1La douzième année d’Achaz, roi de Juda, Osée, fils d’Éla, régna sur Israël à Samarie. Il régna neuf ans. 2Il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux de l’Éternel, non pas toutefois comme les rois d’Israël qui avaient été avant lui. 3Salmanasar, roi d’Assyrie, monta contre lui ; et Osée lui fut assujetti, et lui paya un tribut. 4Mais le roi d’Assyrie découvrit une conspiration chez Osée, qui avait envoyé des messagers à So, roi d’Égypte, et qui ne payait plus annuellement le tribut au roi d’Assyrie. Le roi d’Assyrie le fit enfermer et enchaîner dans une prison. 5Et le roi d’Assyrie parcourut tout le pays, et monta contre Samarie, qu’il assiégea pendant trois ans. 6La neuvième année d’Osée, le roi d’Assyrie prit Samarie, et emmena Israël captif en Assyrie. Il les fit habiter à Chalach, et sur le Chabor, fleuve de Gozan, et dans les villes des Mèdes. 7Cela arriva parce que les enfants d’Israël péchèrent contre l’Éternel, leur Dieu, qui les avait fait monter du pays d’Égypte, de dessous la main de Pharaon, roi d’Égypte, et parce qu’ils craignirent d’autres dieux. 8Ils suivirent les coutumes des nations que l’Éternel avait chassées devant les enfants d’Israël, et celles que les rois d’Israël avaient établies. 9Les enfants d’Israël firent en secret contre l’Éternel, leur Dieu, des choses qui ne sont pas bien. Ils se bâtirent des hauts lieux dans toutes leurs villes, depuis les tours des gardes jusqu’aux villes fortes. 10Ils se dressèrent des statues et des idoles sur toute colline élevée et sous tout arbre vert. 11Et là ils brûlèrent des parfums sur tous les hauts lieux, comme les nations que l’Éternel avait chassées devant eux, et ils firent des choses mauvaises, par lesquelles ils irritèrent l’Éternel. 12Ils servirent les idoles dont l’Éternel leur avait dit : Vous ne ferez pas cela. 13L’Éternel fit avertir Israël et Juda par tous ses prophètes, par tous les voyants, et leur dit : Revenez de vos mauvaises voies, et observez mes commandements et mes ordonnances, en suivant entièrement la loi que j’ai prescrite à vos pères et que je vous ai envoyée par mes serviteurs les prophètes. 14Mais ils n’écoutèrent point, et ils roidirent leur cou, comme leurs pères, qui n’avaient pas cru en l’Éternel, leur Dieu. 15Ils rejetèrent ses lois, l’alliance qu’il avait faite avec leurs pères, et les avertissements qu’il leur avait adressés. Ils allèrent après des choses de néant et ne furent eux-mêmes que néant, et après les nations qui les entouraient et que l’Éternel leur avait défendu d’imiter. 16Ils abandonnèrent tous les commandements de l’Éternel, leur Dieu, ils se firent deux veaux en fonte, ils fabriquèrent des idoles d’Astarté, ils se prosternèrent devant toute l’armée des cieux, et ils servirent Baal. 17Ils firent passer par le feu leurs fils et leurs filles, ils se livrèrent à la divination et aux enchantements, et ils se vendirent pour faire ce qui est mal aux yeux de l’Éternel, afin de l’irriter. 18Aussi l’Éternel s’est-il fortement irrité contre Israël, et les a-t-il éloignés de sa face. -Il n’est resté que la seule tribu de Juda. 19Juda même n’avait pas gardé les commandements de l’Éternel, son Dieu, et ils avaient suivi les coutumes établies par Israël. - 20L’Éternel a rejeté toute la race d’Israël ; il les a humiliés, il les a livrés entre les mains des pillards, et il a fini par les chasser loin de sa face. 21Car Israël s’était détaché de la maison de David, et ils avaient fait roi Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, qui les avait détournés de l’Éternel, et avait fait commettre à Israël un grand péché. 