1Chúng ta phân rẽ các ngươi đó xong, bèn xuống tàu, đi thẳng đến thành Cốt, này hôm sau tới thành Rô-đơ, và từ đó đến thành Ba-ta-ra. 2ở đó gặp một chiếc tàu, dương buồm chạy qua xứ Phê-ni-xi; chúng ta bèn xuống đi. 3Thấy đảo Chíp-rơ, thì tránh bên hữu, cứ theo đường đến xứ Sy-ri, đậu tại thành Ty-rơ, vì tàu phải cất hàng hóa tại đó. 4Chúng ta đi tìm được các môn đồ rồi, bèn ở lại với họ bảy ngày. Các môn đồ chịu Ðức Thánh Linh cảm động, dặn Phao-lô chớ lên thành Giê-ru-sa-lem. 5nhưng, khi kỳ tạm trú chúng ta đã qua, thì lại đi; cả môn đồ với vợ con đều tiễn chúng ta ra đến ngoài thành, ai nấy đều quì xuống trên bờ, cùng nhau cầu nguyện, 6rồi từ giã nhau. Ðoạn, chúng ta xuống tàu; môn đồ trở về nhà. 7Còn chúng ta đi hết đường thủy, thì ở thành Ty-rơ sang thành Bê-lô-lê-mai, chào thăm anh em và ở lại với họ một ngày. 8Ngày mai, chúng ta ở nơi đó đi, đến thành Sê-sa-rê; vào nhà Phi-líp, là người giảng Tin Lành, một trong bảy thầy phó tế, rồi ở lại đó. 9Người có bốn con gái đồng trinh hay nói tiên tri. 10Chúng ta ở đó đã mấy ngày, có một người tiên tri tên là A-ga-bút ở xứ Giu-đê xuống. 11Người đến thăm chúng ta, rồi lấy dây lưng của Phao-lô trói chơn tay mình, mà nói rằng: nầy là lời Ðức Thánh-Linh phán: Tại thành Giê-ru-sa-lem, dân Giu-đa sẽ trói người có dây lưng nầy như vậy, mà nộp trong tay người ngoại đạo. 12Khi đã nghe bấy nhiêu lời, thì các tín đồ nơi đó và chúng ta đều xin Phao-lô đừng lên thành Giê-ru-sa-lem. 13Nhưng người trả lời rằng: Anh em làm chi mà khóc lóc cho nao lòng tôi? Vì phần tôi sẵn lòng chẳng những để bị trói thôi, lại cũng sẵn lòng vì danh Ðức Chúa Jêsus chịu chết tại thành Giê-ru-sa-lem nữa. 14Người chẳng khứng chịu khuyên dỗ, thì chúng ta không ép nữa, mà nói rằng: Xin cho ý muốn của Chúa được nên! 15Qua những ngày đó, chúng ta sắm sửa, rồi lên thành Giê-ru-sa-lem. 16Có mấy người môn đồ ở thành Sê-sa-rê cũng đến đó với chúng ta, dẫn chúng ta vào nhà tên Ma-na-sôn kia, quê ở Chíp-rơ, là một môn đồ lâu nay, và người cho chúng ta trọ tại nhà mình. 17Chúng ta đến thành Giê-ru-sa-lem, thì anh em vui mừng tiếp rước. 18Bữa sau, Phao-lô đi với chúng ta tới nhà Gia-cơ; có hết thảy các trưởng lão nhóm họp tại đó. 19Phao-lô chào mừng các người đó rồi, bèn thuật lại từng điều mọi sự Ðức Chúa Trời đã bởi chức vụ mình làm ra trong người ngoại. 20Các người ấy nghe vậy thì ngợi khen Ðức Chúa Trời. Ðoạn, nói cùng người rằng: Anh ơi, anh thấy biết mấy vạn người Giu-đa đã tin, và hết thảy đều sốt sắng về luật pháp. 21Vả, chúng đã hay rằng anh dạy các người Giu-đa ở trong các dân ngoại rằng phải từ bỏ Môi-se, chớ nên làm phép cắt bì cho con mình, hay là ăn ở theo thói tục mình nữa. 22Vậy, khá lo liệu làm sao? Chắc rằng dân chúng sẽ nhóm lại; vì hẳn sẽ biết rằng anh đã tới rồi. 23Nên, hãy làm theo như chúng tôi sẽ nói cho anh: Chúng tôi đây có bốn người đều mắc lời thề; 24hãy đem bốn người đó cùng đi, làm lễ tinh sạch cho mình luôn với họ, và hãy chịu tiền họ phải trả để cạo đầu. Vậy thì ai nấy sẽ biết mọi tin đồn về anh đều chẳng thật, song rõ anh cũng ăn ở theo luật pháp vậy. 25Còn người ngoại đã tin, chúng tôi có viết thơ cho họ về điều chúng tôi đã định: là chỉ phải kiêng ăn của cùng thần tượng, huyết và thú vật chết ngộp, cùng chớ gian dâm. 26Phao-lô bèn đem bốn người cùng đi, vừa đến ngày sau, làm lễ tinh sạch cùng họ, rồi vào trong đền thờ, đặng tỏ ra ngày nào kỳ tinh sạch sẽ trọn, và dâng của lễ về mỗi người trong bọn mình. 27Khi bảy ngày gần trọn, thì các người Giu-đa, quê A-si, thấy Phao-lô trong đền thờ, bèn xui cả đoàn dân dấy loạn, rồi bắt người, 28mà kêu lên rằng: Hỡi các người Y-sơ-ra-ên, hãy đến giúp với! Kìa, người nầy giảng dạy khắp thiên hạ, nghịch cùng dân, nghịch cùng luật pháp, và nghịch cùng chốn này nữa, đến đỗi hắn dẫn người Gờ-réc vào trong đền thờ, và làm cho nơi thánh nầy bị ô uế. 29Số là, chúng trước đã thấy Trô-phim, người Ê-phê-sô, ở với Phao-lô tại trong thành phố, nên ngờ rằng Phao-lô đã dẫn người vào đền thờ. 30Cả thành đều xôn xao, dân chúng chạy nhóm lại đoàn đông, bắt Phao-lô, kéo ra khỏi đền thờ, tức thì các cửa đều đóng lại. 31Chúng đương tìm phương giết người, thì tiếng đồn đến quan quản cơ rằng cả thành Giê-ru-sa lem-đều xôn xao. 32Người lập tức bắt quân lính và cai đội kéo