1Phao-lô mắt chăm chỉ trên tòa công luận, nói rằng: Hỡi các anh em, trước mặt Ðức Chúa Trời, tôi đã ăn ở trọn lương tâm tử tế cho đến ngày nay. 2Nhưng thầy tế lễ thượng phẩm là A-na-nia biểu mấy kẻ đứng gần Phao-lô vả miệng người. 3Phao-lô bèn nói cùng người rằng: Hỡi bức tường tô trắng kia, Ðức Chúa Trời sẽ đánh ông; ông ngồi để xử đoán tôi theo luật pháp, mà lại không kể luật pháp, biểu người đánh tôi! 4Những kẻ đứng đó nói rằng: Ngươi nhiếc móc thầy cả thượng phẩm của Ðức Chúa Trời sao! 5Phao-lô trả lời rằng: Hỡi anh em, tôi chẳng biết là thầy cả thượng phẩm; vì có chép rằng: Chớ sỉ nhục người cai trị dân mình. 6Phao-lô biết trong bọn họ phần thì người Sa-đu-sê, phần thì người Pha-ri-si, bèn kêu lên trước tòa công luận rằng: Hỡi anh em, tôi là người Pha-ri-si, con của dòng Pha-ri-si. Ấy là vì sự trông cậy của chúng ta và sự sống lại của những kẻ chết mà tôi phải chịu xử đoán. 7Người vừa nói xong như vậy, thì sự cãi lẫy nổi lên giữa người Pha-ri-si với người Sa-đu-sê, và hội đồng chia phe ra. 8Vì chưng người Sa-đu-sê quyết rằng không có sự sống lại, cũng không có thiên sứ, thần chi hết, còn người Pha-ri-si lại nhận cả hai điều tin ấy. 9Tiếng kêu la lớn liền dậy lên. Có mấy thầy thông giáo về dòng Pha-ri-si đứng dậy cãi lẫy cùng kẻ khác rằng: Chúng ta chẳng thấy trong người nầy có điều ác gì. Nào ai biết chẳng phải thần hoặc thiên sứ đã nói cùng người? 10Vì sự rối loạn càng thêm, quản cơ e Phao-lô bị chúng phân thây chăng, nên truyền quân kéo xuống, đặng cướp người ra khỏi giữa đám họ và đem về trong đồn. 11Qua đêm sau, Chúa hiện đến cùng người mà phán rằng: Hãy giục lòng mạnh mẽ, ngươi đã làm chứng cho ta tại thành Giê-ru-sa-lem thể nào, thì cũng phải làm chứng cho ta tại thành Rô-ma thể ấy. 12Ðến sáng, người Giu-đa họp đảng lập mưu, mà thề nguyện rằng chẳng ăn chẳng uống cho đến giết được Phao-lô. 13Có hơn bốn mươi người đã lập mưu đó. 14Họ đến kiếm các thầy tế lễ cả và các trưởng lão mà rằng: Chúng tôi đã thề với nhau rằng chẳng ăn chi hết cho đến lúc giết được Phao-lô. 15Vậy bây giờ các ông với tòa công luận hãy xin quản cơ bắt nó đến đứng trước mặt các ông, như là muốn tra xét việc nó cho kỹ càng hơn nữa; còn chúng tôi sửa soạn sẵn để khi nó chưa đến đây thì giết đi. 16Nhưng có con trai của chị Phao-lô biết được mưu gian ấy, đến nơi đồn, vào nói trước cho Phao-lô. 17Phao-lô bèn gọi một đội trưởng mà nói rằng: hãy đem gã trai trẻ nầy đến cùng quan quản cơ, chàng có việc muốn báo tin. 18Vậy, đội trưởng đem chàng đi, dẫn đến nhà quản cơ, và thưa rằng: Tên tù Phao-lô có gọi tôi biểu đem gã trai trẻ nầy đến cùng quan, chàng có việc muốn nói. 19Quản cơ nắm tay người trai trẻ, kéo xê ra, hỏi rằng: Ngươi có việc gì báo tin cùng ta? 20Thưa rằng: Người Giu-đa đã định xin quan, đến ngày mai, bắt Phao-lô đứng trước tòa công luận, như là họ muốn tra xét việc của người cho kỹ càng hơn. 21Nhưng xin quan chớ tin họ, vì có hơn bốn mươi người trong bọn họ lập kế hại Phao-lô, đã thề nguyện với nhau chẳng ăn uống chi hết trước khi chưa giết được người; hiện bây giờ, họ đã sắm sẵn, chỉ đợi quan trả lời đó thôi. 22Quản cơ cho gã trai trẻ ấy về, cấm không cho nói với ai về điều người đã tỏ ra cùng mình. 23Ðoạn, quản cơ đòi hai viên đội trưởng, dặn rằng: Vừa giờ thứ ba đêm nay, hãy sắm sẵn hai trăm quân, bảy mươi lính kỵ, hai trăm lính cầm giáo, đặng đi đến thành Sê-sa-rê. 24Lại cũng phải sắm ngựa nữa, để đưa Phao-lô vô sự đến nơi quan tổng đốc Phê-lít. 25Người lại viết cho quan đó một bức thơ như sau nầy: 26Cơ-lốt Ly-sia chúc bình an cho quan lớn tổng đốc Phê-lít! 27Dân Giu-đa đã bắt người nầy, toan giết đi, khi tôi đã đem quân đến thình lình mà cướp người ra khỏi, vì đã nghe người là quốc dân Rô-ma. 28Bởi tôi muốn biết vì cớ nào họ cáo người, nên giải người đến tòa công luận. 29Tôi thấy người bị cáo mấy việc về luật pháp họ, nhưng họ không kiện người về một tội nào đáng chết hay đáng tù cả. 30Song tôi có nghe người ta tính kế hại người nầy, nên lập tức sai người đến nơi quan, và cũng cho các kẻ cáo người biết rằng phải đến trước mặt quan mà đối nại. 31Vậy, quân lính đem Phao-lô đi theo như mạng lịnh mình đã lãnh đương ban đêm, điệu đến thành An-ti-ba-tri. 32Sáng ngày, lính kỵ đi với người, còn quân khác trở về đồn. 33những người nầy tới thành Sê-sa-rê, đưa thơ cho quan tổng đốc và đem nộp Phao-lô. 34Quan tổng đốc đọc thơ rồi, bèn hỏi Phao-lô vốn ở tỉnh nào, vừa biết người quê tỉnh Si-li-si, 35thì rằng: Lúc nào bọn nguyên cáo đến đây, ta sẽ nghe ngươi. Ðoạn, truyền giữ Phao-lô lại trong nơi công đàng Hê-rốt.
