1Gia-cốp thấy xứ Ê-díp-tô có lúa bán ra, bèn nói cùng các con trai mình rằng: Sao bay ngơ ngẩn nhìn nhau vậy? 2Lại rằng: Nầy, cha nghe dưới xứ Ê-díp-tô có lúa bán; bay hãy xuống đó mua lúa cho chúng ta, hầu cho chúng ta sống và khỏi chết, chớ! 3Mười người anh của Giô-sép bèn xuống Ê-díp-tô đặng mua lúa. 4Nhưng Gia-cốp không cho Bên-gia-min, em Giô-sép, đi cùng các anh; vì nghĩ rằng: Ta nên giữ chừng, kẻo xảy ra điều rủi ro cho nó. 5Xứ Ca-na-an bấy giờ cũng đói, nên các con trai của Y-sơ-ra-ên cũng đổ xuống Ê-díp-tô mua lúa như các người khác. 6Vả, lúc nầy, chánh Giô-sép cai trị trong nước, và bán lúa cho cả dân bổn xứ. Các anh Giô-sép bèn đến, sấp mình xuống trước mặt người. 7Giô-sép thấy, nhìn biết các anh mình; nhưng giả làm mặt lạ cùng họ, nói một cách xẳng rằng: Các ngươi ở đâu đến? Ðáp rằng: Ở xứ Ca-na-an đến đặng mua lúa. 8Vậy, Giô-sép nhìn biết các anh mình; nhưng họ nhìn lại chẳng ra. 9Giô-sép nhớ lại điềm chiêm bao mình đã thấy về anh em mình, liền thét rằng: Các ngươi là thám tử, đến đây đặng dòm hành những nơi yếu óp của xứ ta. 10Ðáp rằng: Thưa chúa, chẳng phải vậy; các tôi tớ chúa đến đặng mua lúa mà thôi. 11Chúng tôi đây đều là con một cha, vốn nhà lương thiện, chẳng phải là thám tử đâu. 12Người đáp lại rằng: Chẳng phải; các ngươi đến đặng dòm hành những nơi yếu óp của xứ nầy. 13Ðáp rằng: Kẻ tôi tớ chúa có mười hai anh em, con của một cha, nguyên xứ Ca-na-an; nầy một người đã đi mất biệt, còn người út hiện bây giờ hãy ở tại nhà cùng cha chúng tôi. 14Giô-sép nói: Ấy quả thật như ta nói, các ngươi là thám tử. 15Ðây là điều ta thử các ngươi: Ta chỉ mạng Pha-ra-ôn mà thề rằng, hễ em út các ngươi không đến đây thì chẳng bao giờ các ngươi ra khỏi chốn nầy được. 16Hãy sai một người nào trong bọn các ngươi về dẫn em út xuống; còn bao nhiêu thì phải ở tù lại đây. Lời các ngươi phải thử đã, rồi ta sẽ biết các ngươi nói đó có quả thật chăng. Nếu chẳng thật, thì ta chỉ mạng Pha-ra-ôn thề rằng, các ngươi là thám tử đó. 17Ðoạn, Giô-sép truyền đem giam họ chung trong ngục ba ngày. 18Ngày thứ ba, Giô-sép nói cùng họ rằng: Ta kính sợ Ðức Chúa Trời; hãy làm như điều nầy, thì được sống. 19Nếu các ngươi vốn nhà lương thiện, thì hãy để một người nào ở tù lại đây, còn bao nhiêu đem lương thực về nuôi đói cho nhà các ngươi. 