen bliezen; en het geschiedde, als het volk het geluid der bazuin hoorde, zo juichte het volk met een groot gejuich; en de muur viel onder zich, en het volk klom in de stad, een ieder tegenover zich, en zij namen de stad in. 21En zij verbanden alles, wat in de stad was, van den man tot de vrouw toe, van het kind tot den oude, en tot den os, en het klein vee, en den ezel, door de scherpte des zwaards. 22Jozua nu zeide tot de twee mannen, de verspieders des lands: Gaat in het huis der vrouw, der hoer, en brengt die vrouw van daar uit, met al wat zij heeft, gelijk als gij haar gezworen hebt. 23Toen gingen de jongelingen, de verspieders, daarin en brachten er Rachab uit, en haar vader, en haar moeder, en haar broeders, en al wat zij had; ook brachten zij uit al haar huisgezinnen, en zij stelden hen buiten het leger van Israel. 24De stad nu verbrandden zij met vuur, en al wat daarin was; alleenlijk het zilver en goud, mitsgaders de koperen en ijzeren vaten, gaven zij tot den schat van het huis des HEEREN. 25Dus liet Jozua de hoer Rachab leven, en het huisgezin haars vaders, en al wat zij had; en zij heeft gewoond in het midden van Israel tot op dezen dag, omdat zij de boden verborgen had, die Jozua gezonden had, om Jericho te verspieden. 26En ter zelver tijd bezwoer hen Jozua, zeggende: Vervloekt zij die man voor het aangezicht des HEEREN, die zich opmaken en deze stad Jericho bouwen zal; dat hij ze grondveste op zijn eerstgeborenen zoon, en haar poorten stelle op zijn jongsten zoon! 27Alzo was de HEERE met Jozua; en zijn gerucht liep door het ganse land.
