1Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, rassembla toute son armée ; il avait avec lui trente-deux rois, des chevaux et des chars. Il monta, mit le siège devant Samarie et l’attaqua. 2Il envoya dans la ville des messagers à Achab, roi d’Israël, 3et lui fit dire : Ainsi parle Ben-Hadad : Ton argent et ton or sont à moi, tes femmes et tes plus beaux enfants sont à moi. 4Le roi d’Israël répondit : Roi, mon seigneur, comme tu le dis, je suis à toi avec tout ce que j’ai. 5Les messagers retournèrent, et dirent : Ainsi parle Ben-Hadad : Je t’ai fait dire : Tu me livreras ton argent et ton or, tes femmes et tes enfants. 6J’enverrai donc demain, à cette heure, mes serviteurs chez toi ; ils fouilleront ta maison et les maisons de tes serviteurs, ils mettront la main sur tout ce que tu as de précieux, et ils l’emporteront. 7Le roi d’Israël appela tous les anciens du pays, et il dit : Sentez bien et comprenez que cet homme nous veut du mal ; car il m’a envoyé demander mes femmes et mes enfants, mon argent et mon or, et je ne lui avais pas refusé ! 8Tous les anciens et tout le peuple dirent à Achab : Ne l’écoute pas et ne consens pas. 9Et il dit aux messagers de Ben-Hadad : Dites à mon seigneur le roi : Je ferai tout ce que tu as envoyé demander à ton serviteur la première fois ; mais pour cette chose, je ne puis pas la faire. Les messagers s’en allèrent, et lui portèrent la réponse. 10Ben-Hadad envoya dire à Achab : Que les dieux me traitent dans toute leur rigueur, si la poussière de Samarie suffit pour remplir le creux de la main de tout le peuple qui me suit ! 11Et le roi d’Israël répondit : Que celui qui revêt une armure ne se glorifie pas comme celui qui la dépose ! 12Lorsque Ben-Hadad reçut cette réponse, il était à boire avec les rois sous les tentes, et il dit à ses serviteurs : Faites vos préparatifs ! Et ils firent leurs préparatifs contre la ville. 13Mais voici, un prophète s’approcha d’Achab, roi d’Israël, et il dit : Ainsi parle l’Éternel : Vois-tu toute cette grande multitude ? Je vais la livrer aujourd’hui entre tes mains, et tu sauras que je suis l’Éternel. 14Achab dit : Par qui ? Et il répondit : Ainsi parle l’Éternel : Par les serviteurs des chefs des provinces. Achab dit : Qui engagera le combat ? Et il répondit : Toi. 15Alors Achab passa en revue les serviteurs des chefs des provinces, et il s’en trouva deux cent trente-deux ; et après eux, il passa en revue tout le peuple, tous les enfants d’Israël, et ils étaient sept mille. 16Ils firent une sortie à midi. Ben-Hadad buvait et s’enivrait sous les tentes avec les trente-deux rois, ses auxiliaires. 17Les serviteurs des chefs des provinces sortirent les premiers. Ben-Hadad s’informa, et on lui fit ce rapport : Des hommes sont sortis de Samarie. 18Il dit : S’ils sortent pour la paix, saisissez-les vivants ; et s’ils sortent pour le combat, saisissez-les vivants. 19Lorsque les serviteurs des chefs des provinces et l’armée qui les suivait furent sortis de la ville, 20chacun frappa son homme, et les Syriens prirent la fuite. Israël les poursuivit. Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, se sauva sur un cheval, avec des cavaliers. 21Le roi d’Israël sortit, frappa les chevaux et les chars, et fit éprouver aux Syriens une grande défaite. 22Alors le prophète s’approcha du roi d’Israël, et lui dit : Va, fortifie toi, examine et vois ce que tu as à faire ; car, au retour de l’année, le roi de Syrie montera contre toi. 23Les serviteurs du roi de Syrie lui dirent : Leur dieu est un dieu de montagnes ; c’est pourquoi ils ont été plus forts que nous. Mais combattons-les dans la plaine, et l’on verra si nous ne serons pas plus forts qu’eux. 24Fais encore ceci : ôte chacun des rois de son poste, et remplace-les par des chefs ; 25et forme-toi une armée pareille à celle que tu as perdue, avec autant de chevaux et autant de chars. Puis nous les combattrons dans la plaine, et l’on verra si nous ne serons pas plus forts qu’eux. Il les écouta, et fit ainsi. 26L’année suivante, Ben-Hadad passa les Syriens en revue, et monta vers Aphek pour combattre Israël. 27Les enfants d’Israël furent aussi passés en revue ; ils reçurent des vivres, et ils marchèrent à la rencontre des Syriens. Ils campèrent vis-à-vis d’eux, semblables à deux petits troupeaux de chèvres, tandis que les Syriens remplissaient le pays. 28L’homme de Dieu s’approcha, et dit au roi d’Israël : Ainsi parle l’Éternel : Parce que les Syriens ont dit : L’Éternel est un dieu des montagnes et non un dieu des vallées, je livrerai toute cette grande multitude entre tes mains, et vous saurez que je suis l’Éternel. 