22Les enfants d’Israël s’étaient livrés à tous les péchés que Jéroboam avait commis ; ils ne s’en détournèrent point, 23jusqu’à ce que l’Éternel eût chassé Israël loin de sa face, comme il l’avait annoncé par tous ses serviteurs les prophètes. Et Israël a été emmené captif loin de son pays en Assyrie, où il est resté jusqu’à ce jour. 24Le roi d’Assyrie fit venir des gens de Babylone, de Cutha, d’Avva, de Hamath et de Sepharvaïm, et les établit dans les villes de Samarie à la place des enfants d’Israël. Ils prirent possession de Samarie, et ils habitèrent dans ses villes. 25Lorsqu’ils commencèrent à y habiter, ils ne craignaient pas l’Éternel, et l’Éternel envoya contre eux des lions qui les tuaient. 26On dit au roi d’Assyrie : Les nations que tu as transportées et établies dans les villes de Samarie ne connaissent pas la manière de servir le dieu du pays, et il a envoyé contre elles des lions qui les font mourir, parce qu’elles ne connaissent pas la manière de servir le dieu du pays. 27Le roi d’Assyrie donna cet ordre : Faites-y aller l’un des prêtres que vous avez emmenés de là en captivité ; qu’il parte pour s’y établir, et qu’il leur enseigne la manière de servir le dieu du pays. 28Un des prêtres qui avaient été emmenés captifs de Samarie vint s’établir à Béthel, et leur enseigna comment ils devaient craindre l’Éternel. 29Mais les nations firent chacune leurs dieux dans les villes qu’elles habitaient, et les placèrent dans les maisons des hauts lieux bâties par les Samaritains. 30Les gens de Babylone firent Succoth-Benoth, les gens de Cuth firent Nergal, les gens de Hamath firent Aschima, 31ceux d’Avva firent Nibchaz et Tharthak ; ceux de Sepharvaïm brûlaient leurs enfants par le feu en l’honneur d’Adrammélec et d’Anammélec, dieux de Sepharvaïm. 32Ils craignaient aussi l’Éternel, et ils se créèrent des prêtres des hauts lieux pris parmi tout le peuple : ces prêtres offraient pour eux des sacrifices dans les maisons des hauts lieux. 33Ainsi ils craignaient l’Éternel, et ils servaient en même temps leurs dieux d’après la coutume des nations d’où on les avait transportés. 34Ils suivent encore aujourd’hui leurs premiers usages : ils ne craignent point l’Éternel, et ils ne se conforment ni à leurs lois et à leurs ordonnances, ni à la loi et aux commandements prescrits par l’Éternel aux enfants de Jacob qu’il appela du nom d’Israël. 35L’Éternel avait fait alliance avec eux, et leur avait donné cet ordre : Vous ne craindrez point d’autres dieux ; vous ne vous prosternerez point devant eux, vous ne les servirez point, et vous ne leur offrirez point de sacrifices. 36Mais vous craindrez l’Éternel, qui vous a fait monter du pays d’Égypte avec une grande puissance et à bras étendu ; c’est devant lui que vous vous prosternerez, et c’est à lui que vous offrirez des sacrifices. 37Vous observerez et mettrez toujours en pratique les préceptes, les ordonnances, la loi et les commandements, qu’il a écrits pour vous, et vous ne craindrez point d’autres dieux. 38Vous n’oublierez pas l’alliance que j’ai faite avec vous, et vous ne craindrez point d’autres dieux. 39Mais vous craindrez l’Éternel, votre Dieu ; et il vous délivrera de la main de tous vos ennemis. 40Et ils n’ont point obéi, et ils ont suivi leurs premiers usages. 41Ces nations craignaient l’Éternel et servaient leurs images ; et leurs enfants et les enfants de leurs enfants font jusqu’à ce jour ce que leurs pères ont fait.
