1Και ήκουσαν Σεφατίας ο υιός του Ματθάν και Γεδαλίας ο υιός του Πασχώρ και Ιουχάλ ο υιός του Σελεμίου και Πασχώρ ο υιός του Μαλχίου τους λόγους, τους οποίους ο Ιερεμίας ελάλησε προς πάντα τον λαόν, λέγων, 2Ούτω λέγει Κύριος· Όστις κάθηται εν τη πόλει ταύτη, θέλει αποθάνει υπό μαχαίρας, υπό πείνης και υπό λοιμού· αλλ' όστις εξέλθη προς τους Χαλδαίους, θέλει ζήσει· και η ζωή αυτού θέλει είσθαι ως λάφυρον εις αυτόν, και θέλει ζήσει· 3ούτω λέγει Κύριος· Η πόλις αύτη θέλει εξάπαντος παραδοθή εις την χείρα του στρατεύματος του βασιλέως της Βαβυλώνος και θέλει κυριεύσει αυτήν. 4Και είπον οι άρχοντες προς τον βασιλέα, Ας θανατωθή, παρακαλούμεν, ο άνθρωπος ούτος· διότι εκλύει ούτω τας χείρας των ανδρών των πολεμιστών των εναπολειφθέντων εν τη πόλει ταύτη και τας χείρας παντός του λαού, λαλών προς αυτούς τοιούτους λόγους· διότι ο άνθρωπος ούτος δεν ζητεί το καλόν του λαού τούτου αλλά το κακόν. 5Και είπε Σεδεκίας ο βασιλεύς, Ιδού, εις την χείρα σας είναι· διότι ο βασιλεύς δεν δύναται ουδέν εναντίον σας. 6Τότε έλαβον τον Ιερεμίαν, και έρριψαν αυτόν εις τον λάκκον του Μαλχίου υιού του Αμμέλεχ τον εν τη αυλή της φυλακής, και κατεβίβασαν τον Ιερεμίαν διά σχοινίων· και εν τω λάκκω δεν ήτο ύδωρ αλλά βόρβορος, και εχώθη ο Ιερεμίας εις τον βόρβορον. 7Και ότε ήκουσεν Αβδέ-μέλεχ ο Αιθίοψ, εις των ευνούχων, ο εν τη οικία του βασιλέως, ότι έβαλον τον Ιερεμίαν εις τον λάκκον, ενώ ο βασιλεύς εκάθητο εν τη πύλη Βενιαμίν, 8εξήλθεν ο Αβδέ-μέλεχ εκ της οικίας του βασιλέως και ελάλησε προς τον βασιλέα, λέγων, 9Κύριέ μου βασιλεύ, οι άνθρωποι ούτοι έπραξαν κακά εις όσα έκαμον εις τον Ιερεμίαν τον προφήτην, τον οποίον έρριψαν εις τον λάκκον· και αυτός ήθελεν αποθάνει υπό πείνης εν τω τόπω όπου είναι, διότι δεν είναι πλέον άρτος εν τη πόλει. 10Και προσέταξεν ο βασιλεύς τον Αβδέ-μέλεχ τον Αιθίοπα, λέγων, Λάβε εντεύθεν τριάκοντα ανθρώπους μετά σου και αναβίβασον τον Ιερεμίαν τον προφήτην εκ του λάκκου, πριν αποθάνη. 11Και έλαβεν ο Αβδέ-μέλεχ τους ανθρώπους μεθ' εαυτού, και εισήλθεν εις την οικίαν του βασιλέως υπό το θησαυροφυλάκιον, και εκείθεν έλαβε παλαιά ράκη και παλαιά σεσηπότα αποφόρια και κατεβίβασεν αυτά διά σχοινίων εις τον λάκκον προς τον Ιερεμίαν. 12Και είπε προς τον Ιερεμίαν Αβδέ-μέλεχ ο Αιθίοψ, Βάλε τώρα τα παλαιά ράκη και τα σεσηπότα αποφόρια υπό τας μασχάλας σου, υποκάτω των σχοινίων. Και έκαμεν ο Ιερεμίας ούτω. 13Και έσυραν τον Ιερεμίαν διά των σχοινίων και ανεβίβασαν αυτόν εκ του λάκκου· και έμεινεν ο Ιερεμίας εν τη αυλή της φυλακής. 14Και απέστειλε Σεδεκίας ο βασιλεύς και έφερε τον Ιερεμίαν τον προφήτην προς εαυτόν, εις την τρίτην είσοδον την εν τω οίκω του Κυρίου· και είπεν ο βασιλεύς προς τον Ιερεμίαν, Θέλω να σε ερωτήσω εν πράγμα· μη κρύψης απ' εμού μηδέν. 15Και είπεν ο Ιερεμίας προς τον Σεδεκίαν, Εάν φανερώσω τούτο προς σε, δεν θέλεις τωόντι με θανατώσει; και εάν σε συμβουλεύσω, δεν θέλεις με ακούσει; 16Και ώμοσε κρυφίως Σεδεκίας ο βασιλεύς προς τον Ιερεμίαν, λέγων, Ζη Κύριος, όστις έκαμεν εις ημάς την ψυχήν ταύτην, δεν θέλω σε θανατώσει ουδέ θέλω σε δώσει εις την χείρα των ανθρώπων τούτων, οίτινες ζητούσι την ψυχήν σου. 17Και είπεν ο Ιερεμίας προς τον Σεδεκίαν, Ούτω λέγει Κύριος ο Θεός των δυνάμεων, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ· Εάν τωόντι εξέλθης προς τους άρχοντας του βασιλέως της Βαβυλώνος, τότε η ψυχή σου θέλει ζήσει και η πόλις αύτη δεν θέλει κατακαυθή εν πυρί, και θέλεις ζήσει συ και ο οίκός σου. 18αλλ' εάν δεν εξέλθης προς τους άρχοντας του βασιλέως της Βαβυλώνος, τότε η πόλις αύτη θέλει παραδοθή εις την χείρα των Χαλδαίων και θέλουσι κατακαύσει αυτήν εν πυρί και συ δεν θέλεις εκφύγει εκ της χειρός αυτών. 19Και είπε Σεδεκίας ο βασιλεύς προς τον Ιερεμίαν, Εγώ φοβούμαι τους Ιουδαίους, οίτινες κατέφυγον προς τους Χαλδαίους, μήποτε με παραδώσωσιν εις την χείρα αυτών και με εμπαίξωσι. 20Και είπεν ο Ιερεμίας, δεν θέλουσι σε παραδώσει. Υπάκουσον, παρακαλώ, εις την φωνήν του Κυρίου, την οποίαν εγώ λαλώ προς σέ· και θέλει είσθαι καλόν εις σε και η ψυχή σου θέλει ζήσει. 21Εάν όμως συ δεν εξέλθης, ούτος είναι ο λόγος, τον οποίον ο Κύριος έδειξεν εις εμέ. 22Και ιδού, πάσαι αι γυναίκες αι εναπολειφθείσαι εν τη οικία του βασιλέως του Ιούδα θέλουσιν αχθή προς τους άρχοντας του βασιλέως της Βαβυλώνος, και αύται θέλουσι λέγει, Οι άνδρες οι ειρηνικοί σου σε εδελέασαν και υπερίσχυσαν εναντίον σου· εβυθίσθησαν οι πόδες σου εις τον βόρβορον και αυτοί εσύρθησαν οπίσω· 23και πάσαι αι γυναίκές σου και τα τέκνα σου θέλουσιν αχθή προς τους Χαλδαίους· και συ δεν θέλεις εκφύγει εκ της χειρός αυτών, αλλά θέλεις πιασθή υπό της χειρός του βασιλέως της Βαβυλώνος· και θέλεις κάμει την πόλιν ταύτην να κατακαυθή εν πυρί. 24Και είπεν ο Σεδεκίας προς τον Ιερεμίαν, Ας μη μάθη μηδείς περί των λόγων τούτων και δεν θέλεις αποθάνει. 