1Joram, fils d’Achab, régna sur Israël à Samarie, la dix-huitième année de Josaphat, roi de Juda. Il régna douze ans. 2Il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux de l’Éternel, non pas toutefois comme son père et sa mère. Il renversa les statues de Baal que son père avait faites ; 3mais il se livra aux péchés de Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, qui avait fait pécher Israël, et il ne s’en détourna point. 4Méscha, roi de Moab, possédait des troupeaux, et il payait au roi d’Israël un tribut de cent mille agneaux et de cent mille béliers avec leur laine. 5À la mort d’Achab, le roi de Moab se révolta contre le roi d’Israël. 6Le roi Joram sortit alors de Samarie, et passa en revue tout Israël. 7Il se mit en marche, et il fit dire à Josaphat, roi de Juda : Le roi de Moab s’est révolté contre moi ; veux-tu venir avec moi attaquer Moab ? Josaphat répondit : J’irai, moi comme toi, mon peuple comme ton peuple, mes chevaux comme tes chevaux. 8Et il dit : Par quel chemin monterons-nous ? Joram dit : Par le chemin du désert d’Édom. 9Le roi d’Israël, le roi de Juda et le roi d’Édom, partirent ; et après une marche de sept jours, ils manquèrent d’eau pour l’armée et pour les bêtes qui la suivaient. 10Alors le roi d’Israël dit : Hélas ! l’Éternel a appelé ces trois rois pour les livrer entre les mains de Moab. 11Mais Josaphat dit : N’y a-t-il ici aucun prophète de l’Éternel, par qui nous puissions consulter l’Éternel ? L’un des serviteurs du roi d’Israël répondit : Il y a ici Élisée, fils de Schaphath, qui versait l’eau sur les mains d’Élie. 12Et Josaphat dit : La parole de l’Éternel est avec lui. Le roi d’Israël, Josaphat et le roi d’Édom, descendirent auprès de lui. 13Élisée dit au roi d’Israël : Qu’y a-t-il entre moi et toi ? Va vers les prophètes de ton père et vers les prophètes de ta mère. Et le roi d’Israël lui dit : Non ! car l’Éternel a appelé ces trois rois pour les livrer entre les mains de Moab. 14Élisée dit : L’Éternel des armées, dont je suis le serviteur, est vivant ! si je n’avais égard à Josaphat, roi de Juda, je ne ferais aucune attention à toi et je ne te regarderais pas. 15Maintenant, amenez-moi un joueur de harpe. Et comme le joueur de harpe jouait, la main de l’Éternel fut sur Élisée. 16Et il dit : Ainsi parle l’Éternel : Faites dans cette vallée des fosses, des fosses ! 17Car ainsi parle l’Éternel : Vous n’apercevrez point de vent et vous ne verrez point de pluie, et cette vallée se remplira d’eau, et vous boirez, vous, vos troupeaux et votre bétail. 18Mais cela est peu de chose aux yeux de l’Éternel. Il livrera Moab entre vos mains ; 19vous frapperez toutes les villes fortes et toutes les villes d’élite, vous abattrez tous les bons arbres, vous boucherez toutes les sources d’eau, et vous ruinerez avec des pierres tous les meilleurs champs. 20Or le matin, au moment de la présentation de l’offrande, voici, l’eau arriva du chemin d’Édom, et le pays fut rempli d’eau. 21Cependant, tous les Moabites ayant appris que les rois montaient pour les attaquer, on convoqua tous ceux en âge de porter les armes et même au-dessus, et ils se tinrent sur la frontière. 22Ils se levèrent de bon matin, et quand le soleil brilla sur les eaux, les Moabites virent en face d’eux les eaux rouges comme du sang. 23Ils dirent : C’est du sang ! les rois ont tiré l’épée entre eux, ils se sont frappés les uns les autres ; maintenant, Moabites, au pillage ! 24Et ils marchèrent contre le camp d’Israël. Mais Israël se leva, et frappa Moab, qui prit la fuite devant eux. Ils pénétrèrent dans le pays, et frappèrent Moab. 25Ils renversèrent les villes, ils jetèrent chacun des pierres dans tous les meilleurs champs et les en remplirent, ils bouchèrent toutes les sources d’eau, et ils abattirent tous les bons arbres ; et les frondeurs enveloppèrent et battirent Kir-Haréseth, dont on ne laissa que les pierres. 26Le roi de Moab, voyant qu’il avait le dessous dans le combat, prit avec lui sept cents hommes tirant l’épée pour se frayer un passage jusqu’au roi d’Édom ; mais ils ne purent pas. 27Il prit alors son fils premier-né, qui devait régner à sa place, et il l’offrit en holocauste sur la muraille. Et une grande indignation s’empara d’Israël, qui s’éloigna du roi de Moab et retourna dans son pays.
1Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years. 2He did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, but not like his father, and like his mother; for he put away the pillar of Baal that his father had made. 3Nevertheless he held to the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin; he didn’t depart from it. 4Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep breeder; and he rendered to the king of Israel the wool of one hundred thousand lambs, and of one hundred thousand rams. 5But when Ahab was dead, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel. 6King Jehoram went out of Samaria at that time, and mustered all Israel. 7He went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me against Moab to battle?” He said, “I will go up. I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.” 8He said, “Which way shall we go up?” He answered, “The way of the wilderness of Edom.” 9So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom; and they made a circuit of seven days’ journey. There was no water for the army, nor for the animals that followed them. 10The king of Israel said, “Alas! For Yahweh has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.” 11But Jehoshaphat said, “Isn’t there here a prophet of Yahweh, that we may inquire of Yahweh by him?” One of the king of Israel’s servants answered, “Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.” 12Jehoshaphat said, “Yahweh’s word is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him. 13Elisha said to the king of Israel, “What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father, and to the prophets of your mother.” The king of Israel said to him, “No; for Yahweh has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.” 14Elisha said, “As Yahweh of Armies lives, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I respect the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward you, nor see you. 15But now bring me a minstrel.” When the minstrel played, the hand of Yahweh came on him. 16He said, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Make this valley full of trenches.’ 17For thus says Yahweh, ‘You will not see wind, neither will you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, and you will drink, both you and your livestock and your animals. 18This is but a light thing in the sight of Yahweh. He will also deliver the Moabites into your hand. 19You shall strike every fortified city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all springs of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.’” 20In the morning, about the time of offering the offering, behold, water came by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water. 21Now when all the Moabites heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, they gathered themselves together, all who were able to put on armor, and upward, and stood on the border. 22They rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone on the water, and the Moabites saw the water over against them as red as blood. 23They said, “This is blood. The kings are surely destroyed, and they have struck each other. Now therefore, Moab, to the plunder!” 24When they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and struck the Moabites, so that they fled before them; and they went forward into the land smiting the Moabites. 25They beat down the cities; and on every good piece of land they cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the springs of water, and felled all the good trees, until in Kir Hareseth only they left its stones; however the men armed with slings went about it, and struck it. 26When the king of Moab saw that the battle was too severe for him, he took with him seven hundred men who drew sword, to break through to the king of Edom; but they could not. 27Then he took his eldest son who would have reigned in his place, and offered him for a burnt offering on the wall. There was great wrath against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.
