1Lúc ấy, Hê-rốt là vua chư hầu, nghe tiếng đồn Ðức Chúa Jêsus, 2thì phán cùng bầy tôi rằng: Ðây là Giăng Báp-tít. Người chết đi sống lại, nhơn đó mới làm được mấy phép lạ như vậy. 3Số là, bởi cớ Hê-rô-đia, vợ Phi-líp, là em mình, nên vua Hê-rốt đã truyền bắt trói Giăng và bỏ tù. 4Vì Giăng có can vua rằng: Vua không có phép được lấy người đó làm vợ. 5Vua muốn giết Giăng, song sợ dân chúng, vì họ đều tôn Giăng là đấng tiên tri. 6Vừa đến ngày ăn mừng sanh nhựt vua Hê-rốt, con gái của Hê-rô-đia nhảy múa ở giữa người dự đám, vua lấy làm thích lắm, 7đến nỗi lấy lời thề mà hứa cho con gái ấy điều chi nàng muốn xin. 8Vậy, nàng bị mẹ xui giục, bèn tâu rằng: Xin lấy cái đầu Giăng Báp-tít để trên mâm mà cho tôi đây. 9Vua lấy làm buồn rầu; song vì đã thề lỡ rồi và có những người dự yến ở đó, nên truyền cho nàng như lời. 10Vua bèn sai người chém Giăng trong ngục, 11rồi họ để đầu người trên mâm mà đem cho con gái ấy, nàng bèn đem cho mẹ mình. 12Ðoạn, các môn đồ của Giăng đến, lấy xác mà chôn, rồi đi báo tin cho Ðức Chúa Jêsus. 13Ðức Chúa Jêsus vừa nghe tin ấy liền bỏ đó xuống thuyền, đi tẻ ra nơi đồng vắng. Khi đoàn dân biết vậy, thì từ các thành đi bộ mà theo Ngài. 14Ngài ở thuyền bước lên, thấy đoàn dân đông đúc, động lòng thương xót, mà chữa cho kẻ bịnh được lành. 15Ðến chiều tối, môn đồ tới gần Ngài mà thưa rằng: Ở đây vắng vẻ, và trời tối rồi, xin thầy cho dân chúng về, để họ đi vào các làng đặng mua đồ ăn. 16Ðức Chúa Jêsus phán rằng: Không cần họ phải đi; chính các ngươi hãy cho họ ăn. 17Môn đồ thưa rằng: Chúng tôi có đây năm cái bánh và hai con cá mà thôi. 18Ngài phán rằng: Hãy đem đây cho ta. 19Ngài bèn truyền cho chúng ngồi xuống trên cỏ, đoạn, lấy năm cái bánh và hai con cá đó, ngửa mặt lên trời mà tạ ơn; rồi bẻ bánh ra đưa cho môn đồ, môn đồ phát cho dân chúng. 20Ai nấy đều ăn no, còn bánh thừa lại thâu được đầy mười hai giỏ. 21Số người ăn ước chừng năm ngàn, không kể đờn bà con nít. 22Kế đó, Ngài liền hối môn đồ xuống thuyền, qua trước bờ bên kia, trong khi Ngài đang truyền cho dân chúng tan đi. 23Xong rồi, Ngài lên núi để cầu nguyện riêng; đến chiều tối, Ngài ở đó một mình. 24Bấy giờ, thuyền đã ra giữa biển rồi, vì gió ngược, nên bị sóng vỗ. 25Song đến canh tư đêm ấy, Ðức Chúa Jêsus đi bộ trên mặt biển mà đến cùng môn đồ. 26Khi thấy Ngài đi bộ trên mặt biển, thì môn đồ bối rối mà nói rằng: Ấy là một con ma; rồi sợ hãi mà la lên. 27Nhưng Ðức Chúa Jêsus liền phán rằng: Các ngươi hãy yên lòng; ấy là ta đây, đừng sợ! 28Phi -e-rơ bèn thưa rằng: Lạy Chúa, nếu phải Chúa, xin khiến tôi đi trên mặt nước mà đến cùng Chúa. 29Ngài phán rằng: Hãy lại đây! Phi -e-rơ ở trên thuyền bước xuống, đi bộ trên mặt nước mà đến cùng Ðức Chúa Jêsus. 30Song khi thấy gió thổi, thì Phi -e-rơ sợ hãi, hòng sụp xuống nước, bèn la lên rằng: Chúa ơn, xin cứu lấy tôi! 31Tức thì Ðức Chúa Jêsus giơ tay ra nắm lấy người, mà nói rằng: Hỡi người ít đức tin, sao ngươi hồ nghi làm vậy? 32Ngài cùng Phi -e-rơ lên thuyền rồi, thì gió yên lặng. 33Các người trong thuyền bèn đến quì lạy Ngài mà nói rằng: Thầy thật là Con Ðức Chúa Trời! 34Khi qua biển rồi, Ngài và môn đồ đến xứ Ghê-nê-xa-rết. 35Người xứ đó nhận biết Ngài, thì sai người báo tin cho khắp các miền xung quanh, và họ đem các kẻ bịnh đến cùng Ngài, 36xin chỉ cho rờ đến viền áo mà thôi; vậy ai rờ đến cũng đều được lành bịnh cả.