1In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, Hoshea the son of Elah began to reign in Samaria over Israel for nine years. 2He did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, yet not as the kings of Israel who were before him. 3Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria; and Hoshea became his servant, and brought him tribute. 4The king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hoshea; for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and offered no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year: therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison. 5Then the king of Assyria came up throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria, and besieged it three years. 6In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away to Assyria, and placed them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes. 7It was so, because the children of Israel had sinned against Yahweh their God, who brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods, 8and walked in the statutes of the nations, whom Yahweh cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they made. 9The children of Israel did secretly things that were not right against Yahweh their God: and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city; 10and they set them up pillars and Asherah poles on every high hill, and under every green tree; 11and there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the nations whom Yahweh carried away before them; and they worked wicked things to provoke Yahweh to anger; 12and they served idols, of which Yahweh had said to them, “You shall not do this thing.” 13Yet Yahweh testified to Israel, and to Judah, by every prophet, and every seer, saying, “Turn from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets.” 14Notwithstanding, they would not listen, but hardened their neck, like the neck of their fathers, who didn’t believe in Yahweh their God. 15They rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified to them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and followed the nations that were around them, concerning whom Yahweh had commanded them that they should not do like them. 16They abandoned all the commandments of Yahweh their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made an Asherah, and worshiped all the army of the sky, and served Baal. 17They caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, to provoke him to anger. 18Therefore Yahweh was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only. 19Also Judah didn’t keep the commandments of Yahweh their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made. 20Yahweh rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of raiders, until he had cast them out of his sight. 21For he tore Israel from the house of David; and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king: and Jeroboam drove Israel from following Yahweh, and made them sin a great sin. 22The children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they didn’t depart from them; 23until Yahweh removed Israel out of his sight, as he spoke by all his servants the prophets. So Israel was carried away out of their own land to Assyria to this day. 24The king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Avva, and from Hamath and Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel; and they possessed Samaria, and lived in the cities of it. 25So it was, at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they didn’t fear Yahweh: therefore Yahweh sent lions among them, which killed some of them. 26Therefore they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying, “The nations which you have carried away, and placed in the cities of Samaria, don’t know the law of the god of the land. Therefore he has sent lions among them, and behold, they kill them, because they don’t know the law of the god of the land.” 27Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, “Carry there one of the priests whom you brought from there; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the law of the god of the land.” 28So one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and lived in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear Yahweh. 29However every nation made gods of their own, and put them in the houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities in which they lived. 30The men of Babylon made Succoth Benoth, and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima, 31and the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and the Sepharvites burnt their children in the fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. 32So they feared Yahweh, and made to them from among themselves priests of the high places, who sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places. 33They feared Yahweh, and served their own gods, after the ways of the nations from among whom they had been carried away. 34To this day they do what they did before: they don’t fear Yahweh, neither do they follow their statutes, or their ordinances, or the law or the commandment which Yahweh commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel; 35with whom Yahweh had made a covenant, and commanded them, saying, “You shall not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them; 36but you shall fear Yahweh, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and with an outstretched arm, and you shall bow yourselves to him, and you shall sacrifice to him. 37The statutes and the ordinances, and the law and the commandment, which he wrote for you, you shall observe to do forever more. You shall not fear other gods. 38You shall not forget the covenant that I have made with you; neither shall you fear other gods. 39But you shall fear Yahweh your God; and he will deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.” 40However they did not listen, but they did what they did before. 41So these nations feared Yahweh, and served their engraved images. Their children likewise, and their children’s children, as their fathers did, so they do to this day.