29Ils campèrent sept jours en face les uns des autres. Le septième jour, le combat s’engagea, et les enfants d’Israël tuèrent aux Syriens cent mille hommes de pied en un jour. 30Le reste s’enfuit à la ville d’Aphek, et la muraille tomba sur vingt-sept mille hommes qui restaient. Ben-Hadad s’était réfugié dans la ville, où il allait de chambre en chambre. 31Ses serviteurs lui dirent : Voici, nous avons appris que les rois de la maison d’Israël sont des rois miséricordieux ; nous allons mettre des sacs sur nos reins et des cordes à nos têtes, et nous sortirons vers le roi d’Israël : peut-être qu’il te laissera la vie. 32Ils se mirent des sacs autour des reins et des cordes autour de la tête, et ils allèrent auprès du roi d’Israël. Ils dirent : Ton serviteur Ben-Hadad dit : Laisse-moi la vie ! Achab répondit : Est-il encore vivant ? Il est mon frère. 33Ces hommes tirèrent de là un bon augure, et ils se hâtèrent de le prendre au mot et de dire : Ben-Hadad est ton frère ! Et il dit : Allez, amenez-le. Ben-Hadad vint vers lui, et Achab le fit monter sur son char. 34Ben-Hadad lui dit : Je te rendrai les villes que mon père a prises à ton père ; et tu établiras pour toi des rues à Damas, comme mon père en avait établi à Samarie. Et moi, reprit Achab, je te laisserai aller, en faisant une alliance. Il fit alliance avec lui, et le laissa aller. 35L’un des fils des prophètes dit à son compagnon, d’après l’ordre de l’Éternel : Frappe-moi, je te prie ! Mais cet homme refusa de le frapper. 36Alors il lui dit : Parce que tu n’as pas obéi à la voix de l’Éternel, voici, quand tu m’auras quitté, le lion te frappera. Et quand il l’eut quitté, le lion le rencontra et le frappa. 37Il trouva un autre homme, et il dit : Frappe-moi, je te prie ! Cet homme le frappa et le blessa. 38Le prophète alla se placer sur le chemin du roi, et il se déguisa avec un bandeau sur les yeux. 39Lorsque le roi passa, il cria vers lui, et dit : Ton serviteur était au milieu du combat ; et voici, un homme s’approche et m’amène un homme, en disant : Garde cet homme ; s’il vient à manquer, ta vie répondra de sa vie, ou tu paieras un talent d’argent ! 40Et pendant que ton serviteur agissait çà et là, l’homme a disparu. Le roi d’Israël lui dit : C’est là ton jugement ; tu l’as prononcé toi-même. 41Aussitôt le prophète ôta le bandeau de dessus ses yeux, et le roi d’Israël le reconnut pour l’un des prophètes. 42Il dit alors au roi : Ainsi parle l’Éternel : Parce que tu as laissé échapper de tes mains l’homme que j’avais dévoué par interdit, ta vie répondra de sa vie, et ton peuple de son peuple. 43Le roi d’Israël s’en alla chez lui, triste et irrité, et il arriva à Samarie.
1Ben Hadad the king of Syria gathered all his army together; and there were thirty-two kings with him, and horses and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and fought against it. 2He sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel, into the city, and said to him, “Thus says Ben Hadad, 3‘Your silver and your gold is mine. Your wives also and your children, even the best, are mine.’” 4The king of Israel answered, “It is according to your saying, my lord, O king. I am yours, and all that I have.” 5The messengers came again, and said, “Ben Hadad says, ‘I sent indeed to you, saying, “You shall deliver me your silver, and your gold, and your wives, and your children; 6but I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they shall search your house, and the houses of your servants; and it shall be, that whatever is pleasant in your eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.”’” 7Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, “Please notice how this man seeks mischief; for he sent to me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I didn’t deny him.” 8All the elders and all the people said to him, “Don’t listen, neither consent.” 9Therefore he said to the messengers of Ben Hadad, “Tell my lord the king, ‘All that you sent for to your servant at the first I will do; but this thing I cannot do.’” The messengers departed, and brought him back the message. 