1Sau đó năm ngày, có thầy cả thượng phẩm là A-na-nia đến, với vài người trưởng lão cùng một nhà diễn thuyết kia tên là Tẹt-tu-lu, trình đơn kiện Phao-lô trước mặt quan tổng đốc. 2Phao-lô bị đòi đến rồi, Tẹt-tu-lu khởi sự cáo người như vầy: 3Bẩm quan lớn Phê-lít, nhờ ơn quan mà chúng tôi được hưởng sự bình an trọn vẹn, và nhờ sự khôn ngoan của quan đổi được mọi tình tệ để giúp dân nầy, lúc nào và nơi nào chúng tôi cũng rất cảm tạ biết ơn quan vậy. 4Nhưng muốn cho khỏi phiền quan lâu hơn, thì tôi xin quan lấy lòng khoan nhơn mà nghe một vài lời chúng tôi nói đây. 5Vậy, chúng tôi đã gặp người nầy, như là đồ ôn dịch, đã gây loạn trong hết thảy người Giu-đa trên cả thế giới: nó làm đầu phe người Na-xa-rét, 6cũng đã toan làm ô uế đền thờ, nên chúng tôi đã bắt nó và chúng tôi có muốn xử nó theo luật pháp chúng tôi. 7Nhưng quản cơ Ly-sia đến, bắt nó khỏi tay chúng tôi cách hung bạo, 8truyền lịnh cho các người kiện nó hãy đến hầu quan. Xin chính quan hãy tự tra hỏi hắn, thì sẽ biết được mọi việc chúng tôi đang kiện cáo. 9Ðến phiên các người Giu-đa cũng hùa theo lời đó, quyết rằng thật có như vậy. 10Quan tổng đốc ra dấu biểu Phao-lô nói đi, thì người thưa rằng: Tôi biết quan làm quan án trong nước nầy đã lâu năm, nên tôi dạn dĩ mà binh vực duyên cớ mình. 11Quan tra xét thì sẽ biết tôi vừa lên thành Giê-ru-sa-lem mà thờ lạy, chưa được mười hai ngày nay. 12Người ta chẳng từng gặp tôi, hoặc trong đền thờ, hoặc trong nhà hội, hoặc trong thành phố, cãi lẫy cùng ai hay xui dân làm loạn bao giờ. 13Bây giờ họ cũng chẳng biết lấy chi mà làm chứng cớ việc điều họ kiện tôi đó. 14Trước mặt quan, tôi nhận rằng theo như đạo mà họ gọi là một phe đảng, tôi thờ phượng Ðức Chúa Trời của tổ phụ tôi, tin mọi điều chép trong sách luật và các sách tiên tri; 15và tôi có sự trông cậy nầy nơi Ðức Chúa Trời, như chính họ cũng có vậy, tức là sẽ có sự sống lại của người công bình và không công bình. 16Cũng vì cớ ấy, nên tôi vẫn gắng sức cho có lương tâm không trách móc trước mặt Ðức Chúa Trời và trước mặt loài người. 17Vả, đã lâu năm nay tôi đi vắng, rồi mới về bố thí cho bổn quốc tôi và dâng của lễ. 18Ðang khi ấy, có mấy người Giu-đa quê ở cõi A-si kia gặp tôi ở trong đền thờ, được tinh sạch, chớ chẳng có dân đông hay rối loạn chi. 19Nếu họ có điều gì kiện tôi, thì có lẽ đến hầu trước mặt quan mà cáo đi. 20Hay là các người ở đây phải nói cho biết đã thấy tôi có sự gì đáng tội, lúc tôi đứng tại tòa công luận, 21hoặc có, thì cũng chỉ trách câu tôi nói giữa họ rằng: Ấy vì sự sống lại của kẻ chết mà hôm nay tôi bị xử đoán trước mặt các ông. 22Phê-lít vẫn biết rõ ràng về đạo người nói đó, nên giãn việc kiện ra, mà rằng: khi nào quan quản cơ Ly-sia xuống, ta sẽ xét việc nầy. 23Ðoạn, người truyền cho thầy đội giữ Phao-lô, nhưng phải cho người hơi được thong thả, có kẻ nào thuộc về người đến hầu việc người, thì đừng cấm. 24Qua mấy ngày sau, Phê-lít với vợ mình là Ðơ-ru-si, người Giu-đa, đến, rồi sai gọi Phao-lô, và nghe người nói về đức tin trong Ðức Chúa Jêsus Christ. 25Nhưng khi Phao-lô nói về sự công bình, sự tiết độ và sự phán xét ngày sau, thì Phê-lít run sợ, nói rằng: Bây giờ ngươi hãy lui; đợi khi nào ta rảnh, sẽ gọi lại. 26Phê-lít cũng trông Phao-lô lót bạc cho mình; nên năng đòi người đến, và nói chuyện cùng người. 27Khỏi hai năm, Bốt-tiu Phê-tu đến thay Phê-lít. Bởi cớ Phê-lít muốn làm cho dân Giu-đa bằng lòng, bèn cứ giam Phao-lô nơi ngục.