1At that time, Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Jesus, 2and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptizer. He is risen from the dead. That is why these powers work in him.” 3For Herod had laid hold of John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife. 4For John said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” 5When he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. 6But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced among them and pleased Herod. 7Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she should ask. 8She, being prompted by her mother, said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptizer.” 9The king was grieved, but for the sake of his oaths, and of those who sat at the table with him, he commanded it to be given, 10and he sent and beheaded John in the prison. 11His head was brought on a platter, and given to the young lady: and she brought it to her mother. 12His disciples came, and took the body, and buried it; and they went and told Jesus. 13Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat, to a deserted place apart. When the multitudes heard it, they followed him on foot from the cities. 14Jesus went out, and he saw a great multitude. He had compassion on them, and healed their sick. 15When evening had come, his disciples came to him, saying, “This place is deserted, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food.” 16But Jesus said to them, “They don’t need to go away. You give them something to eat.” 17They told him, “We only have here five loaves and two fish.” 18He said, “Bring them here to me.” 19He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave to the multitudes. 20They all ate, and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of that which remained left over from the broken pieces. 21Those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. 22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat, and to go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. 23After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone. 24But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. 25In the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea. 26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It’s a ghost!” and they cried out for fear. 27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.” 28Peter answered him and said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.” 29He said, “Come!” Peter stepped down from the boat, and walked on the waters to come to Jesus. 30But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” 31Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased. 33Those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, “You are truly the Son of God!” 34When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret. 35When the people of that place recognized him, they sent into all that surrounding region, and brought to him all who were sick, 36and they begged him that they might just touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.
1Te dierzelver tijd hoorde Herodes, de viervorst, het gerucht van Jezus; 2En zeide tot zijn knechten: Deze is Johannes de Doper; hij is opgewekt van de doden, en daarom werken die krachten in Hem. 3Want Herodes had Johannes gevangen genomen, en hem gebonden, en in den kerker gezet, om Herodias' wil, de huisvrouw van Filippus, zijn broeder. 4Want Johannes zeide tot hem: Het is u niet geoorloofd haar te hebben. 5En willende hem doden, vreesde hij het volk, omdat zij hem hielden voor een profeet. 6Maar als de dag der geboorte van Herodes gehouden werd, danste de dochter van Herodias in het midden van hen, en zij behaagde aan Herodes. 7Waarom hij haar met ede beloofde te geven, wat zij ook eisen zou. 8En zij, te voren onderricht zijnde van haar moeder, zeide: Geef mij hier in een schotel het hoofd van Johannes den Doper. 9En de koning werd bedroefd; doch om de eden, en degenen, die met hem aanzaten, gebood hij, dat het haar zou gegeven worden; 10En zond heen, en onthoofdde Johannes in den kerker. 11En zijn hoofd werd gebracht in een schotel, en het dochtertje gegeven; en zij droeg het tot haar moeder. 12En zijn discipelen kwamen, en namen het lichaam weg, en begroeven hetzelve; en gingen en boodschapten het Jezus. 13En als Jezus dit hoorde, vertrok Hij van daar te scheep, naar een woeste plaats alleen; en de scharen, dat horende, zijn Hem te voet gevolgd uit de steden. 14En Jezus uitgaande, zag een grote schare, en werd innerlijk met ontferming over hen bewogen, en genas hun kranken. 15En als het nu avond werd, kwamen Zijn discipelen tot Hem, zeggende: Deze plaats is woest, en de tijd is nu voorbijgegaan; laat de scharen van U, opdat zij heengaan in de vlekken en zichzelven spijs kopen. 16Maar Jezus zeide tot hen: Het is hun niet van node heen te gaan, geeft gij hun te eten. 17Doch zij zeiden tot Hem: Wij hebben hier niet, dan vijf broden en twee vissen. 18En Hij zeide: Brengt Mij dezelve hier. 19En Hij beval de scharen neder te zitten op het gras, en nam de vijf broden en de twee vissen, en opwaarts ziende naar den hemel, zegende dezelve; en als Hij ze gebroken had, gaf Hij de broden den discipelen, en de discipelen aan de scharen. 20En zij aten allen en werden verzadigd, en zij namen op, het overschot der brokken, twaalf volle korven. 21Die nu gegeten hadden, waren omtrent vijf duizend mannen, zonder de vrouwen en kinderen. 22En terstond dwong Jezus Zijn discipelen in het schip te gaan, en voor Hem af te varen naar de andere zijde, terwijl Hij de scharen van Zich zou laten. 23En als Hij nu de scharen van Zich gelaten had, klom Hij op den berg alleen, om te bidden. En als het nu avond was geworden, zo was Hij daar alleen. 24En het schip was nu midden in de zee, zijnde in nood van de baren; want de wind was hun tegen. 25Maar ter vierde wake des nachts kwam Jezus af tot hen, wandelende op de zee. 26En de discipelen, ziende Hem op de zee wandelen, werden ontroerd, zeggende: Het is een spooksel! En zij schreeuwden van vrees. 27Maar terstond sprak Jezus hen aan, zeggende: Zijt goedsmoeds, Ik ben het, vreest niet. 28En Petrus antwoordde Hem, en zeide: Heere! indien Gij het zijt, zo gebied mij tot U te komen op het water. 29En Hij zeide: Kom. En Petrus klom neder van het schip, en wandelde op het water, om tot Jezus te komen. 30Maar ziende den sterken wind, werd hij bevreesd, en als hij begon neder te zinken, riep hij, zeggende: Heere, behoud mij! 31En Jezus, terstond de hand uitstekende, greep hem aan, en zeide tot hem: Gij kleingelovige! waarom hebt gij gewankeld? 32En als zij in het schip geklommen waren, stilde de wind. 33Die nu in het schip waren, kwamen en aanbaden Hem, zeggende: Waarlijk, Gij zijt Gods Zoon! 34En overgevaren zijnde, kwamen zij in het land Gennesaret. 35En als de mannen van die plaats Hem werden kennende, zonden zij in dat gehele omliggende land, en brachten tot Hem allen, die kwalijk gesteld waren; 36En baden Hem, dat zij alleenlijk den zoom Zijns kleeds zouden mogen aanraken; en zovelen als Hem aanraakten, werden gezond.