1Joram nu, de zoon van Achab, werd koning over Israel te Samaria, in het achttiende jaar van Josafat, den koning van Juda, en hij regeerde twaalf jaren. 2En hij deed dat kwaad was in de ogen des HEEREN, doch niet gelijk zijn vader en gelijk zijn moeder; want hij deed dag opgerichte beeld van Baal weg, hetwelk zijn vader gemaakt had. 3Evenwel hing hij de zonden van Jerobeam, den zoon van Nebat, aan, die Israel deed zondigen; hij week daarvan niet af. 4Mesa nu, de koning der Moabieten, was een veehandelaar, en bracht op aan den koning van Israel honderd duizend lammeren, en honderd duizend rammen met de wol. 5Maar het geschiedde, als Achab gestorven was, dat de koning der Moabieten van den koning van Israel afviel. 6Zo toog de koning Joram ter zelfder tijd uit Samaria, en monsterde gans Israel. 7En hij ging heen, en zond tot Josafat, den koning van Juda, zeggende: De koning der Moabieten is van mij afgevallen, zult gij met mij trekken in den oorlog tegen de Moabieten? En hij zeide: Ik zal opkomen; zo zal ik zijn, gelijk gij zijt, zo mijn volk als uw volk, zo mijn paarden als uw paarden. 8En hij zeide: Door welken weg zullen wij optrekken? Hij dan zeide: Door den weg der woestijn van Edom. 9Alzo toog de koning van Israel heen, en de koning van Juda, en de koning van Edom; en als zij zeven dagreizen omgetogen waren, zo had het leger en het vee, dat hen navolgde, geen water. 10Toen zeide de koning van Israel: Ach, dat de HEERE deze drie koningen geroepen heeft, om die in der Moabieten hand te geven! 11En Josafat zeide: Is hier geen profeet des HEEREN, dat wij door hem den HEERE mochten vragen? Toen antwoordde een van de knechten des konings van Israel, en zeide: Hier is Elisa, de zoon van Safat, die water op Elia's handen goot. 12En Josafat zeide: Des HEEREN woord is bij hem. Zo togen tot hem af de koning van Israel, en Josafat, en de koning van Edom. 13Maar Elisa zeide tot den koning van Israel: Wat heb ik met u te doen? Ga heen tot de profeten uws vaders, en tot de profeten uwer moeder. Doch de koning van Israel zeide tot hem: Neen, want de HEERE heeft deze drie koningen geroepen, om die in der Moabieten hand te geven. 14En Elisa zeide: Zo waarachtig als de HEERE der heirscharen leeft, voor Wiens aangezicht ik sta, zo ik niet het aangezicht van Josafat, den koning van Juda, opnam, ik zou u niet aanschouwen, noch u aanzien! 15Nu dan, brengt mij een speelman. En het geschiedde, als de speelman op de snaren speelde, dat de hand des HEEREN op hem kwam. 16En hij zeide: Zo zegt de HEERE: Maakt in dit dal vele grachten. 17Want zo zegt de HEERE: Gijlieden zult geen wind zien, en gij zult geen regen zien; nochtans zal dit dal met water vervuld worden, zodat gij zult drinken, gij en uw vee, en uw beesten. 18Daartoe is dat slecht in de ogen des HEEREN, Hij zal ook de Moabieten in ulieder hand geven. 19En gij zult alle vaste steden, en alle uitgelezene steden slaan, en zult alle goede bomen vellen, en zult alle waterfonteinen stoppen; en alle goede stukken lands zult gij met stenen verderven. 20En het geschiedde des morgens, als men het spijsoffer offert, dat er, ziet, water door den weg van Edom kwam, en het land met water vervuld werd. 21Toen nu al de Moabieten hoorden, dat koningen opgetogen waren, om tegen hen te strijden, zo werden zij samen geroepen, van al degenen af, die den gordel aangordden en daarboven, en zij stonden aan de landpale. 22En toen zij zich des morgens vroeg opmaakten, en de zon over dat water oprees, zagen de Moabieten dat water tegenover rood, gelijk bloed. 23En zij zeiden: Dit is bloed; de koningen hebben voorzeker zich met het zwaard verdorven, en hebben de een de ander verslagen; nu dan aan den buit, gij Moabieten! 24Maar als zij aan het leger van Israel kwamen, maakten zich de Israelieten op, en sloegen de Moabieten; en zij vloden van hun aangezicht; ja, zij kwamen in het land, slaande ook de Moabieten. 25De steden nu braken zij af, en een iegelijk wierp zijn steen op alle goede stukken lands, en zij vulden ze, en stopten alle waterfonteinen, en velden alle goede bomen, totdat zij in Kir-hareseth alleen de stenen daarvan lieten overblijven; en de slingeraars omsingelden en sloegen hen. 26Doch als de koning der Moabieten zag, dat hem de strijd te sterk was, nam hij tot zich zevenhonderd mannen, die het zwaard uittogen, om door te breken tegen den koning van Edom; maar zij konden niet. 27Toen nam hij zijn eerstgeboren zoon, die in zijn plaats koning zou worden, en offerde hem ten brandoffer op den muur. Daaruit werd een zeer grote toorn in Israel; daarom trokken zij van hem af, en keerden weder in hun land.