1After five days, the high priest, Ananias, came down with certain elders and an orator, one Tertullus. They informed the governor against Paul. 2When he was called, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, “Seeing that by you we enjoy much peace, and that excellent measures are coming to this nation, 3we accept it in all ways and in all places, most excellent Felix, with all thankfulness. 4But, that I don’t delay you, I entreat you to bear with us and hear a few words. 5For we have found this man to be a plague, an instigator of insurrections among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes. 6He even tried to profane the temple, and we arrested him. 8By examining him yourself you may ascertain all these things of which we accuse him.” 9The Jews also joined in the attack, affirming that these things were so. 10When the governor had beckoned to him to speak, Paul answered, “Because I know that you have been a judge of this nation for many years, I cheerfully make my defense, 11seeing that you can recognize that it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship at Jerusalem. 12In the temple they didn’t find me disputing with anyone or stirring up a crowd, either in the synagogues, or in the city. 13Nor can they prove to you the things of which they now accuse me. 14But this I confess to you, that after the Way, which they call a sect, so I serve the God of our fathers, believing all things which are according to the law, and which are written in the prophets; 15having hope toward God, which these also themselves look for, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. 16Herein I also practice always having a conscience void of offense toward God and men. 17Now after some years, I came to bring gifts for the needy to my nation, and offerings; 18amid which certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, not with a mob, nor with turmoil. 19They ought to have been here before you, and to make accusation, if they had anything against me. 20Or else let these men themselves say what injustice they found in me when I stood before the council, 21unless it is for this one thing that I cried standing among them, ‘Concerning the resurrection of the dead I am being judged before you today!’” 22But Felix, having more exact knowledge concerning the Way, deferred them, saying, “When Lysias, the commanding officer, comes down, I will decide your case.” 23He ordered the centurion that Paul should be kept in custody, and should have some privileges, and not to forbid any of his friends to serve him or to visit him. 24But after some days, Felix came with Drusilla, his wife, who was a Jewess, and sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ Jesus. 25As he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was terrified, and answered, “Go your way for this time, and when it is convenient for me, I will summon you.” 26Meanwhile, he also hoped that money would be given to him by Paul, that he might release him. Therefore also he sent for him more often, and talked with him. 27But when two years were fulfilled, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus, and desiring to gain favor with the Jews, Felix left Paul in bonds.
