1Josias avait huit ans lorsqu’il devint roi, et il régna trente et un ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s’appelait Jedida, fille d’Adaja, de Botskath. 2Il fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de l’Éternel, et il marcha dans toute la voie de David, son père ; il ne s’en détourna ni à droite ni à gauche. 3La dix-huitième année du roi Josias, le roi envoya dans la maison de l’Éternel Schaphan, le secrétaire, fils d’Atsalia, fils de Meschullam. 4Il lui dit : Monte vers Hilkija, le souverain sacrificateur, et qu’il amasse l’argent qui a été apporté dans la maison de l’Éternel et que ceux qui ont la garde du seuil ont recueilli du peuple. 5On remettra cet argent entre les mains de ceux qui sont chargés de faire exécuter l’ouvrage dans la maison de l’Éternel. Et ils l’emploieront pour ceux qui travaillent aux réparations de la maison de l’Éternel, 6pour les charpentiers, les manœuvres et les maçons, pour les achats de bois et de pierres de taille nécessaires aux réparations de la maison. 7Mais on ne leur demandera pas de compte pour l’argent remis entre leurs mains, car ils agissent avec probité. 8Alors Hilkija, le souverain sacrificateur, dit à Schaphan, le secrétaire : J’ai trouvé le livre de la loi dans la maison de l’Éternel. Et Hilkija donna le livre à Schaphan, et Schaphan le lut. 9Puis Schaphan, le secrétaire, alla rendre compte au roi, et dit : Tes serviteurs ont amassé l’argent qui se trouvait dans la maison, et l’ont remis entre les mains de ceux qui sont chargés de faire exécuter l’ouvrage dans la maison de l’Éternel. 10Schaphan, le secrétaire, dit encore au roi : Le sacrificateur Hilkija m’a donné un livre. Et Schaphan le lut devant le roi. 11Lorsque le roi entendit les paroles du livre de la loi, il déchira ses vêtements. 12Et le roi donna cet ordre au sacrificateur Hilkija, à Achikam, fils de Schaphan, à Acbor, fils de Michée, à Schaphan, le secrétaire, et à Asaja, serviteur du roi : 13Allez, consultez l’Éternel pour moi, pour le peuple, et pour tout Juda, au sujet des paroles de ce livre qu’on a trouvé ; car grande est la colère de l’Éternel, qui s’est enflammée contre nous, parce que nos pères n’ont point obéi aux paroles de ce livre et n’ont point mis en pratique tout ce qui nous y est prescrit. 14Le sacrificateur Hilkija, Achikam, Acbor, Schaphan et Asaja, allèrent auprès de la prophétesse Hulda, femme de Schallum, fils de Thikva, fils de Harhas, gardien des vêtements. Elle habitait à Jérusalem, dans l’autre quartier de la ville. 15Après qu’ils lui eurent parlé, elle leur dit : Ainsi parle l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël : Dites à l’homme qui vous a envoyés vers moi : 16Ainsi parle l’Éternel : Voici, je vais faire venir des malheurs sur ce lieu et sur ses habitants, selon toutes les paroles du livre qu’a lu le roi de Juda. 17Parce qu’ils m’ont abandonné et qu’ils ont offert des parfums à d’autres dieux, afin de m’irriter par tous les ouvrages de leurs mains, ma colère s’est enflammée contre ce lieu, et elle ne s’éteindra point. 18Mais vous direz au roi de Juda, qui vous a envoyés pour consulter l’Éternel : Ainsi parle l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël, au sujet des paroles que tu as entendues : 19Parce que ton cœur a été touché, parce que tu t’es humilié devant l’Éternel en entendant ce que j’ai prononcé contre ce lieu et contre ses habitants, qui seront un objet d’épouvante et de malédiction, et parce que tu as déchiré tes vêtements et que tu as pleuré devant moi, moi aussi, j’ai entendu, dit l’Éternel. 20C’est pourquoi, voici, je te recueillerai auprès de tes pères, tu seras recueilli en paix dans ton sépulcre, et tes yeux ne verront pas tous les malheurs que je ferai venir sur ce lieu. Ils rapportèrent au roi cette réponse.
1Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath. 2He did that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh, and walked in all the way of David his father, and didn’t turn aside to the right hand or to the left. 3In the eighteenth year of king Josiah, the king sent Shaphan, the son of Azaliah the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to Yahweh’s house, saying, 4“Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may sum the money which is brought into Yahweh’s house, which the keepers of the threshold have gathered of the people. 5Let them deliver it into the hand of the workmen who have the oversight of Yahweh’s house; and let them give it to the workmen who are in Yahweh’s house, to repair the breaches of the house, 6to the carpenters, and to the builders, and to the masons, and for buying timber and cut stone to repair the house. 7However there was no accounting made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand; for they dealt faithfully.” 8Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the book of the law in Yahweh’s house.” Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan, and he read it. 9Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, “Your servants have emptied out the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of the workmen who have the oversight of Yahweh’s house.” 10Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has delivered a book to me.” Shaphan read it before the king. 11When the king had heard the words of the book of the law, he tore his clothes. 12The king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Micaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying, 13“Go inquire of Yahweh for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found; for great is the wrath of Yahweh that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not listened to the words of this book, to do according to all that which is written concerning us.” 14So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asaiah, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (now she lived in Jerusalem in the second quarter); and they talked with her. 15She said to them, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: ‘Tell the man who sent you to me, 16“Thus says Yahweh, ‘Behold, I will bring evil on this place, and on its inhabitants, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah has read. 17Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and it shall not be quenched.’” 18But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Yahweh, thus you shall tell him, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: ‘Concerning the words which you have heard, 19because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before Yahweh, when you heard what I spoke against this place, and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and have torn your clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard you,’ says Yahweh. 20‘Therefore behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, neither shall your eyes see all the evil which I will bring on this place.’”’” They brought back this message to the king.