10Ben Hadad sent to him, and said, “The gods do so to me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people who follow me.” 11The king of Israel answered, “Tell him, ‘Don’t let him who puts on his armor brag like he who takes it off.’” 12When Ben Hadad heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings, in the pavilions, he said to his servants, “Prepare to attack!” They prepared to attack the city. 13Behold, a prophet came near to Ahab king of Israel, and said, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, I will deliver it into your hand this day; and you shall know that I am Yahweh.’” 14Ahab said, “By whom?” He said, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘By the young men of the princes of the provinces.’” Then he said, “Who shall begin the battle?” He answered, “You.” 15Then he mustered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty-two. After them, he mustered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand. 16They went out at noon. But Ben Hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty-two kings who helped him. 17The young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben Hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, “Men are coming out from Samaria.” 18He said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive; or if they have come out for war, take them alive.” 19So these went out of the city, the young men of the princes of the provinces, and the army which followed them. 20They each killed his man. The Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them. Ben Hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with horsemen. 21The king of Israel went out, and struck the horses and chariots, and killed the Syrians with a great slaughter. 22The prophet came near to the king of Israel, and said to him, “Go, strengthen yourself, and mark, and see what you do; for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against you.” 23The servants of the king of Syria said to him, “Their god is a god of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we. But let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. 24Do this thing: take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their place. 25Muster an army, like the army that you have lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot. We will fight against them in the plain, and surely we will be stronger than them.” He listened to their voice, and did so. 26At the return of the year, Ben Hadad mustered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel. 27The children of Israel were mustered, and were provisioned, and went against them. The children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of young goats; but the Syrians filled the country. 28A man of God came near and spoke to the king of Israel, and said, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Because the Syrians have said, “Yahweh is a god of the hills, but he is not a god of the valleys”; therefore I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am Yahweh.’” 29They encamped one over against the other seven days. So it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel killed one hundred thousand footmen of the Syrians in one day. 30But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and the wall fell on twenty-seven thousand men who were left. Ben Hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner room. 31His servants said to him, “See now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Please let us put sackcloth on our bodies, and ropes on our heads, and go out to the king of Israel. Maybe he will save your life.” 32So they put sackcloth on their bodies and ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, “Your servant Ben Hadad says, ‘Please let me live.’” He said, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.” 33Now the men observed diligently, and hurried to take this phrase; and they said, “Your brother Ben Hadad.” Then he said, “Go, bring him.” Then Ben Hadad came out to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot. 34Ben Hadad said to him, “The cities which my father took from your father I will restore. You shall make streets for yourself in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria.” “I”, said Ahab, “will let you go with this covenant.” So he made a covenant with him, and let him go. 35A certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his fellow by Yahweh’s word, “Please strike me!” The man refused to strike him. 36Then he said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of Yahweh, behold, as soon as