20Ðoạn, hãy dẫn em út xuống đây, thì lời các ngươi sẽ cho là thật, và các ngươi chẳng phải chết. Vậy, họ nghe theo. 21Họ bèn nói với nhau rằng: Quả thật chúng ta cam tội cùng em ta ra; vì lúc trước ta thấy tâm hồn nó buồn thảm khi nó xin nhờ ơn, nhưng ta không khứng cho; vậy nên tai vạ nầy mới xảy đến cho chúng ta. 22Ru-bên đáp rằng: Anh há không có nói cùng các em rằng: Chớ phạm tội nầy cùng đứa trẻ đó sao? Nhưng các em không nghe; nên bây giờ huyết nó đòi chúng ta thường lại. 23Vả, Giô-sép vẫn dùng người thông ngôn nói chuyện lại cùng các anh, nên họ tưởng Giô-sép chẳng nghe hiểu. 24Giô-sép xây mặt qua chỗ khác mà khóc. Ðoạn xây mặt lại nói chuyện cùng họ; bèn bắt Si-mê-ôn trong vòng anh em, truyền trói lại trước mặt họ. 25Giô-sép truyền đầy tớ xúc lúa đổ đầy bao và để bạc lại trong đó cho mỗi người anh em, cũng để thêm lương thực dùng dọc đường. Ðầy tớ làm y như lời. 26Ðoạn, anh em chất mấy bao lúa lên lưng lừa, rồi đi. 27Ðến quán, một người trong bọn mở bao ra cho lừa ăn thóc, thấy bạc mình ở tại miệng bao; 28bèn nói cùng anh em rằng: Bạc của tôi trả lại, hiện trong bao tôi đây! Các anh em nhát gan, vừa nói với nhau, vừa run, mà rằng: Ðức Chúa Trời đã làm chi cho chúng ta đây? 29Các anh em trở về cùng Gia-cốp, cha mình, tại xứ Ca-na-an, thuật lại cho người nghe mọi nỗi đã xảy đến, rằng: 30người đương làm chúa tại xứ Ê-díp-tô nói với chúng tôi cách xẳng xớm, cho chúng tôi là thám tử. 31Song chúng tôi có thưa cùng người rằng: Chúng tôi vốn nhà lương thiện, nào có phải là thám tử đâu. 32Chúng tôi được mười hai anh em, con một cha; một người đã đi mất biệt, còn người út hiện bây giờ ở nhà cùng cha, tại xứ Ca-na-an. 33Người làm chúa xứ đó dạy rằng: Làm như vầy, ta mới cho các ngươi là lương thiện: Hãy để lại cùng ta một người nào trong bọn các ngươi, còn bao nhiêu sẽ đem lương thực về nuôi đói cho nhà các ngươi; 34đoạn, hãy dẫn em út đến cho ta. Vậy, ta mới biết rằng các ngươi chẳng phải là thám tử, nhưng là người lương thiện; ta sẽ giao em lại cho, và các ngươi sẽ được buôn bán trong xứ nầy. 35Vả, đương khi các anh em trút lúa mì ra bao, nầy đâu, trong mỗi bao có gói bạc của mỗi người; cha và các anh em thấy những gói bạc mình, đều lấy làm sợ hãi. 36Gia-cốp, cha họ bèn nói rằng: Bay làm mất các con tao; Giô-sép đã mất biệt, Si-mê-ôn cũng mất biệt; mà bây giờ, lại muốn dẫn Bê-gia-min đi nữa sao! Các nông nỗi nầy đều đổ lại cho tao hết! 37Ru-bên thưa lại cùng cha rằng: Cha hãy giao em nơi tôi, tôi sẽ dẫn về cho. Ví bằng chẳng dẫn em về, thì cha hãy giết hai đứa con trai tôi đi. 38Nhưng Gia-cốp đáp rằng: Con út tao sẽ chẳng đi xuống với bay đâu; vì anh nó đã chết rồi, chỉ còn một mình nó mà thôi. Nếu điều rủi ro chi xảy đến cho nó nơi dọc đường bay đi, tức nhiên bay làm cho kẻ tóc bạc nầy đau lòng xót dạ xuống âm phủ.
1Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?” 2He said, “Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there, and buy for us from there, so that we may live, and not die.” 3Joseph’s ten brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt. 4But Jacob didn’t send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with his brothers; for he said, “Lest perhaps harm happen to him.” 5The sons of Israel came to buy among those who came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan. 6Joseph was the governor over the land. It was he who sold to all the people of the land. Joseph’s brothers came, and bowed themselves down to him with their faces to the earth. 7Joseph saw his brothers, and he recognized them, but acted like a stranger to them, and spoke roughly with them. He said to them, “Where did you come from?” They said, “From the land of Canaan to buy food.” 8Joseph recognized his brothers, but they didn’t recognize him. 9Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed about them, and said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see the nakedness of the land.” 10They said to him, “No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food. 11We are all one man’s sons; we are honest men. Your servants are not spies.” 12He said to them, “No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land!” 13They said, “We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is no more.” 14Joseph said to them, “It is like I told you, saying, ‘You are spies!’ 15By this you shall be tested. By the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go out from here, unless your youngest brother comes here. 16Send one of you, and let him get your brother, and you shall be bound, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you, or else by the life of Pharaoh surely you are spies.” 17He put them all together into custody for three days. 18Joseph said to them the third day, “Do this, and live, for I fear God. 19If you are honest men, then let one of your brothers be bound in your prison; but you go, carry grain for the famine of your houses. 20Bring your youngest brother to me; so will your words be verified, and you won’t die.” They did so. 21They said one to another, “We are certainly guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us, and we wouldn’t listen. Therefore this distress has come upon us.” 22Reuben answered them, saying, “Didn’t I tell you, saying, ‘Don’t sin against the child,’ and you wouldn’t listen? Therefore also, behold, his blood is required.” 23They didn’t know that Joseph understood them; for there was an interpreter between them. 24He turned himself away from them, and wept. Then he returned to them, and spoke to them, and took Simeon from among them, and bound him before their eyes. 25Then Joseph gave a command to fill their bags with grain, and to restore each man’s money into his sack, and to give them food for the way. So it was done to them. 26They loaded their donkeys with their grain, and departed from there. 27As one of them opened his sack to give his donkey food in the lodging place, he saw his money. Behold, it was in the mouth of his sack. 28He said to his brothers, “My money is restored! Behold, it is in my sack!” Their hearts failed them, and they turned trembling one to another, saying, “What is this that God has done to us?” 29They came to Jacob their father, to the land of Canaan, and told him all that had happened to them, saying, 30“The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly with us, and took us for spies of the country. 31We said to him, ‘We are honest men. We are no spies. 32We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no more, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.’ 33The man, the lord of the land, said to us, ‘By this I will know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain for the famine of your houses, and go your way. 34Bring your youngest brother to me. Then I will know that you are not spies, but that you are honest men. So I will deliver your brother to you, and you shall trade in the land.’” 35As they emptied their sacks, behold, each man’s bundle of money was in his sack. When they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid. 36Jacob, their father, said to them, “You have bereaved me of my children! Joseph is no more, Simeon is no more, and you want to take Benjamin away. All these things are against me.” 37Reuben spoke to his father, saying, “Kill my two sons, if I don’t bring him to you. Entrust him to my care, and I will bring him to you again.” 38He said, “My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left. If harm happens to him along the way in which you go, then you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.”

