1Lorsque tous les rois des Amoréens à l’occident du Jourdain et tous les rois des Cananéens près de la mer apprirent que l’Éternel avait mis à sec les eaux du Jourdain devant les enfants d’Israël jusqu’à ce que nous eussions passé, ils perdirent courage et furent consternés à l’aspect des enfants d’Israël. 2En ce temps-là, l’Éternel dit à Josué : Fais-toi des couteaux de pierre, et circoncis de nouveau les enfants d’Israël, une seconde fois. 3Josué se fit des couteaux de pierre, et il circoncit les enfants d’Israël sur la colline d’Araloth. 4Voici la raison pour laquelle Josué les circoncit. Tout le peuple sorti d’Égypte, les mâles, tous les hommes de guerre, étaient morts dans le désert, pendant la route, après leur sortie d’Égypte. 5Tout ce peuple sorti d’Égypte était circoncis ; mais tout le peuple né dans le désert, pendant la route, après la sortie d’Égypte, n’avait point été circoncis. 6Car les enfants d’Israël avaient marché quarante ans dans le désert jusqu’à la destruction de toute la nation des hommes de guerre qui étaient sortis d’Égypte et qui n’avaient point écouté la voix de l’Éternel ; l’Éternel leur jura de ne pas leur faire voir le pays qu’il avait juré à leurs pères de nous donner, pays où coulent le lait et le miel. 7Ce sont leurs enfants qu’il établit à leur place ; et Josué les circoncit, car ils étaient incirconcis, parce qu’on ne les avait point circoncis pendant la route. 8Lorsqu’on eut achevé de circoncire toute la nation, ils restèrent à leur place dans le camp jusqu’à leur guérison. 9L’Éternel dit à Josué : Aujourd’hui, j’ai roulé de dessus vous l’opprobre de l’Égypte. Et ce lieu fut appelé du nom de Guilgal jusqu’à ce jour. 10Les enfants d’Israël campèrent à Guilgal ; et ils célébrèrent la Pâque le quatorzième jour du mois, sur le soir, dans les plaines de Jéricho. 11Ils mangèrent du blé du pays le lendemain de la Pâque, des pains sans levain et du grain rôti ; ils en mangèrent ce même jour. 12La manne cessa le lendemain de la Pâque, quand ils mangèrent du blé du pays ; les enfants d’Israël n’eurent plus de manne, et ils mangèrent des produits du pays de Canaan cette année-là. 13Comme Josué était près de Jéricho, il leva les yeux, et regarda. Voici, un homme se tenait debout devant lui, son épée nue dans la main. Il alla vers lui, et lui dit : Es-tu des nôtres ou de nos ennemis ? 14Il répondit : Non, mais je suis le chef de l’armée de l’Éternel, j’arrive maintenant. Josué tomba le visage contre terre, se prosterna, et lui dit : Qu’est-ce que mon seigneur dit à son serviteur ? 15Et le chef de l’armée de l’Éternel dit à Josué : Ote tes souliers de tes pieds, car le lieu sur lequel tu te tiens est saint. Et Josué fit ainsi.
1When all the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, who were by the sea, heard how Yahweh had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we had passed over, their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel. 2At that time, Yahweh said to Joshua, “Make flint knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.” 3Joshua made himself flint knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins. 4This is the reason Joshua circumcised: all the people who came out of Egypt, who were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt. 5For all the people who came out were circumcised; but all the people who were born in the wilderness by the way as they came out of Egypt had not been circumcised. 6For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, until all the nation, even the men of war who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they didn’t listen to the voice of Yahweh. Yahweh swore to them that he wouldn’t let them see the land which Yahweh swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. 7Their children, whom he raised up in their place, were circumcised by Joshua; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them on the way. 8When they were done circumcising the whole nation, they stayed in their places in the camp until they were healed. 9Yahweh said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you.” Therefore the name of that place was called Gilgal, to this day. 10The children of Israel encamped in Gilgal. They kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho. 11They ate unleavened cakes and parched grain of the produce of the land on the next day after the Passover, in the same day. 12The manna ceased on the next day, after they had eaten of the produce of the land. The children of Israel didn’t have manna any more; but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year. 13When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man stood in front of him with his sword drawn in his hand. Joshua went to him, and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?” 14He said, “No; but I have come now as commander of Yahweh’s army.” Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and worshiped, and said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?” 15The prince of Yahweh’s army said to Joshua, “Take your shoes off of your feet; for the place on which you stand is holy.” Joshua did so.