zo besloot hem de koning van Assyrie, en bond hem in het gevangenhuis. 5Want de koning van Assyrie toog op in het ganse land; ja, hij kwam op naar Samaria, en hij belegerde haar drie jaren. 6In het negende jaar van Hosea, nam de koning van Assyrie Samaria in, en voerde Israel weg in Assyrie, en deed ze wonen in Halah, en in Habor, aan de rivier Gozan, en in de steden der Meden. 7Want het was geschied, dat de kinderen Israels gezondigd hadden tegen den HEERE, hun God, Die hen uit Egypteland opgebracht had, van onder de hand van Farao, den koning van Egypte; en zij hadden kwade dingen gedaan, om den HEERE tot toorn te verwekken. 12En zij hadden de drekgoden gediend, waarvan de HEERE tot hen gezegd had: Gij zult deze zaak niet doen. 13Als nu de HEERE tegen Israel en tegen Juda, door den dienst van alle profeten, van alle zieners, betuigd had, zeggende: Bekeert u van uw boze wegen en houdt Mijn geboden, en Mijn inzettingen, naar al de wet, die Ik uw vaderen geboden heb, en die Ik tot u door de hand van Mijn knechten, de profeten, gezonden heb; 14Zo hoorden zij niet, maar zij verhardden hun nek, gelijk de nek hunner vaderen geweest was, die aan den HEERE, hun God, niet geloofd hadden. 15Daartoe verwierpen zij Zijn inzettingen, en Zijn verbond, dat Hij met hun vaderen gemaakt had, en Zijn getuigenissen, die Hij tegen hen betuigd had, en wandelden de ijdelheid na, dat zij ijdel werden, en achter de heidenen, die rondom hen waren, van dewelke de HEERE hun geboden had, dat zij niet zouden doen gelijk die. 16Ja, zij verlieten al de geboden des HEEREN, huns Gods, en maakten zich gegoten beelden, twee kalveren; en maakten bossen, en bogen zich voor alle heir des hemels, en dienden Baal. 17Ook deden zij hun zonen en hun dochteren door het vuur gaan, en gebruikten waarzeggerijen, en gaven op vogelgeschrei acht, en verkochten zich, om te doen dat kwaad was in de ogen des HEEREN, om Hem tot toorn te verwekken. 18Daarom vertoornde zich de HEERE zeer over Israel, dat Hij hen wegdeed van Zijn aangezicht; er bleef niets over, behalve de stam van Juda alleen. 19Zelfs hield Juda de geboden des HEEREN, huns Gods, niet; maar zij wandelden in de inzettingen van Israel, die zij gemaakt hadden. 20Zo verwierp de HEERE het ganse zaad van Israel, en bedrukte hen, en gaf ze in de hand der rovers, totdat Hij hen van Zijn aangezicht weggeworpen had. 21Want Hij scheurde Israel van het huis van David af, en zij maakten Jerobeam, den zoon van Nebat, koning; en Jerobeam dreef Israel af van achter den HEERE, en hij deed ze een grote zonde zondigen. 22Alzo wandelden de kinderen Israels in alle zonden van Jerobeam die hij gedaan had; zij weken daarvan niet af; 23Totdat de HEERE Israel van Zijn aangezicht wegdeed, gelijk als Hij gesproken had door den dienst van al Zijn knechten, de profeten; alzo werd Israel weggevoerd uit zijn land naar Assyrie, tot op dezen dag. 24De koning nu van Assyrie bracht volk van Babel, en van Chuta, en van Avva, en van Hamath, en Sefarvaim, en deed hen wonen in de steden van Samaria, in de plaats der kinderen Israels; en zij namen Samaria erfelijk in, en woonden in haar steden. 25En het geschiedde in het begin hunner woning aldaar, dat zij den HEERE niet vreesden; zo zond de HEERE leeuwen onder hen, die enigen van hen doodden. 26Daarom spraken zij tot den koning van Assyrie, zeggende: De volken, die gij vervoerd hebt, en hebt doen wonen in de steden van Samaria, weten de wijze des Gods van het land niet; daarom heeft Hij leeuwen onder hen gezonden, en ziet, zij doden hen, dewijl zij niet weten de wijze des Gods van het land. 27Toen gebood de koning van Assyrie, zeggende: Brengt een der priesteren daarheen, die gijlieden van daar weggevoerd hebt, dat zij henentrekken, en wonen aldaar; en dat hij hun lere de wijze des Gods van het land. 28Zo kwam een uit de priesteren, die zij van Samaria weggevoerd hadden, en woonde te Beth-El; en hij leerde hun, hoe zij den HEERE vrezen zouden. 29Maar elk volk maakte zijn goden; zij vrezen den HEERE niet, en zij doen niet naar hun inzettingen, en naar hun rechten, en naar de wet, en naar het gebod, dat de HEERE geboden heeft aan de kinderen van Jakob, dien Hij den naam Israel gaf. 35Nochtans had de HEERE een verbond met hen gemaakt, en had hun geboden, zeggende: Gij zult geen andere goden vrezen, noch u voor hen nederbuigen, noch hen dienen, noch hun offerande doen. 36Maar den HEERE, Die u uit Egypteland met grote kracht en met een uitgestrekten arm opgevoerd heeft, Dien zult gij vrezen, en voor Hem zult gij u buigen, en Hem zult gij offerande doen; 37En de inzettingen, en de rechten, en de wet, en het gebod, die Hij u geschreven heeft, zult gij waarnemen te doen te allen dag; en gij zult andere goden niet vrezen. 38En het verbond, dat Ik met u gemaakt heb, zult gij niet vergeten; en gij zult andere goden niet vrezen. 39Maar den HEERE, uw God, zult gij vrezen; en Hij zal u redden uit de hand van al uw vijanden. 40Doch zij hoorden niet, maar zij deden naar hun eerste wijze. 41Maar deze volken vreesden den HEERE, en dienden hun gesneden beelden; ook doen hun kinderen en hun kindskinderen, gelijk als hun vaders gedaan hebben, tot op dezen dag.