En zij zeiden: Uit het land Kanaan; om spijze te kopen. 8Jozef dan kende zijn broederen; maar zij kenden hem niet. 9Toen gedacht Jozef aan de dromen, die hij van hen gedroomd had; en hij zeide tot hen: Gij zijt verspieders, gij zijt gekomen om te bezichtigen, waar het land bloot is. 10En zij zeiden tot hem: Neen, mijn heer! maar uw knechten zijn gekomen, om spijze te kopen. 11Wij allen zijn eens mans zonen; wij zijn vroom; uw knechten zijn geen verspieders. 12En hij zeide tot hen: Neen, maar gij zijt gekomen, om te bezichtigen, waar het land bloot is. 13En zij zeiden: Wij, uw knechten, waren twaalf gebroeders, eens mans zonen, in het land Kanaan; en zie, de kleinste is heden bij onzen vader; doch de een is niet meer. 14Toen zeide Jozef tot hen: Dat is het, wat ik tot u gesproken heb, zeggende: Gij zijt verspieders! 15Hierin zult gij beproefd worden: zo waarlijk als Farao leeft! indien gij van hier zult uitgaan, tenzij dan, wanneer uw kleinste broeder herwaarts zal gekomen zijn! 16Zendt een uit u, die uw broeder hale; maar weest gijlieden gevangen, en uw woorden zullen beproefd worden, of de waarheid bij u zij; en indien niet, zo waarlijk als Farao leeft, zo zijt gij verspieders! 17En hij zette hen samen drie dagen in bewaring. 18En ten derden dage zeide Jozef tot hen: Doet dit, zo zult gij leven; ik vrees God. 19Zo gij vroom zijt, zo zij een uwer broederen gebonden in het huis uwer bewaring; en gaat gij heen, brengt het koren voor den honger uwer huizen. 20En brengt uw kleinsten broeder tot mij, zo zullen uw woorden waargemaakt worden; en gij zult niet sterven. En zij deden alzo. 21Toen zeiden zij de een tot den ander: Voorwaar, wij zijn schuldig aan onzen broeder, wiens benauwdheid der ziele wij zagen, toen hij ons om genade bad; maar wij hoorden niet! daarom komt deze benauwdheid over ons. 22En Ruben antwoordde hun, zeggende: Heb ik het tot u niet gezegd, toen ik zeide: Zondigt niet aan dezen jongeling! maar gij hoordet niet; en ook zijn bloed, ziet, het wordt gezocht! 23En zij wisten niet, dat het Jozef hoorde; want daar was een taalman tussen hen. 24Toen wendde hij zich om, van hen af, en weende; daarna keerde hij weder tot hen, en sprak tot hen, en nam Simeon van hen, en bond hem voor hun ogen. 25En Jozef gebood, dat men hun zakken met koren vullen zou, en dat men hun geld wederkeerde, een iegelijk in zijn zak, en dat men hun teerkost gave tot den weg; en men deed hun alzo. 26En zij laadden hun koren op hun ezels, en togen van daar. 27Toen een zijn zak opendeed, om zijn ezel voeder te geven in de herberg, zo zag hij zijn geld; want ziet, het was in den mond van zijn zak. 28En hij zeide tot zijn broederen: Mijn geld is wedergekeerd; daartoe ook, ziet, het is in mijn zak! Toen ontging hun het hart, en zij verschrikten, de een tot den ander zeggende: Wat is dit, dat ons God gedaan heeft? 29En zij kwamen in het land Kanaan, tot Jakob, hun vader; en zij gaven hem te kennen al hun wedervaren, zeggende: 30Die man, de heer van dat land, heeft hard met ons gesproken; en hij heeft ons gehouden voor verspieders des lands. 31Maar wij zeiden tot hem: Wij zijn vroom; wij zijn geen verspieders. 32Wij waren twaalf gebroeders, zonen van onzen vader; de een is niet meer, en de kleinste is heden bij onzen vader in het land Kanaan. 33En die man, de heer van dat land, zeide tot ons: Hieraan zal ik bekennen, dat gijlieden vroom zijt; laat een uwer broederen bij mij, en neemt voor den honger uwer huizen, en trekt heen. 34En brengt uw kleinsten broeder tot mij; zo zal ik weten, dat gij geen verspieders zijt, maar dat gij vroom zijt; uw broeder zal ik u wedergeven, en gij zult in dit land handelen. 35En het geschiedde, als zij hun zakken ledigden, ziet, zo had een iegelijk den bundel zijns gelds in zijn zak; en zij zagen de bundelen huns gelds, zij en hun vader, en zij waren bevreesd. 36Toen zeide Jakob, hun vader, tot hen: Gij berooft mij van kinderen! Jozef is er niet, en Simeon is er niet; nu zult gij Benjamin wegnemen! al deze dingen zijn tegen mij! 37Toen sprak Ruben tot zijn vader, zeggende: Dood twee mijner zonen, zo ik hem tot u niet wederbreng; geef hem in mijn hand, en ik zal hem weder tot u brengen! 38Maar hij zeide: Mijn zoon zal met ulieden niet aftrekken; want zijn broeder is dood, en hij is alleen overgebleven; zo hem een verderf ontmoette op den weg, dien gij zult gaan, zo zoudt gij mijn grauwe haren met droefenis ten grave doen nederdalen.