25Και εάν οι άρχοντες ακούσωσιν ότι ώμίλησα μετά σου και έλθωσι προς σε και σοι είπωσιν, Ανάγγειλον προς ημάς τώρα τι ελάλησας προς τον βασιλέα, μη κρύψης αυτό αφ' ημών και δεν θέλομεν σε θανατώσει· και τι ο βασιλεύς ελάλησε προς σέ· 26τότε θέλεις ειπεί προς αυτούς, Εγώ υπέβαλον την δέησίν μου ενώπιον του βασιλέως, διά να μη με επαναστρέψη εις την οικίαν του Ιωνάθαν, ώστε να αποθάνω εκεί. 27Ήλθον δε πάντες οι άρχοντες προς τον Ιερεμίαν και ηρώτησαν αυτόν· και ανήγγειλε προς αυτούς κατά πάντας τους λόγους εκείνους, τους οποίους προσέταξεν ο βασιλεύς. 1Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchijah, heard the words that Jeremiah spoke to all the people, saying, 2Thus says Yahweh, He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he who goes out to the Chaldeans shall live, and his life shall be to him for a prey, and he shall live. 3Thus says Yahweh, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it. 4Then the princes said to the king, “Please let this man be put to death; because he weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words to them: for this man doesn’t seek the welfare of this people, but the hurt.” 5Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand; for the king is not he who can do anything against you. 6Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchijah the king’s son, that was in the court of the guard: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. In the dungeon there was no water, but mire; and Jeremiah sank in the mire. 7Now when Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, who was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon (the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin), 8Ebedmelech went out of the king’s house, and spoke to the king, saying, 9My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is likely to die in the place where he is, because of the famine; for there is no more bread in the city. 10Then the king commanded Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from here thirty men with you, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he dies. 11So Ebedmelech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took there rags and worn-out garments, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah. 12Ebedmelech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, Put now these rags and worn-out garments under your armpits under the cords. Jeremiah did so. 13So they drew up Jeremiah with the cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard. 14Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet to him into the third entry that is in Yahweh’s house: and the king said to Jeremiah, I will ask you something. Hide nothing from me. 15Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, If I declare it to you, will you not surely put me to death? and if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me. 16So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, As Yahweh lives, who made us this soul, I will not put you to death, neither will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life. 17Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, Thus says Yahweh, the God of Armies, the God of Israel: If you will go out to the king of Babylon’s princes, then your soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and you shall live, and your house. 18But if you will not go out to the king of Babylon’s princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape out of their hand. 19Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews who are fallen away to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me. 20But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver you. Obey, I beg you, the voice of Yahweh, in that which I speak to you: so it shall be well with you, and your soul shall live. 21But if you refuse to go out, this is the word that Yahweh has shown me: 22behold, all the women who are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be brought out to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say, Your familiar friends have set you on, and have prevailed over you. Your feet are sunk in the mire, they have turned away back. 23They shall bring out all your wives and your children to the Chaldeans; and you shall not escape out of their hand, but shall be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and you shall cause this city to be burned with fire. 24Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and you shall not die. 25But if the princes hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you, and tell you, Declare to us now what you have said to the king; don’t hide it from us, and we will not put you to death; also what the king said to you: 26then you shall tell them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan’s house, to die there. 27Then came all the princes to Jeremiah, and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived. 28So Jeremiah stayed in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken.