đến nơi chúng. Vừa thấy quản cơ và quân lính thì chúng thôi không đánh Phao-lô nữa. 33Quản cơ bèn tới gần, bắt người rồi truyền lấy hai cái xích xích lại; đoạn, hỏi người là ai, và đã làm việc gì. 34Trong đoàn dân, kẻ reo lên thể nầy, người la lên thể khác; nhơn sự rối loạn, người không biết được chắc, nên dạy điệu về đồn. 35Lúc Phao-lô bước lên thềm, quân lính phải khiêng người đi, bởi cớ đoàn dân hung bạo lắm. 36Vì có đám dân theo sau đông mà kêu rằng: Hãy giết đi! 37Lúc Phao-lô vào đồn, thì nói với quản cơ rằng: Tôi có phép nói với ông đôi điều chăng? Quản cơ trả lời rằng: Người biết nói tiếng Gờ-réc sao? 38Vậy thì ngươi hẳn chẳng phải là người Ê-díp-tô kia, ngày trước đã gây loạn, kéo bốn ngàn kẻ cướp vào nơi đồng vắng hay sao? 39Phao-lô trả lời rằng: Tôi là người Giu-đa, vốn ở thành Tạt-sơ, cung điện của một thành trong xứ Si-li-si tức là thành có danh tiếng; xin hãy cho phép tôi nói với chúng dân. 40Ðược phép rồi, Phao-lô đứng trên thềm, giơ tay ra dấu cho dân. Ðâu đó yên lặng, người bèn nói tiếng Hê-bơ-rơ rằng:
1When we had departed from them and had set sail, we came with a straight course to Cos, and the next day to Rhodes, and from there to Patara. 2Having found a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, we went aboard, and set sail. 3When we had come in sight of Cyprus, leaving it on the left hand, we sailed to Syria, and landed at Tyre, for there the ship was to unload her cargo. 4Having found disciples, we stayed there seven days. These said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem. 5When those days were over, we departed and went on our journey. They all, with wives and children, brought us on our way until we were out of the city. Kneeling down on the beach, we prayed. 6After saying goodbye to each other, we went on board the ship, and they returned home again. 7When we had finished the voyage from Tyre, we arrived at Ptolemais. We greeted the brothers, and stayed with them one day. 8On the next day, we, who were Paul’s companions, departed, and came to Caesarea. We entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him. 9Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied. 10As we stayed there some days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11Coming to us, and taking Paul’s belt, he bound his own feet and hands, and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit: ‘So will the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and will deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’” 12When we heard these things, both we and they of that place begged him not to go up to Jerusalem. 13Then Paul answered, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” 14When he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, “The Lord’s will be done.” 15After these days we took up our baggage and went up to Jerusalem. 16Some of the disciples from Caesarea also went with us, bringing one Mnason of Cyprus, an early disciple, with whom we would stay. 17When we had come to Jerusalem, the brothers received us gladly. 18The day following, Paul went in with us to James; and all the elders were present. 19When he had greeted them, he reported one by one the things which God had worked among the Gentiles through his ministry. 20They, when they heard it, glorified God. They said to him, “You see, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews of those who have believed, and they are all zealous for the law. 21They have been informed about you, that you teach all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children neither to walk after the customs. 22What then? The assembly must certainly meet, for they will hear that you have come. 23Therefore do what we tell you. We have four men who have taken a vow. 24Take them, and purify yourself with them, and pay their expenses for them, that they may shave their heads. Then all will know that there is no truth in the things that they have been informed about you, but that you yourself also walk keeping the law. 25But concerning the Gentiles who believe, we have written our decision that they should observe no such thing, except that they should keep themselves from food offered to idols, from blood, from strangled things, and from sexual immorality.” 