you are departed from me, a lion shall kill you.” As soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and killed him. 37Then he found another man, and said, “Please strike me.” The man struck him, smiting and wounding him. 38So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with his headband over his eyes. 39As the king passed by, he cried to the king; and he said, “Your servant went out into the midst of the battle; and behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man to me, and said, ‘Guard this man! If by any means he be missing, then your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’ 40As your servant was busy here and there, he was gone.” The king of Israel said to him, “So your judgment shall be; you yourself have decided it.” 41He hurried, and took the headband away from his eyes; and the king of Israel recognized that he was of the prophets. 42He said to him, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Because you have let go out of your hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore your life shall go for his life, and your people for his people.’” 43The king of Israel went to his house sullen and angry, and came to Samaria.
1En Benhadad, de koning van Syrie, vergaderde al zijn macht; en twee en dertig koningen waren met hem, en paarden en wagenen; en hij toog op, en belegerde Samaria en krijgde tegen haar. 2En hij zond boden tot Achab, den koning van Israel, in de stad. 3En hij zeide hem aan: Zo zegt Benhadad: Uw zilver en uw goud, dat is mijn, daartoe uw vrouwen en uw beste kinderen, die zijn mijn. 4En de koning van Israel antwoordde en zeide: Naar uw woord, mijn heer de koning, ik ben uwe, en al wat ik heb. 5Daarna kwamen de boden weder, en zeiden: Alzo spreekt Benhadad, zeggende: Ik heb wel tot u gezonden, zeggende: Uw zilver, en uw goud, en uw vrouwen, en uw kinderen zult gij mij geven; 6Maar morgen om dezen tijd zal ik mijn knechten tot u zenden, dat zij uw huis en de huizen uwer knechten bezoeken; en het zal geschieden, dat zij al het begeerlijke uwer ogen in hun handen leggen en wegnemen zullen. 7Toen riep de koning van Israel alle oudsten des lands, en zeide: Merkt toch en ziet, dat deze het kwade zoekt; want hij had tot mij gezonden, om mijn vrouwen, en om mijn kinderen, en om mijn zilver, en om mijn goud, en ik heb het hem niet geweigerd. 8Doch al de oudsten, en het ganse volk, zeiden tot hem: Hoor niet, en bewillig niet. 9Daarom zeide hij tot de boden van Benhadad: Zegt mijn heer den koning: Alles, waarom gij in het eerst tot uw knecht gezonden hebt, zal ik doen; maar deze zaak kan ik niet doen. Zo gingen de boden heen en brachten hem bescheid weder. 10En Benhadad zond tot hem en zeide: De goden doen mij zo, en doen zo daartoe, indien het stof van Samaria genoeg zal zijn tot handvollen voor al het volk, dat mijn voetstappen volgt! 11Maar de koning van Israel antwoordde en zeide: Spreekt tot hem: Die zich aangordt, beroeme zich niet, als die zich los maakt. 12En het geschiedde, als hij dit woord hoorde, daar hij was drinkende, hij en de koningen in de tenten, dat hij zeide tot zijn knechten: Legt aan! En zij legden aan tegen de stad. 13En ziet, een profeet trad tot Achab, den koning van Israel, en zeide: Zo zegt de HEERE: Hebt gij gezien al deze grote menigte? Zie, Ik zal ze heden in uw hand geven, opdat gij weet, dat Ik de HEERE ben. 14En Achab zeide: Door wie? En hij zeide: Zo zegt de HEERE: Door de jongens van de oversten der landschappen. En hij zeide: Wie zal den strijd aanbinden? En hij zeide: Gij. 15Toen telde hij de jongens van de oversten der landschappen, en zij waren tweehonderd twee en dertig; en na hen telde hij al het volk, al de kinderen Israels, zeven duizend. 16En zij togen uit op den middag. Benhadad nu dronk zich dronken in de tenten, hij en de koningen, de twee en dertig koningen, die hem hielpen. 17En de jongens van de oversten der landschappen togen eerst uit. Doch Benhadad zond enigen uit, en zij boodschapten hem, zeggende: Uit Samaria zijn mannen uitgetogen. 18En hij zeide: Hetzij dat zij tot vrede uitgetogen zijn, grijpt hen levend; hetzij ook, dat zij ten strijde uitgetogen zijn, grijpt hen levend. 19Zo togen deze jongens van de oversten der landschappen uit de stad, en het heir, dat hen navolgde. 20En een ieder sloeg zijn man, zodat de Syriers vloden, en Israel jaagde hen na. Doch Benhadad, de koning van Syrie, ontkwam op een paard, met enige ruiteren. 21En de koning van Israel toog uit, en sloeg paarden en wagenen, dat hij een groten slag aan de Syriers sloeg. 22Toen trad die profeet tot den koning van Israel, en zeide tot hem: Ga heen, sterk u; en bemerk, en zie, wat gij doen zult; want met de wederkomst des jaars zal de koning van Syrie tegen u optrekken. 23Want de knechten van den koning van Syrie hadden tot hem gezegd: Hun goden zijn berggoden, daarom zijn zij sterker geweest dan wij; maar zeker, laat ons tegen hen op het effen veld strijden, zo wij niet sterker zijn dan zij! 24Daarom doe deze zaak: Doe de koningen weg, elkeen uit zijn plaats, en stel landvoogden in hun plaats. 25En gij, tel u een heir, als dat heir, dat van de uwen gevallen is, en paarden, als die paarden, en wagenen, als die wagenen; en laat ons tegen hen op het effen veld strijden, zo wij niet sterker zijn dan zij! En hij hoorde naar hun stem, en deed alzo. 26Het geschiedde nu met de wederkomst des jaars, dat Benhadad de Syriers monsterde; en hij toog op naar Afek, ten krijge tegen Israel. 27De kinderen Israels werden ook gemonsterd, en waren verzorgd van leeftocht, en trokken hun tegemoet; en de kinderen Israels legerden zich tegenover hen, als twee blote geitenkudden, maar de Syriers vervulden het land. 28En de man Gods trad toe, en sprak tot den koning van Israel, en zeide: Zo zegt de HEERE: Daarom dat de Syriers gezegd hebben: De HEERE is een God der bergen, en Hij is niet een God der laagten; zo zal Ik al deze grote menigte in uw hand geven, opdat gijlieden weet, dat Ik de HEERE ben. 29En dezen waren gelegerd tegenover die, zeven dagen; het geschiedde nu op den zevenden dag, dat de strijd aanging; en de kinderen Israels sloegen van de Syriers honderd duizend voetvolks op een dag. 30En de overgeblevenen vloden naar Afek in de stad, en de muur viel op zeven en twintig duizend mannen, die overgebleven waren; ook vlood Benhadad, en kwam in de stad van kamer in kamer. 31Toen zeiden de knechten tot hem: Zie toch, wij hebben gehoord, dat de koningen van het huis Israels goedertierene koningen zijn; laat ons toch zakken om onze lenden leggen, en koorden om onze hoofden, en uitgaan tot den koning van Israel; mogelijk zal hij uw ziel in het leven behouden. 32Toen gordden zij zakken om hun lenden, en koorden om hun hoofden, en kwamen tot den koning van Israel, en zeiden: Uw knecht Benhadad zegt: Laat toch mijn ziel leven. En hij zeide: Leeft hij dan nog? Hij is mijn broeder. 33De mannen nu namen naarstiglijk waar, en vatten het haastelijk, of het van hem ware, en zeiden: Uw broeder Benhadad leeft. En hij zeide: Komt, brengt hem. Toen kwam Benhadad tot hem uit, en hij deed hem op den wagen klimmen. 34En hij zeide tot hem: De steden, die mijn vader van uw vader genomen heeft, zal ik wedergeven, en maak u straten in Damaskus, gelijk mijn vader in Samaria gemaakt heeft. En ik, antwoordde Achab, zal u met dit verbond dan laten gaan. Zo maakte hij een verbond met hem, en liet hem gaan. 35Toen zeide een man uit de zonen der profeten tot zijn naaste, door het woord des HEEREN: Sla mij toch. En de man weigerde hem te slaan. 36En hij zeide tot hem: Daarom dat gij de stem des HEEREN niet gehoorzaam zijt geweest, zie, als gij van mij weggegaan zijt, zo zal u een leeuw slaan. En als hij van bij hem weggegaan was, zo vond hem een leeuw, die hem sloeg. 37Daarna vond hij een anderen man, en zeide: Sla mij toch. En die man sloeg hem, slaande en wondende. 38Toen ging de profeet heen, en stond voor den koning op den weg; en hij verstelde zich met as boven zijn ogen. 39En het geschiedde, als de koning voorbijging, dat hij tot den koning riep, en zeide: Uw knecht was uitgegaan in het midden des strijds; en zie, een man was afgeweken, en bracht tot mij een man, en zeide: Bewaar dezen man, indien hij enigszins gemist wordt, zo zal uw ziel in de plaats zijner ziel zijn, of gij zult een talent zilvers opwegen. 40Het geschiedde nu, als uw knecht hier en daar doende was, dat hij er niet was. Toen zeide de koning van Israel tot hem: Zo is uw oordeel; gij hebt zelf het geveld. 41Toen haastte hij zich, en deed de as af van zijn ogen; en de koning van Israel kende hem, dat hij een der profeten was. 42En hij zeide tot hem: Zo zegt de HEERE: Omdat gij den man, dien Ik verbannen heb, uit de hand hebt laten gaan, zo zal uw ziel in de plaats van zijn ziel zijn, en uw volk in de plaats van zijn volk. 43En de koning van Israel toog henen, gemelijk en toornig, naar zijn huis, en kwam te Samaria.