En Jeremia deed alzo. 13En zij trokken Jeremia bij de zelen, en haalden hem op uit de kuil; en Jeremia bleef in het voorhof der bewaring. 14Toen zond de koning Zedekia henen, en liet den profeet Jeremia tot zich halen, in den derden ingang, die aan des HEEREN huis was; en de koning zeide tot Jeremia: Ik zal u een ding vragen, verheel geen ding voor mij. 15En Jeremia zeide tot Zedekia: Als ik het u verklaren zal, zult gij mij niet zekerlijk doden? En als ik u raad zal geven, gij zult toch naar mij niet horen. 16Toen zwoer de koning Zedekia aan Jeremia in het verborgene, zeggende: Zo waarachtig als de HEERE leeft, Die ons deze ziel gemaakt heeft: Indien ik u zal doden, of indien ik u zal overgeven in de hand dezer mannen, die uw ziel zoeken! 17Jeremia dan zeide tot Zedekia: Zo zegt de HEERE, de God der heirscharen, de God Israels: Indien gij gewilliglijk tot de vorsten des koning van Babel zult uitgaan, zo zal uw ziel leven, en deze stad zal niet verbrand worden met vuur; en gij zult leven, gij en uw huis. 18Maar indien gij tot de vorsten des konings van Babel niet zult uitgaan, zo zal deze stad gegeven worden in de hand der Chaldeen, en zij zullen ze met vuur verbranden; ook zult gij van hunlieder hand niet ontkomen. 19En de koning Zedekia zeide tot Jeremia: Ik ben bevreesd voor de Joden, die tot de Chaldeen gevallen zijn, dat zij mij misschien in derzelver hand overgeven, en zij den spot met mij drijven. 20En Jeremia zeide: Zij zullen u niet overgeven; wees toch gehoorzaam aan de stem des HEEREN, naar dewelke ik tot u spreek; zo zal het u welgaan, en uw ziel zal leven. 21Maar indien gij weigert uit te gaan, zo is dit het woord, dat de HEERE mij heeft doen zien; 22Ziedaar, al de vrouwen, die in het huis des konings van Juda zijn overgebleven, zullen uitgevoerd worden tot de vorsten des konings van Babel; en dezelve zullen zeggen: Uw vredegenoten hebben u aangehitst, en hebben u overmocht; uw voeten zijn in den modder gezonken; zij zijn achterwaarts gekeerd! 23Zij zullen dan al uw vrouwen en al uw zonen tot de Chaldeen uitvoeren; ook zult gij zelf van hun hand niet ontkomen; maar gij zult door de hand des konings van Babel gegrepen worden, en gij zult deze stad met vuur verbranden. 24Toen zeide Zedekia tot Jeremia: Dat niemand wete van deze woorden, zo zult gij niet sterven. 25En als de vorsten zullen horen, dat ik met u gesproken heb, en tot u komen, en tot u zeggen: Verklaar ons nu, wat hebt gij tot den koning gesproken? verheel het niet voor ons, zo zullen wij u niet doden; en wat heeft de koning tot u gesproken? 26Zo zult gij tot hen zeggen: Ik wierp mijn smeking voor des konings aangezicht neder, dat hij mij niet zou weder laten brengen in Jonathans huis, om aldaar te sterven. 27Als dan al de vorsten tot Jeremia kwamen, en hem vraagden, verklaarde hij hun, naar al deze woorden, die de koning geboden had; en zij lieten van hem af, omdat de zaak niet was gehoord. 28En Jeremia bleef in het voorhof der bewaring tot op den dag, dat Jeruzalem werd ingenomen; en hij was er nog, als Jeruzalem was ingenomen.