1Josia was acht jaren oud, toen hij koning werd, en regeerde een en dertig jaren te Jeruzalem; en de naam zijner moeder was Jedida, een dochter van Adaja, van Bozkath. 2En hij deed dat recht was in de ogen des HEEREN; en hij wandelde in al den weg van zijn vader David, en week niet af ter rechterhand noch ter linkerhand. 3Het geschiedde nu in het achttiende jaar van den koning Josia, dat de koning den schrijver Safan, den zoon van Azalia, den zoon van Mesullam, zond in het huis des HEEREN, zeggende: 4Ga op tot Hilkia, den hogepriester, opdat hij het geld opsomme, dat in het huis des HEEREN gebracht is, hetwelk de wachters des dorpels van het volk verzameld hebben; 5En dat zij dat geven in de hand der verzorgers van het werk, die besteld zijn over het huis des HEEREN; opdat zij het geven aan degenen, die het werk doen, dat in het huis des HEEREN is, om de breuken van het huis te beteren; 6Aan de timmerlieden en de bouwlieden, en de metselaars, en om hout en gehouwene stenen te kopen, om het huis te beteren. 7Doch er werd met hen geen rekening gehouden van het geld, dat in hun hand geleverd was, want zij handelden trouwelijk. 8Toen zeide de hogepriester Hilkia tot Safan, den schrijver: Ik heb het wetboek in het huis des HEEREN gevonden; en Hilkia gaf dat boek aan Safan, die las het. 9Daarna kwam Safan, de schrijver, tot den koning, en bracht den koning bescheid weder, en hij zeide: Uw knechten hebben het geld, dat in het huis gevonden was, samengebracht, en hebben het gegeven in de hand der verzorgers van het werk, die besteld waren over het huis des HEEREN. 10Ook gaf Safan, de schrijver, den koning te kennen, zeggende: De priester Hilkia heeft mij een boek gegeven. En Safan las dat voor het aangezicht des konings. 11Het geschiedde nu, als de koning de woorden des wetboeks hoorde, dat hij zijn klederen scheurde. 12En de koning gebood Hilkia, den priester, en Ahikam, den zoon van Safan, en Achbor, den zoon van Michaja, en Safan, den schrijver, en Asaja, den knecht des konings, zeggende: 13Gaat henen, vraagt den HEERE voor mij, en voor het volk, en voor het ganse Juda, over de woorden dezes boeks, dat gevonden is; want de grimmigheid des HEEREN is groot, dewelke tegen ons aangestoken is, omdat onze vaderen niet gehoord hebben naar de woorden dezes boeks, om te doen naar al wat voor ons geschreven is. 14Toen ging de priester Hilkia, en Ahikam, en Achbor, en Safan, en Asaja henen tot de profetes Hulda, de huisvrouw van Sallum, den zoon van Tikva, den zoon van Harhas, den klederbewaarder (zij nu woonde te Jeruzalem, in het tweede deel), en zij spraken tot haar. 15En zij zeide tot hen: Zo zegt de HEERE, de God Israels: Zegt tot den man, die u tot mij gezonden heeft: 16Zo zegt de HEERE: Zie, Ik zal kwaad over deze plaats brengen, en voer haar inwoners, namelijk al de woorden des boeks, dat de koning van Juda gelezen heeft. 17Daarom dat zij Mij verlaten, en anderen goden gerookt hebben, opdat zij Mij tot toorn verwekten met al het werk hunner handen, zo zal Mijn grimmigheid aangestoken worden, tegen deze plaats, en niet uitgeblust worden. 18Maar tot den koning van Juda, die u gezonden heeft, om den HEERE te vragen, alzo zult gij tot hem zeggen: Zo zegt de HEERE, de God Israels: Aangaande de woorden, die gij gehoord hebt; 19Omdat uw hart week geworden is, en gij u voor het aangezicht des HEEREN vernederd hebt, als gij hoordet, wat Ik gesproken heb tegen deze plaats en derzelver inwoners, dat zij tot een verwoesting en vloek zullen worden, en dat gij uw klederen gescheurd en voor Mijn aangezicht geweend hebt; zo heb Ik u ook verhoord, spreekt de HEERE. 20Daarom zie, Ik zal u verzamelen tot uw vaderen, en gij zult met vrede in uw graf verzameld worden, en uw ogen zullen al het kwaad niet zien, dat Ik over deze plaats brengen zal. En zij brachten den koning het antwoord weder.