26Then Paul took the men, and the next day, purified himself and went with them into the temple, declaring the fulfillment of the days of purification, until the offering was offered for every one of them. 27When the seven days were almost completed, the Jews from Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the multitude and laid hands on him, 28crying out, “Men of Israel, help! This is the man who teaches all men everywhere against the people, and the law, and this place. Moreover, he also brought Greeks into the temple, and has defiled this holy place!” 29For they had seen Trophimus, the Ephesian, with him in the city, and they supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple. 30All the city was moved, and the people ran together. They seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple. Immediately the doors were shut. 31As they were trying to kill him, news came up to the commanding officer of the regiment that all Jerusalem was in an uproar. 32Immediately he took soldiers and centurions, and ran down to them. They, when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, stopped beating Paul. 33Then the commanding officer came near, arrested him, commanded him to be bound with two chains, and inquired who he was and what he had done. 34Some shouted one thing, and some another, among the crowd. When he couldn’t find out the truth because of the noise, he commanded him to be brought into the barracks. 35When he came to the stairs, he was carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the crowd; 36for the multitude of the people followed after, crying out, “Away with him!” 37As Paul was about to be brought into the barracks, he asked the commanding officer, “May I speak to you?” He said, “Do you know Greek? 38Aren’t you then the Egyptian, who before these days stirred up to sedition and led out into the wilderness the four thousand men of the Assassins?” 39But Paul said, “I am a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no insignificant city. I beg you, allow me to speak to the people.” 40When he had given him permission, Paul, standing on the stairs, beckoned with his hand to the people. When there was a great silence, he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, saying,
1En als het geschiedde, dat wij van hen gescheiden en afgevaren waren, zo liepen wij rechtuit en kwamen te Kos, en den dag daaraan te Rhodus, en van daar te Patara. 2En een schip gevonden hebbende, dat naar Fenicie overvoer, gingen wij er in en voeren af. 3En als wij Cyprus in het gezicht gekregen, en dat aan de linker hand gelaten hadden, voeren wij naar Syrie, en kwamen aan te Tyrus; want het schip zoude aldaar den last ontladen. 4En de discipelen gevonden hebbende, bleven wij daar zeven dagen; dewelke tot Paulus zeiden door den Geest, dat hij niet zou opgaan naar Jeruzalem. 5Toen het nu geschiedde, dat wij deze dagen doorgebracht hadden, gingen wij uit, en reisden voort; en zij geleidden ons allen met vrouwen en kinderen tot buiten de stad; en aan den oever nederknielende, hebben wij gebeden. 6En als wij elkander gegroet hadden, gingen wij in het schip; maar zijlieden keerden wederom, elk naar het zijne. 7Wij nu, de scheepvaart volbracht hebbende van Tyrus, kwamen aan te Ptolemais, en de broeders gegroet hebbende, bleven een dag bij hen. 8En des anderen daags, Paulus en wij, die met hem waren, gingen van daar en kwamen te Cesarea; en gegaan zijnde in het huis van Filippus, den evangelist (die een was van de zeven), bleven wij bij hem. 9Deze nu had vier dochters, nog maagden, die profeteerden. 10En als wij daar vele dagen gebleven waren, kwam er een zeker profeet af van Judea, met name Agabus; 11En hij kwam tot ons, en nam den gordel van Paulus, en zichzelven handen en voeten gebonden hebbende, zeide: Dit zegt de Heilige Geest: Den man, wiens deze gordel is, zullen de Joden alzo te Jeruzalem binden, en overleveren in de handen der heidenen. 12Als wij nu dit hoorden, baden beiden wij en die van die plaats waren, dat hij niet zou opgaan naar Jeruzalem. 