1Paul, looking steadfastly at the council, said, “Brothers, I have lived before God in all good conscience until this day.” 2The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth. 3Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the law, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?” 4Those who stood by said, “Do you malign God’s high priest?” 5Paul said, “I didn’t know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’” 6But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!” 7When he had said this, an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. 8For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess all of these. 9A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees part stood up, and contended, saying, “We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!” 10When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them, and bring him into the barracks. 11The following night, the Lord stood by him, and said, “Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome.” 12When it was day, some of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul. 13There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy. 14They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great curse, to taste nothing until we have killed Paul. 15Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.” 16But Paul’s sister’s son heard of their lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul. 17Paul summoned one of the centurions, and said, “Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him.” 18So he took him, and brought him to the commanding officer, and said, “Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you, who has something to tell you.” 19The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?” 20He said, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though intending to inquire somewhat more accurately concerning him. 21Therefore don’t yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse neither to eat nor to drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you.” 22So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, “Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me.” 23He called to himself two of the centurions, and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen, and two hundred men armed with spears, at the third hour of the night.” 24He asked them to provide animals, that they might set Paul on one, and bring him safely to Felix the governor. 25He wrote a letter like this: 26“Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings. 27“This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them, when I came with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman. 28Desiring to know the cause why they accused him, I brought him down to their council. 29I found him to be accused about questions of their law, but not to be charged with anything worthy of death or of imprisonment. 30When I was told that the Jews lay in wait for the man, I sent him to you immediately, charging his accusers also to bring their accusations against him before you. Farewell.” 31So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris. 32But on the next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks. 33When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him. 34When the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. When he understood that he was from Cilicia, he said, 35“I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive.” He commanded that he be kept in Herod’s palace.