1En vijf dagen daarna kwam de hogepriester Ananias af met de ouderlingen, en een zekeren voorspraak, genaamd Tertullus, dewelke verschenen voor den stadhouder tegen Paulus. 2En als hij geroepen was, begon Tertullus hem te beschuldigen, zeggende: 3Dat wij grote vrede door u bekomen, en dat vele loffelijke diensten deze volke geschieden door uw voorzichtigheid, machtigste Felix, nemen wij ganselijk en overal met alle dankbaarheid aan. 4Maar opdat ik u niet lang ophoude, ik bid u, dat gij ons, naar uw bescheidenheid, kortelijk hoort. 5Want wij hebben dezen man bevonden te zijn een pest, en een, die oproer verwekt onder al de Joden, door de ganse wereld, en een oppersten voorstander van de sekte der Nazarenen. 6Die ook gepoogd heeft den tempel te ontheiligen, welken wij ook gegrepen hebben, en naar onze wet hebben willen oordelen. 7Maar Lysias, de overste, daarover komende, heeft hem met groot geweld uit onze handen weggebracht; 8Gebiedende zijn beschuldigers tot u te komen; van dewelken gij zelf, hem onderzocht hebbende, zult kunnen verstaan al hetgeen, waarvan wij hem beschuldigen. 9En ook de Joden stemden het toe, zeggende, dat deze dingen alzo waren. 10Maar Paulus, als hem de stadhouder gewenkt had, dat hij zou spreken, antwoordde: Dewijl ik weet, dat gij nu vele jaren over dit volk rechter zijt geweest, zo verantwoord ik mijzelven met des te beteren moed. 11Alzo gij kunt weten, dat het niet meer dan twaalf dagen zijn, van dat ik ben opgekomen om te aanbidden te Jeruzalem; 12En zij hebben mij noch in den tempel gevonden tot iemand sprekende, of enige samenrotting des volks makende, noch in de synagogen, noch in de stad; 13En zij kunnen niet bewijzen, waarvan zij mij nu beschuldigen. 14Maar dit beken ik u, dat ik naar dien weg, welken zij sekte noemen, den God der vaderen alzo diene, gelovende alles, wat in de wet en in de profeten geschreven is; 15Hebbende hoop op God, welke dezen ook zelf verwachten, dat er een opstanding der doden wezen zal, beiden der rechtvaardigen en der onrechtvaardigen. 16En hierin oefen ik mijzelven, om altijd een onergerlijk geweten te hebben bij God en de mensen. 17Doch na vele jaren ben ik gekomen om aalmoezen te doen aan mijn volk, en offeranden. 18Waarover mij gevonden hebben, geheiligd zijnde, in den tempel, niet met volk, noch met beroerte, enige Joden uit Azie; 19Welke behoorden hier voor u tegenwoordig te zijn, en mij te beschuldigen, indien zij iets hadden tegen mij. 20Of dat dezen zelf zeggen of zij enig onrecht in mij gevonden hebben, als ik voor den raad stond; 21Dan van dit enig woord, hetwelk ik riep, staande onder hen: Over de opstanding der doden word ik heden van ulieden geoordeeld! 22Toen nu Felix dit gehoord had, stelde hij hen uit, zeggende: Als ik nader wetenschap van dezen weg zal hebben, wanneer Lysias, de overste, zal afgekomen zijn, zo zal ik volle kennis nemen van uw zaken. 23En hij beval den hoofdman over honderd, dat Paulus zou bewaard worden, en verlichting hebben, en dat hij niemand van de zijnen zou beletten hem te dienen, of tot hem te komen. 24En na sommige dagen, Felix, daar gekomen zijnde met Drusilla, zijn vrouw, die een Jodin was, ontbood Paulus, en hoorde hem van het geloof in Christus. 25En als hij handelde van rechtvaardigheid, en matigheid, en van het toekomende oordeel, Felix, zeer bevreesd geworden zijnde, antwoordde: Voor ditmaal ga heen; en als ik gelegenen tijd zal hebben bekomen, zo zal ik u tot mij roepen. 26En tegelijk ook hopende, dat hem van Paulus geld gegeven zou worden, opdat hij hem losliet; waarom hij hem ook dikwijls ontbood, en sprak met hem. 27Maar als twee jaren vervuld waren, kreeg Felix Porcius Festus in zijn plaats; en Felix, willende den Joden gunst bewijzen, liet Paulus gevangen.