1En het geschiedde, toen al de koningen der Amorieten, die aan deze zijde van de Jordaan westwaarts, en al de koningen der Kanaanieten, die aan de zee waren, hoorden, dat de HEERE de wateren van de Jordaan had uitgedroogd, voor het aangezicht der kinderen Israels, totdat wij daardoor gegaan waren; zo versmolt hun hart, en er was geen moed meer in hen, voor het aangezicht der kinderen Israels. 2Te dier tijd sprak de HEERE tot Jozua: Maak u stenen messen, en besnijd wederom de kinderen Israels ten tweeden maal. 3Toen maakte zich Jozua stenen messen, en besneed de kinderen Israels op den heuvel der voorhuiden. 4Dit nu was de oorzaak, waarom hen Jozua besneed: al het volk, dat uit Egypte getogen was, de manspersonen, alle krijgslieden, waren gestorven in de woestijn, op den weg, nadat zij uit Egypte getogen waren. 5Want al het volk, dat er uittoog, was besneden; maar al het volk, dat geboren was in de woestijn op den weg, nadat zij uit Egypte getrokken waren, hadden zij niet besneden. 6Want de kinderen Israels wandelden veertig jaren in de woestijn, totdat vergaan was het ganse volk der krijgslieden, die uit Egypte gegaan waren; die de stem des HEEREN niet gehoorzaam geweest waren, denwelken de HEERE gezworen had, dat Hij hun niet zoude laten zien het land, hetwelk de HEERE hun vaderen gezworen had ons te zullen geven, een land vloeiende van melk en honig. 7Maar hun zonen heeft Hij aan hun plaats gesteld; die heeft Jozua besneden, omdat zij de voorhuid hadden; want zij hadden hen op den weg niet besneden. 8En het geschiedde, als men een einde gemaakt had van al dat volk te besnijden, zo bleven zij in hun plaats in het leger, totdat zij genezen waren. 9Verder sprak de HEERE tot Jozua: Heden heb Ik den smaad van Egypte van ulieden afgewenteld; daarom noemde men den naam dier plaats Gilgal, tot op dezen dag. 10Terwijl de kinderen Israels te Gilgal gelegerd lagen, zo hielden zij het pascha op den veertienden dag derzelver maand, in den avond, op de vlakke velden van Jericho. 11En zij aten van het overjarige koren des lands, des anderen daags van het pascha, ongezuurde broden en verzengde aren, even op dienzelven dag. 12En het Manna hield op des anderen daags, nadat zij van des lands overjarige koren gegeten hadden; en de kinderen Israels hadden geen Manna meer, maar zij aten in hetzelve jaar van de inkomst des lands Kanaan. 13Voorts geschiedde het, als Jozua bij Jericho was, dat hij zijn ogen ophief, en zag toe, en ziet, er stond een Man tegenover hem, Die een uitgetogen zwaard in Zijn hand had. En Jozua ging tot Hem, en zeide tot Hem: Zijt Gij van ons, of van onze vijanden? 14En Hij zeide: Neen, maar Ik ben de Vorst van het heir des HEEREN: Ik ben nu gekomen! Toen viel Jozua op zijn aangezicht ter aarde en aanbad, en zeide tot Hem: Wat spreekt mijn Heere tot Zijn knecht? 15Toen zeide de Vorst van het heir des HEEREN tot Jozua: Trek uw schoenen af van uw voeten; want de plaats, waarop gij staat, is heilig. En Jozua deed alzo.