Zit gij ook om mij te oordelen naar de wet, en beveelt gij, tegen de wet, dat men mij zal slaan? 4En die daarbij stonden, zeiden: Scheldt gij den hogepriester Gods? 5En Paulus zeide: Ik wist niet, broeders! dat het de hogepriester was; want er is geschreven: Den overste uws volks zult gij niet vloeken. 6En Paulus wetende dat het ene deel was van de Sadduceen, en het andere van de Farizeen, riep in den raad: Mannen broeders, ik ben een Farizeer, eens Farizeers zoon; ik word over de hoop en opstanding der doden geoordeeld. 7En als hij dit gesproken had, ontstond er tweedracht tussen de Farizeen en de Sadduceen, en de menigte werd verdeeld. 8Want de Sadduceen zeggen, dat er geen opstanding is, noch engel, noch geest, maar de Farizeen belijden het beide. 9En er geschiedde een groot geroep; en de Schriftgeleerden van de zijde der Farizeen stonden op, en streden, zeggende: Wij vinden geen kwaad in dezen mens; en indien een geest tot hem gesproken heeft, of een engel, laat ons tegen God niet strijden. 10En als er grote tweedracht ontstaan was, de overste, vrezende, dat Paulus van hen verscheurd mocht worden, gebood, dat het krijgsvolk zou afkomen, en hem uit het midden van hen wegrukken, en in de legerplaats brengen. 11En den volgenden nacht stond de Heere bij hem, en zeide: Heb goeden moed, Paulus, want gelijk gij te Jeruzalem van Mij betuigd hebt alzo moet gij ook te Rome getuigen. 12En als het dag geworden was, maakten sommigen van de Joden een samenrotting, en vervloekten zichzelven, zeggende, dat zij noch eten noch drinken zouden, totdat zij Paulus zouden gedood hebben. 13En zij waren meer dan veertig, die dezen eed te zamen gedaan hadden; 14Dewelke gingen tot de overpriesters en de ouderlingen, en zeiden: Wij hebben ons zelven met vervloeking vervloekt, niets te zullen nuttigen, totdat wij Paulus zullen gedood hebben. 15Gij dan nu, laat den overste weten met den raad, dat hij hem morgen tot u afbrenge, alsof gij nadere kennis zoudt nemen van zijn zaken; en wij zijn bereid hem om te brengen, eer hij bij u komt. 16En als de zoon van Paulus' zuster deze lage gehoord had, kwam hij daar, en ging in de legerplaats, en boodschapte het Paulus. 17En Paulus riep tot zich een van de hoofdmannen over honderd, en zeide: Leid dezen jongeling heen tot den overste; want hij heeft hem wat te boodschappen. 18Deze dan nam hem en bracht hem tot den overste, en zeide: Paulus, de gevangene, heeft mij tot zich geroepen, en begeerd, dat ik dezen jongeling tot u zou brengen, die u wat heeft te zeggen. 19De overste nu nam hem bij de hand, en bezijden gegaan zijnde, vraagde hij: Wat is het dat gij mij hebt te boodschappen? 20En hij zeide: De Joden zijn overeengekomen, om van u te begeren, dat gij Paulus morgen in den raad zoudt afbrengen, alsof zij iets van hem nader zouden onderzoeken. 21Doch geloof hen niet; want meer dan veertig mannen uit hen leggen hem lagen, welke zichzelven met een vervloeking verbonden hebben noch te eten noch te drinken, totdat zij hem zullen omgebracht hebben; en zij zijn nu gereed, verwachtende de toezegging van u. 22De overste dan liet den jongeling gaan, hem gebiedende: Zeg niemand voort, dat gij mij zulks geopenbaard hebt. 23En zekere twee van de hoofdmannen over honderd tot zich geroepen hebbende, zeide hij: Maakt tweehonderd krijgsknechten gereed, opdat zij naar Cesarea trekken, en zeventig ruiters, en tweehonderd schutters, tegen de derde ure des nachts; 24En laat ze zadel beesten bestellen, opdat zij Paulus daarop zetten, en behouden overbrengen tot den stadhouder Felix. 25En hij schreef een brief, hebbende dezen inhoud: 26Claudius Lysias aan den machtigsten stadhouder Felix groetenis. 27Alzo deze man van de Joden gegrepen was, en van hen omgebracht zou geworden zijn, ben ik daarover gekomen met het krijgsvolk, en heb hem hun ontnomen, bericht zijnde, dat hij een Romein is. 28En willende de zaak weten, waarover zij hem beschuldigden, bracht ik hem af in hun raad; 29Welken ik bevond beschuldigd te worden over vragen hunner wet; maar geen beschuldiging tegen hem te zijn, die den dood of banden waardig is. 30En als mij te kennen gegeven was, dat van de Joden een lage tegen deze man gelegd zou worden, zo heb ik hem terstond aan u gezonden; gebiedende ook den beschuldigers voor u te zeggen, hetgeen zij tegen hem hadden. Vaarwel. 31De krijgsknechten dan, gelijk hun bevolen was, namen Paulus, en brachten hem des nachts tot Antipatris. 32En des anderen daags, latende de ruiters met hem trekken, keerden zij wederom naar de legerplaats. 33Dewelken als zij te Cesarea gekomen waren, en den brief den stadhouder overgeleverd hadden, hebben zij ook Paulus voor hem gesteld. 34En de stadhouder, den brief gelezen hebbende, vraagde, uit wat provincie hij was; en verstaande, dat hij van Cilicie was, 35Zeide hij: Ik zal u horen, als ook uw beschuldigers hier zullen gekomen zijn. En hij beval, dat hij in het rechthuis van Herodes zou bewaard worden.