13Maar Paulus antwoordde: Wat doet gij, dat gij weent, en mijn hart week maakt? Want ik ben bereid niet alleen gebonden te worden, maar ook te sterven te Jeruzalem voor den Naam van den Heere Jezus. 14En als hij zich niet liet afraden, hielden wij ons tevreden, zeggende: De wil des Heeren geschiede. 15En na die dagen maakten wij ons gereed, en gingen op naar Jeruzalem. 16En met ons gingen ook sommigen der discipelen van Cesarea, leidende met zich een zekeren Mnason, van Cyprus, een ouden discipel, bij dewelken wij zouden te huis liggen. 17En als wij te Jeruzalem gekomen waren, ontvingen ons de broeders blijdelijk. 18En den volgenden dag ging Paulus met ons in tot Jakobus; en al de ouderlingen waren daar gekomen. 19En als hij hen gegroet had, verhaalde hij van stuk tot stuk, wat God onder de heidenen door zijn dienst gedaan had. 20En zij, dat gehoord hebbende, loofden den Heere, en zeiden tot hem: Gij ziet, broeder, hoevele duizenden van Joden er zijn, die geloven; en zij zijn allen ijveraars van de wet. 21En zij zijn aangaande u bericht, dat gij al de Joden, die onder de heidenen zijn, leert van Mozes afvallen, zeggende: dat zij de kinderen niet zouden besnijden, noch naar de wijze der wet wandelen. 22Wat is er dan te doen? Het is gans nodig, dat de menigte samenkome; want zij zullen horen, dat gij gekomen zijt. 23Doe dan hetgeen wij u zeggen: Wij hebben vier mannen, die een gelofte gedaan hebben. 24Neem dezen tot u, en heilig u met hen, en doe de onkosten nevens hen, opdat zij het hoofd bescheren mogen; en alle mogen weten, dat er niets is aan hetgeen, waarvan zij, aangaande u, bericht zijn; maar dat gij alzo wandelt, dat gij ook zelve de wet onderhoudt. 25Doch van de heidenen, die geloven, hebben wij geschreven en goed gevonden, dat zij niets dergelijks zouden onderhouden, dan dat zij zich wachten van hetgeen den afgoden geofferd is, en van bloed, en van het verstikte, en van hoererij. 26Toen nam Paulus de mannen met zich, en den dag daaraan met hen geheiligd zijnde, ging hij in den tempel, en verkondigde, dat de dagen der heiliging vervuld waren, blijvende daar, totdat voor een iegelijk van hen de offerande opgeofferd was. 27Als nu de zeven dagen zouden voleindigd worden, zagen hem de Joden van Azie in den tempel, en beroerden al het volk, en sloegen de handen aan hem, 28Roepende: Gij Israelietische mannen, komt te hulp! Deze is de mens, die tegen het volk, en de wet, en deze plaats allen man overal leert; en bovendien heeft hij ook Grieken in den tempel gebracht, en heeft deze heilige plaats ontheiligd. 29Want zij hadden te voren Trofimus, den Efezier, met hem in de stad gezien, welken zij meenden, dat Paulus in den tempel gebracht had. 30En de gehele stad kwam in roer en het volk liep samen; en zij grepen Paulus, en trokken hem buiten den tempel; en terstond werden de deuren gesloten. 31En als zij hem zochten te doden, kwam het gerucht tot den overste der bende, dat geheel Jeruzalem in verwarring was. 32Welke terstond krijgsknechten en hoofdmannen over honderd tot zich nam, en liep af naar hen toe. Zij nu, den oversten en de krijgsknechten ziende, hielden op van Paulus te slaan. 33Toen naderde de overste en greep hem, en beval, dat men hem met twee ketenen zou binden; en vraagde, wie hij was, en wat hij gedaan had. 34En onder de schare riep de ene dit, de andere wat anders. Doch als hij de zekerheid niet kon weten vanwege de beroerte, beval hij, dat men hem in de legerplaats zou brengen. 35En als hij aan de trappen gekomen was, gebeurde het, dat hij van de krijgsknechten gedragen werd vanwege het geweld der schare. 36Want de menigte des volks volgde, al roepende: Weg met hem! 37En als Paulus nu in de legerplaats zou geleid worden, zeide hij tot den overste: Is het mij geoorloofd tot u wat te spreken? En hij zeide: Kent gij Grieks? 38Zijt gij dan niet de Egyptenaar, die voor deze dagen oproer verwekte, en de vier duizend moordenaars naar de woestijn uitleidde? 39Maar Paulus zeide: Ik ben een Joods man van Tarsen, een burger van gene onvermaarde stad in Cilicie, en ik bid u, laat mij toe tot het volk te spreken. 40En als hij het toegelaten had, Paulus, staande op de trappen, wenkte met de hand tot het volk; en als er grote stilte geworden was, sprak hij hen aan in de Hebreeuwse taal, zeggende:
